  • A collection of old photos from in and around Harlesden & Willesden, mixed with their current view - or as near as I could get on Google Streets. I've made similar videos for St Albans where I live now, and I thought it would be good to do one for Harlesden & Willesden, where I grew up, so here it is.
I've also done them for Radlett, Knebworth and Caister-on-Sea. You can see them all on this UA-cam channel.

Great video. Harlesden looked so much more interesting back then. Craven Park especially.

For some reason the buildings all look smaller now. Don't know why - maybe we have got used to tower blocks?

I grew up in Cricklewood. There were trams when I was a young boy (1956) and a cinema on Cricklewood Lane, called the Gaumont, where you could watch Ronald Reagen as a B movie cowboy, on Saturday matinees. There was the Galtimore Irish Dance Hall, where the biddies stood on one side and themen on the other. Nelson's Snpook rooms, wherevponce Desmond Decker played. T^here was much more greenery and wildlife. Sparrows and Pigeons were everywhere and where Brent Cross was, and the surrounding areas, was green and lush land. The railways were steam engines.

Happy Times when people we're people, good morning old chap, look after your neighbours, always be polite, no TV, no Internet, PlayStation, mobile phones,
These days you got everything , don't know your neighbours, say good morning to someone, they tell you to f**k off, would love to live in those times. Just to see what it was like. Thanks for the video's...

I need to stop posting but I had NO IDEA about the willesden hippodrome (though gutted it wasn't called the Harlesden Hippodrome since it's in Harlesden). Looked so much better than the Job Centre. I live one road over from there. Honestly that whole street could really be something special like Ocean Drive in Miami and I suspect in the future it will be, especially after the old oak common revamp.

Go back the same amount of years relating to the older photos and I guess all was very rural.

Craven Park Rd looked much nicer back then. I hate those wimpey houses now. All Souls Parish Church bit (Nicholl Rd) looks nicer now, though. It's still a nice road (if you go back on yourself) near Our Lady of Willesden etc.

I’ve lived in the area since 1967, lovely place back then, prefabs, Roundwood Park, Brent Show, Jubilee Clock, M&S, Boots where the shoe shop is now, Wollies, Wimpy by KFC. There was a girls school on Park Parade by the roundabout now flats. The old Vauxhall dealer Scotch Corner with car wash. Good old memories, the nursery by the church up from Jubilee clock is still there that I went to. I remember the toy shop by the clock aswell, Toy Cave or `toy Centre it was called.
The place is an absolute dump now sad to say. I don’t even walk along there now as nothing there for me, just rubbish shops, total dross claiming benefits hanging around, the stink of cannabis everywhere, what a shame, very sad really. So far now grief all my time here but it’s dangerous now NW10 !

It was never the best area, but I had a good childhood there. I left in the 90s. Sadly, as you say, it has certainly gone downhill. On the very rare occasions I visit now, I am happy to be leaving. I remember the Toy Centre, and my sister's first job was at Scott's Corner Garage. We spent a lot of time in Roundwood Park too.

A lot of what makes the modern day look unattractive is transport. Cars are simply ugly past the 50s. Trams and bicycles will always look better as will black and white/sepia pictures. I also think shop signs looked much better back then. Now they're an eyesore. Really both Harlesden and Willesden need a quality control person to say 'this is going to be our aesthetic and you need to comply with your shop signs'.
