As someone who works in a cellphone repair shop and replaces batteries every single day, I see no reason to remove the taptic engine. It's saves me maybe a minute or 2 and that's only if the pull tabs break. If they don't break, I can have a battery repair done in about 3 minutes flat.
Another pro tip. Keep the phone laying flat on its back on the table while pulling the tabs. If the tabs break douse that phone in isopropyl alcohol, and then just pluck that battery right out. Also these things don't explode. The worst that can happen is that you really stab the crab out of it and it spurts flames for about a second, you say "oh shit!" and throw it on the kitchen floor.
The part doesn't need to be genuine, just high quality. Sometimes genuine parts are cheaper sometimes the high-quality knock-off is cheaper. Just so that it works. 50% is the ”storage charge” for lithium batteries.
I prefer a "store brand battery" anytime over an "original battery" with dubious origin. Apple does not sell loose batteries, so at best, you got a stolen good. At worst, it is counter fit and no one knows where they cut corners.

Just spent $41 dollars in China. Having front and rear glass, also battery replaced on iphone 11. Money very well spent and thoroughly enjoyed watching the young tech do the job. Given my phone another life.
This was fun to watch! I worked in phone repair for about 4 years and batteries were always a big struggle to source. In this ex-repair tech's opinion after replacing thousands of batteries, here's my rule of thumb: Only get the absolute best you can find. Everything else is a waste of your time and money. Aftermarket batteries have two main points of failure: aftermarket gas gauges and aftermarket cells. The cells can be of varying quality when not original and so their performance may be inconsistent. But the gas gauges is where it really falls apart. The OEM batteries Apple uses have electronics made by Texas instruments and they are very high quality. They manage all sorts of stuff from how fast is the battery allowed to charge based on its cells temperature, to what its current charge state is, and even relaying to the phones SOC what it's health is to know how much power can be drawn reliably at any given time. Aftermarket electronics likely do not do this or "fake" various statistics and as such you see things like inflated batteries or short life prematurely. If you want, it can be a fun experiment to remove the tape covering the electronics on the battery and examine them under a microscope to see who's truly original and who's a copy. I cannot emphasize how important those electronics are for longevity and consistent performance of batteries. Lastly, what I saw time and time again from all sorts of vendors (domestic and international) was that on phones more than one generation old a sizeable amount of batteries were pulled from old phones, had their manufacture dates scrubbed, and their gas gauge smart stats reset.
I installed a Nohon battery (with bigger capacity) in my iPhone 5S a couple months ago, so far it is working perfectly. It also lasts more than when the phone was new. It would be nice if you did a review of the battery you installed in half a year or so.
how many months ago to be exact? in the philippines we have a counterpart of nohon, which is called "Remax" and im skeptic of the side effects of the higher capacity to the phone itself, will it short some components or break some power related components in the motherboard?
No. It's a higher capacity not a higher voltage. The amount of power drawn doesn't increase, the amount of time that power can be drawn does. The only danger is if it expands leaks or explodes lol
@@Champagnepipa Like 2 months, the first thing I noticed is that it lasts a lot more at 0% and 100%. The other percentages behave similar like with the old one.
@@markbennett6658 Yes, that would be nice also, I could do a test when I have time. The cycle count of my battery is still only 15 and coconutbattery says it still has more than 100% of its designed capacity (1707mAh/1700mAh). I doubt the difference would be very big.
@@techbuildspcs it's not possible unless you have every soldering tools , a telescope that can make you see it very well and buy the processor with the mother board.
Your battery tests are flawed, as you depend on whatever is flashed onto the battery management IC inside the battery. You probably just purchased a scammer's tool of choice which allows you to reset the battery count or write whatever you want, when you connect it to the PC I would guess you can even write whatever capacity you want which won't be corrected by that IC until you will take measurements during full charge/discharge cycle. So to do it correctly you probably have to let it fully charge and then discharge few times and then see what the discharge capacity is. You can do that pretty much with a much cheaper tools like some of the universal Li-xx chargers for RC models(imax b6) or those 18650 cell liitokala chargers but then you need to make some kind of adapter.
He mentioned that you could overwrite IC values on the battery in the video when he first plugged a battery in the tester around the 8:30 mark. So he was kind of letting the viewers know buying batteries like this was at their own risk since you could make an aging battery seem brand new. It would be nice to get an update on actual tested capacity, but I'm not holding my breath.
I wish we could’ve seen resetting the original battery to 0 cycles and seeing what the iPhone battery health reads. That would’ve been really neat. Maybe a future video!
My favorite part was where the lady behind the counter insisted on pulling out all the parts to show they were present before giving him the box. 1. Makes sure he knows all the parts are there. 2. Makes sure he can't remove parts and return claiming he didn't get all the parts.
Its quite a common practice in China because there is almost no return policy. Thus consumers want to inspect all parts of their product before receiving them.

1) Remove taptic engine before pulling the white straps out. 2) Please take care, first plug everything EXCEPT battery into the board, make the battery connector the LAST thing you plug into the board.
Would be cool to see but that would require some high level OS Modification. Also the logo is behind glass and the back is mostly housing the coil for wireless charging so work room is limited.
MXFnGEN housing room is actually non existent without removing at least once cell from the battery and completely removing the wireless censor. Then you’ve gotta use one of the existing connections on the board, and that’s all before making it compatible with the phone.

Second could you please post a link to the battery tester you bought? It seems like a gadget I would like to have in my tool box. Thank you again, you have a new subscriber here
The batteries themselves (Apple originals) are only meant to last about 1000 cycles. However, 80% charge capacity doesn't mean 700 cycles. You can have 80% charge capacity and be under 400 charge cycles. Depending on heat, cold, over-charging, rapid charging, etc...all that can affect the capacity percentage but not the charge cycle. In fact when Apple system does a check, if it's at 85% charge capacity, it'll recommend it be serviced (changed).
I thought you would check before connecting a new battery, whether resetting the amount of charging cycles will help to extend the time of work on an old battery. That would be interesting.
I don't even own a smartphone, but this was so interesting that I watched the whole damn thing. So, Scottie, you must be doing something right. How long did it take for you to master Chinese?

What I've learned from pulling on the battery tabs if you don't want to stretch them, you want to roll them. They don't like to be pulled super far, so if you keep them closer to the battery and you roll them around your tweezers they won't break.
the adhesive is easier to get out if you carefully use a plastic ifixit spudger to wrap the adhesive around it once before pulling at a low angle. also try removing the taptic engine first. if all else fails, disconnect the battery from the board and soak around the battery with isopropyl, then scoop under it with a plastic card, no heat needed.

Ultimate Gamer Makes it easier but for people who don’t know it makes it riskier too
As someone who works in a cellphone repair shop and replaces batteries every single day, I see no reason to remove the taptic engine.

12:50 The battery level of 50% is to reduce wear on the battery as it wears faster when kept near 100% or 0%
That's correct 😉 and dont let your phone battery to drop below 20% it will last longer
Kind of surprised someone with as much knowledge about these sorts of things as he, didn't already know that. That's information that I've had phone manuals tell me.
The "battery level" is different from how much it's charged. You can see the actual charge percent inside the battery icon on the right of the screen.
@@mongohands Ah ok, I see now. What could battery level indicate though?

no because battery are dangerous, its was meant for expert to handle it not user...thats why they make it harder to change, also for safety factor...modern battery has bigger capacity thus more dangerous
You are supposed to keep lithium batteries away from heat so I don't think a hot swap would work, maybe a moderate or cold swap would be better.

Thanks for the good information.
I would have liked to hear how the Nohon battery actually performed IN the phone over the first week in terms of both standby and screen on time?
@@markbennett6658 Yes, that would be nice also, I could do a test when I have time. The cycle count of my battery is still only 15 and coconutbattery says it still has more than 100% of its designed capacity (1707mAh/1700mAh). I doubt the difference would be very big.

I love this channel! You make videos about tech while living in the tech capital of the world! Pure genius!
