Funny thing is there is a fairy fountain right outside the temple where you could have caught several. But this boss is one of those once you beat it once it is always easy afterwards.
I think the two things jutting out from the walls on both sides of the room is enough of a clue that you might think to inspect them. Doesn't seem all that obtuse to me.
Nah I was dying, 10 year old me figured out this room in like 2 seconds, over half the puzzles in the game are pushing something anyway, the hard part is supposed to be figuring out where to push them to.

Probably the hardest boss because you have the fewest hearts dealing with him
If you had the power bracelet or glove (I don't remember which one it is in this game.) as the item dungeon, it would make sense.
