when i was drag racing small block mopars we would build a motor run a minute load on trailer drag race that night never heard about breaking in a cam before covid
I am at this exact same place but cylinder #1 instead of #4. I put full synthetic in it the last oil change 3,500 miles on that oil change. I don’t have any oil pressure but haven’t since I’ve owned it for 18,000 miles! Fyi it has a Jasper Engine in it. I’ve changed cam sensor, crank sensor, plugs, coil pack, swapped injectors. I need to pull the valve cover is my next move. Thanks for videos! I personally like them all!
I had a tick in the 1990 2.5 litre Dakota that would not go away,, sold the truck and the guy pulled it apart 121k truck two flat cam lobes... He scrapped the motor and swapped in a 3.9 239 cubic inch v6
Better than new after Dex rips into the 4.0. Would of been interesting to stroke the 4.0 since you had most of the motor apart! Especially with a turbo!
Rebuilt my 2.5L and had to hunt for the "old" Delo400 oil to get the zinc. It's a brave new world folks. It almost seems they're actively trying to wreck our old motors.
2000- early 2002 4.0 engines had heads prone to cracking and mopar came out with the TUPY head on later 2002-2006 4.0 engines. As for a good channel about oil or engine related is Lake Speed JR's channel which is "The Motor Oil Geek".
Brought 2 new TJs a 97 and 06 the first and last sold in Tamworth NSW 🇦🇺 I drive daily 98 TJ with 440000 ks no rust and since 97 never had a head crack issue 😀✌️. Iv also owned 3 mint XJs and family members own XJs and still daily driving them today manly country driving but guess what no head issues or this stupid over heat problem people go on with . TJ and XJ s RULE .
Dex, I love your videos - keep up the good work. I have to comment on this one. The video showed the engine had a cracked head which you replaced. The bad lifter was probably from the cracked head, not from using synthetic oil. There is a lot of new research that shows that flat tappet lifters work fine with synthetic oils AFTER a proper break-in using conventional break-in oil with ZDDP. Check out the Oil Geek videos.
This seems to be a problem with all the flat tappet lifters and cams nowadays. Ive been reading posts and eatching videos for small block chevy engine builds and people who have built 100's or possibly 1000's of them have said the last few years its 50/50 on wiping out a cam lobe/lifter/both within a couple hundred miles, if not during the first 20 minutes(break in). As the automated world has moved to mostly roller cams and lifters, many lifter manufacturers have outsourced their lifter to overseas and the quality is not as good. I think elgin is one of the few(possibly the only one) that still makes their lifters here in the U.S. And yes, you are 100% correct about using full synthetic on these old antiquated engines and the lack of zinc in moder synthetic oil. I do jave one question though. Fo you think the bearings(main, rod, and cam) should have been changed being that all those metallic particles were circulating through the system?
i tried to do injector upgrade on my 95 xj for some reason it would not fire the 2 middle injectors even pulled some from my other xj put the 95's injectors back in runs great again
Ive seen cam and lifter relationship that are ok sometimes and not others because the lifter spins there a grove in the lifter when its lined up almost no lift and when its turned some lift
I just subscribed to your channel yesterday. I have enjoyed perusing your videos and am pretty impressed with your skills. On this one you lost me. Isn’t it more likely that the cracked head and antifreeze intrusion is the cause for the lifters and cam damage? If not I’m headed for catastrophe because I run synthetic oils in all eight of our cars.
so, what do you think about the rotella t5 ? it has zinc added, but it is part synthetic not full synthetic (this is what i use in all of my vehicles from the 1900's)
DEX YOU SHOULD TURBO A CHEROKEE XJ OR DO A TURBO ON A WJ WITH THE 4.7HO OR A 98 ZJ WITH THE 5.9 I HAVE 2 98 5.9 ZJs I'd let you experiment on one of them to add a TURBO. Love the content, thanks

Non tupy 00+ heads are junk. They all crack eventually. Mine cracked at 260k and hurt the cam bearings... Give that much wear and level of disassembly I am surprised you didn't do cam bearings on it.
Did you make sure the intercooler system was full of fluid and the pump was working??? You will overheat the combustion chamber with a turbo and non top notch intercooler.
Put all the jeeps big square rows and paint the roofs red white an blue then fly your drone an take a pic lol it would look like a big flag made out of jeeps from the sky
Check out motor oil geek, he has a video all about zinc. If im remembering right certain additives plus zinc can accelerate wear more than not having any zinc at all.
I lost the #3 piston in my '96 XJ at 370k. Used Mobile 1 exclusively in that engine since I bought it at 96k. Might watch Dex's video on piston replacement. I bet you have at least one cracked piston. Ruined my block, had to get a reman from Jasper😢
Well, you swapped spark plugs, injectors and coils.. no change, then you did a leak down, piston rings and valves hold, then all you have left is either your cam or lifters are smoked.

Those older motors don’t like synthetic oil ? I guess you buy a Jeep with 120k, and being a new owner you want to do the best, you use synthetic oil after decades of conventional oil and that can’t be good.
