    Here's an ironic thing.
    Tim Burton directed 2 Batman movies and later directed the 2001 movie.
    And later.
    Matt Reeves directed 2 Planet of the apes films and later directed The Batman.
    Isn't that something?

    Tim Burton, gifted as he is, accidentally helped shape the last decade of major studio films when you think about it: superhero movies with Batman ‘89, and live-action Disney remakes with Alice in Wonderland. And I suppose this too was a major step forward for remakes and reboots. Which is a shame for someone whose best work is so uniquely his own.

    I remember finding the screenplay for this movie in a bookstore when it came out, and discovered they didn't include the ending out of fear for spoiling it for audiences. Then after I saw that ridiculous Ape-raham Lincoln statue in the movie, I realized it wasn't in the screenplay book because it was actually a fucking stupid idea for an ending that would have made people livid if it got spoiled on the Internet beforehand.

    It's interesting how many celebrities were apes in this movie. Tim Roth, Michael Clarke Duncan, Helena Bonham Carter, Paul Giamatti, Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa, Charlton Heston. There was a de-emphasis of this for the newer movies, and if they already had a profile, it was much lower. The celebrity appearances were mostly human roles, which in a series that focuses more on the apes, I'm glad they didn't try to over stuff it with celebrities to sell it. Less distracting.

    The film's greatest mistake was how generic it was. Tim Burton is a great director when he works on his own original material. It's when he tries to do big budget franchise films that things fall apart for him. It's just not for him unless you give him free reign. This is why I will always say Batman Returns is better than the 1989 Batman. At least Batman Returns feels unique. It's incredibly gothic in all the right ways. The OG with Jack felt GENERIC.

    I remember the beginning, the ship crashing, when we first see the apes, the scene when Mark Wahlberg first entered the city of apes, the two kiss scenes at the end, Paul Giamatti saying "I'd like to thank you" and that bonkers ending 🤣 🤣.
    Everything else is vague lol, although with the ending I remember as a kid being upset because I wanted to see if Mark Wahlberg got arrested. Whereas being older I'm with everyone else in thinking that the ending makes no sense 😆 😆.
    They wanted to explain that it in a sequel that never came. Nevertheless, I agree that this film has some fun parts. Had it not been made so quickly it could have been a fun action movie with memorable costumes, and makeup that will always hold up better than cgi.

Passing the chimp who went first by days and the command ship preceeded the astronaut by thousands of years. Right? Then the astronaut leaves the planet, jumps not only through time but space to arrive presumably on our modern Earth that has also been overrun by Thade in the past? That space anomoly is a "whatever the hell I need in the script" device.

"The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings", "A Beautiful Mind", and "Moulin Rouge!" were nominated that year, with "Lord of the Rings" winning. To settle this whole "is this remake set on Earth" thing like the original, no it's not. It's on another planet all together. The writers envisioned this whole mythology and background and even the name: ASHLAR. All cut out in either editing or the script was put into a shredder machine and then you get this fucking mess.
    The ends is just a set up for something to do down the road or as Burton said "let them figure it out". He wanted out so i think Thade found a way back to operate the machinery in the pod but i dont buy that as he's not smart enough and he went through the same wormhole Marky Mark did and it's Ape-Washington DC in the past of......the same planet he never visited.....wait is that implying he went to Earth in the past or just another planet? See i'm confused.

      It's always wild to me when they do a novelization for a movie that's based on a novel. I remember there was a novelization for Bram Stoker's Dracula in 1992, and I was like 'I thought they said they were trying to stay more faithful to the book with this movie...they put the author's name in the title and everything...but apparently, Bram Stoker's Dracula still needs a companion novel by someone other than Bram Stoker?' 😆

    This was actually my introduction to the franchise. I know it’s not great but kinda wished there was a sequel. Fun fact, the actress that played Nova in the original movie was in this. It was a quick non-speaking role, where she’s in a cage with Mark Wahlberg’s character and other captured humans. Honestly, you wouldn’t know it was her unless you saw the original, and knew exactly how the actress looked after 30+ years at the time this premiered.

    • @carnybusiness7432
      @carnybusiness7432 22 дні тому +1

      I agree Beneath, along with Battle, is probably the worst movie of the original series as the first-half, especially, feels like a second-rate retread of the first (as does Brent with all due respect to the actor). However, to me, that ending was one of the bright spots of the movie. Sure, it's definitely bleak/dark, so I get if it's not necessarily everyone's cup of tea, but personally, I loved that ending as a kid as I found it it even more disturbing/shocking than the original with that ending narration living rent-free in my head.

    • @carnybusiness7432
      @carnybusiness7432 22 дні тому +2

      Yup. Escape obviously has a wacky premise, but once the story gets cooking I think it's very enjoyable as an inverse/flip of the original premise, and by the end, I think it's the best of the original sequels along with Conquest.

    The true beginning of the remake/sequel craze that has taken over Hollywood. The 1968 version is unbeatable. But most kids who grew up with this like it better because they can't handle good non-CG effects. I saw a reaction to the original version where the reactor laughed at the way the apes looked in the Charlton Heston version. This generation has been poised by bad, fake effects.

    • @mttylerdurden9
