@@PromptCriticalJello Seems to be the same. Atleast it seems to be similar while breaking with a non-hoe. My concern is not breaking even with the bonemeal spent because we composting less now
I think it would be great if creaking hearts only appear in trees grown in the pale garden biome. That way they are renewable, but won't cause creaking mobs to accidentally spawn elsewhere. I also think it would be great to have the option to make the creaking hearts glow with a redstone charge. That way they can more easily be used for decoration. Probably only have them spawn mobs when they glow due to pale oak placed on both ends of it though.
Since you mentioned flowers missing from the pale garden on the spawn chunks, it seems like the perfect opportunity for Mojang to add a flower that gives us grey dye, the one remaining dye you can't directly farm(I think?). Also, another flower that acts like the pink petals would be lovely. In my head I call them Ashfall. Edit: Right.. purple.
Purple comes from 2-high lilac, so it can be farmed! I think cyan is the missing boy you're thinking about (that can't directly be farmed, though its components can).

I think Mojang nailed it with the creaking heart block. Redstone uses, decoration, mob spawning, ambience, mini-game usage. There is a lot to unpack with this one. The comment Pix made about the pale moss not producing as many blocks when bonemealed so that it would be easier to mine with. Also, the ambience of the biome. Fantastic content which is very usable.
Imagine a monochrome 1920s cartoon themed build. Like a little village or even just a cottage made of a black-white-gray block palette. Could go even further and do some terraforming by ripping up green grass and replacing it with pale moss and a similar looking gray block.
I know this is supposed to be a small drop, and not a major update, but one way they could expand on this could be a special pale garden village type. It could look abandoned during the day, but have non-sleeping villagers who appear at night. They could be passive, but unsettling in some way, and should have a couple unique trades (maybe having something to do with the creaking heart). Maybe there is a locksmith villager who can convert keys from the trial chambers into keys that can be used with doors and chests.

I thought that was just if you have a shield in your off-hand? Because right-clicking raises the shield by default if present; otherwise it does the secondary function of the tool in your main hand.
I wish you could display the end texture of the creaking heart in its active state because it looks so cool. Unfortunately it turns back to gray as soon as you expose it. They should provide some kind of workaround for that for builders. Maybe make it show the active texture with redstone without actually making it active?
As a builder I'm pretty used to there being inaccessible block states. I'm sure creative builders will just adjust it with the debug stick and Survival builders will just be happy with what we get!
I think the concern isn't about needing a reason to visit (or revisit) the pale garden biome, but about the lack of reason to do so at night. There isn't any reason to interact with the creaking, unless you find that experience inherently enjoyable. I'm totally fine with having unique building blocks as the only draw to visit a biome, as is the case with many other overworld biomes. However, Mojang has put significant effort into designing a totally new mob for this biome that most players will likely avoid entirely by visiting the biome only during the day. I really want the creaking to feel like it has some meaningful value as a feature, rather than existing to be avoided and ignored. Even something as simple as making the creaking drop pale oak logs on death could provide that value for me, because that would introduce a unique and interesting method for farming what would otherwise be an obnoxious wood type to farm.
I wish there was a way to use the creaking heart like a redstone lampor other light block... it looks so good as a light block, i just want a warm wood vibe lamp without spawning enemies!!
I think the hanging moss might be inspired more by like, certain types of lichen - i'm not sure what they're called in English, but there's some types of lichen that grow in a way where they like, hang down from tree branches, and I think even though it's called moss, the pale hanging moss kinda looks a bit like those lichens. So in that regard I guess it makes sense you can't climb the hanging moss! irl the lichens would be way too fragile to climb on
The fact that the trees are oaks specifically and that it's called the creaking heart means that I've had "Where Oaken Hearts Do Gather" stuck playing in my head pretty much since the reveal, even though there's very little actually similar between the two, just like, creepy stuff, oak trees, and the word heart, and my brain decided to go wandering on its own way...
i've been wanting to push for them to add lighting effects in the pale garden since mincon. like make the fact the garden lights up at night be a point of interest. flowers that you can't see during the day, only to bloom and glow yellow-orange (like the creaking's eyes) at night. i think the mosses and leaves should glow too. a slight bluish, even if it's just light level 1 or 2. i think it would be visually amazing and help reduce other mobs which i agree, ruin the mood of the biome. they hammered down with the "pale" but the "garden" feels like an empty promise. personally, i don't like the desaturation because we have so many biomes which are already desaturated. tundras with the bluish grass, savannas with the dull brown and badlands with the even worse brown. the mountain biomes don't have great colors either (cherry being the only good mountain biome). i get the wood color, and i can see potential for the wood color to grow into stained wood in the future, i just can't get into having a splotch of grey on the world and convince myself that it's interesting.
I wasn’t clear from the Minecraft Live presentation whether they finally gave us painted wood (colorable with dyes) or if it’s only that pale oak gives us white wood. From your video it looks like it’s the latter case.
They've never brought up the idea of painted wood. I think it's mostly because they want reasons for players to get excited about new wood types in future updates, and adding 16 colours of wood would be a huge volume of new blocks without any improvements to inventory management.
I can't wait to find this for my current Addams Family inspired world. This is going to make a wonderful addition to the surroundings and Morticia's greenhouse.
The creaking doesn’t drop anything once it’s dispatched. I get that you are meant to silk touch the heart and that is the “drop” but other mobs drop multiple items. It would be cool if it dropped pumpkins or the regular moss variant.
I really think it would be fun if the creaking got more aggressive as you damage the tree. Maybe one could even spawn in the daytime if you start chopping a tree with a creaking heart in it. It would be like it's protecting the tree.
