  • I love when OM System pretends to be in business. They release "new" camera gear. The OM3, some updates to their 100-400mm and 17mm f1.8 and 25mm f1.8. They are still releasing old Olympus tech, so far we haven't actually seen anything new. Maybe one day? But it's fun to pretend to be a camera company.

Honestly, the OM-3 is my dream camera. OM-1 mii internals in a body that’s perfect for street photography…. Sign me up. Waaay faster readout speeds than the Nikon zf or fuji xt5 for less distortion when in electronic shutter mode and shooting fast moving objects… also way better build quality and weather sealing than fuji.
I like more depth of field in crop sensors m4/3 and I feel like I’m not handicapped to f8-f/11 like I am when shooting full frame.
Plus the lenses are way more interesting than being handicapped to the 40mm and 28mm vintage primes in the Nikon zf.

@@jeremiahmontana I get the frustrations around OM systems, but I agree. This wasn't a new flagship. It wasn't gonna be pushing 100% brand new tech. This is barely a 2 year old sensor at this point. And lens upgrades are just that, upgrades. Nobody is doing absolutely all new designs in all lens updates. I'm just hoping they quickly get on properly updating the entry level stuff. I skipped the om5 due to not having the new battery or usb c. Like, I don't need a large grip for my uses and even the grip on my em10 iv is sometimes in the way depending on the lens. I'm OK using the vintage style body with a little more wiggle room on how I choose to hold the thing. It's mostly clear that this type of camera just isn't designed for this particular streamer and his uses. But for me, this mix of features in a body this size, with the minor compromises made, I'm quite interested.

Well said! I remember when the Canon T90 was on the market. I purchased one and it was a new wow level for 35 mm. .. That was, I recall the mid-1980s... There is no question that the DSLR AND current SLR is something that was sci-fi back in the T90 days. When the iPhone was introduced overnight, once the average person understood the potential of the iPhone, consumer cameras dived. The Camera Pie is much more diminished today. The result ALL manufacturers are pulling rabbits out of their xxx. Some have legitimate merit. I am presently in the South West of the USA. I traveled here with an Olympus OM D 5 and a LUMIX T40. By all standards DINOSAURS!!
I am having minimal issues photographing venues. You need to work a little harder with w/M43.. but getting nice results.
In sum, if you are making your living in photography you need the equipment... Period! Therefore, an investment in new equipment that will help may be required. Therefore, don't get yourself chasing the new gear rat race!

In those days I don't think the word "ergonomics" was invented yet. When I used the film OM cameras I always attached a winder or motor drive to the body. If they put the contacts on the bottom of the camera, perhaps they could introduce a grip that appears like a winder but extends the controls out, with added battery capacity.

Ya but...I'm an OM-1 and A7CR shooter Looking to go smaller, (old, bad back and knees) and thought, hey this could be the one! but when I compare them, the OM-3 is taller and wider. only weighs 19gm less that the Sony. OK, the Sony is deeper by a good bit because, oh yeah, it has an actual grip!! Remember grips? Forget shooting anything comfortably that isn't a small prime. Even when you start comparing lenses, They aren't that different. OK, a little, but not a lot and that doesn't even take into account I can shoot smaller APS-C lenses if I choose, and still have more mp.
OK, I'm probably not the best person to comment, because, I don't give a crap about video, or classic film camera esthetics. I just want a great camera that is reasonable size that feels good in my hand and has logical and easy to reach controls.

Last I checked the sensor in the OM3 was released in 2022. That’s pretty new in the camera world.
And sure, the 100-400 has its issues, but it’s smaller than the 200-800 equivalent on Canon, and cheaper too, with weatherproofing, and now with a vastly superior synchronized stabilization system than the Canon lens. I’ll take all that for f/12.6 vs f9 on the Canon.
Personally I like the 75-300. It’s incredibly cheap, smaller and lighter than a can of Coke, and the only way to hit those focal lengths on Full Frame Canon is via an enormous third-party EF lens.
And let’s not forget the Zuiko macro lenses. The 60mm is dirt cheap, and the 90mm is an absolute beast. The only way to get a close modern equivalent on Canon is on an R7 with the RF100, which is a larger system, with less magnification anyways, at 2.24 on the Canon vs 4x on the Olympus.
The computational photography features have Canon beat as well. I have an R8 and am heavily considering selling it for an OM-3. I like a lighter camera. And personally, I find wide apertures and bokeh to be highly overrated. It’s not worth the considerably increased weight and cost just to achieve that effect. Plus, most lenses aren’t at their sharpest wide open anyways!
So I’ll gladly take an OM-1 or OM-3 with a 60 macro for versatility in product and portrait photography, with the 75-300 for travel and wildlife. And maybe another cheap lens at the wider end for landscape.
Is it lame that OM just “figured out” how to sync IS on the 100-400? Sure. Is it lame that the OM-5 is vastly handicapped by an older software system and connectivity, basically forcing you to buy their flagship to get those compute features and superior IS? You betcha. But find me a camera system that doesn’t have any faults. And don’t pretend that other camera makers aren’t just recycling old lenses either. Canon has been retrofitting plenty of EF lenses into RF, but with worse apertures.

    @JeffreyMcPheeters 4 години тому +7

I binge watched all the intros and live discussions yesterday so I could get it out of my system and today you brought me my favorite 'intro', especially the corporate discussion. Admission: I've been shooting OM System since 1974 without a break, and still have the original 1974 OM-1n on a little 80's plexiglass store display stand I bought from a going out of business camera store a couple years ago... so many camera stores going out of business; the few that are left.
Shooting both Sony (A7RV, recently sold - couldn't love the slow readout), and A1, bought used last year with 67 actuations for $3300) and OM mainly, mostly stills but doing more and more video now, I would like Sony to buy OM and hire you as Corporate Demigod of Perfection. I'm sure Sony could probably find a place for the umbrella guy.
Seriously, the OM-3 will either sell like hot cakes and the bean counters that are mostly OM System executives (the ones not cooks), will laugh all the way to the bank, or it will not. I'm actually guessing the former, because the latter would depend on consumers being especially intelligent. It's a pretty camera and does some photo centric stuff and video 'good enough' for tik tok so I'm guessing younger fashionistas will like it. It's retro and less complicated to operate compared to most mirrorless bodies, and easily within the pocket cash of people my early retirement age and older, so it may appeal to that growing set of age groups. We'll see.
I wish OM System would remember their original statements that they were going to finally get OM cameras up to seriously capable ability in video. Remember them saying that? I do. At the time, when I mostly shot stills for galleries and college sports and events clients, it made me a little nervous because I hardly did video on a hybrid camera. But now I could wish they had actually moved that direction and the OM-1 and OM-3 and even the OM-5, had added mostly cutting edge video features. (Of course, they'd have had to actually fixed continuous auto focus to what Sony has been providing for, what, 7-8 years?)
In OM's favor, some of the reasons I still prefer OM cameras over my Sony's or Nikons, for that matter (I shot Canon DSLR pro system/glass from 2005-2017 and gave up on them ever figuring out mirrorless..) are mainly to do with stuff OM never talks about; a lot of it is UI stuff they've had since the Four Thirds dslr era. Little things, but nonetheless, features that make the cameras much easier and quicker to switch into a settings configuration to handle completely unexpected situations, which is common in urban as well as wildlife scenarios. And the OM-3 is the first camera in awhile from that system that has separated out the movie, s&q, and stills in a way that can have multiple presets (custom settings) that can revert or hold individually, with custom buttons (half as many as the OM-1) that aren't limited as 'global' in the way Sony pretty much insists their custom buttons be, as well as other companies.
If they do hire you as a demigod of perfection... please insist, whatever company you work for, that the engineers be forced to master every other camera system that does anything better than the one you're overseeing, so they can humble themselves and learn something and maybe.... maybe they'll imagine what hasn't been done in a way that would change for the better. Maybe you could explain the very complex notion, apparently, that I don't need 120 fps of my grandson on a water slide but, gee, would it be too much to ask for 120p 4k coming down the slide with C-AF and eye detect? Is that a difficult concept to wrap an engineer's brain around? HD 240p with C-AF? sigh... phone does it.
The IPX stuff is out of my knowledge base, but I do have the experience is storms and extreme weather shooting to know that Olympus always took weather sealing to the extremes, compared with whatever Canon and Sony were saying was 'moisture resistant'. Similar to IBIS, in the weather sealing camp, there's Olympus and then there's everybody else. I figured out about 15 years ago that a non weather sealed Olympus camera and lens was about as weather sealed as my Canon 1D/5D mark whatevers. If you dropped it in 6 inches of water in a creek and immediately pulled it out, you probably ruined the camera and/or lens. I cover the Sony A1 and 200-600 in a downpour and carry the OM-1 and 300/4 or 40-150/2.8 out in the open no matter what. I've had accidents with the OM-D bodies where a tripod got knocked over or blown over in a gale into the waves at the shore or a shallow stream and just picked it out and continued on with never an issue. Seriously, it never occurred to me to even 'check to see if it was working' as I knew it was working fine. I've washed them off after shooting muddy bike races under warm running water, routinely. I've shot them half submerged (they don't recommend this) to shoot those shots where the water line is above the bottom of the lens. I even keep a couple of their dedicated flash units to use in outdoor misty or light rain showers because the Godox/Flashpoint gear I use for everything else isn't weather sealed. And none of this for just a few minutes. I've shot entire football games where it was raining off and on, with multiple cameras and lenses. (Yes, my gear is insured). So whatever they're doing, it's been good enough.
Maybe that's partly the reason they're still able to pretend they're a camera company. Now if they ever get C-AF to be as sticky as Sony or Canon R3/R5.... and 4k 120 in 10bit caf and 4k 240 10bit with eye detect... all I want....

People gets more picky and "intelligent" as the thing they're trying to buy gets more expensive (unless it's a luxury item to brag to others).
Would this sell like hot cakes at $2000? I really doubt it. I'm sure it'll have its fans; however, its direct competitors are not only cheaper right now, they offer way *way* more in the _"retro/analogue shooting experience"_ department. The only people who'll get this OM-3 are people who wants to larp as a classical street/documentary photogs but don't actually care how the shooting experience is practically the same as every other dime a dozen modern camera, if not worse because the ergonomics is bad.
A retro camera with pure specs (even then many scoffs at it just from the sensor size alone) as it's only real appeal just sounds very niche. Leica got the prestige and glass, Nikon lets you access nice features even while adapting vintage lenses, and Fuji lenses got aperture rings and "character" while on the extreme end their bodies have a hybrid viewfinder; plus they all got the retro dials.
Fuji took off because their cameras appeal to both the young fashionistas with their cheaper than FF good looking cameras, while also appealing to the hobbyist (old and young) who couldn't care less about modern camera features and just want to be able to shoot a camera like the old days (on the cheap!).
This OM-3 doesn't really seems all that appealing to either group. It has the specs of a wildlife/sports camera, but doesn't have any grip to account for the massive lenses, pros would think twice getting it considering it only have a single card slot; nobody is getting this unless this is their dream camera or have too much disposable income.

I do like the classic film version of the OM-3 look, and the solid metal feel of the body and controls. The lack of a grip makes it only practical with lighter/smaller lenses. A third party grip would have to provide an extended release button and controls. (Side note - when I shot with the film OM cameras - OM-1, 2, 4T with a similar form factor - I always kept the winder or motor drive attached just for the grip/release as I used longer lenses/zooms a lot in those days). I don't care for the lower res EVF 2.3 something mp. I think OM System was trying not to hurt the OM-1 sales too much - a lot of camera makers do that - they dumb down and strip some features from the lower end models to justify the higher priced models. Internally, the OM-3 has a lot of similarities to the OM-1 mki/ii. For a few benji's more, the OM-1 is a much better value. This camera might have the same following as with the Nikon Zfc - a fashion statement but not much more. For street photography and videography perhaps, it's okay. The other issue is the M4/3 size - size matters and it seems 20 MP native is all your getting out of these sensors.

They haven't released a single new optic, and no major new camera hardware since taking over Olympus.
By now, I genuinely believe that they're not even working on anything. You just don't get it. First, there actually are people who want a camera to take pictures and shooting video is a distant secondary concern; Panasonic is just the opposite, and that's OK. Second, the OM3 is a way for OM Systems to say that their cameras aren't just for wildlife photography, if you want a "serious" camera. The OM-1 had the internals to be an excellent all-around camera, but its bulk kept it from being an ideal "take anywhere" one. That small scale portability was always, and still is, micro 43's raison d'etre. Transferring the OM-1 sensor and processor to a smaller, lighter, and way more beautiful camera body was OM System's way to return to this less focused mission--not out of inability to do anything else, but out of intentional design.

    • @shira_yone
      @shira_yone Годину тому +1

Not just him, I don't get it either. They put a flagship internals into a retro _looking_ body... but not put any effort into making the handling retro whatsoever? They put a stacked CMOS in this... why? Why not just use the OM-5 internals and make it much more affordable, It's not going to be used for wildlife/sports anyway. This is hardly a "serious" carry around pro camera considering it only have a single card slot. Everything about this camera confuses me to no end.
On paper it sounds like they're just doing what Nikon did, but it's really not. 1. Nikon released 2 version, the Zf and Zfc. 2. They actually design a retro dial and put in features that helps the user when they adapts vintage lenses to the camera.
A Fuji X-T5 would be a way more sensible option to the majority of people looking for a retro camera over this OM-3. 40mp APSC sensor, lenses with aperture rings, retro dials, photocentric 3-way tilting screen, isn't any heavier nor that much bigger than the OM-3, not to mention that it is cheaper.

@@vampirolepis I also tried Fuji Instax, and honestly, it's a gimmick. The prints are not only smaller than the original Polaroid, but blurry, low contrast and basically look like they were taken with a toy camera. It still amazes me that Polaroid allegedly "lost the formula", and no one can recreate the quality film we had just 20 years ago. The only reason for this that makes sense to me is that they used some chemical that has since been found dangerous and banned (happened to certain paints, so plausible), so they can't market it anymore.

A lot of truth here in this video about OM System that many are too afraid to say! New sensor and lens "coatings", "additional ram" and what could have been a firmware update in the "new" products are only going to take you so far and upset your fanbase in the process!

Olympus is 1987 Tyson and OM is 2024 Tyson, same parts but can't keep up

This is harsh, harsh. Almost all of your complaints seem irrelevant to me and any way that I would want to use this camera. "How much does OM System hate video?" Probably about as much as I do. Why are you even looking at the OM-3 when you could be reviewing video cameras? Anyhow, as a photographer I like most of what I see in the OM-3. I'd rather a tilt screen on the back, but okay, that's debatable. What really hurts is the viewfinder, because 2013 called and wants its EVF back. If they used the EVF from the OM-1, I'd probably jump on that, but nope.

As an Olympus fan, I'm so disappointed in the OM system. I need more videos like this to heal my broken heart.

I was hoping for a full frame, not another MFT camera. Camera looks good, but maybe if they hire an 8th employee, they can do something new. Great video.

Yes, and they should consider hiring people full time.

Full frame. Me too, I’ll keep on dreaming. (It will never happen)

Whenever I take one of my OM film cameras out of the closet, I stare at them and keep asking myself why Olympus never made a FF digital line. I think if they did, they would still be around as "Olympus" and giving the other big four a run for their money. I know what they were trying to do but you can't enter the Indy 500 race with a 4 cylinder Chevy Chevette!
