This performance brings it all back
Never heard such a thoughtful sensitive and virtuosic performance.
Scintillating characterization and shifts of mood and dynamic
I could listen to Schiff playing Bach forever. It never gets tiring, worn out or cheap. It’s just.. what’s the word…scintillating
I thought I had discovered Bach when I heard Gould, but this man could have been the one to whisper in Gould's ear and be mistaken for the divine.

I'm actually in awe/love with his ornaments on the repeats.
I've never heard the Gavotte played this beautifully before!
To me the Gigue is the best. It’s so light, quick, and breezy. The way Mr. Schiff articulates and keeps the correct tempo is perfect. It is absolutely beautiful!
I think the gigue is the peak of the piece, which is probably why Bach put it as the last part.
@@mr6462 i certainly dont look to the #V for the gigue, more interested in courante allemande and of course gavotte
The sarabande loure bouree and gigue are their own kinds of songs apart from those 3 simpler more melodic ones
Anyway my point is gigue isnt supposed to be everyones favorite of the suite
For me the Sarabande, just so elegant and dark, with light coming through, very sophisticated. Exquisite work.
One of my favorite pieces by bach. I always think of a horse. Trying to learn this one! Egads.
Don’t you think Andras Schiff has the bench very low? Reminds me when Glenn Gould would play from a very low, small chair.
The look on Andras' face spells transcendence to me. Are we looking into the face of God? Yes Bach wrote it and he played it first but here we see the beauty of his legacy. How wondrous it would have been for Bach to channel his thoughts about relationships so unimpeded through to the score so that mere mortals like you and me could touch the divine if we played well enough. Cheers!
Woah
Gigue!! What a piece... It leaves me speechless, love it !
I like Bach's music! It is so beautiful! My favorite one from this French Suite No.5 in G Major is the Gavotte because it is tranquil and it was included in the artist Los Norte Americanos!
God he separates the voices so lightly NICELY all thw way in Gigue!
I cannot rest from travel: i will drink
Life to the lees: all times I enjoyed
Greatly, have suffered greatly, both with those
That loved me, and alone; on shore, and when
Through scudding drifts the rainy Hyades
Vexed the dim see. (Tennyson - Ulysses)
That saraband - you're floating in space traveling faster than light in slo-mo.
love the way he does all those ornaments.
I wonder what Bach would have thought/felt when he had put the final touches on such a miraculous composition.
This is the best interpretation I've heard of so far. It might be hard to hear, but Professor Schiff uses a very light pedal at some points. He did a great performance during the Gavotte with his Leggiero fingers :). He should be described as 'an immortal of music', if it makes sense. He played this piece as if it was nothing and showed how a hard piece could sound easy in the hands of a genius.
minidragon L didn't he say he doesn't use pedal though?
Aeio Music sometimes pedal is used when you feel it needs to, just like when I have to play legato in jumps. Professor Schiff uses a tiny bit of pedal which makes the sound a bit more sustained and transferred to the end to the end of the hall.
It's not true as far as i know, he said that he never uses pedals on Bach. I don't know how does work a string piano, but maybe it's the vibrato of the harpsichord.
@@aeiomusic He definitely uses some, just differently than in something like a Beethoven sonata
Don’t call him a music god
You revive Bach. Thank you
don't understand dislikers
Not my favorite performances of some of the individual dances, but nothing but awe and respect for a guy who can play the entirety of the French Suites 1-6 from memory and not make a single mistake, not that I could tell. Just. Incredible.
Forgive me for saying but your obviously aren’t familiar with this great maestro. He just doesn’t play the French Suites by memory, but all of the Bach repertoire plus an infinity of other repertoire. Get yourself educated before you make glib comments. Schiff is one of THE masters of JS Bach.
@@kangchenjunga591 Will all due respect they aren’t saying anything bad. They just said it wasn’t their favourite performance. They commented that he was “incredible”. Maybe you should learn how to read before talking about someone else’s education? You also mentioned he knew “all his repertoires” Bach has written over 1,000 pieces of music (not all for keyboards). Which includes 2 books of prelude and fugues (24 in each book), fantasies, and toccatas. As amazing this guy is its not very likely for him to remember all.
@@kangchenjunga591 this was such an unnecessary comment.
He also played the French overture partita plus the Italian concerto as encore pieces also from memory.
True, he played 1-6 ALL AT ONE GO
He is one of my favorite pianists of all time!
András Schiff is possibly one of the best Bach interpreters of modern times. His leggiero fingers in the Gavotte and the Gigue make him an immortal Bach player. András has made the Gigue, a very difficult Bach piece, sound easy. And the Gavotte, a piece that is hard to satisfy one person with, is done really well in the hands of this genius.
The best pianist Bach interpreters*
And murray perahia...
Schiff, Angela Hewitt and Murray Perahia are level pegging for me for Bach on the piano. You can really feel the dance here: awesome. The bringing out of the different voices of the counterpoint is perfect too.
And Perahia brings the “blessedness”
And gould
When I closed my eyes I saw I'm in Baroque period at J.S.Bach's home and Bach was playing this
Yeah, if only Bach had access to a piano :/
Josh L. ABC He did, just not a piano the way we know it and not at the time he wrote this.
@@makytondr8607 no, he used a harpsichord or organ, but not a piano
What I know is that during Bach’s life first pianos were horrible. Most composers rejected them. Even Haydn’s and Mozart’s early keyboard compositions were for harpsichord or clavichord not for piano.

The best music in the World thanks to Der Thomaskantor Bach and Andras who performed it divine. Its really an antidepressiva in these coronavirus times.
The bass tones on that piano are beautiful. It's also nice to hear this played in a slightly more relaxed way. The tendency is to push this piece quite fast.

I'm so ashamed of this comment section here. I bet mr. Schiff is comfortably in top 3 of the best Bach piano performers, since I don't know anyone who played Bach better - but as I didn't know many Bach players, I wouldn't argue. Mr. Schiff does, what's one of the most important things when playing Bach, piano/harpsichord/organ, doesn't matter, you should articulate. You might call it non-legato, but that's just halfway correct, articulation goes much deeper. Many players just ignore it or play full legato, which tears my ears. What is worse, I thought at least organists should know what to do, when playing Bach, because Bach to organ is like Beethoven/Chopin/Rachmaninov to piano. Well no, organists are either lazy or stupid, I don't know, 90% of them also play Bach in legato, which makes almost every piece he composed boring. From enjoyable to dull in matters of seconds.
Mr. Schiff is different - in my opinion, I would crown him without hesitation as current top Bach/Haydn performer in the world. So please shut up all haters - either you grew up listening Bach played legato, or you just have no taste in Bach music - I'm not saying I have, but this is rational, objective, articulation is correct, he does it, he does it great, he's great, end of story. Rather think if there is any other pianist in the world capable of playing it in such a delightful way.
So true
he is the best living bachist i think.............and only 2nd to richter (the best) and gould imho
I love his playing in Bach, he is like Bach in 21th century

No one else can play Bach as clear as Andras Schiff can.
Ágnes Albert gould
But without Gould's foreign eccentricities, thus much closer to Bach's essence.
Schiff revered Gould: "he was one of my childhood idols ...a revelation to me ...for me nobody could play polyphony like Gould, he could control five voices more intelligently than most others can control two". Gould's work was revolutionary, everyone else who followed worked in his footsteps, something which Schiff well knew and would hardly have contested. This is an outstanding interpretation of the work, but you can be an exceptional Beethoven player without being Artur Schnabel, an inspired Chopin interpreter without being Dinu Lipatti. But legends are legends, the energy and clarity Gould brought to Bach are incomparable..
We all know that. Gould is a genius but his Bach has as much Gould (if not more) in it as it does Bach. Schiff's interpretations are not only immaculately clear but also sensible to the pieces' essence, humor and context.
I would say that both Gould and Schiff are great masters. They both have different ways of interpreting a piece and have different technique. But they can both play Bach clearly and show the emotion of the piece. How I wish that I can play like them....

OMG the best Bach I’ve heard O_o For ABRSM G8 students: go to 12:52, Gigue.
I have been a "fan" of Mr Schiff since he first appeared on the London stage over 40 years ago, and own several of his recordings. I can a recall a QEH recital of his around 1980 that was barely a quarter full and, incredible as it may seem now, interspersed with hecklers, a very rare sight at a South Bank concert. It is reassuring that Mr Schiffs' own unique style of phrasing and embellishment has since caught on; his technical mastery has seldom been cast into doubt. This recording vividly demonstrates the liberties he is inclined to take with the printed score to great effect; the music is, I believe, served by his approach and listeners familiar with many versions of this suite may rest assured that, on this particular day in Leipzig, Mr Schiff played delightfully well. Long may he continue.
I am playing this suite and my piano teacher told me to copy the Sarabande EXACTLY. Now my head hurts from all the ornamentation.
lol I'm playing this for my exam next week my head hurts too -_- plz wish me luck :) and good luck with copying it down :D
I guess he didn't want me getting too many wacky ideas. Anyway, I won third in the Utah Music Teachers National Association, so all is well. I'm so unlucky because I was 11 when I won and I couldn't go on to nationals because of a bunch of 14 year olds.
Lol I know, and I wish I could have my own way of playing the Sarabande. Unfortunately, he says that I always mess it up when I do it because I can never remember the places where I add ornamentation.
Elizabeth Zhang No need to copy
I know it has been past a while from your comment but teachers who tell their students to copy others playing are not a good teachers. I would recommend you to move to another teacher.

7:13 I've never heard this before...
Bach wrote two endings for the sarabande! Some pianists, such as Schiff and Perahia play them both
Incredible. Such beauty.
It is very rightful to say: this music is the joy of the soul.
Wonderful interpretation.
I have listened many times and always find his style unique
May I pass along an observation? I'm only looking at the Allemande. Both parts are of course in 4/4 time. There are sixteenth notes, eighth notes, and quarter notes, as well as dotted notes. But the basic step between fingers and hands is always a sixteenth note. So if you count as I do with eighth notes (1-and-2-and-3-and-4-and-1 . . .), then you can two notes for every count through the entire piece. I find this simplifies learning this piece. I also find with enough practice I drop counting eighth notes and count quarter notes instead (1-2-3-4).
Wonderful piece....

Great Andras Schiff
Such a beautiful inspiration! I've been playing the piano as my second instrument after flute for about one and half years now. My teacher gave this to me and I needed some tempo/pedal inspirstion. So smooth!
This after a year and a half seems very impressive! I've been playing for about the same time and I've been learning a bit of the second invention and I find it really challenging. Though I'm self taught and not a very good sight reader. Good luck to you either way!
Dear fellow pianists, please take note, all Bach-lovers and Andras Schiff admirers including myself, that this Bach French Suite No. 5 in G Major, and all other keyboard works of Bach, and every other great composer for the keyboard (whether for the spinet, clavichord, harpsichord, piano, organ, etc.) call this and other works, a "piece" not a "song" unless stipulated as such by a composer like Mendelssohn in which he composed piano pieces which he named "Songs Without Words". Otherwise, a song is a vocal work normally accompanied by a piano or other keyboard instrument, or by guitar, or by an orchestral, band, or other chamber ensemble whether small or large.
note to self: 12:51
There is a sublime recording of this piece by Wilhelm Kempff that I believe outclasses Schiff in the way it brings out the uniquely lyrical character and overall arch of this marvelous piece. That said, there is much to learn here, especially in the emphasis given to the bass line. I find some of the ornamentation distracting, but in general this is pianism of the very highest order. Whether or not it is true to Bach immediately raises the issue of the use of a modern concert grand to play his keyboard pieces. Schiff is admirable in his chisel-like clarity, in his self-restraint (particularly, in regard to the (non) use of the pedal), and in his abjuring of all but the subtlest rubato. Easing up a bit on these strictures gives you a different, perhaps less "authentic" reading, but one that yields up other pleasures. Is Schiff more Bachian than Kempff or, at the other extreme, Gould -- or even Richter? Or of the several great harpsichord performances? I prefer not to hold a position and to listen to the approaches of all these masters for the diverse pleasures they yield.
I listened to it, not really famous, since it only had 228 views, but it was okay. Nevertheless it wasn't as good as this. The fluctation in tempo was just too big for my taste. Really quick at first and becoming kinda slow later on
Tom pls no negative

He goes pretty fast and there aren't many dynamics... Maybe that's just how Bach's music is. I suppose he didn't have the ability to use dynamics (he played a harpsichord), but sometimes I feel like, since we have the gift of dynamics, a painoforte, we should have some...
