  • Fans of Star Wars have been called all kinds of names, and get a bad reputation. I think most of us are just passionate and misunderstood.
Why does this stigma follow these fans around?
Being an older Star Wars Fan and knowing hundreds, if not thousands of SW fans most of my life, I decided to dive deep into finding out why.
Where did it start? How did it get to where it is? What part of the fan-base is misunderstood? I answer all these questions and more including, why did Star Wars Fans crack?!?

They say the same thing about Fallout fans, and Marvel fans, and WH40K fans; basically any franchise that the "MeDiA" has dug it's vulture-talons into within the past decade or so. I am starting to believe it's a cope from "journalists" and the twitterati to demean and delegitimize our very real and very salient points about culture commodification.

So, George said he made greedo shoot so that kids understood Han no choice but to kill him.
Um, hello?? For 20 years anyone who watched the movie could understand Han had no choice. Greedo had a gun on him, and even implied he was going to shoot him rather than take him in alive. Even as a kid I understood this. George just thinks kids are stupid. Some kids are, but most kids would get it.

Agreed, Han was already trying to talk him down, he advised Greedo that he would get the money from the job. Greedo however was having none of it leaving Han with no choice to eliminate him. I was 6 years old when I saw the movie in 1977 and it was quite clear that there was no other choice.
On top of that, it was clear throughout the movie that Han was NOT a good guy initially and Luke had to convince Han that there would be a large reward for rescuing Leia before he would agree to the risk. Han's main purpose was to look out for himself and pay off Jabba to get the bounty lifted. It was only after their adventure in the Death Star that enough of a bond had developed that Han had developed enough of a conscience to come and save the day.
It would be the further adventures and the rescue of Han from Jabba that would finally complete his transformation into the good guy.

Han shooting Greedo was a huge deal for his character as an anti-hero. It showed him to be a violent and ruthless man who would do anything to survive. This creates tension going forward. Is he going to betray Luke and Kenobi? What will he do when he has to choose between risking his life and helping them?
Turning it into a clear case of self defense removed those questions

Since the last Jedi, Disney has been catering to this nihilistic doomer way of thinking, when Star Wars was always a lesson in overcoming the dark side with the light. Now they’re pushing this “there is no good or evil, there’s only choice” way of thinking. The Jedi should be no more and they have never done good whatsoever. It just feels very anti Star Wars. Star Wars always was inspiring to be a better version of ourselves, while acknowledging it’s okay to have dark side tendencies (personal demons in our world), but never advocated to give into those demons. Thats what I hate the most about Disney Star Wars, especially the acolyte. Andor and Rogue One have been the only saving graces in Disney Star Wars

When The Last Jedi came out, not a single one of them liked the movie. Which felt odd to me at the time because I was actually one of the few people who defended it at the time. I'm just happy to see Dinsey failing, and the IP still is thriving through fan creations and Legends (even though Disney is trying to bastardize that now by giving Luke plot lines to Rey and Ahsoka).

I saw The Phantom Menace on opening weekend, and the moment The Force was explained to be a biological thing (midi-chlorians), as a very spiritual person, my heart sunk and never recovered. Up until then, I thought The Force, like spiritual faith, was something that could be cultivated and thrive because of personal choice and will. For instance, I believed that Han Solo could also have The Force if he wanted to; he just wasn’t that type of person, like how a mercenary isn’t a monk. Similarly to you, went through that phase where only SW content was books, comics and the occasional great, but brutally difficult SW video game (looking at you SNES Super Star Wars). Originally trilogy changed cinema with special effects etc, prequel trilogy could never do that and live up to that sort of expectation. It was George's baby and he put up his own money to make it happen. If he wants to go back and 'update' his original footage to match his vision now it was technology possible, so be it. Its interesting to see the additions and cloud city certainly felt more epic. I get it may upset some people but I'm not fussed.
Lucas was getting old an each trilogy would take 10 years of his life. Selling to Disney so it could continue, at the time seemed to make sense. I'm not a huge fan of the sequel trilogy, just fails with basic story telling which I want to like. Unfortunately what seems to have become clear is that it isn't a moment to 'pass the torch', but actively trying to 'torch the past'. Last Jedi as a fan just seemed different. If you didn't like the product, you got labelled with some "ism". I think the template for this was set with the 2016 Ghostbusters "reboot" as a new strategy. Long term it makes no sense. A business won't survive but attacking their customers. Metallica walked into this with Napster 20 years earlier - suing their fans was never going to end well.
Think Critical Drinker said it best (paraphrasing) "Star Wars that you love is gone, destroyed and its never coming back". Acolyte is like watching a train wreck, you can't look away and end up watching more youtube commentary about how bad it is. It has single handedly united the fan base in acknowledging how bad things have gotten. Think its time to exit stage left, voting with wallets and not buying any more merchandise, cancelling Disney+ and no more eyeballs on their shows.
SW has become episodes 1 to 6, Clone Wars animation and some extended universe stories / ideas. It was a good run.

@BrickHive as the franchise heads towards 50 years old, inevitably you'll like some parts and not like others. Acolyte has one wondering, who is this written for? Its all round bad. The characters position flip flops multiple times per episode, seemingly to suit whatever the horrible writing needs at that moment. You end up not caring for any "character" as they make no sense as an entity, their motivations or what they are trying to achieve. Coming back to the 1997 remasters of the originals, I don’t buy GL’s explanation. I think he knew he was on course to do Episodes 1-3, but he was also smart enough to know that new fans that watched them would want to see the rest of the story (Episodes 4-6), and the difference in the CGI and production quality would be quite clear to see. I think he remastered 1-3 so the new Star Wars fans that watched the prequels wouldn’t look at the next 3 and switch off. I think he wanted to give them something that wouldn’t discourage them from seeing the whole saga all the way through. As divisive as it was, I think he did it for the right reasons.

The trouble started when "Episode IV" was added to the title. You don't introduce your hero in the fourth episode, not even in a 12-episode serial, so Luke got demoted ("EXIT: LUKE SKYWALKER! He will neither SAVE the galaxy - nor DESTROY it!") in favor of his father; the correct Western ending was thereby lost, and the story left permanently misshapen.
(Proper structure of Star Wars trilogy:
Episode 1: Luke learns that Darth Vader killed his dad; Obi-Wan allows Vader to kill him so he can be a voice in Luke's head at the right time.
Episode 2: Darth Vader (name, not title) discovers Luke is the Strong-in-the-Force son of the best friend that he killed for hollow power; seeing this as his chance at redemption (every evil thing he did after that was water over the bridge) he eventually allows Luke to kill him Obi-Wan style so that in:
Episode 3: in the high noon showdown on Main Street, the Top Gun Emperor loses to the plowboy because the plowboy is Force-guided by the ghost of the Big Boss's own gunslinger.)

It’s hard to argue a significant portion of Star Wars fans aren’t racist and toxic when you look at how they’ve treated all the non-Caucasian actors. Being mad at a bad film is reasonable; but doxxing, harassing and sending death threats to an actor is despicable. The actors don’t have any power. They’re just doing their job. Even when the movies are good, like Rogue One, they go after the actors, which is insane.
And it’s always been this way. Look at how fans treated Jake Lloyd and Ahmed Best. Jar Jar is a terrible character, yes, but Best didn’t create him. And Lloyd was a CHILD. All the issues with Phantom Menace are from Lucas, full stop. Disney Star Wars is no better or worse than Lucas Star Wars. In fact, I’d argue Disney Star Wars is better, because there’s no way we would’ve gotten a masterpiece like Andor from Lucas, or quality like Star Wars Rebels. From Lucas we got garbage like the Holiday Special and Droids.

Jake said it was bullies in school and the press, and he had bi-polar disorder, paranoid schizophrenia. Ahmed also said most of the hate directed at him mainly came from the press and a lot of that was due to the racist undertones with the character. Again, I'm not saying there are not some people that are racists etc, but it's not on the level some think. Being a shitty actress doesn't equate to hating the character because they're black. There are many diverse characters in Star Wars and other Sci-Fi people absolutely love and adore.

These arguments are all solid. The divide most likely started with the Gold edition changes to the originals, not with the prequels. But Disney poured gasoline on that fire. Not only have they de-canonized the EU and made even more significant changes in their own movies, but they have also completely failed to manage any of their franchises. The parks are in shambles; toys and other merchandise are mostly neglected; all of their animated IP's are remade into unnecessary, probably detrimental CGI versions and foundational characters like Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck have seemingly vanished. Disney openly hire people whom explicitly dislike the brand they are meant to build on and yet they blame all of their failures on a lack of support from the fans. The failure of this Disney leadership is complete.

The last time Anakin was himself was when Luke unmasked him so that's the Anakin he should be as a force ghost. Also Luke wouldn't have recognized Anakin when he appeared as his younger self.
Then in addition to being completely disrespectful to Sebastian Shaw in what would be his last film appearance, it also causes a lot of confusion for new SW viewers as they have no idea who this new actor playing Anakin is and often don't even know that he was supposed to be playing a younger Anakin.
Causing confusion in much of the audience is a horrible way to conclude a saga that took many years to complete. And an even worse way to undermine what should be an emotionally resonant and resolute scene.
Then the prequels were also greatly disliked because of the overuse of CG over practical effects used in the OT that gave the newer films a cartoonish or video game-like quality.
Also, midichlorians were a bad addition because they turned something mystical, spiritual, of the will, and something that can be attained into something that was biologically predetermined like your eye color or height.
Now something that you could once access if you dedicated your efforts to doing so was suddenly closed off to you unless you were blessed by the proper blood count deities before birth.
It also destroys what the force was originally intended to be when Obi-Wan first described it as " An energy field ".
It's detrimental to subscribe to the concept of something that was retconned to only be meant for a select elite few which was now being told to the audience that most of us are unworthy of and unqualified for. Instead of something that we can access and harness if we so desire.
Fables like SW and countless others that existed for millennia were meant to be stories about at least somewhat relatable characters with attainable traits. Not about genetically superior characters with unattainable traits they were just born with.
Now, SW fans went from being the leads in the story to just the peasants cheering for the royal bloodline and our indentured servitude to them.
We went from being Luke or Anakin to just being a scrub in the background with no speaking lines like a Jawa, Rodian, or Willrow Hood - the joke character with the mustache and ice cream maker running through the halls of Cloud City that everyone makes fun of.
Here are some direct lines from the OT that show midichlorians were also a retcon:
" The Force is what gives a Jedi his power. It's an ENERGY FIELD created by all living things. It SURROUNDS us and PENETRATES us; it BINDS the galaxy together." - Obi-Wan.
" Its ENERGY surrounds us and binds us. LUMINOUS BEINGS ARE WE. NOT THIS CRUDE MATTER. You must FEEL the force AROUND you. Here between you me the tree the rock everywhere. Even between the land and the ship. " - Yoda
Can blood counts or even something contained in blood counts perform anything like what was described in those descriptions? Can blood counts surround and penetrate us? Can blood counts bind galaxies together? Can blood exist invisibly between things? Is blood energy?
To end any debate if it still exists, the direct quote of being " luminous beings and not this crude matter " definitively crushes any notion that anything biological like midichlorians was originally ever meant to be any part of the force.
So midichlorians are not only narratively detrimental to the mythology of Star Wars. But also a direct affront to what the force was originally meant to be and represent for all of us.

I'm a younger gen z and I hate the sequels, as well as the current stuff that Disney has been putting out. By far the worst thing about watching a new Disney Star Wars show is that they aren't producing stories, they're giving the most despicable beings on the planet a soapbox to call all of the fans racist and sexist homophobes. I'm sick and tired of it. No one wants to watch the stuff that Disney is producing and none of the people working on it care, what's worse is that it is beginning to feel antagonistic between the writers and the fans. Like when Darth Plagueis showed up in the Acolyte, to me it felt like less like a cameo for money and more like the writers saying: "We have your toys and we will do what we want with them." I'm tired of it, the decisions that Disney has been making is destroying a community. At least I have a ton of EU content to catch up on, so that'll keep me entertained while Disney runs their glorified shitshow.

No one argues about a franchise more than its fandom. If this didn’t happen then that wouldn’t happen then this character wouldn’t do that then that character wouldn’t do this then that character wouldn’t die then this character wouldn’t rise to power then this movie isn’t canon then that TV Series isn’t canon.
I think as the franchise has gotten older and more generations of people fell in love with the franchise and grew up with different changes to the franchise, there’s so much different opinions that the fandom can no longer agree on what is and isn’t canon because of so much change in the canon and retconning. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it and instead of fixing Star Wars too many Star Wars executives whether from Lucas Films or Disney keep and kept breaking the franchise.
I’m not a Star Wars fan but as a fan of another timeless franchise who deals with Mattel executives making stupid decisions, much like Star Wars fans dealing with Disney executives stupid decisions, such as retcons and changing what is and isn’t canon; I can sympathise with Star Wars fans when they complain about Star Wars

I mean, a lot of people got big mad back in the day over Mara Jade (a lot of others loved her) and don't even start on the prequel trilogy so it's not like it was all friendly debate but what Disney did to SW should be a crime against humanity. I noped out after the travesty that was TLJ but have been happy to be entertained by critique of the content that has come out since.
I'm one of those old fans, Empire was the first movie I saw in a theater and I grew up reading as many SW books as I could get my hands on. The Thrawn books are on my top 10 all time sci fi list and when the internet was new I spent time on SW forums and what not and IRC channels. I used to save what I could to buy the toys I wanted (along with GI Joe) and played with them with my friends as a kid. Also played most of the video games in my teens/twenties. No one asked for Disney to 'deconstruct' SW, what fans wanted were good stories told in the SW universe we knew and loved.

They could have written new characters, diverging along a different path that never crosses with the original saga; literally EXPANDING the universe, rather than shrinking it to the point where everybody knows everybody like some lame soap opera about a very small neighbourhood. But they aren't chasing the talent at any level of their productions, so that after every multi-year project sees completion, we see time and again that they're just wasting our time and money. The Acolyte was the straw that broke the camel's back. We're tired of Disney stringing us along, like we're dying of thirst in the desert and they are the only one allowed to dish out the water that will keep our spirit alive; the water has become dirty and unfit to drink, tainted and poisonous. How would a customer in a restaurant react? They'd complain, and if nothing is done to rectify the problem, they leave and take their money, the lifeblood of the company, away with them.

My biggest issue with the midichlorians is that it changed the entire concept of the force. Before, the force was "all around us, binds us" ect to "u have the have the right blood". It took it from something almost anyone can aspire to develop. Much like good character, a good jedi is a person that, through discipline, training, and hard work, could achieve the ability to harness these powers. And like i said before, now it comes down to bloodlines and families. It took something that anyone could do, and chopped it down to "these ppl are special in a way you could never hope to achieve. Really takes away from the whole "everyone is capable of being good, and doing better". Idk, that my off the cuff opinion.

Star Wars is unique because it is the modern day Sci-Fi version of a good religion and people like to stick to that which makes it great (no matter what you think of real religions). But the fact that Disney doesn't care enough to keep the lore smart, consistent, and entertaining while also making boring movies and TV shows is most of the problem. But the new stuff is like a cult comes in takes over the old religion and creates and offshoot of the religion that basically says that the old original religion was false and the god is bad so the new version serves the devil, and all the old believers were toxic heretics. They have made the Jedi evil and the Sith are the rightful force users. Disney Star Wars is like the Gnostic version of Star Wars. All Disney had to do was make the Darth Bane Trilogy into movies and recast the original Luke, Leia, & Han and do Heir to the Empire. Staggering those movies for 6 years and BOOM 10 BILLION DOLLARS. Instead we get the Gnostic version where everything is upside down and Palpatine's bloodline are now calling themself a Skywalker. It's still fixable but no one actually cares enough about the history or the story anymore because its garbage. But its still Gnostic Star Wars to me!

At the time I supported the canon change. My reasoning was they could get rid of the minor inconsistencies. For instance in one book lightsabers did not give off heat if they did there was a problem and in another it caused luke to sweat. But of course now I understand what canon actually means and where the word comes from. Even George didn't have a right to change his story after the fact. Once canon is established it can never change. Buying something doesn't change what a word means no matter how much Disney wanted.

      @BrickHive  2 місяці тому

@katakesh8566 That's a lot to digest in one comment, but I'll try and eat it up.
Let's start from the bottom and work our way up.
      1. I don't believe in Karma, unfortunately. The world would be a very different place if it was real. I do not like the current state of Star Wars.
      2. Content creators can do whatever they want, but it is still important imo that they respect their fans, the content they have consumed, what that means to them, and what would happen if I went back and changed everything. (This is also a silly comparison due to the difference in subjects, forms of art, distribution, other media, other lore, other merchandise, etc etc)
      3. Again, said creator, Lucas can do whatever he wants. I absolutely never in this video said he can't do what he wants. He can go back and have Greedo give Han some flowers instead of shooting him because Lucas doesn't like violence anymore. Whatever.
As a fan who has spent tons of money, time, and passion into his work to have him change it 20 years later without giving a shit about his fans, I have the right to say, this sucks, and it's cool if Lucas, you, or Jesus himself doesn't like it. I can still say it. 🙂
      4. There are many reasons the crack exists, and saying it's because people don't like artistic expression is a hollow cop out of a weak excuse. You need to come up with something better than that. In this video I explained about a dozen reasons.

Yes, they are both Star Wars, and they have flaws, and both had/have hate.
The difference is the execution of the show and the three movies.
Picking out discrepancies in three movies, but still able to enjoy it is one thing, but almost an entire season (which was a total of about 4 1/2 hours) of a show is bad, and not even targeted towards your core audience, using it as a therapy session for the show runner, and messing around with canon is something completely different. The prequels never had the same hate this show or how Star Wars has been handled.
You can keep trying to compare the two, but Disney Star Wars is failing, where before it wasn't.

Phenomenal Video! I’ve started to really hate Disney recently. First, they ruined Star Wars with the Sequel Trilogy. Then, they ruined Toy Story by making an unnecessary Sequel (Toy Story 4 (TOY STORY 3 WAS PERFECT! IT WAS ALREADY THE PERFECT ENDING TO A PHENOMENAL TRILOGY!)) and then creating Lightyear (the worst movie of all time). They also ruined the MCU because they didn’t know what to do with it after Endgame. And just to top it all off, Dial Of Destiny (although not a bad movie overall) was disappointing and the worst Indiana Jones Movie by far.

But as someone who likes the 3.75 inch action figures, I do like to get a lot of the Disney Star Wars stuff but only so I can repurpose them for either real Star Wars displays or something from my own headcanon. I was never to fussed about the tinkering in the special Eds but I didn't like the main big talking points you brought up either.
The Clone Wars cartoon was again something I enjoyed and looked forward to every week. This really was the first proper Star Wars TV show, people forget that and it was George who gave us that. As you said Disney came in and made legends out of the EU SW but they also just cancelled The clone wars another huge mistake as it's fan base was also made up of another generation of new SW fans.

I'm sorry you don't see the difference in how Disney is handling Star Wars and how George Lucas handled it, but that's a whole other long conversation I'm frankly too tired and care little enough to explain to you right now. I'm sure I'll make a video about it eventually. I'm sorry for coming off so crass. It's been a long day at work. If you still enjoy Star Wars, that's great.
Unfortunately, I call out what I feel is bullshit. I see a lot of people that may subjectively like something, but clearly it is objectively bad writing, or bad directing, or has no coherent story, or doesn't make any damn sense if you think about it longer than five seconds, or lacks any character development, or set-up and pay-off, etc, etc, etc, etc..........
Like I said in the video, the new fans can keep the franchise alive now. One good show, One good show with two decent seasons, and one movie that didn't suck ass isn't keeping most of us around. Especially with what they did with the sequels. A lot of us are past any kind of debate any more. We can disagree on shit and still love Star Wars, but Disney does not know what they're doing and it has shown time and time again.
Disney is going in their own direction, didn't want Lucas involved, does not respect the original core fan base, and just loves to jangle keys to keep as many of us around as possible in their shitty shows. Honestly, it's quite remarkable how much Disney has ruined this.
As far as the Expanded Universe now known as Legends goes, that was licensed through Lucas and their were steps and policies surrounding it. People didn't write whatever they wanted whenever they wanted without going through that process. Saying it was essentially fan made is such a disservice to lore, and this is a main difference in the fandom, and why we argue. I see it as a lack of any respect except for anything that came before so Disney can do whatever they want with it and their fans will eat it up and tell the rest of us to shut up. The expanded universe was not perfect by any means, but it still was technically canon, and it still meant something to us. Disney, like Lucas in the past, can do whatever they want. Myself and many others are pretty much done with it.
So again...... if George hated it so damn much, he shouldn't have let it happen, but he wanted that money in the 20 years between the OT and the Prequels.
I hope this was calm enough for you. I do appreciate you watching and engaging.

Excellent video! I was born in 1989, so i watched Star Wars for the first time on tv in 1998 (yeah, i have THAT kind of memory) Anyway. I watched Jurassic Park before Star Wars, so i never understood the complains about the changes made to special effects. If Star Wars was going to enter the 21th century, obviously changes were needed. Lucas himself worked on Jurassic Park to some degree, and he understood the need for new Star Wars movies to live up to the standards set by the 90s. But that is just my personal take.
Ok, back on track. You’re right about us being passionate to some degree, but i think that is important to add something more to this equation.
We,, Gen Xers and Millenials, grew up in a different way. We stuck to the stories we loved from our childhood long into adulthood, while Gen Zers are digital natives, so they were born in the culture of the immediacy and the disposable. What is cool this year won’t be next year, and this trend started at some point during the 90s. They love videogames more than other forms of entertainment, and the majority of their social interactions were via social media since the very beginning.
Also, seeing kids like my nephews and their friends, they don’t seem to be very passionate about movies or tv shows. Maybe they like some for some season, and then, they forget about it and move onto something else. So reboots, sequels, and remakes are starting to fail. Except, maybe, in the case of Ghostbusters and Jurassic Park.
That was long. Sorry. I wanted to talk about a lot of things that could affect future Star Wars projects. It would be interesting if you could make a video about the culture of the 90s, because it seems that the 80s' aged better. The only family movies IP from that decade that passed the test of time is Jurassic Park itself. And the 90s were full of family movies.

I'm an old fan and thought nitpicking over ki adi mundi was kinda petty. Given how many things were changed between the prequels and OT this one detail about mundi just seems so insignificant...
I am more annoyed at changing things like han shot first and inserting that horrible scene bt han and jabba into ANH. It's that han really is more of an anti-hero in the beginning and it's a rough environment he lives in. And come ROTJ jabba basically acts like a shameless psychopath lol. So i don't buy he was a much smaller and fake-nice individual back in ANH. It feels like a completely different character and a different relationship bt him and Han.
Anyway Mundi never said his age in the prequels and he's an alien so he could have a different lifespan and he probably doesn't think the sith exist for all of season 1 of the acolyte just like he thinks they don't exist at the start of the prequels. He wasn't a character with very many scenes anyway.
It just feels like sometimes people zero in on any change or any difference and launch a full on offensive because of it. Like this isn't like bringing Sidious back for the sequel trilogy or something - that was something that actually changed the entire story.
Anyway i also think there are old fans who like some of the Disney Star wars content. I actually liked the acolyte. I didn't like the sequel trilogy. I liked rogue one. I like andor. I didn't really like ahsoka. Mileage varies.

We need to qualify the term "star wars". There is star wars and there is Disney star wars. Star wars fans like "star wars" and despise "Disney star wars".

    Disney is not canon.

I grew up with star wars, I only got into it when The Phantom Menace came out. I didn't get to see it until it was on DVD. From there I followed the series and I loved/love it still. When disney took it over, I had the same concerns as all the others I talked to that were fans.
And I find myself also affected with that apathy you mentioned. I did like Rogue One, Andor, Rebels, the Clone Wars, even the Bad Batch was decent. ....But the movies.... The movies were just so bad. And the Acolyte???? I'll never watch it, I'll never give disney a cent for what they've done to the series.

@englishpolishmememan8892 It's sad and tragic, really. I got rid of Disney+. Maybe one day I'll get a subscription again.

It seems that Disney currently makes movies and TV shows that are mostly for people who are not paying attention, and who are essentially using such visual media as background noise. I suppose there is an audience for that type of thing (personally I'd just listen to the radio or podcasts etc), but as I'm the type to make time to watch and pay attention to a show or movie on streaming, they don't cater to people like me (except for a few projects). Oh well, life goes on, subscriptions get cancelled.

I will probably turn it back on when Andor comes back on.

For the record I still appreciate the canon stuff. Just not Disney. And I will never give people who hate me money if i can help it. And I am not talking about them hating the original fans. No they hate people like me on many fronts.

The sequel trilogy isn’t a series of movies. It’s a systematic years-long crime against humanity. Kathleen Kennedy is a cinematic war criminal, and I don’t forgive George Lucas for selling the franchise to Disney to satisfy his own personal greed.
