You are so right! I go for classic styles. Good material. Always hang dry my tops. I have another suggestion for keeping your clothing in great condition. Wear an apron when you cook. It’s amazing how quickly a little splattered oil or pasta sauce can ruin your clothes.
If you get a really bad stain, spray with stain remover, dabble on a little Dawn dishwashing soap and let sit for 5 minutes. Add color-safe bleach and a little less laundry detergent to your washing machine. Soak garment for 20 minutes. Wash. Check to see if stain is gone before drying.

I've noticed a new thing of adding 'recycled polyester' to fabrics. I know it's trendy, but when added to lower quality wool it makes a horrid stiff fabric. The biggest problem with clothing now is the lack of quality fabric. I sew and finding decent fabric is so hard! I don't always want to wear my classic tweed suits but shopping is just a nightmare.
I just want to say thank you, and living here in the U.S. it seems younger women have decided that it is acceptable to leave their houses in what look like pajama pants and loose sweatshirts! Frumpy would be an improvement! I always make a point of complimenting a well-dressed and put together woman when I encounter one. Women don't tend to support each other much that way (at least not in public, to a stranger) but it always brings a smile to the lady's face and maybe makes her day a little brighter, and she will spread that joy with her wherever she goes. Some of the women I see now, half my age, are out in public wearing clothes that I wouldn't go to my mailbox in! Thank you for all of your gracious sharing of your fashion knowledge!
Going to work at age 66 for me now (I work in a community college) in the Pacific Northwest means jeans or pants of some sort, a cashmere sweater in the cool months, and a men's slightly oversized wool jacket. I play around with cashmere or silk scarves in various neutral colors, various colors and types of boots or loafers, a few basic belts, a pair of Adidas Sambas, and I have a whole wardrobe of interesting prescription glasses that I mix & match with my outfits. I'm having so much fun! I get compliments all the time from students and staff. With few exceptions, everything I own is a natural fiber: no polyester or acrylic. Natural just feels better.
I’m all for natural fabrics but just to let you Know that wool and even cashmere does peel and form those tiny “bubbles“ too. The trick is to take care of your clothes and use a debubbler when needed.
Frederique, I SO agree with you on fabric content. But I have been noticing that retailers who sell even the more expensive clothes, are being very vague about listing the actual fabric content! Usually because polyester is in there somewhere!! 😡 Love your new format. 👍🙋♀️🥰🇺🇸‼️

You can get dyes that are specifically meant for use in washing machines. I don’t know where you are so I don’t know which brands are available there, but here in the UK, I use Dylon dyes and I find they work well. If you have an automatic machine with a wash and three rinses as a standard programme, that is plenty of rinsing, so no colour lingering. I am not sure about the more modern “eco-friendly” machines that use less water, though, you might have to do some extra rinses. I have never had a problem with dye lingering into the next wash, but I make the next wash one of dark colours, just in case.
Pretty sure the RIT DYE package/bottle has washing machine method included on it- if not,check YT. My tip is to choose the longest wash possible and when done wipe down area under door before running an empty load with bleach and detergent.
Another thing to remember is that even classic styles have an “expiry date”. I had a plain black suit that I wore to every sort of occasion, just dressed up or down with different accessories. Recently, I had to go to a funeral and I got out my trusty black suit. Fortunately, I tried it on beforehand, and honestly, it looked really frumpy. The skirt was long, the shoulders of the jacket were wide and I looked like an extra from one of those 1980s shows like Dallas or Dynasty! I also thought that the black no longer suited my colouring - I have got paler as I have got older. I now have a new, dark(ish) grey suit, still a classic style, but more modern and I feel it looks better on me.
Agreed. I noticed this in my wardrobe and am evaluating which classics to replace with an updated cut or new color. I was surprised looking at recent photos that black isn’t my best neutral.
My beloved black Liz Claiborne pantsuit with black grosgrain trim and gold-toned buttons was a mainstay of my wardrobe (I'm very petite so I stick with classics, since I am apparently a 'specialty' size and pay extra for it) finally expired; the elastic in the trouser waist rotted lol so I cut those buttons off of it and said 'adieu!' but I sure miss that suit....
In the uk unfortunately its more U.S.A. with buttocks bursting out of too tight trousers,a low top with too much bust showing. It just looks nasty. Too tight clothes altogether never looks nice.

Oh yes - the never ending To Do List. When I feel overwhelmed I stop and ask myself what I actually NEED to do today. The answer is always eat. drink water and sleep. Maybe one urgent/deadline thing. Everything else can wait. I'm sure our hunter gatherer ancestors didn't have lists. Neither did our ancestors just a few hundred years ago, as most ordinary people couldn't read and write. I often imagine if I was elderly and suffering with memory loss a lot of stuff would just get forgotten or I would just let it drop as I wouldn't be able to cope with it and would just focus on the important stuff.

What is the minimum % to seek for actually being warm, etc
I try to find natural fabrics as much as possible but it’s so difficult! I live in Canada where unfortunately there is still so much fast polyester out there! I don’t mind paying for it but it’s just hard to find! :(
I'm in the US. I buy a mix of new and used/vintage clothing and it's a lot more common to find natural fibers in the used/vintage market, because it was so much more common for manufacturers to use those materials in the past. I try to go second hand for my wardrobe for the most part, but sometimes I really like something new, and it is more costly in natural fibers. In the end it is cheaper for things to last longer.
These days I always check fabric content, and go for the most natural I can find and afford. T-shirts ... I find the ones Uniqlo sells wash well and fit well, and actually last me several years. Good value for money even though it's fast fashion with all the bad connotations that go with that.

I was colour coded many years ago and I'm a summer, so I always wear colours from my palette. And like you always say, you have to know your own style. I'm 63 so I'm not going to dress like a teenager, but I do like to be "with it". And I do have my own style - I don't necessarily always want to look like everyone else! Big yes on checking fabric content!! 100% natural fiber is way better even though it may lack stretch or shaping ability. I don’t mind having some man made material in my wool or cotton socks though.
Pilling of knitwear. I worked in a clothes shop that sold natural wool and cashmere knitwear. It tends to pill where the body is rubbing against itself - under the arm pits, down the side of the body and if you sit at a desk or wear a cross body bag, you will get pilling on the front and at the waist. When a customer really moaned, I always asked them have they ever seen a sheep. Their wool is never beautifully soft, combed and fluffy. It is always matted and tangled. That makes them stop and think. An inexpensive pilling/debobbling comb will do the job of getting rid of bobbles.
My biggest mistakes have been buying polyester - I sweat so much in it I never feel good. No matter how nice it looks if it has polyester I never buy it.
Yes yes with the zipper in plastic. They are flimsy, and stick in spots even before you wear, and sometimes more than others they have quite a job to do. I worry they will not cope. It is about $50 to replace the zip. I am not too good with the sewing machine, somehow I never get it right. The metal zips seem stronger.
Now that I’m retired, I’m trying to create wardrobe that suits me. I have always been a classic dresser and I guess I always will be. I can’t order online though. I’m always returning things. I need to touch the material and try it on. Also, how do you feel about wearing men’s casual t shirts or . They just fit me better.

As to men's t-shirts, a definite yes and shall add even the sweaters/jumpers are often of better quality for the exact same price tag.

I don’t like or suit tops that are too short either to tuck in or to leave out, and I really, really don’t like sleeves that finish at the bicep, the widest part of my arm. Men’s t-shirts come to my hips, the sleeves come to just above the bend of my elbow and I feel comfortable in them.
My pet peeve is when online stores don't let you filter by fabric. It's surprising how many stores don't have that option. I detest polyester and acrylic and will never buy a piece that consists mainly either of those. For certain purposes I'm ok with 20-30 % polyester, rest cotton/viscose but a 100 % polyester shirt or dress is insufferable. In a way that makes shopping "easy" when you can often discard some 80 % of the garments based on material alone 😆 One more obvious tip to keep your clothes looking fresh: always separate dark, light and intense colors when washing. That color transfer that will happen if you mix light, dark and bright fabrics really makes your clothes look worn out. I also always wash my "everyday" clothes on the delicate cycle at 40 C, I find that 30 C does not get them properly cleaned.

I don’t buy anything with polyester. I live in the desert in California where it’s always really hot like right now October 1. It’s 95°. I’m not sure when we’ll see cooler weather maybe at the end of the month or in November. I’m still in the pool every day.😊
I got a cute rayon swimsuit coverup in button up top and shorts .. it shrank in the first wash and dry and they get so wrinkly ! I feel embarrassed to wear it outside around town but they make great pjs 😣

I actually have clothes I wear only in the home. This way, if stains appear, I am ok with it. In other words, street clothes and home clothes.

For certain purposes I'm ok with 20-30 % polyester, rest cotton/viscose but a 100 % polyester shirt or dress is insufferable. In a way that makes shopping "easy" when you can often discard some 80 % of the garments based on material alone 😆
One more obvious tip to keep your clothes looking fresh: always separate dark, light and intense colors when washing. That color transfer that will happen if you mix light, dark and bright fabrics really makes your clothes look worn out. I also always wash my "everyday" clothes on the delicate cycle at 40 C, I find that 30 C does not get them properly cleaned.

I don’t buy anything with polyester. I live in the desert in California where it’s always really hot like right now October 1. It’s 95°. I’m not sure when we’ll see cooler weather maybe at the end of the month or in November. I’m still in the pool every day.😊

I cotton to cotton because it is so breathable. Non natural fabrics make me sweat and breakout.
Linen always wrinkles on me, so I avoid buying anything linen.

I got a cute rayon swimsuit coverup in button up top and shorts .. it shrank in the first wash and dry and they get so wrinkly ! I feel embarrassed to wear it outside around town but they make great pjs 😣

My skin is very pale but looks way better in white than cream. Pale pink looks good too. I thought I was warm undertone but maybe not ?
