Considering that HR probably had a lot to do with developing Ukraine's war strategy for the last year, these people have some pretty big britches already. I must say the Power Law chart Niall Ferguson showed us was shocking in that it did not, and judging by the caveats it could not, include Poland. Poland has given Ukraine the Soviet era tanks and aircrafts that the Ukrainian army is already trained to use. By doing so they kept the Ukrainian army in the fight. The same is true for other former Soviet European countries. You cannot easily measure such contributions financially, but it is a critical factor. Even without those caveats the United States would doubtless still be the biggest contributor with the UK possibly in second place but Poland could take its rightful place at the top as well. Why use such caveats when they diminish rightful credit to an ally? I am not Polish nor am I paid by Poland, its princes nor its politicians.
Yes, I found that chart strange too. Surely along with Poland, Germany and the Netherlands should be on it too. It looks like there are more bars than there are names of countries down the left side… I wonder why they would do that?
The chart is wrong of course. What it looks like is an extract from the Kiel Ukraine Support Tracker (which everybody uses). The 2nd bar would be the European Union but the name label is missing. That then explains why Germany and Poland are not shown separately. However, the presentation is inconsistent because small EU states such as Sweden and Denmark *are* shown. So, zero marks to Niall Ferguson for this chart which embeds several errors and inconsistencies.
The way to fix the next generation (i.e. my generation): make analysing these discussions between educated, well-meaning men and women a mandatory part of the school curriculum.
Also one of the most eloquent. It was to notice here how some of his more ascerbic comments were picked up a bit late by the Americans on the panel ..!

Bearing in mind Douglas's points on woke-ism and now Charles supports Manchester University investigation into the Monarchy's links to slavery. "I hope the Monarchy continues to unite people in the UK." Somebody hasn't been paying attention... UK is one of the most divided country in the west. Good chance it breaks up in our lifetime.
Saying it is up to the Ukrainians is, I believe, a coded way of saying that the Ukrainians are what Teddy Roosevelt called “the man in the arena “ who has the direct power to take matters into his own hands. That’s what Zelenski did at the start: exercise that prerogative when he asked for ammunition. Now the men and women in the arena are fighting fully motivated and the Russians are dying. It is not too much to say that they hold history in their own hands and the West is kibitzing, but also sending lots of nice weaponry and training. If the Ukrainians can permanently cut the land bridge to Crimea, I think they can inflict a decisive defeat on Russia, even it takes some time to starve them out of the peninsula.
The West/ NeoCons/ Victoria Nuland should never ever of backed the coup against the ELECTED government of Ukraine 9 bloody years ago. 14,000 people died BEFORE the invasion. The Russian civilians in the Dombas have been shelled by ruthless Azov for years. Where have you been? Let the oppressed Russian ethnic East brake away. The burning alive of Russian civilians at ODESSA destroyed Ukraine for many ethnic Russians. Freedom and Independence for the Dombas. The NeoCons destroyed Iraq Syria Libya Afghanistan and will end up destroying Ukraine. We need negotiations ASP.

Editing to add: How could all these intelligent people seemingly be oblivious to the role of the US in provoking the war in Ukraine?
Right you are: The Fellows' continued parroting of the Washington 'party line' on Ukraine -- in which 'we' are the good guys and it's up to 'us' to make sure Ukraine wins -- has begun to put me off this podcast, whose weekly appearance I used to await eagerly. McMaster in particular flogs this standpoint, though he at least has served his country. Too many intellectuals and other public figures have no compunction about waging war as long as others are doing the dirty work. Will Ferguson's young children, the product of a 'rootless cosmopolitan' union between an Anglo-Scotsman and a Somali-born Dutchwoman who've both been given American citizenship, even consider military service as an option? I wouldn't hold my breath.
Good point. Even those of us with western, liberal background cannot fail to see how the UK and USA have been doing dirty politics for years...look at the Chagos Islands, for example...
Iraq and his light touch approach to banking were terrible mistakes and not exactly insignificant, but he also did some great things, both nationally and internationally. The answer to Murrays's question "why does only America have a founding sin?" is so obvious I'm surprised and disappointed he needs to ask. Because America is always so keen to present itself as pure and good beyond the reach of other nations: that's why.
48:44 Probably the most important thing mentioned in the talk (among a lot of important things). This is something I have encountered in many parts of the developed world (not just North America or Europe), is that many in the younger generation do not appreciate what is available to them. There is no society that is 100% fair but having opportunities available and simply living a comparatively better environment is something that the developed world offers and is lost on them.

We have yet to see how much damage to the UK that Blair did. He saw racial tensions in the US and thought, we could do with some of that. He decided to entirely change racial demographics beyond all recognition in contradiction to the will of the UK population. Having ended the scourge of PIRA terrorism (by giving them everything they wanted it was not impossible to give) he decided we could do with some Islamist terrorism. He decided to invite in both Pakistani Muslims (who were largely Deobandi (an anti-British radical Islamist sect).and Indian(s who also have a victimhood culture and hate the UK) Hindus, to see if they decide to have a re run of '47 on our streets. Cameron, declared himself the heir to Blair, and with Hyper Immigration said, hold my beer.
Labour or Tory doesn't matter. These people support mass migration for wider agenda to cause civil unrest. Likes of Douglas Murray and Niall are part of the cabal that support division at home, war abroad and endless ar$€ kissing for Israel
That's right. The bus leaves town everyday. Personal responsibility is absent in society's new generations with some old folks encouraging that mentality.
25:47 The US' decline might be us currently circling the drain as the Federal debt interest payments are greater than total US military spending and no one thinks increasing the labor force participation rate and economic % growth is important.
... In 1968 the US was fighting war and facing Rebel Commies in every region plus had debt payments. It honestly made people wonder if safe to invest in US stocks.. Now no big war can hurt US trade lanes or land, and as % with just 3% defence spending not 8% like 1982 or 10% in 1968. So now is pretty easy to get thru.... Debt payments yes might equal 3%, but come on we wasted like in 1968 far more...... Trump realized this, if can borrow at 2% interest hell yeah do so and avoid need to tax business and poor, at 2% frugality is sorta dumb. We pay 2% since world knows EU and China are worst bets, , , , ,... World is tricky, cant just assume what works on small scale is needed for big scale, US can waste money at this rate forever....
Be VERY careful, Douglas is one of those people who listens carefully enough that if you address four people and refer to only three of them as "the most intelligent people I know", that will give him pause. He's also gracious enough _not_ to take offense if none is meant, but he is likely to be quietly disappointed in the level of discourse because of it.
fun fact: the English anthem "god save the king" is a french music written to celebrate the recovery of the king of france Louis XIV. later it will be translated into English and adopted as a symbolic anthem
Douglas Murray is the only intellectual here that I can take seriously. Sad how HR and Niall are prone to repeat mindless mainstream media talking points like that one. Makes you wonder if Niall has ever taken a few minutes to actually listen to RFK. No intelligent person would say that RFK is off his rocker. He calmly uses logic, reason, and evidence in his arguments.
"Is Charles the best man for the job?" Well, considering that he is the rightful heir, something alarming (or at least unsettling) would have to happen for him not to be the one getting crowned.
"There should be lots of ermine" Provided the budget is posted and seen to be paid for by the royals out of their own private purses, with enough detail to satisfy the most traditional Scotsman. Even Americans love British royalty, if we don't have to foot the bill.
"We lack a clear explanation of our strategic vision in Ukraine" The fact that a well-educated and well-informed person can fail to notice for years that free-market globalism feeds billions of people in poor countries in the world, is evidence of this failure. Of course, a clear understanding of World Systems Theory would probably upset middle/working class people in America, which may well be why it isn't justified more explicitly.
19:53 I hate that Americans vote for people because their family member was previously voted in. Doesn't usually turn out well. Nashville, TN has a mayor who was the son to a TN governor and a brother to a US House Rep and he's been terrible.

Draft HR McMaster for prez in 2024!!!
That's right. The bus leaves town everyday. Personal responsibility is absent in society's new generations with some old folks encouraging that mentality.
The Southern Poverty Law Centre - a very well funded, and overtly racist organization - is one of the best arguments against free speech.
I think you meant for, not that I am agreeing or disagreeing on the splc, I just don't think you would watch this show if you opposed free speech
Why because they simply highlight what fascists openly say?
Particularly great episode: DM & NF on one program! GF is superb media. You can hear HR on YT too (from Hoover) - but not the Grumpy Economist?😢
Brilliant, but it makes me sad, as I don't see how we reverse this circling of the drain of western society.
fun fact: the English anthem "god save the king" is a french music written to celebrate the recovery of the king of france Louis XIV.
later it will be translated into English and adopted as a symbolic anthem
Tourism fail not to go full coronation. If you can downgrade a coronation then you can downgrade the rest of the institution.
Fantastic conversation gentleman!!
Facing the sins and hypocrisy of the past can be a force for good when it is balanced by recognizing and celebrating our many virtues as well.
Douglas Murray is the only intellectual here that I can take seriously. All these other guys seem to talk in a way which strangely sounds both arrogrant, and in way which suggests that even they know that everything they say is inconsequential. Really comes across as a bunch of know-it-alls patting each other on the back.
Murray makes me wanna march!
Appreciate Niall's definition of dual-citizenship and dual nationalities
"If I need an ambulance what number should I call?"
"There's no ambulances."
"Sound mate nice one."
the high moral road. what is the "right" thing to do; do the right thing. Always! the light; the shining star of hope; the good in the world. that, is the queen mothers legacy. i hope it has been passed on.
Niall continues to be annoying. 😂. Love Douglas. ❤
I really need to watch this when my wife is done using my phone ha ha oh well
Insightful
Well said JR @16:00
Another gratuitous dismissal of a good man by Ferguson. Robert Kennedy Jr. is not 'obviously off his rocker."
Teach the students about that great Anglo Irish man Edmund Burke.
Sorry but Kennedy is not off his rocker!!!
Very good as always 💯🙏🏼
Sorry to hear about John, my sympathies.
"Is Charles the best man for the job?"
Well, considering that he is the rightful heir, something alarming (or at least unsettling) would have to happen for him not to be the one getting crowned.
"There should be lots of ermine"
Provided the budget is posted and seen to be paid for by the royals out of their own private purses, with enough detail to satisfy the most traditional Scotsman. Even Americans love British royalty, if we don't have to foot the bill.
"We lack a clear explanation of our strategic vision in Ukraine"
The fact that a well-educated and well-informed person can fail to notice for years that free-market globalism feeds billions of people in poor countries in the world, is evidence of this failure.
George HW Bush voting for war criminal GW Bush.
The pictures posted behind the American fella....ARE SICK.....I agreed with nothing he said and this discredits him in my eyes...and then my ears.
Superb pls more my two young children will listen to this !!
Feel like Douglas is the ideological heir to Christopher Htichens....but FAR LESS CAUSTIC. GOD, I love that man.....
Losing Taiwan is like losing Vietnam?!?! Who is the leader in semi-conductors? Who warned the world in Nov 2019 about covid and were subsequently ignored because it was just Taiwan?
