- I finally got around to transforming my 12 Gauge Single Shot Shotgun into a Survival Shotgun by adding a Choate Store-End, Survivor Stock, and a couple of other goodies. I learned about this from Dave Canterbury about 8 years ago but I still think it is a good idea today.
Here's are the parts I could find on Amazon-
HiViz Snap On Shotgun Sights: amzn.to/3ck6nYl
Slip On Shotgun Shell Holder: amzn.to/2yIlFs1
Ultimate Sling; amzn.to/3ddsSiL

Survival is Not an Accident!
Be Prepared
My papa told me many year's ago that a 12 ga shotgun is the most versatile firearm there is.
Only as versatile as the user
When I was a kid, my dad had an over and under shotgun. It was a 22 on top, and 12 gauge on bottom. That combination is definitely an excellent survival shotgun. The upgrade looks cool.
Likely a Savage. They still make a modern version of it.
@@Jonahch2v9 there used to be a number of manufacturers/importers that made combos. They are a lost art and it is a shame. USSG, Rossi, savage, baikal, etc....I have always wanted a couple of them but they are so hard to find these days.
@@stuckgrenadepin.225 I believe the combos are still made in Europe but cost many bucks.
@@dennishein2812 they are. There are a couple places that import them but it is rare to see one available.
hunting with a single shot is pure joy !
Well Dave Canterbery now recommends the Stevens Model 301 because its far superior.
It Has a safety, improved the forearm release, and screw in chokes.
Even during the ammo shortage, 12ga shot-shells were available at most stores here in North Texas.
Klawock Kidd
here in the Houston area as well
Black powder also seems to never be in short supply. Good thing about single-shot shotguns is that you can muzzleload with them if necessary and kill anything from squirrel to deer depending on what type of shot you use.
Same in Oklahoma City
Shotguns aren't historically affected by gun scares.
UA-cam is getting stupid with these rules.
@KA- BOOM!!! Crossbow because you can made you own bolts or arrows
I've picked a couple of old 12 gauges that were practically falling apart. This is a neat idea to actually make them useful.
Neat project. Who would have thought a single shot could be that tactical. Are you going to cut the barrel? I had a bunch of single shot Savage shotguns but I gave most of them to grand nieces and nephews to teach them to shoot. With that lightweight stock I will bet that a 20 gauge would be a bit more enjoyable. Everybody knows that the only thing more reliable than a single shot is a sharp stick!
Cut the barrel? Nope.
I did almost the exact same build about a year ago. I put a .22, .410, and a 9mm adapter in mine. The only thing I need is a ramrod to help get the adapters out. Sometimes they are a pain. Great video Brian!
Thanks
I really like that u didn't cut down the barrel . It looked good with the mods. One other thing I would of like to see was screw in chokes installed
I really like the large boxy butstock for storage. And the foreend. All really nice set up
Nice project!! I have the 357 barrel for my NEF shotgun, makes for a very versatile survival tool.
Love The Mod's On The Ole' Scatter Gun, Bryan ! Have A Swell Weekend. ATB T God Bless
I modified a Hatfield 20g, it'll fold in half. Cut the barrel down to 19". Very back packable.
Love the Chuck jokes :) nice job Brian and great plug for Dave he has an awesome channel also. Enjoy your weekend.
Dave Canterbury's 21st Century Longhunter series is among my favorite of all time. Watching it all those years ago really got me into black powder. Upon following his recommendations, I bought a 209 primer muzzleloading conversion from Short Lane Arms for my Single Shot Shotgun. It's very versatile. With it I can kill anything from small game and game birds using bird shot or regular walmart .177 bb's, to deer using buckshot, slinshot ammo and lead roundball. Another plus is that black powder seems to never be in short supply around my area.
That's a great series.
Dave's entire channel
@@SurvivalOnPurpose yessir!
@@SurvivalOnPurpose Dave has a great channel. He's the guy that got me into woodcraft and wilderness living.
I like your mods as they are almost Identical to what I did to my ATI single shot 12 gauge with the 19.5" break over barrel, which incidentally came with stock storage, and only cost me $99 plus tax at my local pawn shop. You got about $250 in yours, and I got $140 in mine, having picked up a used sling and butt pad for $5 each at the same pawn shop. And mine will fit in a backpack without diassembling.
Mine is cut to 18" installed a old style poly choke ( no tubes to lose) rifle sights for slugs sling swivels. Stock shell holder. Stock is hollow to hold stuff like caliber adapters
One cautionary statement, what kind whybut first, love your options chosen; now that you have a lighter plastic/ polymer stock, it’s going to kick harder most likely, you may look at a shoulder pad depending on loads you intend for use..... just a thought.
I removed mine for that reason, I am not not partial to it, just couldn’t find that sweet spot to tuck it in on my shoulder. Some loads caused it to kick like I imagine getting kicked in the chest by a bucking bronco might feel!!!!
I’ve got one of those. It’s right beside me in my tv room. I had one of those elastic ammo sleeves on it too. Over time the elastic breaks down and they flop around and the shells fall out.
Get one made from leather or nylon. You can also get a metal or plastic sidesaddle for a pump gun and and attach it on the side of the stock with a couple screws.
I don't know how old your video is but I bought one just the other day at Walmart for 688. That's the little shell holder that goes on the stock
cool
Damn I came here to see what could i do to upgrade my old shotgun but seems I'll only have to buy the shells holder, great video!
BTW, WalM or maybe Gander Mountain has a Pardner pump SG on sale often for $167 and a Savage pistol grip pump for around $180.
Regular price on those are under $200 where I live.
Pretty good guns for that price.
Palmetto has a 20 gauge for $120, so maybe 160 shipped, would 20 gauge be fine ? Or should I spend a little extra for 12?
Get the 12.
FedArm SS12.
Just watched your video. My H&R is decked out just like yours. I own a number of Short Lane and Chaszel adapters in various calibers.
I really like the Chaszel adapters. All of mine are the 18" length, and all shoot very well.
gotta love when you can ad a gun to your gun
Great lil guns!
That was a cool video, I really didn't think that H&R could be improved, but the stock is nice. Only change I would make is a Paracord sling. Also I have that hiviz sight and it's awesome, but likes to move. I put a ranger band on it- under the light pipe- and that keeps it in place. Also I would love to see a video of the. 22 insert. Are they really accurate at all?? Say at 20-30 yards
I do like the pistol grip on the shotgun but in illinois that is now considered an illegal weapon modification believe it or not. So I have to stick with lesser mods but nice to see it on that one.
That’s cool! I am curious, What is the LOP with the new butt stock attached? I have an old 20ga H&R Trooper Jr Model 490 single shot that my dad bought for me to hunt with decades ago. He cut down the butt stock some so that it would fit me better. I was around 11 or 12 years old at the time. Now that i am ALOT older lol, i was thinking about going with a new butt stock like yours or an adjustable one like the AR’s have. It’s hard to find stuff like that for these old H&R’s.
Thanks for another awesome informative video Bryan.
Ad this item's rate
Very well done. Most of us want high speed gear but low speed is still good.
Yep. And sometiimes low speed means less to go wrong
Survival On Purpose Absolutely. This is why a pair of pliers and a screw driver is longer lasting that a multitool. I like multitools but they are a size and weight compromise.
And you can put adapters tubes and shoot all types of ammo out of a one-barrel breakdown shotgun.
Yep
Don’t know about the rules, but I watched a few videos today showing barrels being sawed off , installing sites ... etc.
when did this rule go into action? More importantly your video is awesome, nice shotgun
Nice conversion. Go one step further make a titan paracord sling and you would be all set.
Nice. I’d like to see the 22 conversion too.👍🏻
Sorry for my second comment .... After gating that .22, 9mm gun adapters. Please make survival kit setup video by using both storage compartment with 5 "C" & bullets/ adapters . That will be good video
If I can get my hands on some adapters I will definitely make a video or two.
Will this furniture work for any break barrel action single shot shotgun?
I am not sure.
Two acquaintances of mine, one a Marine and the other a Soldier both Viet war combat vets told me that (topper) saw'd off single 12ga saved their lives. They both said it's all you need. Good enough for me, also my Dad a WW2 combat vet only had a 12ga wingmaster in the hallway closet with a box of 00buck above, on a shelf, I guess that's all you need. I have the single 12 in my car trunk with a box of 00buck and a hack saw next to it and a half round bastard file, I should find a pipe cutter to to it nice but I figure nice isn't a necessity.
That may be all they needed but things have changed. A single shot shotgun is no match for multiple thugs with semi-auto pistols. Or at least nottyhe optimal choice anyway.
Cool upgrades, I would add my set of cylinder adapters that way I can shoot 12 , 20 and 410 gauge, and also 22 rim fire
Yep, and black powder
Starting at 12ga, I'm up to adding 9mm, .45 ACP, .38 SPL/.357 Mag, .32 ACP/.32 S&W/.32 S&W Long/.32 H&R Mag/.327 Fed. All in 18" rifled. Search Chaszel. Top quality at a great price.
That’s what I did, I put 410,s and 22lr in stock along with a compass fire steel and a magnifier . In the hole of the pistol grip I fitted a minke multi tool, in the for-end I have a fire starter kit along with the Short Kane adapters ( not in original container ) I had to use 3/4” over for a container for them. I also cut barrel to 18 1/2 “. It is awesome for a truck gun.
do you always have your gun cocked when you do videos ?
Where did you find the forearm? I've bought 2 from Midway thinking they had a thumbscrew and had to return them. They didn't have the thumbscrew. Thanks,
I think mine came from Midway a few years ago. I had this stuff at least 5 years waiting to do a video.
You can also change the channel on your TV with that
Or at least turn it off! Lol
Wow . I don't have any Knowledge ab guns . Even I don't take gun in hand or fire single shot in my life . But I like this video look workable modification . By the way suggest me some good channel to start . Thanks

Great video! i cant seem to find the front hand guard online anywhere.. can you help me out?
Here's what I found on the old Google www.riflestock.com/store/product-category/shotgun-products/shotgun-stocks/shotgun-forends/
@@SurvivalOnPurpose thank you brother !
Been looking, but can not find the cheater forearm you mentioned. Anyone have a link? Thanks.
Here is an inexpensive option for sights from RMC Ox Yoke co the CVA Durabright™ Fiber Optic Sights
I was in a pawn shop today, buying this very same gun for a cheap 12 gauge to shoot. Also there was a guy in there looking to purchase an AR lookalike in .22 cal. I don't know the fire rate on that gun, but it was not fully auto, so it was a round for every trigger pull. My point is in a self defense situation, who wins at close range. Me with one pull of the trigger and 27 #4 buck, which incidentally is .22 also, or him having to pull the trigger 27 times? LOL.
I venture to guess I could get off a second shot before he pulls it 20 times!
I woudl submit that neither is the best choice for defensive use but that either would be far better than a baseball bat
I hope they leave this video up.
...have one in .357/20 ga - gonna have the 20 cut from 26 or 28 ro 18 1/2 inches...would love to find a 12 ga bbl...
.357/ 20 g ???
Short lane adapters work great , got my cousin one of the 22 long rifle ones for Christmas.
I absolutely love their 209 black powder adapter.
This is a super cool mod to a 12 gauge shotgun, however, my shotgun is a 20ga bolt action capable of three shots in succession with one shell in the chamber and two in the magazine. My question is what is the weight savings on this mod? If I could lighten my 20ga a couple pounds it would be awesome to break it down and backpack it in to my base camp rather than sling it which has caused some concerns from other backpackers if deploying from a trail head rather than from a private location. Thank you, Bryan. It's a shame that You Tube has put so many restrictions on gun videos. I understand the reason but not all of us are into evil acts of violence, just ordinary citizens exercising our 2nd Amendment rights.
The real advantage in my mind is not weight savings, it is versatility and the "onboard" storage. For example, there are adapters that allow this to become a muzzle-loading shotgun, or to shoot multiple calibers so you can use whatever ammo you can get your hands on in a "doomsday" type event. Or you can carry a compact survival kit in your stock.
@@SurvivalOnPurpose Great! Understand that, Bryan. Appreciate it, thanks much!
What is the "reason"? UA-cam never explains their reasoning so how do you know? Don't assume good will on their part.
Any input on barrel length that would do well for hunting and defense? I'm thinking 18.25" might be a bit short.
18.25" is fine as far as I know. A lot of people think longer barrels on shotguns improve the range or pattern but I can't find any data to support that. The choke seems to be the big factor there. A longer barrel does seem to make it easier to swing swing on a bird smoothly but it could be a detriment in a self defense situation.
20-22” is the middle ground for both. If you are going to be in more brush, go a bit shorter. If you are going to be in more open ground, go a bit longer. A few more inches on the barrel won’t add weight like a few more inches of rifle barrel does. A longer barrel on a shotgun helps with accuracy the same as a longer barrel on a rifle, longer sight radius. The great thing about singles is that they are light. You could carry two and barely notice it. I have a long barrel (27.5”) and a short barrel (18.25”) in 12 gauge and a 28” barrel in 20 gauge. I can carry both 12s without worry.
Been looking for a forend for my ATI Nomad. Thanks...
A fault is the use of plastic in the fore end hinge. It breaks and is impossible to find a replacement.
I like it, I like it a lot
Great video
I built mine for cheaper. Just gotta shop around. I also used a One Tigris ammo ouch on the stock. It has a zippered pocket for extra storage. I’m not putting an adapter with mine. I have 12 gauge flares, buckshot, bird shot, and slugs. It was still very late and had storage space
Whatever works.
Survival On Purpose that’s what it’s all about. Getting quality stuff that works best for each individual. The whole point is to make it hone safe
In my youth, if it had the shell ejector, with a hand full of shells in my left hand ready to go, I could damn near shoot it as fast as a pump gun!
If you have an 18-20 inch barrel disassemble and put the parts in socks and vacuum seal it as a trunk gun. The we had a long gun robbery in the area narrative falls apart.
The only thing I would change is shortening the barrel to close to 19"
very nice
Thanks
Looks better, but it still is the same function wise. Not sure what the point is. I'd rather have a salt and pepper shaker built into the stock!
The REAL question here is......where did you get a Case-hardened-receiver NEF SB1 in such good condition for $100???
About 5-6 yeatds ago used
Hatfield Arms already has one -$99 at most Walmart's.
The hatfields are garbage guns made of inferior metals
Mine hangs on the gun rack and will never be fired again because of the bulge in the breach ...
Chinesium guns aren’t worth $25.
There are tons of items you can find like that on eBay. I dont always like making Bezos more rich with my money, so I prefer giving it to American sellers directly.
I purchased one like what you did great job .watch David cranberry good video as well thanks
With the added 22 adapter, this would become a budget Air force Pilot Survival M6 essentially.
The people of Atlantis called Chuck Norris a wimp. There were no survivors. (Original joke)
I heard chuck Norris has a third fist under his beard :-)
Nice
Enough space in this buttstock to have just enough 22 amo for a war! 😂
there is a lot of room there
It would be nice if they still made that shotgun
I bought mine used.
was sorry to hear about daves house fire
2 years later just try to find a $100 single shot shotty.
By the I found me a schrade schf1 but I really want the schf2sm or a schf2.
Fishing gear in butt end
"Least tactical." Tell that to Matthew Quigley.
That wa not a shotgun. It was, however, a movie and it was also set about 150 years ago or so.
@@SurvivalOnPurpose Thank God you wasn't stupid and cut the barrel down like many of the idiots who "made" their survival shotgun and cut down the velocity of the shells and distance. However, one can carry far more 410 shells than 12 gauge or 20 gauge. I put high gloss green nail polish on my 410 bead sight, which was quite cheap and highly visible. Since mine is an old Rossi with a wood stock, 28 " barrel, Modified Choke(and no safety), I did not change out the stock. Sorry, but wood furniture is better looking than synthetic. I can carry 9 assorted shells on my butt stock (Mossy Oak rifle bullet holder). I can carry an additional 20 assorted rounds in a rifle pouch on my belt(designed to hold 14, 6 will sit in the middle) I found a leather woman's purse(Good Will) with a long leather strap that now is my shoulder sling. I have no intention of ever buying inserts to shoot other than 410. I have, however kept some old high brass, so I could "black powder" it, like an old muzzle loader(which also uses less Pyrodex and shot than a 12 gauge). If one wants, the best survival weapon, with long term in mind, portability and thriftiness, then one can't beat a 410(though your range is cut down compared to a 12 gauge, though rabbits on cold days is no problem).
I believe at 4:34 that’s actually a “thumbhole” stock, not a pistols grip. Our state AG would take issue with you.
I live in free America so I can have any kind of stock I want.
I think of Dave Canterbury as Bryan Stevens Lite. He's good but he's no master plumber.
Exactly ;-)
Today you can buy a pump shotgun new for what you spent...
Honestly your suggestion is good but not practical for survival, I customized my ATI Nomad 12GA 28" Single Shotgun with modified barrel and buttstock shorten to resemble a Mad Max survival pistol style with 5 adapters to shoot a .17, 22lr, 9mm and a .357, is it illegal to what I did? hell no but when that day come, anarchy breaks out and you need to protect yourself who's gonna care!
So you publicly posted that? Hmmm
@@SurvivalOnPurpose Yes I am because I am an American citizen who believes in sharing is caring like yourself ;)
@@SurvivalOnPurpose Your setup is good for most but I prefer a more versatile mobile and compact weapons that can be modified not add on more weights

A single shot is a good poor man's gun but after all the ad on s you could afford a Mavrick 88 in a life or death situation a large animal may not give you enough time to reload a single shot on the positive side lots of game can be taken with a single shot and no one wants to be shot with a 12 ga regardless of style
Cant see u
I know you are safe but pointing guns at a camera. Might give children or idiots the wrong idea.
It's still a single shot shotgun either way you dress it up
It is. And it is horrible for defensive use but pretty versatile for hunting, especially with adapters that allow you to shoot other calibers and even black powder.
Wow Bryan! Really? I mean REALLY? A deplorable with a gun with the entire United States of America Flag in the background with padded stars that just might be uh hum! All for really cool survival modgrades.
Please put that gun back to original condition....cuz, that version is bubba'd to hell.
Short shrink tubes for rifle and pistol calibers are not accurate. Buy the longest shrink tubes u can find for calibers that need rifled batrels.......
