Hey guys - I edited this video. I’m sorry I used the incorrect Hidden Palace Zone - I played through the game in Story mode and missed the zone (which I’m guessing you have to do something special to find, as running through normal didn’t get me there). I didn’t have time to go back and capture it - so I made the wrong decision to put the other one. I should have put generic Sonic 2 footage, and I goofed, im sorry. And yes - I put the cut Sonic 3 tracks on purpose. OG Launch Base Zone & IceCap Zone rock and it felt like honoring those tracks.
Hidden Palace in Sonic 2 is found by going to a certain area. In the original game, Mystic Cave had a large pit that was filled with spikes instead of being a normal pit, and it became infamous for people getting stuck in it as Super Sonic. The remaster turns that spike pit into the entrance to Hidden Palace

They're in the video as background music for some reason but don't appear in this collection. They were allegedly composed by Michael Jackson and some of his musicians so there's trouble with copyrights
The entire video is filled with errors. I don’t think they’ve actually ever played a sonic game before. See the part where they get confused about which Hidden Palace stage has been recreated. They show footage of Sonic 3. Embarrassing
1:39 - Couldn't be more wrong. Knuckles' gliding & wall climbing are very well suited to CD's level design and it's exploration-focused game structure.
I agree, but at the same time, I think he could make the game easier, but, so does Tails IMO. Probably, SEGA just didn't want to "waste" time adding Knuckles.
Ive played the Sonic CD restored mod for the steam version that adds knuckles, and it perfectly fits him and there is no excuse for him not being playable
Carnival Night, Ice Cap, and Launch Base music has all been swapped out for new songs. Kinda misleading to use those songs as background music for this video review when they’re not in the game.
Great review. And really well said, that no matter what happens to the Sonic franchise (and we know exactly what this means), we'll have the awesome classics to fall back on. Plus there's tons of great mods like Sonic 3 Complete, because I really prefer the original Sonic 3 music... Real sad there's no new artworks to unlock, just things we've already seen. Poor Cybershell will be disappointed.

Sega really should be going all out with this collection, seeing how many times they've sold them in a collection... Sonic Jam (Saturn) has 3D world exploration, Sega commercials, and box scans. Sonic Mega Collection (PS2/GC/Xbox) has the really high quality box art scans, comic book scans, original Sonic 3 music. Sonic Gems (PS2/GC/Xbox) Collection has bonus unlockable Sonic games , such as Sonic R, Sonic the Fighter, and six Game Gear games, which really should have been here.. Where else are they going to release them? Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection (PS3/360), includes: 50 games (including Sonic 1-3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball, Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine), and many others. Videos of developer interviews. Sega Genesis Collection (PS4/XBO/Switch), has a ton of audio/video options, CRT filters, tube curvature, save states, a 3D 80s bedroom UI, rewind/fast forward, and even a VR option, and more. Imagine if Sonic Origins combined many of those features.
Tails getting stuck and trying to spin dash his way out of trouble and eventually just flying back to you is not at ALL a new issue. It’s been there from the original, which is why for many years Tails’s Poor AI in the original game was the subject of many jokes. Maybe play the original version next time?
They fixed the Sonic 1's Spike Bug, they could have gotten the Mania Devs to fix that too, c'mon, there's no excuse to keep a almost 30 y/o bug in this "Ultimate" version of the game.
Nah it's absolutely made worse in this collection, as Tails seems to have to be further away before he has to respawn. As such, that allows for much more time spent stuck and trying to get to you.
I've been playing the originals on an actual genesis for ~15 years and I can say this is definitely not an issue in og Sonic 2, I have never seen this. As long as Tails is off camera for a set amount of time, he'll start to fly down from the top of the screen and he cannot interact with level geometry while that's happening.
The Japanese version of Sonic had the instant spike death fixed, as well as many other enhancements, such as faster clouds, and raster water ripple effects, in the water stages. USA received Sonic first, and Sonic Team used the extra time, between USA and JPN versions, to further enhance it.

SO torn with this. I've got all these games many times over and while I love them I just don't know if I need this compilation. S3&K is covered by Sonic3 AIR, the DLC is pretty meh and I'm not hugely interested in challenges. The only real addition that has big appeal are the animations, but I'm sure UA-cam will come to my aid on that. Maybe if this was released physically, but £36 for a digital copy just seems a bit too much IMO.
Same, I wanna buy it just for the animation from Powerhouse + Tyson Hesse, but fans already made these games way better (than these versions too) with free mods for other official releases. SEGA couldn't even put some spin off games just to add more value. lol

Besides the music, this collection is spot on accurate with controls and visuals. Playing on the Series X with a TV that supports 120 Hz and Dolby Atmos/Vision… it’s the way these games were meant to be played. The price tag is fine by me for 16:9 and, again, the most accurate input since Sonic Jam (which I argue was actually better than the Genesis).
Honestly this is amazing. I never had any of the old games so this be great to own all of the old classics although a bit of a shame some of the music is missing. Also can't wait to see 'some call me johnny' do a review
You’re honestly better off getting the sega genesis classics collection. These are all on there plus 46 other sega genesis games, and for cheaper. This is a rip off
@@hiotsobo It's not, the widescreen with the retro engine are already worth it, and even then the emulation in the Sega genesis collection isn't perfect, it ruins the sounds of the games even more than Sonic origins

@@Gear07 the 46 other Genesis games may not be enticing to you and maybe I’m biased but to me that’s massive bang for your buck if you’ve never played any of them before. If someone hasn’t played the classic sonic games, chances are that they might want to see what that era is mostly about, not the flashy newer versions. I think both are good options but it depends on what your taste is.
Is there a reason why this review does not play any of the music directly from the game itself? Would like to see if I can get used to the replaced music; rather than have the music I will miss being played throughout the review (also misleading for those who don't know the deal).
Can someone tell me if there's different SAVE STATES for Story Mode? Like if I play Story Mode and reach Sonic 3 and Knuckles, will my progress be saved on Sonic 3 & K across all versions? Like if I get all 7 Chaos Emeralds and all 7 Super Emeralds in STORY MODE, will that progress be transferred to Classic and Anniversary Mode or will I have to replay each Mode and do my progress over and over again? Heads up everyone. I found out myself. Story Mode doesn't save your files in Classic and Anniversary Modes of the games anywhere else, you have to make separate files in Classic and Anniversary Mode. I was hoping after Story Mode is complete they would let you select the stages individually but they don't. Continuing will just have you start Doomsday.
The checkpoints you’re seeing already marked off even though you didn’t touch them is because you touched another checkpoint that is farther along than they are. I.e., you are backtracking without realizing it, along a different path than the one you came. The original did this as well, but you’re identifying it as a bug not in the original version.
@@jimmy1929 They didn't leave. That was a rumor Simon Thomley (Stealth) debunked on twitter. They were never at any point Sega employees. They were contracted by Sega solely to make Mania. There was nothing to leave and he has expressed his interest in working with Sega again if they ever contacted him again. Hence why he and his Headcannon team are working on Origins. The only reason Mania 2 doesn't exist is cause Sega never asked them to make it.

I still went ahead and grabbed it just so I could see first hand. I wanted to give the replaced tracks a chance but for me they honestly don't fit the atmosphere of the levels. I feel like they could have even done better with just making new tracks from scratch. Sonic has a long history of solid OST so I don't think starting from scratch would have been bad. They may even could have turned up with something that fit the stages better. I'm definitely annoyed at the decision not to make a physical cartridge. That's hard to look past. With Sonic Mania having one I just don't see why not.

5:30 You’re kidding me right? “The lost Hidden Palace Zone” Hidden Palace Zone was a cut level added back into Sonic 2 for the Android and iOS port and you’re showing the stage of the same name, that has been in the game since it’s 1994 release, from Sonic 3. Yep. This review is shoddy.
The version seen in the mobile versions, and in the version with Sonic and Knuckles + Sonic 2, is actually not the same zone maps that were in the prototypes. The ones in Sonic Origins were attempts to be more true to the original prototypes.
furthermore it just so happens the hidden palace bit was scuffed but not in the way you think. the real one is green. as you can see here, the editor mistook the blue version from sth2+k/3 as the one the review writer was mentioning.
@@SpiderLuke Nah, he's right about that, Christian Whitehead and Stealth added a Hidden Palace Zone in the Mobile versions from 2013, it was pretty cool to see, you had to fall on that annoying death pit if I recall.
Yeah, it was added on the Mobile version, but never on a major re-release, it was stuck on mobile till this release. Now, about the S3&K edit, Kaleidio said it already, but yeah, editor and review writer are different people.
They’re just porting the mobile versions of every game except Sonic 3K which was redone for the compilation so nothing’s new, except the glitches that didn’t even happen on original hardware or before the port
Old versions on xbox, playstation and nintendo stores if avaiable; sega mega drive collection; emulation on pc or other devices; and of course original hardware 😏
Hidden Palace was a scrapped zone in the original Sonic 2 that was later reworked and added back into the game for the mobile version. The games in the Origins collection are based on those mobile versions, so they include Hidden Palace Zone as well.
I have played through Sonic 1 and 2 so many times in my life I can't bear to do it anymore. For myself, Sonic CD and 3 and Knuckles aren't worth the price. Though the challenge mode sounds appealing. If Sega piled the old Master System and Game Gear Sonics on here with a lower price it might be worth it.
I like classic Sonic a lot as I grew up playing the originals during my childhood. No original Ice Cap Zone music 🎶 is a let down though i will picked it up just to have the classic games in digital format on my PS5, PC and Steam Deck.

@@Sonicjan Taxman and Stealth pitched a Sonic 3 & K remaster to Sega. It was only ever the title screen, one level, and one special stage. They never made any more progress past that point as Sega never picked it up. The remaster in this collection is brand new, being worked on by Stealth and his Headcannon team. Taxman said he wasn't available as he was busy working on his studios unannounced 3D game. Stealth said they tried to make the best remaster of 3&K that they could in the time they had. I imagine Sega brought them on after the collection was already announced so they only had from then until the set in stone release date to finish the remaster. They probably would've done more with the remaster given more time but y'know, its Sega.
Taxman didn’t work on this project. Sega is mad at him because he directed Mania which outsold Forces. That’s why Mania 2 was canceled, they essentially have stolen his engine and ports for this project. Don’t support it, Sonic Team needs to learn a lesson about humility.
@@throwawaydetective9080 Quit spreading misinformation. The only reason there isn't a Mania 2 is because Sega hasn't contacted either Taxman or Stealth to make it. Both are open to doing more work with Sega. Hence why Stealth is working on Origins, because they asked him too. Taxman wasn't involved because he wasn't available at the time cause he is working on his own game with his studio Evening Star. He did update his retro engine though for Sega so that all the games in Origins could function as a collection. All of this can be fact checked by following both Taxman and Stealth's personal tweets. Quit pretending there is bad blood just cause you haven't gotten Mania 2.
I'm sure that this is the exact reason why sonic 1 & 3 & knuckles are not on the mega drive (genesis) online also I can't praise sega enough for wide-screening these titles, not really that concerned for frontier for now
i think 45 dollars is too much for 4 old games, specifically if you have already beaten it on original genesis, mega drive collection, mobile ports, and the mega collection which was deleted to motivate gamers to pay it, i think the game should be 20 dollars at maximum or even 15, but 45 is too much for that
Bruh these are made by them. Sonic 1, 2 and CD is literally Taxman and Stealth’s Mobile ports reworked for consoles. It literally shows the Retroengine and Headcannon logos.
You really want SEGA to engage in a extensive legal battle with a record label just to gain access to music for their videogame compilation, when there’s probably going to be a way to mod in the original music free of cost anyways?

Honestly, why do certain games have to have dlc? Why can't they just release it with all the content, even if it has to be 60 bucks. I get it if it's stuff that they started to make after the game was available but stuff like this? Come on. Still tho, love to see these classics being remade for this generation
I’m upset about the original 3 & K MJ music not being in the game, the prototype versions aren’t as good and don’t fit as well Plus the prototype versions they use are even worse versions Why can’t they get this issue sorted out so they can use the release versions, these versions don’t fit as well and the tone and feeling isn’t the same at all. IK there are still versions with the original music and origins will have mods on pc (and the music is online) but still it’s not ideal I at least hope CD still lets you select the soundtrack version
the answer to whether you can change the soundtrack on cd is yes you can, but you have to go into the anniversery mode version of the game first then go to the "Soundtrack" option and select JP. For whatever reason you can't easily select it via story mode.
I actually really dig this review, it gives me a great perspective of what to expect, lowering my expectations. I find it odd but an article says that the Sonic Mania team didn't work on it but Sega and that they used merely provided the Retro Engine to use with the Sonic 3 and Knuckles port. Also maybe an amusing touch but you showed the wrong Hidden Palace Zone from Sonic 3 & Knuckles and not the one from 2 which was clarified as one that returned in the Christian Whitehead re-master.
The Mania Team didn't, not the full team. Just Stealth and they used a new version of retro engine for the Taxman and Whitehead versions so in a way they did. Also Sonic Team also worked on Origins
Would have been worth it if they actually decided to redo all the animations and make them in 24 or 30 fps or even 60.. Nope nothing. NOTHING WAS CHANGED, I can just get these games online for free. Such a cash grab

Sonic Origins was actually mostly developed by SEGA, the actual devs behind Sonic Mania had little work here from what I heard.

If someone hasn’t played the classic sonic games, chances are that they might want to see what that era is mostly about, not the flashy newer versions. I think both are good options but it depends on what your taste is.

Is there a reason why this review does not play any of the music directly from the game itself? Would like to see if I can get used to the replaced music; rather than have the music I will miss being played throughout the review (also misleading for those who don't know the deal).

Can someone tell me if there's different SAVE STATES for Story Mode? Like if I play Story Mode and reach Sonic 3 and Knuckles, will my progress be saved on Sonic 3 & K across all versions? Like if I get all 7 Chaos Emeralds and all 7 Super Emeralds in STORY MODE, will that progress be transferred to Classic and Anniversary Mode or will I have to replay each Mode and do my progress over and over again? Thx.

Heads up everyone. I found out myself. Story Mode doesn't save your files in Classic and Anniversary Modes of the games anywhere else, you have to make separate files in Classic and Anniversary Mode.
I was hoping after Story Mode is complete they would let you select the stages individually but they don't. Continuing will just have you start Doomsday.

2 crucial mistakes with this collection are stopping me from buying it: Knuckles isn’t in CD and Sonic 3’s music.
The checkpoints you’re seeing already marked off even though you didn’t touch them is because you touched another checkpoint that is farther along than they are. I.e., you are backtracking without realizing it, along a different path than the one you came. The original did this as well, but you’re identifying it as a bug not in the original version.
Making a point about no save states makes no sense because this isn't emulation it's a remake

@@jimmy1929 They didn't leave. That was a rumor Simon Thomley (Stealth) debunked on twitter. They were never at any point Sega employees. They were contracted by Sega solely to make Mania. There was nothing to leave and he has expressed his interest in working with Sega again if they ever contacted him again. Hence why he and his Headcannon team are working on Origins. The only reason Mania 2 doesn't exist is cause Sega never asked them to make it.

I still went ahead and grabbed it just so I could see first hand. I wanted to give the replaced tracks a chance but for me they honestly don't fit the atmosphere of the levels. I feel like they could have even done better with just making new tracks from scratch. Sonic has a long history of solid OST so I don't think starting from scratch would have been bad. They may even could have turned up with something that fit the stages better.
I'm definitely annoyed at the decision not to make a physical cartridge. That's hard to look past. With Sonic Mania having one I just don't see why not.

The version seen in the mobile versions, and in the version with Sonic and Knuckles + Sonic 2, is actually not the same zone maps that were in the prototypes. The ones in Sonic Origins were attempts to be more true to the original prototypes.
furthermore it just so happens the hidden palace bit was scuffed but not in the way you think. the real one is green. as you can see here, the editor mistook the blue version from sth2+k/3 as the one the review writer was mentioning.
@@SpiderLuke Nah, he's right about that, Christian Whitehead and Stealth added a Hidden Palace Zone in the Mobile versions from 2013, it was pretty cool to see, you had to fall on that annoying death pit if I recall.
Yeah, it was added on the Mobile version, but never on a major re-release, it was stuck on mobile till this release.
Now, about the S3&K edit, Kaleidio said it already, but yeah, editor and review writer are different people.

They’re just porting the mobile versions of every game except Sonic 3K which was redone for the compilation so nothing’s new, except the glitches that didn’t even happen on original hardware or before the port

Hidden Palace was a scrapped zone in the original Sonic 2 that was later reworked and added back into the game for the mobile version. The games in the Origins collection are based on those mobile versions, so they include Hidden Palace Zone as well.

I have played through Sonic 1 and 2 so many times in my life I can't bear to do it anymore. For myself, Sonic CD and 3 and Knuckles aren't worth the price. Though the challenge mode sounds appealing. If Sega piled the old Master System and Game Gear Sonics on here with a lower price it might be worth it.

I like classic Sonic a lot as I grew up playing the originals during my childhood. No original Ice Cap Zone music 🎶 is a let down though i will picked it up just to have the classic games in digital format on my PS5, PC and Steam Deck.

@@Sonicjan Taxman and Stealth pitched a Sonic 3 & K remaster to Sega. It was only ever the title screen, one level, and one special stage. They never made any more progress past that point as Sega never picked it up.
The remaster in this collection is brand new, being worked on by Stealth and his Headcannon team. Taxman said he wasn't available as he was busy working on his studios unannounced 3D game.
Stealth said they tried to make the best remaster of 3&K that they could in the time they had. I imagine Sega brought them on after the collection was already announced so they only had from then until the set in stone release date to finish the remaster. They probably would've done more with the remaster given more time but y'know, its Sega.
Taxman didn’t work on this project. Sega is mad at him because he directed Mania which outsold Forces. That’s why Mania 2 was canceled, they essentially have stolen his engine and ports for this project. Don’t support it, Sonic Team needs to learn a lesson about humility.

The only reason there isn't a Mania 2 is because Sega hasn't contacted either Taxman or Stealth to make it. Both are open to doing more work with Sega. Hence why Stealth is working on Origins, because they asked him too. Taxman wasn't involved because he wasn't available at the time cause he is working on his own game with his studio Evening Star. He did update his retro engine though for Sega so that all the games in Origins could function as a collection.
All of this can be fact checked by following both Taxman and Stealth's personal tweets. Quit pretending there is bad blood just cause you haven't gotten Mania 2.

I'm sure that this is the exact reason why sonic 1 & 3 & knuckles are not on the mega drive (genesis) online also I can't praise sega enough for wide-screening these titles, not really that concerned for frontier for now
i think 45 dollars is too much for 4 old games, specifically if you have already beaten it on original genesis, mega drive collection, mobile ports, and the mega collection which was deleted to motivate gamers to pay it, i think the game should be 20 dollars at maximum or even 15, but 45 is too much for that
I have it on my Watchlist in case they do a discount for it sometime in the future.

Why can’t they get this issue sorted out so they can use the release versions, these versions don’t fit as well and the tone and feeling isn’t the same at all.
IK there are still versions with the original music and origins will have mods on pc (and the music is online) but still it’s not ideal

the answer to whether you can change the soundtrack on cd is yes you can, but you have to go into the anniversery mode version of the game first then go to the "Soundtrack" option and select JP. For whatever reason you can't easily select it via story mode.

I actually really dig this review, it gives me a great perspective of what to expect, lowering my expectations. I find it odd but an article says that the Sonic Mania team didn't work on it but Sega and that they used merely provided the Retro Engine to use with the Sonic 3 and Knuckles port. Also maybe an amusing touch but you showed the wrong Hidden Palace Zone from Sonic 3 & Knuckles and not the one from 2 which was clarified as one that returned in the Christian Whitehead re-master.
The Mania Team didn't, not the full team. Just Stealth and they used a new version of retro engine for the Taxman and Whitehead versions so in a way they did. Also Sonic Team also worked on Origins

Save states and rewinding are usually features associated with emulation. The versions in this collection aren't being emulated.
They've retained the debug code which lets you spawn checkpoints if you're feeling trepidatious.
