It sounds like from this video that Sega had a lot of potential for sequels but never realized said potential, thus never making any profit. But since these games didn't have a lot of commercial and financial success, they were never greenlit.

I wish SEGA would do a follow up from the Sonic Rush games. I know Superstars is meant to be the new 2D Sonic game, but I feel like there’s still so much potential with the Rush series. Plus, I want an excuse to be able to play as Blaze the Cat again and explore more of her home dimension. We only saw a small part of it in Rush Adventure and some mentions of it in the comics.
Unless they can get the original dev team to work on it, this is a bad idea.

Another Storybook game and Sonic 4 Episode III would've been very interesting to see, but I understand why they were canceled. I generally prefer another game with a subtitle and improved gameplay than just "X 2" or what have you. I don't hate sequels, though. Sonic 2 and SA2 are some very notable sequels.
Yes sequels are cool in case they're have improvement(s), if SA2 (SA1), Forces (Unleashed, Gens) had removed hub-world or you would get one main character instead of sidekick(s) company like ShadowHeroes, modern games after Heroes, Rivals, Adventire, Advance, Riders series. You would only play Sonic but with different gameplay and another side characters/plot. Like you eat same (tasty) candy concepts were reused in good way, SLW, Heroes, SA1DX+2B, Riders, Advance(1,2,3), Fighters had wasted potential for future legacy.

I think Bioware or any other major rpg studio should be given the chance to do another Sonic Chronicle/RPG title. Knowing what they do now with the hard lessons of past mistakes, I think we would actually get a good title.
Pender's lawsuit had a condition where Sega is prohibited from making another Sonic RPG ever again, even without the infringing characters according to him.
@@X2011racer Even if there wasn't the fact that nothing about those legal proceedings are particularly valid(Otherwise Chronicles couldn't have been mentioned in the Encyclospeedia, even if it was only mentioned to say they don't consider it canon), I am fairly sure that is something that cannot really be done legally. That's like saying "No more Mario Sports games". It's just too broad and undefined.
@lpfan4491 As they say, the winners of battle write the history books. Pender's victory means that he can decide what Sega can and can't do under his terms. Should Sega violate these terms, Ken Penders can take further legal action.
@@X2011racer That's not what that means, he did not get a full victory(It was moreso a neutral outcome where both sides kinda screwed up) and by that logic, Sega cannot mention Chronicles or Shade and...well, again.
Its possibly that they can make a sonic rpg that doesn't mention sonic chronicles and instead a reboot with an original story along with new characters that doesn't looks like ken penders characters.
I think there could be some cool potential with a sonic rpg game. Chronicles wasn’t good at all but times have changed. Sega own’s Atlus right? And they’re responsible for the Persona games. They could let Atlus make a Sonic kind of RPG and it would probably turn out great.
Make a whole new villain for the story and have a bunch of the characters as party members with their own unique abilities n stuff. We could have the 3 Hedghogs all fighting together in a game again

Honestly I'm not devastated by the cancelled 3rd storybook, as the entire storybook series is taken down by secret rings, most people aren't playing games for good stories, they want to have fun, and secret rings maked me want to become postal 1 postal dude, and *feed the earth blood*

you know, i still want that lyric sequel. the boom game animation looks so good, even if the designs are controversial, and i loved the comedy in both the show and game series. and who knows, maybe some of the issues present in the original trilogy *could* have been fixed.
There are for sure a few Cancelled Sequels for Sonic and some of the Sequels I wish we got. The one Sequel that I was really hype for was Sonic Mania 2 but sadly there is no development going on with Sonic Mania 2. The biggest Sequel would’ve been terrible would be Sonic 4 Episode 3. It’s kinda weird how that Knuckles never appeared in Sonic 4 Episode 2 but instead SEGA thought it was a good idea to add Knuckles Sonic 4 Episode 3 but sadly the Sequel got cancelled. The StoryBook Games I don’t really care about much. Great video My dude)
I think Sonic 4 ep 3 would of been good I think it would have alot of improvements if it was Finished and Released, I found some like thing's about the game online and it looks like is gonna be decent but it got canceled so yeah, AND Christan Whitehead was gonna help devolop it So I think it would be awesome if it was ever done and released
I don't really get the mild hate towards Superstars. I just find it to be a better Mania since there's all original levels and honestly a big hot take, I find the 3D models to look better than pixel art.

Some of the characters movements can be jank sometimes particularly Trip in her super form but the hate for the game I don’t understand either. I mean people could be disappointed with the game but hating it is a bit much

That timeline presumably does not exist, because if we got 4 episode 3, we probably would not have gotten Mania 1.

Sega asked Christian Whitehead to make Sonic 4 Episode 3. However Sega Studio's Austrailia branch closed
The 2017 drought occured when people said Sega is rushing too many Sonic games. That they should take a long time to develop their titles.
You calling the drought before Frontiers contradicts alot of other internet people's complaints.
If Sega begins rushing out a bunch of mediocre Sonic gamed again, like a cycle...

Something I would like to see in a Sonic horror game would be SEGA making Sonic.EXE canon. Ofc they’d have to change the rating to an older audience because of the nature around EXE, but if they actually did it, me and other EXE fans would be hyped!

I'm still bummed that we never got Sonic Mania 2. Sonic Mania was my favorite Sonic game since the Genesis originals. I had somewhat high hopes for Sonic Superstars, but after playing it, it doesn't even hold a candle to Mania.
7:25 Funny enough, if you're into the modding/fangame scene, you can find a conversion of Sonic Robo Blast 2 that turns it into Persona 3, and it's pretty fun. So yeah, a Sonic RPG CAN work
What I'd like to see are reimaginings of the Storybook games. Like same settings for the games, but give them better gameplay. They could release the Wii versions on Switch or something, but give the other systems the games with the same settings, but with normal 3D Sonic gameplay, just also give Sonic some moves that he had in those games. And then use those ideas to give us more storybook games.
I think they will revisit the series someday. Sonic Team is finding its footing again.
personally i loved Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, i loved all of it, so replaying it on multiple occasions is nostalgic to me

I honestly cannot imagine a third storybook game even conceptually working, maybe I am just not creative enough for that, but I don't see the big potential. Unless of course we talk about a game exploring what realm the world rings came from and all that, but that is clearly something they were never going to expand on considering that underlying plotline was just not present in Black Knight at all. Like, it is so bad that I am genuinely not sure if the book aestetics in cutscenes and the optional world ring-collectibles are a Secret Rings-easteregg or if it is actually meant to be canon, because none of it is even alluded to in the game's script in the first place, while being in a storybook(heh) was integral to the plot of SR.
I wouldn't blame you for thinking it wouldn't work. People were saying the same thing about Sonic and the Black Knight. I still remember people saying "Sonic with a beam sword".
You know, there’s actually an interesting fact about Rise of Lyric that I’m surprised you didn’t bring up in this video, or your video about the cancelled sonic ports. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was originally supposed to be released on Xbox One and PS4, but Nintendo insisted on the game being a Wii U exclusive, and because of that, Big Red Button Studios had to use an earlier version of Cryengine software just for the game to run on Wii U. There was even an original title for the game “Sonic Synergy.”

Superstars would actually be top notch if it wasn't for the awful bosses dragging it down. They could've at least given them a separate act or require fewer hits to defeat them. Other than that, it's still a pretty solid game

The Storybook Series games as games were not my favourite, but Sonic and The Black Knight's story left such a huge impression on me as a kid. Crush 40 did an incredible job with the music too.

Honestly, having the storybook series end on Black Knight is actually quite befitting, given Sonic's speech at the end of the game, so there not being another one isn't too bad.

If they really did cancel Sonic Mania 2, then the franchise might be in trouble. Sonic Mania was the last truly great Sonic game to come out. There could still be hope.

If we got that third storybook game I kinda hope it puts a twist where Hades isn't the bad guy instead following the actual mythology where Hades is pretty chill. Instead Sonic learns that Zeus is the true villain and must defeat him to liberate the realms.

To this day im hoping for episode 3 of sonic 4 to come out.
Concerning Sonic Forces there were plans to do 3 more DLC episodes those being Episode: Silver to show him dealing with the remnants of Eggman's forces in the aftermath of Forces, Episode: Blaze which would've showed what was going on with Princess Blaze from the Rush games during the events of Forces, and Episode: Rookie which would've focused on the Custom Character post-Forces going on adventures using nothing but his/her grapple hook, speed, agility, strength, and new-found Phantom Ruby powers gained from the Phantom Ruby Prototype and would've seen Infinite/Zero the Jackel return as the main antagonist and would've ended the Custom Character/Infinite rivalry and would've according to what's been said saw the Custom Character gained a Phantom Ruby themed Super Form and battle against Infinite in a final fight to not only stop the monster Zero became but also try to redeem Zero.
But we'll never know due to those planned DLC episodes getting scrapped.
To me sonic 2006 deserves a remake/reboot making a explanation and universe breack headche history were we would see Mephiles back taking advantage on time gaps Just to spawn in the future making his own time line beside that I would like to see sonic making use of preview powers kind of wisps, dark spin sonic, dark sonic and well... everbody nos the rest

I know this is irrelevant but that sonic mega collection plus music at the end is sooooo nostalgic! I remember being a kid in the 2000s playing that game on my ps2 all the time. Back then the music was a bit strange to me because sonic music felt so upbeat and cool (Riders, Sonic Heroes, etc) but looking back now, that music was meant to be nostalgic for the people who grew up playing those games. Sorry for the rant, but I love that song lol.

Sonic 4, to me, kinda feels like they wanted some soft reboot that would allow for "Mordern" Sonic to have lived the same events as "Classic" Sonic, or at the very least bridged the two so they could clearly be one single continuity. But I think SEGA has always been very flip floppety about what constitutes Sonic canon.
I actually really love the storybook Sonic Games.
I found a lot of fanfic Sonic storybooks online. One is Greek Mythology and the other has not only Sonic but Shadow and Silver as well in The Three Musketeers.

You are right, I think they will do more sonic series and include the story books or story tales series, and I think they will do a rework and a new game. A good idea to put sonic in the Sinbad story.
Maybe if Boom sequels... went an Adventure route? Split up the gameplay, make speed sections for Sonic, Tails is like a Zelda game lots of puzzle solving, Amy or Knuckles are beat em ups, maybe Knuckles is treasure hunting like in the Adventure games. Kind of same thing I say for Unleashed, if they'd made the werehog stages a different character, rather than forcibly making Sonic the only playable character through... weirdness, and a couple other things. Another big one, the looping boss music, good song but... annoying and interrupts the environmental songs when it's so constant.
I'd say a decent fix to the beat em up style could also be key to its level system. You can choose to pass enemies or engage them, choosing to engage obviously easier to get A or S ranks, while also leveling up your character. If you're impatient, but like a challenge, you can skip these, but makes mini bosses and bosses for the beat em up character more challenging down the road. That's an aspect Sonic has been good with since Sonic 2, choosing your own route making your own difficulty setting. Go up more rewards, go down more baddies and pit falls, trying to keep in the middle maintain that straight and narrow, while maybe occasionally going up because it can provide quicker sections... well you've mastered the level lay out and are speed running.
An aspect Sega seems to forget a lot along with the friends that can do what Sonic can't. Boom too could have benefited from this split and mind set most likely. Both Unleashed and the Boom trilogy were already working off of it being styled like the Adventure games, but they pumped the breaks rather than speeding along with it, then yeah the Sega time crunches.
I was literally thinking a little while ago that a Storybook Series game in Greek mythology would’ve been awesome. I wish so much they’ll bring it back some day.

Things I wanted to see from Mania 2 were Honey the Cat & Amy being playable. Half the Game being New Zones & the other half being reimagined zones that weren't in either Generations or Mania. Sunset Park from Triple Trouble would have been epic.
I actually had fun with Chronicles 15 Years Ago & wanted to see the sequel. Most Sonic Fans would have rather gotten Storybooks 3-5 instead of the Boom Games. Sci-fi would have likely had a level based on Dune considering how sandworms were added anyway, although I'm curious what else would have happened in that game. Horror may have brought back Werehog. Very little happened for Sonic during the 2010s compared to the 2000s.
... Western and Noir would be interesting, but feel like Secret Rings 1 wouldn't be enough. You'd have to include multiple stories and worlds, so Noir is 1 world, Western another, pirates a 3rd maybe despite that already being used in Secret Rings, they don't have as concrete of a single story as Greek mythology or Arthurian Legend (granted a lot of other Arabian Tales they could've explored instead of... dinosaurs as much as I love dinosaurs, almost said pirates too but ehh Sinbad is one of the 1001 tales so that did fit). Like you could make Knuckles Heracles/Hercules, Shadow Perseus, Blaze Atalante, Tails is Icarus or maybe he's Daedalus while a robot like Emerl is Icarus, Rouge as Medea or Calypso, etc. Horror likewise would probably also be multiple stories, but I'm 100% on board lol... oh no the werehog's return LMFAO 🤣, then Dracula Shadow, mummy Knuckles, King Boom Boo returns maybe.
Sci-fi... I feel like it's as broad as horror lol, but well I guess, your Jurassic Parks vs Star Wars/Star Trek.
The biggest flaw in the Story books... was their entire being, in the on rail system. Now I do like Black Night... to some extent, like Sonic 4, Secret Rings and Episode 1 garbage 3/10, but Black Knight or episode 1 coooould push that mediocre 5 into a 6 good depending on the day and who you ask. If there was no motion control right off that bat that's a bonus, and something Black Knight kind of did, making it just for the sword swings rather than everything. Get rid of it completely or like Zelda Skyward Sword optional for those die hards to still utilize it.
Then yeah rails is the 2nd problem and almost as big of one. Sonic is not meant to be restrained like that. Make it sort of like his Adventure 2 playstyle, honestly that's all you'd need, don't need the boost formula, don't need the exploration like A1 or Heroes, A2's speed style was a solid balance of rails while still having some optional routes if you got good. The games would need a 100% over haul, more so than a lot of the other games on this list... but doable and a lot of people would probably be down for remakes and possibly more sequels if the remakes were good.
Yeah, well all the bad Sonic games have that, they ooze with potential, which... probably why this draws people in, has for years, why your video has so many views. Despite their flaws, how bad they are, your 06s, 4s, Story Book trilogy, we want to see the best from Sonic because we see that potential buried underneath, doing stuff little to no other franchises do even when they're copying formulas like Unleashed with God of War, Shadow with COD/Halo etc shooters, Frontiers Skyrim/BotW/etc open world RPGs. We want best for our blue blur boy.
Then yeah at the end... kind of the bonus and flaw of Sonic games, they used to do what other games didn't, sequels always did better, unlike your Mario 2's or Zelda 2's, making movies or game sequels is hard because you either do more of the same or something experimental, yet Sonic redefined and refined with sequels. Keeping moving ever changing has its benefits, but you're also more likely to fail especially if you move on forgetting what went wrong before. All of these games could be refined and redone to excel just as much as SA2, Sonic 2, 3&K, Generations, Mania etc if they sat down and reused their older ways of thinking. On the other hand... then you become the Mario franchise and it's boring because it's too much of the same thing. As fun as I might have with New Mario DS or 2DS, Wii or Wii U... I'm not and haven't replayed them because they weren't my favorites like Mario 3 and World, Galaxy, and it's just more of the same, save the princess, new gimmick power up here, blah blah blah.
Delicate balance, that a lot of game companies don't seem to realize. You can't remain the same, but you also shouldn't forget what worked before.
Not only that, but Sega should give 2D games the same respect as 3D games. Because some games were scrapped for that reason. 2D animation was invented about a century ago, but is it considered outdated? No because people kept revolutionizing it.
Honestly I would’ve loved to see another Sonic Chronicles, that game was my childhood! Screw Ken Penders… and same with the rest of the games, THEY ALL HAD SO MUCH POTENTIAL

I loved Sonic chronicles…. I played it a view times and I was very sad that it don’t get a second chance since I saw much potential for it to become realy good! 😢
Hounstely I wish there was a game like a sequel to sonic rush where we went into blazes world to stop a threat or something as in those games blaze came from a different world it would have been Interesting to build on the lore of the sol emeralds!

as a Sonic.exe fan, knowing how HARD it is to make a family friendly series like this into a horror game is, makes me ecstatic to think what a legit Sonic horror game could've been like...

I will always say that the storybook series would have been decent if they were proper games and not gimmicky messes with the wii remote if it was a controller and a regular game they would have been so sick and i will always bring that up
Beat Secret Rings on Wii a couple years ago.
That game is physical torture, and I'm pretty sure that playing it is akin to being subjected to heinous war crimes.
@ytsuxmuhd4998 facts the game is torture but ill always say the direction with sonics character and how he acted and the story had potential the game is just a tedious mess to control because of the wii remote if they made this with a normal controller and like other sonic games it would have atleast been decent

@ytsuxmuhd4998 honestly if they just didnt make secret rings how it was or with the gameplay style it has and instead made it originally like they made other boost sonic games like unleasheds day stages then secret rings would be a decent game. Black knight as a boost game but with the fighting combos of frontiers would be a decent game. Its the way they handled the gameplay that ruined these two
@@kara9516 absolutely agree. I just, again, dunno how they'd actually handle it's execution. I'm a skeptic of the development process because of the overbearing nature of both Nintendo and Sega.

While I agree this series shouldn't linger so long in one place, I feel it needed to at least try to polish it's concepts more. Maybe a third game in a given series. Establish a status quo before shaking things up.
