That's what I was thinking too. I struggle with a feeling of foreshortened future as a result of my PTSD and depression, as well as just having bad health in general due to bad genes and having dealt with cancer in my 20s (cancer free for 5 years now, knock on wood). I was so glad when I hit 30 last year because I was sure that I'd be dead before then. Therapy and medications are helping a lot too.

And an extra horrid version of this symptom is when it's actually impossible to know for certain things that matter to you personally (Like I KNOW I'll be gone before people start living on other large rocks, but biological immortality? That could be here anywhere from 20 years to a century)

My thoughts exactly. I do wonder if a partial cause of this common thought-process is our brain's desperate desire to still feel "special" or like "the main character" even when things in life aren't going our way. If our destiny doesn't seem to be saving the world, then at least dying tragically "before our time" may feel like a destiny with some level of purpose for the utterly hopeless.

Even the people who have no sympathy for any pedophiles, even the non-offending ones, should really understand that them having or getting treatment for this would be a good thing for everyone, *especially* the innocent kids that might've ended up being hurt if the person didn't get treatment.

In the first story. When the question of the mother letting her daughter go out late at night down the street: besides the times being less cautious and the place being nearby, I immediately thought of how the girl had JUST months ago recovered from severe paranoia and anxiety about leaving the house. I can imagine if the mother felt unsure about her going out late, the mother also felt cautious about telling Cathy it would be unsafe or possibly unsafe. Worried about triggering her daughter into that crippling agoraphobia again, and thinking you know what, she’ll be fine. I think that was a huge factor in the moms leniency. Understandably believing it was best for Cathy to not have her mind filled with a mother’s worried thoughts about being outside after dark when Cathy was already known to be so negatively affected by such ideas. It’s heartbreaking, and not irresponsible on the mother’s part at all in my opinion. The cruel irony of that little bit of freedom the mom was completely right right believing would be best for her daughters mental health a quality of life.. being the thing that lead to her death, is just so twisted and unfair. The mom did everything right and this still happens. I think that would make me lose my sanity :(

As someone who was in high school at the same time as the girl in the first story, her fixating on sixteen is the biggest sign to me that it was a coincidence. The 80s were full of references to 16, like the movie 16 Candles, and songs like Musical Youth's Sixteen, Benny Mardones' supremely creepy Into the Night, John Cougar Melloncamp's Jack & Diane, Billy Idol's Sweet Sixteen, and Depeche Mode's Blasphemous Rumours. I think it'd be very easy for her to buy into the cultural idea that 16 marked the peak or end of childhood innocence, and having already suffered losses I think her going the next step and seeing sixteen as the end of life may have made sense in her grief.

I'm going to say yes, but with a didactic caveat.
      A thought experiment:
The stronger, more aggressive gender has always been women. For whatever reason. So in this world women are as men, men are as women. And history and society, and our species has developed exactly the same except for this reversal of the sexes.
Do you think it would be any different, had women been the sex that was able to physically assert itself to its advantage, justifying it with whatever gender and social narratives they managed to push through.
I'm sure it wouldn't be much different. Women would have established and endorsed a culture of girls will be girls, that's just how women are, might is right, the 'appropriate' role of men is meek and obedient.
And now in 2022 we'd have come up through our long history of violence against men not being prohibited and punished as much as it should be.
My point here is this, that sexual inequality generally, and as, here, it specifically relates to violence against the Other Gender, should be seen for exactly what it is; what is gotten away with is rooted only in possession of the ability to physically bully others into acceptance of submission by force.
That's obviously clear with instances of violence against women.
But it's the foundation of ALL OTHER' sexual inequality and prejudice. This is the case for each less blunt, more obfuscated example there is: unequal pay, gender 'roles' that aren't unimposing, rape tolerance and justification, marriage laws, laws of inheritance, EVERYTHING.
We've claimed our liberties and right to restrict those of others because we CAN.
It has no other legitimacy except where other, non-sex basis are uppermost.

    • @industrialover
      @industrialover 2 роки тому +23

@Marika Aryah I didn't say it doesn't happen to men. I'm asking if something would be done if violence against men was just as bad as violence against women. I'm seeing more than one comment on here pointing out that it happens to men too and that's not the point. Men don't walk around everyday worried for their safety. Men don't avoid certain places if they're alone because of their safety, not the to the extent that women do. Women fear violence, men fear ridicule. Violence against women is a real and serious problem.

So you know, research since the 90's has shown that awareness of "stranger danger" has long been shown to be a negative because strangers are far less likely to commit these types of offenses AND it tends to make children/people less aware of and willing to believe the dangers of acquaintance or family predators.

The horrific way in which it happens, the fact that she was right and you were wrong, you weren't there with her even at the very least when she did pass... God how do you proceed as a mom? I don't know. I don't know if I could. I don't think I have the strength to not just take the easy way out and just join her asap. God bless this mom. 🙌🏻

In regards to the Elsa doll let me tell you a story.
When my brother and I were kids in the mid 90's we had Furbies. And as is pop culture knows Furbies are evil. The battery connection or something makes them go off randomly and they talk to each other etc so we decided ours were possessed and threw them out. My mother and aunt knew about this (aunt lived with us, single young parent), said "well when opportunity knocks..." and got them out of the bin to mess with us. For like 3 months they'd show up all over the house when we least expected it. Now we weren't terrified nor did we really think they were evil it was just what was going around school etc so looking back as adults its bloody hysterical and makes for a great story.
If we had been truly scared they wouldn't have done it but it was kinda fun wondering where they were going to show up next (the best I can remember is the fridge when going for cereal in the morning).
I 100% believe the dad is doing it to mess with the mother.

    Thoughts in each story
Story #1: definitely a creepy coincidence. What I find scariest though is that it sort of happened AFTER her fear of dying went away. It sort of reminds me of this theory of if you knew how you would die you’d avoid it at all cost but as soon as you let your guard down it would actually happen
Story #2: I think your theory may be spot on. He doesn’t seem to be violent or protesting anything so it’s most likely he just doesn’t want to be in the outside world. Also I don’t know anything about law but as you mentioned staying silent when you can talk might add a few more time to his jail sentence
Story #3: I’ve actually come across this on TikTok of all places. It’s usually someone else’s audio telling a story or a serial killer or similar and then the video is someone else either baking something or making art or something from resin. They do typically have warnings but not all of them
Story #4: While I do believe in haunted object and the like even I know most of the stuff online is either staged or fake. This seems no different. My assumption is that perhaps for the first time her daughter might’ve dug it out if the trash. It doesn’t seem unlikely if it was one of her toys and it was on top of the trash making it pretty easy to access it and hide it. As for the second time seems more likely to be the husband as he could’ve easily lied about putting it at the bottom of the trash as he’s the one who took it out.
Story #5: From the bit of info we do know it does seem that they person who broke into his house did have mal intentions as he covered up the camera. Still though without a lot of info there isn’t any clear cut investigation that can be done

I babysit a 9 year old girl whose parents work very often, so she doesn’t really receive a lot of attention and her parents definitely aren’t monitoring what she’s watching all day. When I tell you, the stories I have heard heard her tell me (you know how kids like to tell tall tales to seem cool or just embellish)…she comes up with stories that I KNOW she got from the internet…and it’s genuinely scary to me. When I was 9, social media wasn’t even a thing, so seeing her have such a teenager/adult oriented imagination seriously concerns me. I’ve tried bringing it up to her parents or telling her “hey, that’s not cool, that’s dangerous…adults don’t do things like that” but it never seems to change anything. I feel like I’m watching her lose her innocence everyday.

Ok so I'm only 3 minutes in but this is pretty crazy! I always had this strong feeling that I wouldn't live past 40, or something massive would happen to me while I was in my 20s. I just could not see myself as a 30 year old.
Time went on and before I got to the end of mh 20's I had my son. Now I have severe Arthritis and giving birth to him threw me into a pretty decently bad flare-up.
Because of the flare-up, I not only went on meds that put weight on, I became bedridden and wheelchair bound so I can't really exercise. I'm over 100lbs heavier than I was in my 20s. I'm nearly unrecognizable from my previous self (before the birth of my child.)
I think I couldn't picture myself looking older because I look just so different to what I do now.
