Matsumoku Rocks
Приєднався 28 вер 2021
Hi folks, here you'll find some honest no-nonsense videos of our old Japanese guitars, some others too. Matsumoku Guitar and Bass Ltd has an ever growing collection of nice old obscurities which decorate the place, and inspire us on our journey. Please don't expect fretboard acrobatics - this isn't about me, or any other players that happen to appear here - it's about the guitars. This is the antidote for big and slightly bland new guitar stores with walls of mainstream offerings. I would expect you all have one or more modern mainstream guitars anyway - they're probably excellent. No, this is about expanding your armoury - seeing what a particular guitar can do for you, your sound or how it can add to your soul. No-one wakes up one morning and decides to amass a collection like this. It is a natural progression of curiosity. Come and play them - book in on the website. Some are for sale, some are perfect donors for DreamBuild projects, some will stay here forever.
GRECO SE-450 1977 DEMO
Entry level heaven here - the early 450 models were grown up guitars, just a tiny bit thinner at the body. Our very best guitarist here thinks this is one is the one he wants to gig with. Enough said I reckon...

GRECO SE-500W DEMO
Переглядів 36521 годину тому
Sometimes, just a white Strat with a rosewood neck will do. This 1978 Greco will not disappoint - forgive the little scars, unblemished 47 year old guitars haven't been played enough! This is one of those SE-500s that punch well above their weight - great bitey airy sounds and properly comfortable neck. This will happily hold its own next to a Fender 1978, and I bet you could have at least 3 of...
GRECO SE-800N D781830 DEMO

The 800s are hard to find, but when we see one we tend to get it here. This featherweight example packs a proper punch; a delicious one-piece body, the top spec hardware, and pick-ups perfectly matched to the instrument. Surely the sweet-spot for value for money for vintage guitars. #matsumokurocks #greco #fujigen #vintageguitar #ketteringhamhall
1974 GRECO TE-600 DEMO

Right at the top of the range in 1974 - this was a real cheeky copy of an early 70s Fender - Fujigen got the neck just about perfect. This one has just arrived with us and had a gentle recommissioning - we left the Seymour Duncan Vintage Rails in place - it works very well in this guitar. A good honest Tele needs little written about it, so just have a listen to see if it tempts you. Definitely...
2012 GRECO SST 88 DEMO
Переглядів 8214 днів тому
A slightly more modern guitar this time - still MIJ, and one of the premium models that are held in typically high regard. Very rare outside Japan, this SST-88 suits its Alnico Screamin's perfectly - play with the controls and this is nicely versatile. Light as a feather, but still mahogany, and with a timeless 'black wood finish', this will make a fantastic addition to any arsenal. Featured: 2...
1978 WESTMINSTER COMPETITION COLOURS DEMO
Переглядів 29914 днів тому
What a little gem this is - a proper grown up Mustang copy from Matsumoku - real wood, real neck, Maxons batting well out of their league, and that timeless look - fading gracefully from the original white to the acceptable cream. The real ones are reaching silly values now, so if you can live with the lack of headstock credibility, this one totally makes sense. #matsumokurocks #fendermustang #...
1980s MAISON JR DEMO
Переглядів 10714 днів тому
This is one of the Korean Maison (the little ® signifies a Korean build) Juniors that were made in tiny numbers in the 1980s, and exported in even tinier numbers, and so this is a rare bird indeed. A bolt-on may put a lot of you off, but this isn't supposed to be a Gibson, it is decent well built (and amply adjustable) guitar that sounds and plays really well, and can be left in a stand at a gi...
Quick first look at a 1969 Tokai Hummingbird
Переглядів 15321 день тому
Arrived in a bit of a state, but we have stripped and rebuilt it, now fully functional and basically brilliant. If you need a Flying Banana, a multi-coloured Guyatone, we'll do our best to find one, fix it up and supply it. The HS Anderson ARS may be a challenge too far (and the first one I find will be mine!), but give us a try. #matsumokurocks #hummingbird #tokai #vintageguitar #rareguitar #f...
MATSUMOKU DB-500W PAISLEY DEMO
Переглядів 59121 день тому
1973 Greco Strats survive in reassuringly high numbers - they were built to last, and a few folk out there preferred them to the more faithfully accurate Fender copies that evolved during the decade. Matsumoku always stuck to their own ideas of what a great Strat should be like. This one will live on in abject luxurious style - new Clausen tapped A5 pick-up set that we wind for these models, th...
1980 GRECO SE-450
Переглядів 22521 день тому
Seen the prices of Fujigen build Squier CSTs nowadays? That is the headstock tax in action, and there's nothing wrong with wanting one of those. But this is far more obtainable alternative with an awful lot in common with that Squier - aspects like same production line for example. One major difference is that the Fender bean-counters had not arrived to take out the costs when this Greco was bu...
1973 GRECO JB 450 DEMO

Excellent value for money here - a really solid old-school Jazz Bass, full of the vintage instrument character and ready for another 50 years. Reminding us all that Maxon really knew how to wind a pick-up. This old warrior is ready for the road, it if you are seeing it on Reverb, by all means consider buying direct from us - we can all save the fees. For sale here: www.matsumoku.rocks/treasurec...

After a few upgrade projects for Gretsches, we found ourselves with a spare TV Jones PowerPlus (Mr B Gibbons likes these) so we put it in this lovely old 90s Maison Junior - Korean, but we'll forgive it that. I have given you a coil split, a parallel humbucker and normal humbucker configuration to get some real versatility from this. From punk to country, from rockabilly to death metal, this wi...
1978 GRECO SE-600N DEMO
Переглядів 16528 днів тому
Sorry sorry sorry - totally indulgent demo here. If it conveys how much I adore this SE-600, then it has done its job. You know when some guitars just click with you? The Excel pick-ups shine their brightest and best here. If a 70's type of Strat is what you need, and you don't fancy the price tag (or the risk!) of a Fender of this vintage, this Greco may just be what you need. Glorious. Will h...
1974 GRECO EG-480 DEMO

Best of the early bolt-ons - a hell of a lot more character than the later 500s, this 480 is a fresh arrival here at the Hall, and it will be offered for sale in a few days time. The creamiest Les Paul we've had and that includes the real ones! The best thing about these are that they are obtainable - none of the silly prices of the later ones. What a thing this is. 1978 MOOG TAURUS 1
Переглядів 20328 днів тому
I know Moog makes its money on a PC screen now, and these big old heavy things are museum pieces, but as usual, there is something special about physically using an instrument despite it being easier to do on an Ipad. Old-school it may be, a nightmare to lug about it may be, the stage prancing lead singer goes arse over tit over it occasionally, but pressing these pedals and feeling those vibra...

Bonjour, connaissez-vous la largeur du sillet de tête ? Merci
41.2mm Sir
Merci Donc moins large qu'une fender strat d'aujourd'hui ?
Wow. Sounds amazing. I have one as well. Can you tell me more about the stock pickups?
PU-100 pick-ups were the evolution of the pre-serial number range from 74/75 and are less tall than the original Maxon singles, but still don't fit in a Fender plate. While the PU-100 pick-ups in lesser models vary in DCR, all of our SE-800s have been identical - the premium models had a different quality control standard I guess. We have seen PU-119 in SE-800s but these PU-100s have a brightness and punch that suits the 800 perfectly. Later Project Series 800s had PU-119 - what year is yours?
What is the neck style called on that guitar? I have a bolt on neck vantage that uses the same neck joint design but it is bolted on instead of glued and I'm in need of a replacement
fujigen?
Yes.
What song was that bass line from?
I’m afraid that is a figment of my imagination. Just winging it…
think Ur underestimating Ur bass skills sounds pretty good to me
Too kind!!!
Beautiful!
It has excellent sustain and resonnance..
thats a cool one
What a guitar 😊
Can you buy that pickguard separately? I'm trying to see how it looks up close
What model exactly would you require it for?
@MatsumokuGuitars Mexican fender strat, I'm sure the pickguard might fit I hope the specs are close to a Mexican MIM fender strat

The Grecos are subtly different around neck pocket and the screw holes won’t line up. If you contact me on the website I can get you a cost/lead time. Pre-warning though, they are not cheap!!! If that doesn’t matter, we can sort you out with one.
@@MatsumokuGuitars What is so special about the Sozo POI Capacitor? The pickups have 2 tap outputs #1 TAP lower output mode #2 TAP higher output mode?
that is utterly fabulous
I think I want one of my own!
Sounds great, nice playing.
Your right hand technique - tell me more! It's beyond slap; I love it!
It’s called ‘total amateur’ that’s what it’s called!!!
Sounds amazing! Is it running through any FX? Sounds like there’s some stereo width to it.
The first couple of clips have the Loudex Mini reverb and a bit of its chorus on it - the Rising Sun and test clips are straight into Focusrite to studio speakers. It is an incredible unit!
fantastic sounding "strat"
Banzai!!!!
sound abit compressed but awesome still . love the old guitars, they are awesome
Thanks I have two of those, one very early with a set neck and a late 60s , 67? Bolt on neck both guitars are really good fun. I think they are underestimated in my opinion. Thanks very much for explaining the configurations that’s really useful, it all makes sense.
Sounding good!
Oof! Good job I've only just seen this on 1 Jan 2025.
Is this equal to an aria, burny, tokai or one of those similar, or more on the cheaper end in feel, weight and tone? There’s one for sale atm
Take care with the Brighton brand as the vast majority of them are generic Chinese builds. We know the history of this one - a Moridaira build. It came with no pick-ups or hardware at all so we gave this one a thorough rebuild with nice Gotoh hardware and Clausen pick-ups. A bolt on chambered Brighton may well be a Japanese product - solid set necks will be Chinese and more modern.
You're doing a fantastic job! I need some advice: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
I covered that in a previous video - you need a Cor Anglais for that and put some more reverb on the Triangle solo.
Which way are you playing we are the people. I would love to learn it that way, thanks
Standard Em to Bm, then C back to Em but up the neck. I am technically incompetent at explaining this sort of stuff so l will explain it by another YT video (maybe later today).
@@MatsumokuGuitarsthank would be great thank you so much
ua-cam.com/video/drD4SoDfLeY/v-deo.html As promised.
@@MatsumokuGuitarsthank you so much I really appreciate it!
Good sounding Koch amp! Hope to see 3 pickup Gretsch guitars more often. Preferably as part of the player professional or vintage select series within a 3100 - 3900 price range.
If the water gets that high in your living room you should put the guitar and amp up.
Everything made in 1978 (like me) is better !
I have a candy apple red maple neck Matsumoko that is branded Dagostino. I believe it was produced in 1974. Yours is nicer.
Peak of the lawsuit guitar era !
78 and 79 do seem the best the ultimate years - definitely for Strat clones. Fender guys get really annoyed with these ones!!
Fantastic video , Matsumoko are amazing.
they made a pink and grey one for Setzer
Just wow…
Dynasonics, not Duosonics.
overwhelmed by the Penguin!! Of course, Dyna not Duo - the written adverts for this are correct - forgive my slip of the tongue...
@@MatsumokuGuitars Haha! All is forgiven! 😆
Ooooh! Some truly lovely tones there Sir. Beautiful guitar!
Thank you!
Beautiful tone and playing… bravo ! Thanks for sharing
Way too kind! Thanks. I don't mind going nuts on the old Strats we have here but I do need to be gentle with these beauties!!!
That Westone sounds beautiful ❤️.
It does indeed - the Haeussel A5 Klinge pick-up helps, and an older Matsumoku PU-100 now sits in the neck. That bridge pick-up cost more than the guitar!
@MatsumokuGuitars Wow!!! It was definitely a great addition!!! I have two Matsumoku's , a '79-'80 Aria Pro ll Les Paul Custom in Cherry Sunburst, and a late 60's Aria AC-8 concert classical..... They are both amazing guitars.💜🎸
What a badass little jam! Nicely done!
so I have a Tremar Viking Deluxe, a Super Viking, an Ultra Swede and a 2nd Gen Swede. Now you're telling me there's a semi-hollow Swede? here we go shopping again..
I have same….78.
We have a few here now - the sweet spot of the range is think.
your guitar seems to have all 3 colors....I don't have yellow on mine,
@@yannguitare7412 That yellow is in fact a delicious shade of ash with a gracefully smoked on discoloured lacquer. Just red and black we think. I miss that thing - it's now in France.
Sounds incredible! 😎👌 Where do you get these pickguards? 😍👌
I love Strats! There are a lot of really cool guitars from that lawsuit era! I’d like to find one myself!
Plenty here! Www.matsumoku.rocks.
SUPER COOL !!!
sounds terrific
Great guitar!!! Does anyone know what are the pick ups in these? I'm eyeing a TS-800 on the web and I would like to know how it sounds?
@@andreaspapandreou871 an 800 should have DiMarzios (Super Distortions), and the 400, 500 and 600 had Maxon Extra III pick-ups which were very similar units. The same pick-ups are also known as Protomatic III and MMK45. Great units that split to good singles or work in parallel brilliantly.
I like how the pickup behind the bridge is the complete antithesis of the 90s hair scrunchies ,velcro straps and rubber bands i keep seeing on jazz and fusion players necks above the nut
why aren't all serious guitars well sculpted smooth comfortable 70s style neck-throughs anymore ?? It just feels/looks more like a real instrument . Picking up a strat ( even an expensive custom) with its bolts and screws and plastic everywhere just feels like a disposable toy in comparison
Brilliant, I love that guitar :-D
Hi. What do you think about the later GRECO models? I have a chance to buy ..Super Power SE-500 1980- 1990? Great guitar collection. Thanks
SE-500 became Spacey Sound after 79, any 1980 -82 'Super Power' models (we are talking Strats here, not Les Pauls) will be entry level SE-380 models. Still fine, but lower spec pick-ups, tuners and woods. After 82, these have the word Fender or Squier on the headstock. Matsumoku produced the Strikin' Sound ST-500 up until 1980. After that is was pointy headstocks and locking trems! Best years for contemporary Fender comparable feel and dimensions are 76-79. Pre 76 are totally different, and have a soul of their own despite the basic shape. Try one and you'll see what I mean. Best ever, if you can stretch to one, is an SE or ST-700. Even many Fender purists agree.
I was Geoff's taxi driver for the last years of his life...an absolute gentleman.
I had the chance to speak to him just before the end. I concur - an absolute gentleman.
Oh my , having had the pleasure , nay , privilege of playing this amazing instrument , its the desert Island guitar for me , it oozes inspiration , the inbuilt univibe is musical and addictive , perfect full neck , plays / sounds like a dream , you will lose hours ( well spent ) playing this guitar , whoever buys it will be a very very happy teddy
