I would love to see your vision for J10 not compromised. My vote is to bring in something else for the OnX Challenge and let’s see with a bit more time, how cool this J10 project can be. At first I wasn’t especially excited for it. But, as I see your vision take shape, I’m definitely in it till the end. Nice work Nate!
The more I'm thinking about the build off, the more I'm feeling this way as well. I do have another rear suspension idea that would probably solve my problems back there. But it would take a lot more time to develop! And I think that is what is making me feel like I chose the wrong project. This truck is quite literally the first project I started in the first video on bleeping jeep. It deserves to be completed in a way that will immortalize this time I have here on UA-cam! I don't want to comprise lol. I want a bad ass truck!
@@DirtLifestyle 30:30 Nate I think you’ve got to swap to something else so that you can make this project what you envision and not what you have to do to meet a deadline. You will never be happy with the result IMO. Good luck, can’t wait to see the results regardless.
J10 is one of my all time favorite rigs, and I am a ford guy. I think this rig has huge potential to be your brand ambassador vehicle. Maybe, find a 10th gen f150, a gmc envoy, 1st gen durango. Something different than the usual jeep or mini truck. But still big enough to be interesting off road, and capable of making a comfortable sleeping situation. @@DirtLifestyle
@@DirtLifestyle you should look at Land Rover Defender rear suspension. It is A-Frame upper and trailing arm rear (as per your design 1) BUT trailing arm to chassis bush and A-Frame/wishbone to diff bush is different. Check that set-up.
I actually love where this truck is going. Generally when people say they want to build something "unique", it really means they are going to build something that's just weird. For this build "unique" means thinking outside the box and taking it to the next level. Whether it continues to be the OnX build, or becomes your own build, I can't wait to see it on the trail. 👍
For myself, and maybe others feel the same, I watch your channel for your creativity, your drive & passion, and your skills (Not only for fabrication). And for how you present to us all that you're doing and thinking. Though I enjoy watching you and the other youtubers "compete" in these extra events, it's not what keeps me coming back to any of your channels. Whatever you throw at the onx build, we'll be happy to see it. And we are all looking forward to seeing the final J10 build whether it's redone after onx, or set aside for now and completed later. And maybe, just maybe someday, I'll get to see that TJ run the trails again rather than just sitting in the back corners (or outside) of your shop!!!
Best of luck Nate! I'm rooting for you! The triangulation binding experiments are very insightful and interesting. One weird design I noticed on the Land Cruiser 200 series is that the rear lower links are triangulated AND it has a panhard bar. All other Toyotas have parallel 4 link with panhard. Maybe that's why the 200 has very massive rubber link bushings to prevent binding.
Thanks dude! These rules can be broken, and my test is really just a good example of how important it is to cycle suspensions while building. I would bet the 200 series land cruiser has some other elements that would improve their results. My upper and lower links are the same length to keep my pinion aimed at the transfer case throughout the suspension cycle. I bet the 200 has upper links that are 50-70% the length of the lower links to keep the pinion parallel with the ground throughout the suspension cycle. This small change, in addition to playing with the length of the panhard bar, could make a huge impact on suspension binding. I haven't looked at the rear suspension of a 200 series, so I'm just speculating. But oems usually want to keep their pinion angles flat while the suspension travels because they can make parts like driveshafts for half the cost. This truck will require a drive shaft with 3 joints and a carrier bearing. 2 u joints and 1 double cardon. This will be a kick ass drive shaft but it's super expensive to make. If the 200 series has the suspension style I guessed above, then it will only need 2 u joints and 1 slip in the shaft... very in expensive to manufacture. I know this is a long-winded explanation, but I know you are into these kinds of details 😁. You should cycle the rear suspension of a 200 series with no springs to compare! I would bet there isn't much binding unless you lift it.
@@DirtLifestyle amazing stuff man! you were exactly right. the 200 series has shorter upper links and 2 u joints + slip yoke. no double cardan. so many things interact together! i can always learn things from you.

I couldn’t click on this video fast enough! I love what you’re doing to this truck. Keeping the “jeep” look to it while planning on a completely functional usable truck makes me so happy. And going through all the extra pain to keep the dual rear wheels puts it miles above the rest. I appreciate everything that comes out of your brain dont diminish the creativity for any build challenge and remember why your in the garage in the first place!
Daihatsu Rocky for the OnX competition! It would be so cool and unique. No one would expect it. It could be the baddest crawler on the planet due to its size. Pkease do this!
Now I don’t feel alone in project challenges. Spending time on plan A’s and ending up on Plan C can be really frustrating. Really love the drive to keep the truck going👍🏼🏁🏁
I have some off road truck racing history at the pro level. On our trucks we did the triangulated with trailing arms suspension and was getting over 15" of travel. The thing we did was the wishbone was made to marry the two angle tubes into one with a large heim end that was then bolted onto the axle housing. With that single mount approach you don't get the binding that your seeing with your double heim mounts. Good luck man! I enjoy watching your builds.
I hope it gives you motivation but I absolutely love the fact you are building this truck! Lots of people have done the Cummins thing in almost every car or truck. I am excited watching it go into an off-road recovery vehicle and the challenges that come along with it! Look forward to the road to and the final product!
Thanks for the video i had plans this summer to build my 6 x6 85 e150 this summer but that got screwed up bad February 1st but this build is giving me some good ideas thank you i cant wait to see the next video i love your channel!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello from Ukraine, you are my favorite channel, one of those who inspire. Only after watching your videos do, I feel like going to the garage and finishing my project. Wishing you inspiration and good luck.
It is absolutely turning into a really good looking off-road work rig and I agree with you it should be in always good working order and I'm sure it will be the best looking vehicle in the contest and team dirt lifestyle always has my vote
gonna be such a beast!!!!!!! Can't wait to see this finished, but enjoying the journey!!! Nate if there is anyone that can make this happen, you can brother!!!
Followed the channel for years. I love your builds, your meticulous nature, and the way you explain your ideas. I think I speak for a lot of us when i say, I hope you build this one how it should be built. Bring in a more manageable project for OnX. SAS swap something or trim body, and slap some tires on and have fun!
Keep the faith, Nate. I love what you're doing and what your vision is for this truck. Your competitors have some cool stuff in the works, but I love your project the best. Hang in there, please!
Your creativity and sound design/engineering is ahead of most from my perspective. (o-k fabricator and solid automotive engineer). That thought process and introspection is so much more valuable. Dont lose it or give it up! Anyone with two brain cells can throw money, tons and 43s ( no dig ) at a vehicle. Love your Lifestyle and respect what you have built with the family and the Farm, while trying to youtube. If you are ever in CO,AZ,UT,NM or make a BDR trail here, give a shout and I'll be there!
You're an inspiration and a model, I will back you whatever way you choose to go. My current struggle is to allow myself to deliver something that's 80% or 90% of what I know I can make, but in 50% or 60% of the time it would take to bring it to 100%. I find myself putting more projects out there this way and get to know what works or doesn't, what ideas where great and where I need to focus on the next iteration. Version 1.0 could be good, put on one heck of a show versus the other builders, and allow you to pour up a list of stuff to improve for yourself, after the challenge. Cheers from Quebec!
I just started watching your build and I enjoy all the detail info you bring to the channel, I enjoy the conversation due to the feelings and intelligence you display I will be watching the rest and I love the dually build as well
The shop and the build are looking awesome. One thing I'd offer up is to get sheetrock on the ceiling of the grinding room ASAP. Sparks flying off your wheels vertically will light up that plywood REAL quick.
All of your builds and videos are awesome. The J10 should be a staple of your brand, always around. IF the rules have changed mid competition, then the build should change mid competition. I don't think that anyone that follows your channel will be upset that you pivoted. More content!
Bro…thank you! Your words early in the video seemed like they were speaking DIRECTLY to ME! I’m working on my first build…and I’m at the point of designing the link suspension…and I’m paralyzed by newbie-itis. BUT…as you said, I think I know what I know…so that’s where I’m going to start…and I have finally resolved in my mind that it’s “OK” if I screw something up. It’s all in the name of learning! (And it’s all fun!) #FabricationIsFun
This is a great build but your are correct that if they wanted you to build an overlander but they have changed that then you should be able to change your vehicle to something that meets the challenge. Keep up the amazing builds sir.
This build is the reason I subscribed years ago and I am so excited! I trust your judgement on this one and I am so stoked to see it in Southern Utah in the near future! My dream build is something similar with a Jeep M715.
Nate. You made my sunday with this video. 😄 Keep up with the hard work! 💪 Because we are here watching. Doesn't matter if it's your barn or offroader just do your thing and make a video about it. 😅
Dude!! Stay true to your style!!! All out wheeler!!! The j10 is looking bad a"'':s!! Already!!! You feel I can do better!!! Hammer down!!Great video!!✌️
Hey man, I appreciate you building this jeep. I've got a 64 gladiator that I'm building and have used so many of your your ideas to plan everything out. Definitely hope to see you on the trail. Great content. I'm excited to see how you do the rear shocks.👍
Should have went with a parallel 4 bar and a Watts link. It takes a bit of extra work to package the watts link would definitely keep the axle centered through its full travel.
I considered this! The problem is I don't have the space. I want at least a 20 gallon fuel tank, and based on my measurements, I will have just over 20 gallons behind the axle as it sits.
Inflexible things break Nate. Things change and those who can't roll with the punches will be pushed by the wayside. I don't care what you take to ONX or if you even participate. The way I see it I'm lucky to be able to see builds like this and draw inspiration from your design. Maybe the information is out there but I wouldn't even know where to start looking for the pros and cons of three different suspension designs as you casually displayed in this video, with production quality rivaling anything Stacey David had✊🏻. I've learned a ton over the years, watching you since the BJ days started. You do you man, I ain't gonna judge. I'm gonna get back to fabbin' up the winch bumper on my old truck now, also heavily inspired by techniques I've learned on this channel. Have a killer day man, looking forward to the next one.
Another awesome build Nate! Life always gets harder when rules get changed…. Cummins dually wheelin is a blast, especially with granny low manual and an exhaust brake! Just remember though, you can only get in where you fit in…. Its no fun turning around on narrow trails. .. can’t wait to see how this thing turns out!
Awesome build! Wish I had a shop like this to just play and see what I could come up with. I think it would be kinda cool to memorialize your builds on the shop floor. Instead of topo maps, or topo vinyls, you could create a blueprint looking artwork.
New to your channel. I watch all the others on the onxoffroad build challenge as well. I love where you are going with this. I will love to see it finished for the challenge. I think it can be one of the best builds out there.
Your experience and dedication to quality work is inspiring. I would love to see the J10 compete, but its such a great truck that it doesnt deserve to be rushed. Im sure youd be more satisfied with a quality vehicle, and that satisfaction is sometimes what makes it worth it to begin with. If you dont think it would be reasonable to finish the J10 for the OnX challenge, I'll support your new project and continue learning from you as always. Good luck Nate!
You mid build and feeling down. But this is when you push and make it happen. Keep you head up and endure the challenge. I like the videos. Very informative
that swing effect is good helps keep the tires away from the frame. Claas Combines do this on purpose lets them keep a nice narrow road drivable axle while still having plenty of flex with out running the tires in to the frame.
I'm loving the truck, the creativity and vision on this are awesome. I think rather than rush it and destroy it in the competition, you should switch to something that may be a little less involved.
You know in your heart there's not enough time nor budget to make the tow truck right by october. Don't rush it or you won't be happy with it in the end.
Nate If you don't use this j10 for the offroad build it will be the second time this truck gets cast aside for who knows how long. The j10 does not deserve this. I was surprised you chose the J10 for the build. I see the build challenge as a thrash and trash build. Cobble up a bunch of vendor parts on a low budget and throw something together. To be honest it out of your wheelhouse. Lol. Even if you find another vehicle you won't be able to just throw it together. You are not plumed that way. Since you are committed to the build challenge and I'm sure you have a donor vehicle in mind let the J10 sit once again. It's day will come and it will be a great build. I think Rudy's drawing of his build sparked a new interest. Lets go old school El Camino trophy truck style. Can't wait to see what's next.
You see right through me 😎. I don't think I'm cut out for "build off" competitions, lol. Once I start the process, I realize I can't just cobble stuff together... So I think the J10 will get built alongside something else. This truck is special! And I need to treat it as such. Thank you for the positive comment, my friend 🙌
You need to concentrate on just the basics of it working as good as your talents have the time for. You don’t have to French the headlights. And you will make it. Great job. Great Video Nate
Nice work on that rear suspension Nate, really have to give it to you for trying two other designs before settling on the triangulated uppers. Your attention to these details is highly respected! No "that's good enough" to be seen.
The truck I always dreamed of was a Jeep Kaiser M715, ... The J10 is close enough, is like you're building dream... So from an ex-plumber to another , I would hate to see it half-done, don't compromise!
Might be a silly question but isn’t there going to be an issue with airing down the rear tires when they rub together because of the clearance between them?
That is something I'm going to play with when I do the beadlocks. They might need a small spacer but the beadlocks will pull the tires away from each other slightly, so we will see.
I wish I lived closer to you. I'm not a fabricator, but I could be just an extra pair of hands. I support you doing whatever you decide. I totally understanding not wanting to tear up the rig. Hell, grab the Sammi, slap a 20k paint job on it and run that. LOL
I think you can get this truck ready enough for the Onx challenge and finish it later. I imagine after you wheel it you will have some changes you want to make. I've seen enough of your videos that I think this is a good possibility. If you use the Onx challenge as a mid build test you will see what needs changing and you can fix it before you continue building it to be whatever the final version is going to be. I think it will be even better with some wheel time to iron out the kinks. The only thing that bugs me is that if you are over budget you are immediately disqualified. So if you can't do it in budget I think bringing in another rig is a good second option. Love the content.
My guy! Go find a cheap 2 Door Jeep Cherokee XJ for the competition! Build the baddest crawler around out of it! It could be super unique and different than everyone else's. Not to mention the absolutely bulletproof 4.0 online six and AW4 transmission!

Another great video. Always top shelf. Your music selection at 15 min is really good. More of this please. Cannot Thank you enough for the amazing content. Always love when a new video or yours drops. I watch it right away. You’re the man. Keep up the great work!
Awesome 🙌. I love it when people enjoy the music! I search for hours to find stuff I like
Hello from Ukraine, you are my favorite channel, one of those who inspire. Only after watching your videos do, I feel like going to the garage and finishing my project. Wishing you inspiration and good luck.
I really appreciate the explanations for everything you do, I'm learning a lot watching you build these rigs.
Thanks bro! I'm glad you are digging this style of video. Sometimes, I feel like I'm just rambling 😁
Love watching you build things that turn out to be so cool and they work. Keep on keeping on Nate.
Win lose or draw, it’s the quality and heart that you put into these builds that we love! That 80 series from the last challenge was perfect!
Great video as always mate. The little time lapse of bending the plate over the chassis was really cool too.
It is absolutely turning into a really good looking off-road work rig and I agree with you it should be in always good working order and I'm sure it will be the best looking vehicle in the contest and team dirt lifestyle always has my vote
Don’t give up Nate! You’re awesome and the build is epic!!!
That’s awesome, never compromise ur vision
gonna be such a beast!!!!!!! Can't wait to see this finished, but enjoying the journey!!! Nate if there is anyone that can make this happen, you can brother!!!
thank you for showing how the different rear suspensions work. It was very helpful to see the how the axle cycled with each type suspension.
Thank you very much for such high praise 👏. It means alot!
@@DirtLifestyle * Rock-lander route here in the southwest; not BDR
You're an inspiration and a model, I will back you whatever way you choose to go. My current struggle is to allow myself to deliver something that's 80% or 90% of what I know I can make, but in 50% or 60% of the time it would take to bring it to 100%. I find myself putting more projects out there this way and get to know what works or doesn't, what ideas where great and where I need to focus on the next iteration. Version 1.0 could be good, put on one heck of a show versus the other builders, and allow you to pour up a list of stuff to improve for yourself, after the challenge.
Cheers from Quebec!
I just started watching your build and I enjoy all the detail info you bring to the channel, I enjoy the conversation due to the feelings and intelligence you display I will be watching the rest and I love the dually build as well
Nate you have created the best automotive/fabrication/adventure channel on all of UA-cam!
The shop and the build are looking awesome. One thing I'd offer up is to get sheetrock on the ceiling of the grinding room ASAP. Sparks flying off your wheels vertically will light up that plywood REAL quick.
Oh, I love your vehicle and music taste! And the craftsmanship!
It is going to work great! One of the most successful off-road wreckers runs leaf springs, and they work well.
Please don't give up on this trick it's my favorite build!
Love the Jeep truck! Hang in there, you're making something great that you will enjoy for years to come.
All of your builds and videos are awesome. The J10 should be a staple of your brand, always around. IF the rules have changed mid competition, then the build should change mid competition. I don't think that anyone that follows your channel will be upset that you pivoted. More content!
This build may end up being one of my favorites you've done. Looking good!
Dang! That's high praise! I think we need to take the time to build this the right way. It's a pretty special truck.
@@DirtLifestyle yeah. Build it the right way. You’ve had it since the beginnings of your channel and it’s been sitting there waiting to be saved!
Nate, you are living your best life! Thanks
I'm trying!!! 😁
Awesome brother 😁. I'm glad to hear it!
Dude!! Stay true to your style!!! All out wheeler!!! The j10 is looking bad a"'':s!! Already!!! You feel I can do better!!! Hammer down!!Great video!!✌️
This build reminds me of dads old 1966 1ton dually jeep he had when I was growing up.
Love the Blues music at the end of Your video! Such is life Man!
if i wasnt so far away i would come help! its going to be a great truck like all your builds and cant wait to see it which ever way you decide to go!
The axle rear suspension and back half frame looks awesome.
Thank you!
Manual!? Lucky! If I pull the j10 out of the build challenge, it's definitely getting a manual transmission 😁
We did machinery install where I worked. We sprayed Aqua Net hairspray over our chalk lines to protect them. It cleans up with a wet mop.
Glad to have you back Nate
I love how you were willing to sacrifice time and steel to make it work right. even it you do it two or three times
Stick with the jeep truck, u got this dude!!
Yes Sir!!
love it! i am enjoying the process and thinking. strong work, mister!
Thanks man!
Awesome build! Wish I had a shop like this to just play and see what I could come up with.
I think it would be kinda cool to memorialize your builds on the shop floor. Instead of topo maps, or topo vinyls, you could create a blueprint looking artwork.
This is such a rad idea!
@@DirtLifestyle thanks!
New to your channel. I watch all the others on the onxoffroad build challenge as well. I love where you are going with this. I will love to see it finished for the challenge. I think it can be one of the best builds out there.
Nate, you rock, can't wait to see the Tacoma updates
Your experience and dedication to quality work is inspiring. I would love to see the J10 compete, but its such a great truck that it doesnt deserve to be rushed. Im sure youd be more satisfied with a quality vehicle, and that satisfaction is sometimes what makes it worth it to begin with. If you dont think it would be reasonable to finish the J10 for the OnX challenge, I'll support your new project and continue learning from you as always. Good luck Nate!
I think Rory made his own dually bead locks for trail mater.
Outstanding and awesome content as always. Thanks for sharing and taking us along
So freakin cool. Every man would want this truck
Doing great Nate! Keep your head up ⬆️ be watching everything you put out!
You know in your heart there's not enough time nor budget to make the tow truck right by october. Don't rush it or you won't be happy with it in the end.
Love your willingness to experiment.
Plumber-fitter tricks. Love it.
Love your vision, build is going to be sick!
The truck I always dreamed of was a Jeep Kaiser M715, ... The J10 is close enough, is like you're building dream...
So from an ex-plumber to another , I would hate to see it half-done, don't compromise!
Enjoying your builds
Dude! This looks Great, Can't wait to see it out on Trail! Keep up the Great Work!
Thank you! Me too!
Man i was in shock when you cut everything 😂😂😂😂
I wasn't expecting that either 😁! But it had to happen...
Might be a silly question but isn’t there going to be an issue with airing down the rear tires when they rub together because of the clearance between them?
That is something I'm going to play with when I do the beadlocks. They might need a small spacer but the beadlocks will pull the tires away from each other slightly, so we will see.
Cummins thru a 4:1 transfer case. Torque! As my driveshaft builder said about my 200:1 final ratio, that can turn steel into liquid!
Lol, I'm gonna steal this!
Going to be epic Nate 👍🏻🇺🇸
