Yeah, I don't know where my ideas come from. Therefore I can't tell someone else where they come from. I guess they come from the monster inside or something. It works and keeps coming and I just go along for the ride while trying to take notes along the way.
Stephen once said that as a writer, none of your story telling is effective if you are not able to create a relationship between you and the characters. He helps you to get into their heads and they in turn get into your head. He has mastered this method.
Not always... There have been times where I have an idea on how to fix an issue in my book or a way a scene could play out differently than I planned...and too many times I'll forget the specifics.
Surely he doesn't mean notebook to jot down ideas really fast or to remember information might forget later? I would love to know what he means by a "writers notebook."
#10 is so right. Some of the greatest stories are completely universal across cultures. I recently realized this while watching Back to the Future, which can work for any age, any culture, any gender.

I loved that he said he would write books, even if he didn't get money, but he liked writing for money! All throughout the ten points, "#1 Love what you do," and "#3 Love the process," ring loudly that as a writer, one must really love writing. #9 stands out also "Pass something on. "Love the process." Of course King is talking specifically about the writing process. However, I believe this can be a great rule to consider for all career paths. It is very much like "Love what you do," and "Find your creative process." All great advice for any career. Superb advice for writers who may not yet know why they are writing. If you don't love it, and if you don't love the writing process, you should probably consider a different path/hobby.
Toby Reynolds why would you write unless you love it? It's not like some work in a corporate merely to make steady money out of security fears... it's writing.. if you don't love it you will fail, and if in any other path if you the only reason to love it is because you are doing it then that's some lame of a reason is it not ? Lame satisfaction in life by consequence !
I listen to Stephen King every few months. He inspires me and reminds of why I write my stories. Thanks for putting this compilation together. Always #LOVE your work, Evan!
For me it's a combination out of "don't be that miserable artist" and "enjoy the process". It can be overwhelming sometimes to make progress on your passions while maintaining a life on the side. But it's important to stay positive, and always remember to enjoy the process instead of dwindling down into a spiral of shame over "not enough progress". Thanks for the video! :)

If there is only one thing I can say about Stephen King is that he raised a lot, I mean a LOT of people to love reading. He inspired me to read and I passed this to my kids. Thanks Steph we owe you one.
King has inspired both me and people around the world. For me, horror is the main subject matter of which I love to take something so normal, so inoccent, and turn it into a very sinister, abnormal demon. I’ve been inspired by King when I first heard about him when I was 6, and began with stapling little pieces of paper and writing. Now, I am 12, and looking into publishing a fully complete novel. Thank you, King, for all this inspiration and kindness you’ve left me in, I appreciate you.

Stephen king is my hero. I have over 50 of his books on my shelf and I’m writing my own book currently. I inherited them all from my nana and just like something from one of his books, she read them on her deathbed.
Thank you for making this video and all the Top Ten Rules vids. They are so inspiring. #4 & #5 really resonated with me. I think what he is really saying is Just Do the Work. Love it, have fun, and leave your worries behind. Also, I love speech he gives near the end of the vid. "Everything's on loan anyway." It reminds me to let go and just flow.
I enjoy writing more than almost anything. I mean, there's nothing like it. I was born to write. Not saying that what I write is any good, unfortunately! You can love something and not be good at it. I keep working at it year after year-- I obviously don't write for money--but it'd be nice to be paid for doing what I love because then I wouldn't have to do some stupid boring job that I hate. I could write all morning, have an adventure in the afternoon, come back and read or write in the evening. That would be my ideal life (basically what I did when I stayed in New York for 3 weeks). But if my writing isn't good enough despite all the classes and many thousands of words, I suppose I'll just have to keep writing for nothing. I really can't stop writing, can't stop the ideas, it's just a part of me, I wouldn't want to give up that part of me. Especially not for some dumb job. I wish I could at least do something I'd like to write about, or at the very least something that didn't make me so tired I didn't have any energy in the evening to write no matter how much I'd want it, and just watch TV shows. But I've got to live somehow, can't keep living in my parents' house. I've got an ultimatum for this fall, I've got to move out even if I have to do a horrible temp job like the kind that I did before, just data entry or scanning, the same thing all day, mind-numbing, drains you of all creative energy--my I don't want to live that life! There's got to be something better. I have a poli sci degree but it's been several years since I graduated and haven't had a full time job since. I have a pet sitting business, but it doesn't give me enough $$. I've been writing but only self-published and a couple short stories published out of all that I've written. So now the time is up and I've got to do something --I want it to be ok at least so I can keep writing for fun in the evenings.....if anyone will take me besides Wal-Mart. ohhh I don't want to go back to those temp jobs, contrary to what you might think their mindlessness doesn't leave you lots of room to imagine, you have to focus on your task just enough so it takes all the ability to imagine out of you and all you can do when you get home is watch Doctor Who......I want a good life for myself--who wouldn't--? but perhaps I'm too idealist. I have to be practical, realize that I have no talent in much of anything, even the thing that I've been doing all my life (writing)..... Oh my sorry for all this I'm just panicking a little from my ultimatum but I absolutely MUST have my own place, can't stay THAT much of a loser....I will try mom's great patience at some point and she'll throw me out before I'm able to take my cat..... ahh I do sound like a loser...so what it's youtube I don't even know... Well, I have to get back to writing while I can. (who'd even want to read something from someone like me!!!!)
I read it. :) I think you are a very good writer, based on what I am able to discern on your post. Don't give up...pursue what you love, #Believe in yourself. Yes, there's got to be something better, although you might need to work on something you don't like for now, find time to explore and do things that makes you feel alive. Always #Believe and take action. All the best to your writing Eowynnofrohan! #BTA178 Shine
Thanks Evan! sometimes one needs encouragement. I can't help but write so something may get somewhere someday...I at least want to do something I don't hate--there has to be something besides writing that I can do that AT LEAST doesn't stifle my creativity by being mind-numbingly boring. I NEED something to occupy my mind. Something intellectual....
I've probably seen all of the videos these clips came from. Some a few times. This is definitely some of the best of the best of them. Thanks for putting this together!
The process of the ten you've posted that resonated most with me is "be yourself." I speak one way and can't seem to get the words on paper in the same way. I'm so concerned with tense and grammar I get discombobulated. I like how he says to go for broke when you're writing. As Jim Carrey said, sure, he has two Golden Globe Awards, but when the world ends none of that matters. Both of these men started off with nothing and earned penny they own. Spectacular deities of success.
I've been READING & WRITING all my life. Never thinking my work good enough. After seing this...I'm gonna pull some stuff out, polish it up and SEND IT OUT... the fat that you get rejected is just part of writing and damn it...I'M A WRITER who just wants to share my stories....Thanks for this... gave me the BUMP I needed.

When I started writing seriously in the 80s, I said that I wanted to write a story before I turned 30 so frightening that it would scare Stephen King. I picked 30 because he published Carrie before he turned 30. That didn't happen. I didn't even sell a story until I turned 35, but he was one of the inspirations that got me started (Ray Bradbury and Edgar Allen Poe part of it too). I like his description of his writing process best of his 10 tips offered here. That matches how writing feels for me too. I don't know how the folks who plot everything ahead of time can do it. Thanks for posting this.
4. The good ideas stay with you. I've never looked at it from that perspective. But I think that's going to be great with new strong and less strong ideas.
LOVE what you do!!!! Love it! Exactly. If an 'author' is writing books just to up their reputation and the characters become a means to an end, then find something/ ANYTHING else to do.
Yo - You don't know me and I don't know you but thanks for putting up all these Top 10 writer videos. They have been a great help in keeping my suicidal thoughts away while my own books on the Kindle are crashing and burning.
Hello! One year later, hope you are still alive :/ I do agree, this advice is Golden. I particularly uphold the advise on perfecting a work until the author is personally satisfied as well as the passage of time being the greatest filter for a collection of ideas. So, out of curiosity... Are you an author? Or did you mean books you had been reading were crashing? Sorry, silly question. Just couldn't interpret 📖.

I love #5. Even bad concepts have good ideas within them often. Stow them away in the attic for later. Move on to the next concept that isn't a good idea either. Then one morning, before you're awake, your crazy brain will fit the different bricks of lost ideas together into something really cool. But you have to wait till after you've had your coffee to know if it is actually a good idea.
lol...Each time I see an interview with King, it's instant: "I can have a beer with this cat, or even watch a couple of games. Such an engaging personality.
"An author's notebook is the best way to immortalize bad ideas." that's kinda true but not very practical, because, when i have a good idea, i keep thinking about and i don't come up with new ones unless i write it down, then i can assure myself that i won't lose it so many other ideas come and go and when another good one comes up i just write it down so i feel safe

Glad you they inspired you. :) Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts and for watching. #BTA178 Shine
AWESOME! The Carrie "bit"...perfect close!
Thanks for sharing and thank you for watching :) #BTA961 Luka
We all need encouragement Eowynnofrohan. :) All the best to you finding that something. Don't forget to explore. #Believe. #BTA179 Shine
tldr -_- (edit)=(just read it. i'll tell you something in my next post)
Keep at it! A writer writes. Bottom line.
I've probably seen all of the videos these clips came from. Some a few times. This is definitely some of the best of the best of them. Thanks for putting this together!
Glad you like it! Thank you for sharing with us, and thanks for watching. :) #BTA157 Luka
He is so intelligent every time i watch Green mile or shawshank i just admire how much he knows about people he is so intelligent
Agreed :) #BTA1314 Luka
That was awesome, thanks! I agree that you have to be yourself and love the process. I agree with everything, but those are my favorites.
Yes, it's important to be yourself and love the process. Thanks for the appreciation and for watching. :) #Believe #BTA430 Shine
I was at GW for the talk in #10. What an awesome experience!
Cool to know that DarkCellar. Thanks for sharing. :) #BTA423 Shine
Thank you for sharing with us, and thank you for watching! :) #BTA148 Luka
lol I remember the Wood Chuck scene in Under the Dome. He desicribes the thoughts going on in the woodchucks head. I love the way he does that.
Press B To Crouch Agreed. I just love how Stephen King can so beautifully and spectacularly craft a scene and create atmosphere.
Love Stephen King, his a talented, humble, wise man.Wow,great.
+Dinorah Henriquez Very well said. :) Thank you for watching! #BTA111 Luka
I watch this in awe. Because when I was 10 I wrote a book report on Christine and got sent to therapy by my school
much love Edward 💛 #Believe - Feb (from Evan’s team)
9:05 I think he would be a great villain for one of his books, just look at that expression and the way he said it lol
Thanks for sharing and thank you for watching :) #BTA973 Luka
King inspired me to be an author. His work is remarkable.
Keep it going :) #BTA1387 Veljko
What resonated with me was when he stated to not worry about what your audience will like, write about what you enjoy.
Awesome to know it resonated with you Michelle. :) Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching. #BelieveNation #BTA353 Shine
I love him, he's such a romantic, like me. I always eat the cake before I eat the frosting. ^_~

You're welcome, thanks for sharing your thoughts too. 😊 #Believe - Feb
Please make one for Paul Rodriguez aka P-rod! Thanks!

Glad you liked it, thanks for watching #Believe :) #BTA1560 Veljko
I adore this man and hope to write with him one day.
4. The good ideas stay with you. I've never looked at it from that perspective. But I think that's going to be great with new strong and less strong ideas.
Thank you for the comment and for watching! #BTA160 Shine
LOVE what you do!!!! Love it! Exactly. If an 'author' is writing books just to up their reputation and the characters become a means to an end, then find something/ ANYTHING else to do.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and for watching. 💛😊 #Believe - Dondon
Thank you for all the great content:-)
+Ian Carter Glad you like it :) Thank you for watching!!

Yo - You don't know me and I don't know you but thanks for putting up all these Top 10 writer videos. They have been a great help in keeping my suicidal thoughts away while my own books on the Kindle are crashing and burning.
Hello!
One year later, hope you are still alive :/
I do agree, this advice is Golden.
Great collection of SK's jewels of wisdom. #1 is the best.
Thanks for the comment and for watching John. :) #Believe #BTA478 Shine
Your content is awesome, Evan.
Thanks for this. Been a fan of King since I was a kid. I would recommend also Danse Macabre, one of his books about writing.

Everything creative is a love/hate process.
Thank you for sharing :) #BTA798 Luka
Great composite of Stephen King. Loved it! Good job!
Glad you loved it lynda. :) Thanks for watching and for the appreciation. #Believe #BTA541 Shine
I always love it when he gets them bright big eyes. LOL It fits hit "horror writer" persona well. :)
Lol. Thank you for watching! :) #BTA386 Luka
lol...Each time I see an interview with King, it's instant: "I can have a beer with this cat, or even watch a couple of games. Such an engaging personality.
lol 😅 #Believe - Feb
#4 yes !!!! That's how I feel & those are the ones I'm going after! #sisepuede
Cool! :) All the best! Always #Believe in yourself and keep taking action to achieve your goals. #BTA667 Shine
Thanks for sharing your thoughts #Believe :) #BTA1582 Veljko
love your page and it's very inspiring. keep going. very cool.

I loved the film adaptation of ‘Dolores Claiborne’. Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judy Parfitt were all great and the setting was beautiful. I think Kathy Bates is Mr. King’s homegirl.
