- Pulled this Jeep Cherokee in thinking it would be a quick easy simple fix, I struggled bad with the diagnosing the exact issue with the engine. However, I never lose a battle with a Jeep engine with all my experience I have of the many years working on Jeeps. I did stumble across the issue, which was rather easy fix, just not a common issue with Jeep 4.0 engines. An absolute first for me but as these continue to get older, I feel like new issues with keep showing up. Hope you learn and enjoy also!
Hey Bud I'm not sure if you located the culprit of the intermittent loss of compression but here's something to consider. I worked for a Chrysler/Jeep dealership late 90's to mid 2000's I cant recall the bulletin number at the moment but there is some info out there. Anyhow, I actually experienced this exact symptom on at least 2 separate occasions. However I kinda recall it being cylinders 3-4 or possibly 4-5 that were effected but what was happening was one of the cam bearing s had walked out of alignment. This caused a sudden drop in oil press. then it would return as fast as it left. Then the lifter would partially/fully (?) collapse. This may be another one. I very well may be way off-base but just wanted to throw it by you.
Thnk you for your dedication and supreme work on YT!!!!
Something about a Jeep xj running hot always comes up in Conversation. ALWAYS
New cooling system with a flush will fix it, just gets worn down quick cause it wasn’t designed for the 4.0 it was designed for the 2.5 but they used it anyway
Thanks for the great video. Whenever I watch one of your videos I get revitalized on working on my '97 zj with 211,ooo mi. on it. I love the 4.0 engine and would like to keep it running forever.
I've always used about 3 feet rope shoved down the spark plug hole. Rolled it to top dead center and you can easily remove the keepers and springs.
I had this on a 95 limited i picked up for my son. Zero compression on number 6. Pulled the rocker cover and there it was, broken valve spring! My dad, my son and i worked together to replace the spring with the head in place and it fired right up.
I had this happen to VW motor ,I took the springs to the VW shop I worked at and showed them to the owner of the shop and he looked at them and said they broke because of the rust that was on them. I replaced the two springs and 4 days later 2 more broke on the other side of the motor they had rust on them too. So I replaced all the spring on the valves and never had a problem after that. It looked like you have a lot of rusty springs under that valve cover.
👍👍 thanks for taking us along. It's always interesting to see how other people diagnosed problems
That's a good find. Not something jeeps are known for breaking
I’ve got an 01, went through hell trying to source a misfire. Long story short, check your valve springs for weakness &/or your exhaust valves not closing fully due to carbon. Mopar actually had a service bulletin back in the day calling for a seafoam-like spray to be sprayed into TB at 2k rpm’s. I would try tap water, it’s free. Idk if this helps, but it’s worth a shot. Good luck 👍🍀
What I love about you is uour desire not to give up, you are going to figure it out.
Best part of this video: I'm gonna fix it up cheap "and help someone get a job." Right on.
Show us how to make that starter relay you use.
I figured it was either a sticky valve or a valve spring .if it was me id pour slowly some seafoam down the throttle body while it was running to clean up the combustion chambers .prolly still a pretty good jeep dex.always like to watch ur videos ur diagnosing skills are very good .always gives me ideas !!!
I all ways dump it down the vacuum line going to brake booster
I know it’s gotta suck when you have a eureka moment and you’re all alone in the shop. I’d be walking over bothering brother all e
Excited
When you become an expert on one make and model you can fix almost anything that comes your way and your faster about getting it down than most others.
love this channel
Good video. You know what you’re doing.
Great content 😄, thanks for sharing 👍.
Maybe a valve spring is broken and it's not letting the valve shut all the way sometimes
This, or a valve is hanging open because stale fuel varnish on the valve stem/screwed up valve stem guide.
Great video!
Thanks for the video buddy . Alot of help I have a comanchee with 140 k doin the same thing. You just confirmed my theory. I didn't want to believe it. I've only seen it happen on the fords
Good show
Nice find & fix😎☕
Fill the cylinder up with rope’ like 3 strand nylon or paracord wind up with the piston and it will push both valves up hard.
Put a plug socket over valve collets and give it a sharp couple of wacks it will fly to bits
There is a tool that compresses the spring to remove and refit but you can get creative with a old ball joint separator and rope to lever the spring hat down to put the collets back in
love this!
This was a interesting one i belive i bought my xj maybe in 2017 or 2018 and i still to this day never had a 4.0 leave me stranded. Fuel pumps yes not the engine.
Pretty interesting
Where is the video of your flooded junkyard? You took it down
I dealt with an odd issue it was a misfire that would come randomly then leave randomly and it wouldn't happen very often but when it did i would test everything I thought it was an electrical issue or injector or something like that because it would come and go. It turned out being a dropped valve seat the seat was completely destroyed and gone the valve was very deep up in the head when I removed it. But there was zero damage to the cylinder or piston and it would have compression in that cylinder. I know when I took the engine apart it had been running fine for a while I never nailed down the problem but it started running fine and I drove it for a while until I had another engine to put in it for a refresh and when I took that engine apart I couldn't believe it. So that cylinder was somehow losing then gaining compression and that's where my miss came from I really don't know how it ran so well or gained compression back with the valve seat completely gone. That problem drove me nuts I kept tools in the jeep waiting for it to happen so I could test things when it happened and it would stick around for a good while and it seemed to go away if I ran it at low rpm for a while which was odd I'm not sure if that was related but I tried a few times and it worked Everytime id sit at low rpm on the highway and the miss would go away then randomly days later it would come back. This was cylinder 3.
The Chevy 4.3 uses to do the same thing. Valves get stuck in the guides
It was the rust that broke the valve spring.
This one was fun.
Dude that is crazy
I have an 04 Tj that does something similar. 175 psi when testing, but when it runs it sounds like it has a burned valve. Miss at idle but runs good.
RHD Jeeps are rare in New England, most have rusted away...........
I’ve seen a few rhd jk’s in NH, shocked the hell out of me when I saw them
How's the valve spring? Sugar sticking the valve would be tough to justify if the springs were good, I'd think?
Made this comment before I finished the video lol. I see the answer
I got some jeep questions as I always do
What brand of fan clutch is best if you can't find a oem
And have you seen a 4 liter leak oil out of the head gasket area on passenger side behind distributor right above the starter has new vavle cover gasket new oil pan gasket all gasket in oil fliter adapter and new rear main
You need to do a video where you and Dylan Vaughn go hill for hill
Check the pressure in your radiator 12 to 15 lb maybe that's where your compression is going
Thank you for the video. I do have a question for you. I have almost the same Jeep Cherokee RHD. It has a reman motor or at least that is what I was told. It is missing its clutch fan and I can't figure out where to even put a clutch fan. Can you send me a picture of where the clutch fan and mounting point are at please. Thank you so much
I had a small block Chevy that kept bending pushrods it ended up being a broke valve spring. The spring was over lapping itself and wouldn’t allow the valve to open all the way
Positive Crankcase Ventolation.
Rusty internals?
👍🏻
95 jeep Cherokee had burnt valve replaced head now runs worse any ideas missing new cap button wires plugs injectors and head with new springs valves etc
did they make rhd jeeps just for usps or were they meant to be exported? cool stuff tho. I no longer have a jeep but always enjoyed working on mine when I did
We have / had rhd jeeps in the UK
Nice
Dude!!! I need you to help me fix my 2014 Jeep Patriot!!!!
Man, you always put out videos about problems I'm also having.... but with a toyota. Fresh rings and rod bearings, 135 compression, plugs are black within 30 seconds of running. I pulled egr off but trying factory carb. I'm 99% sure I just need a weber and it will run right. But I just don't see why I can't get this factory carb to run right. Idels good with clean plugs, drives good until load and bogs out. I've adjusted carb mixture all the way from 1 end to the other while checking plugs. Always running too rich. I'm mainly just venting since my dogs are tired of hearing about it... but any suggestions will be appreciated and tried. 22r motor
I used to have a 22r the mechanical fuel pump might be working but not the right way have a look at it something overfueling and that's about the only thing that can do it other than the carb(and you have checked the carb already)
@jarrynsmith I've heard if it don't have the spacer on the mechanical fuel pump... it will pump more pressure. I still have the spacer on it. I pulled the carb again today, I'm about to go through it.
@jarrynsmith found 2 things.... missing o ring on fuel mixture screw, and my d.a. didn't plug in the vacuum line to the diaphragm that let's the main butterfly open wile giving more throttle
valve spring or maybe bad roller/rocker/lifter? maybe cam lobe is completely screwed
nailed it!
I think the valve is getting stuck open pop open the over immediately after firing it up
Is there somewhere we can buy your shirts bc they look nice
Do you have a preferred brand for wj rear ball joints?
It runs hot, so they put that stupid fan in there without a proper shroud. How was that better?
Out Of All Cherokee What's The Best Year You Like hopefully you get to this comment and reach out and answer I do watch all the video's since I'm a Cherokee owner as well
Bro that thing has some wicked noise inside it, maybe open the valve cover and take a look
I don’t know about y’all, but I’ve had crap happen to me that I’ve never heard of before also. Who else can relate?
Lol I told you
Bad valve guide that’s binding the valve
Are you my dad?
What's the email for DexJs?
