- α9 is capable of recording high-resolution full-frame 4K movies with wide dynamic range. Full pixel readout with no pixel binning makes it possible to condense approximately 2.4 times* the amount of data required for 4K (the equivalent of the amount of data required for 6K) into 3840 x 2160 4K output. This oversampling process plus fullframe pixel readout without binning results in the highest possible 4K movie image quality.
* 24p recording. Approx. 1.6 times for 30p recording.

Truly a technical marvel of a camera!
HOWEVER, no SLog and no weather sealing means no buy for my use. It would be a good landscape & (maybe) wildlife camera yet no pro weather sealing means I can't leave my A9 out in the same conditions as a 1dx. No log and small bit rate means for my particular video uses.
Still a VERY impressive camera which has unfortunately, been held back by the marketing department. Still wouldn't mind one though!
Imagine a Full frame Iphone sensor with 35mm Detachable Lens, What a great concept. A new breed, a crossover, a game changer. FYI in Sony Experia, this Exmor RS Sensor capable of producing 960 FPS Super Slow Mo Video. Imagine what the next A9s can do.
Beautiful footage. Imagine that A9 chip on the new Sony Venice Digital Cinema system at 60 I-frames/ps, XAVC , 4:2:2 and with a Cooke, or Zeiss CP Prime lens!

The SONY A9 is an import camera-- not just for SONY though. It's introduction has helped to highlight the benefits of EVF/mirrorless, and its superiority in many ways over mechanical/analog systems, while increased the technology's importance among manufacturers. Pure digital, and the associated elimination of virtually all mechanical camera components, was inevitable; it just required fast enough silicon and design/development of more optimal focus and image handling subsystems, as SONY has done.
It would be great if Canon glass worked better via adapters (i.e. focused closer to native SONY lens speed and accuracy), but hopefully that will come soon.
One thing though, whoever did the post on that video did not correct properly for spherical and related aberration, making the distortion quite distracting-- especially given the otherwise very high acquisition quality, sharpness and tonal balance, and the beautiful cinematography.

Umm.. You just listed 3 reasons... lol. Even if it is SLog 2, you're better off.
Even the A6300 has all of that, honestly you should just buy an adapter and make the leap. You'll need a good rig to process XAVC-S though.
What? XAVC-S is light weight by comparison so some other codecs. I have a 2013 MPB and can edit 4k XAVCS files. Not the smoothest experience, but it works well enough to edit.
Now try editing ProRes 444 or DNxHD and tell me how much better they are to work with ;) XAVC-S is efficient in size, but it isn't unpacked, thus editing it is a lot harder. But you're right, I find it pretty easy to edit even on a GTX 660 lol
My original post was a little unclear. I'm wondering how this camera will perform in low light. The promo vid is shot at ISO 100-400, easy peasy to get a clean image. Also, will it shoot SLog3? Assuming it will based on other Sony products. And external recorder, does it have clean HDMI out, and if so, what flavor? Granted this camera is geared toward the sports shooter crowd, not video centric like the A7S, but wondering how this will stack up to Canon video products like 5D series or C100.

the 1 thing i don't get about 4k is that sometimes the footage at the rim of objects or subjects looks like its moving
All the GH5 fanboys.... This is a sensor double the size of that you get in a mft body. More detail, better low light. And lets not even get into the AF... which was used in some of this video, because yes "pros" use AF. Either way the GH5 has it's merits of course, but don't compare apples to oranges.
I always laugh at those manual pros who just use manual in whatever circumstances. AF is developed for better assisting photographers to record what they see and express what they think, not to somehow "kill" their pro-ness.
you are also comparing 7 thousand dollars for a camera body and basic 24-70 2.8 lens to $2500 for the gh5 with a body and 24-70 2.8 equivilent. So i think 2 GH5s with 2 pro lenses and money in your pocket might be the better decision. (im not a panasonic fanboy either)

PeglegMedia (great name btw) Hey that's debatable which is what makes this a fun conversation. That 24-70 is anything but "basic" it's unquestionably pro-grade glass. It's damn sharp as was demonstrated in this video and various other reviews. It's not a straight up 1:1 comparison, as you're totally leaving out the ground breaking stills capabilities of this camera. Like the GH5, it's for a particular customer, though I'd agree the GH5 has broader appeal.

I've used BOTH Sony and Canon Cameras and Lenses and BOTH are excellent!
Sony I've used since the old-timer Betacam SP Video Camera
with $35,000 Fujinon Servo lens days....Lately it's been all Canon
Cameras (1DC/C100/C300/C500) with Canon and Fujinon Glass
....BUT....this is starting to get interesting because it looks like
Sony has FINALLY FIXED thee Magenta discolouration on the
still image/video output for almost ALL of its current sensors!
THIS IS A CAMERA I WOULD SERIOUSLY THINK OF BUYING !!!
Yes I could go get an Sony F65 CineAlta setup or Red Weapon 8K setup
for $120,000 US+, .....BUT.... for less than $10,000 US worth of

with CLOG-1/2/3 AND H.265 recording at 4:2:2
12 bits per colour channel! THEN they can retain
their current customers for video and if they offer
JPEG-2000 Wavelet Stills at 4:4:4 16 bits per channel
then they would JUST OPEN THEIR MARKET WAAAY WIDE!!!!

remember a few years ago when people only bought cameras because they had 24p as a second option to 30p? Nobody cared about 60fps until the gh5 said they would have it.
DJI Phantom 4 Pro does 4K 60 fps, and sony a9 doesn't, looks like a joke.

Yep, if only magic lantern could crack this and the A7s, oh yeah. This is the reason I will be adding an outdated 5DMkiii to my A7s, and not another A9 or 7 to my collection.
Only Sony's Xperia Premium series can display in full 4k that isn't mine. What a shame.

Vagik Karibyan As i know, make a raw video profile as flat as possible to capture dynamic range as large as possible. Then use color grading in Premiere Pro. Don't need extra works.

It looks like the small body (heat issues) is keeping the video specs down compared to the 4K 60p GH5 (180 fps in 1080p) that costs less than 1/2 the price.
Umm... How about it has double the sensor size, so it requires more processing than a GH5. You'll get better low light performance and a sharper image as a result. The GH5 is still awesome, don't get me wrong. But these are 2 different animals.
if you film professionally you dont need to worry about low light because you will have lights. and a f4 zoom on sony would be the same price as an f1.2 zoom for panasonic...
With the GH5, Panasonic said they wouldn't have released the GH5 if it had overheating issues and the only time you may have issues is when shooting continuous 6K photo. Yes the Sony has more processing than the GH5, but the thinness of the Sony mirrorless bodies makes the overheating more of an issue as there is less space for a good heat sink but that doesn't necesarily mean the A9 will or won't have have the same overheating issues, but a bigger fatter body would allow for a better heat sink for less overheating issues. At least Canon are doing something about it with the 5D MKIV: spsphoto.org/blog/canon-5d-mark-iv-firmware-update-to-reduce-4k-crop-from-1-74x-to-1-27x/
If you look at the specs and all the literature, they are really aiming this at photographers, specifically ones using a 1D-X. That doesn't mean they won't include 4k since it's a checkbox requirement, but the main push seems to be 20fps with a 300+ shot buffer in raw. Plus better battery life.
Yeah it looks like something built for sports photography. I'm super impressed but I wouldn't buy this one cause I would be paying for technologies I don't need.

You can't find any device that could easily play that thing, huge bitrates = new kind of storage type needed, I bet you can't even play that on Intel i7 cpu series without GPU hardware acceleration !

This camera is not actually 4K and it cannot be used for professional results. It uses 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, which means the color has a lower resolution of 1080p. You get a black and white image in 4K with a color image in 1080p, overlaid on top of eachother.
4K at only 30fps??? ...even a small GoPro or Yi can shoot 4K at 60fps.

If you're talking about the scene in the cave where the cave walls look as if they have moire, thats actually caused by your monitor not being able to handle the resolution. If you have a 4k screen and enable full screen, it goes away. Not entirely sure why this happens on monitors, but.. yah. Having to much resolution is a good problem to have

Thats nonsense, where is the proof? We use A7SII plus the FS7 daily and the 10bit from the FS7 is way superior, 8bit breaks up in color grading or any heavy post-production. You get banding in gradient tones, the 8bit from A7SII is great but would be much better at 10bit obviously
