as a Walmart sporting goods associate who sells these guns on a regular basis. I love to see what people come up with on how to improve a product. overall I think it was very interesting and made a good product an even better product. I will be tuning in to your videos more often. keep up the good work.

This project ruined the gun. If a choke was added, it would have been fine.

It's supposed to be a "survival shotgun". By removing the choke, he took a firearm that would have been good out to 40 yards for say rabbits, quail, doves, squirrel, turkey(etc) and made it into a 20 yard gun. Why do all you folks think a 20 inch barrel is so awesome, when our ancestors had much longer guns back in the old days. It was a 28 inch barrel, so he saved a whole 8 inches and lost distance of shooting. It already came with a Modified choke, so it would have been accurate with slugs and 00 buck.

    • @peggyzeigler8760
      @peggyzeigler8760 6 років тому +3

Midland is already making a 20 inch barreled shotgun WITH a choke for a few dollars more. I agree with you, he took a perfectly working shotgun that was good for at least 40 yards and turned it into a 20 yard "mule kicker".

That trigger guard did not blue because it is aluminum, and you can only blue steel. Also, the loop you have that holds the gun folded is not a good idea, cause you have both contact points touching, which will cause a galvanic reaction. You must put a finish on at least one surface so the bare metal does not actually touch each other. A galvanic reaction is when you take two different types of bare metal and put them together. It will slowly and even sometimes quickly cause one or both metals to corrode. There must be something between those bare metals that stop them from touching. That is why all the parts of a gun will usually be coated in some type of a finish, because it stops the different types of metals from touching. Usually guns that do not have a finish are all using the same type of metal, so they do not need a finish, or they will only have a finish on the metals that are of a different type. The finish is not actually there to make the gun look cool, it is there to stop galvanic reactions. You cannot just take a bare piece of aluminum and a bare piece of steel and put them together, cause it will cause a galvanic reaction, so you must put a finish on at least one of the metals so they do not actually touch. You could have just figured out why the trigger guard did not blue by simply removing it and touching it with a magnet, cause the magnet would not have stuck to it, and would have stuck to the rest of the gun. The parts that the magnet stick to can be blued, but the parts that are not magnetic cannot be blued. You would have to paint the trigger guard or Anodize or plate it. Also, not all types of steel can be blued. Most stainless steel is not magnetic and cannot be blued. Basically the cheaper the stainless the more magnetic it is, which means the more it will rust. Cheap stainless has less nickel, and expensive stainless has lots of nickel in it which stops it from rusting. Blueing is just a form of rust, which is why you cannot blue metals like aluminum or expensive stainless steel, cause those metals have protection against rust.

I have one of these and have not done any woodworking as you have. I cut the barrel to 18 3/4". Installed Williams Universal Slugger Shotgun Fire Sights, Uncle Mike's sling studs, 550 Paracord sling, 8 round shell holder & Limbsaver butt pad (essential for me!) My GF sewed up a custom sleeve from a blue jeans pant leg that conceals the gun and a few survival items. I adjusted the hammer spring and cleaned/lubed the trigger mechanism. When budget allows I will be getting a few Pathfinder rifled adaptors, but each one costs as much as the shot gun. It's definitely a fun gun to mod & experiment with. Thanks for making this video.

Some added possibilities for that firearm include a side saddle with extra rounds. Perhaps the added weight would help mitigate recoil some. You might also consider chamber inserts to go with the gun. As for the butt stock pocket, I'd put some storm roof matches, some bacitracin infused cotton balls, and some sort of flint of magnesium fire starting capability. What else? A little baggie with some gun lube in it.

Q quick thought on using the stock as storage. Cut a small piece of sheetmetal into a cover and mount it on the butt of the stock. Now drill or cut the buttplate so you can slide the metal cover over the hole so you can store supplies inside the stock with a handy access door. I have
a 410 I fixed in a similar fashion but I drilled an extra hole for extra storage. Great ideas and great video. Have a great day and keep looking for that better tomorrow.

Ur nearly finished project is pretty cool, and definitely compact. Can't go wrong with the $99 initial investment, even if the mods had gone badly. For those who are technically challenged, or don't have time to do mod's, the Iver Johnson IJ70020SY-18 is a nice compact fold-down youth 20ga with an 18" full choke barrel. It takes up to 3" shells and has a blade front sight. MSRP $165.

I bought a .410 model today. The trigger was very hard and my wife could not cock it. I found a link where you can put washers under the leaf spring after removing the butt stock and it is very smooth now. Just find it on You Tube and it will explain it better than me. Before the trigger must have been 20 pounds, ??? but now like other shotguns. Maybe 4-5 pounds. 5 minute easy fix.

Very nice outcome. Pretty. One of the things I do is drill an appropriate sized hole to glue a button compass into the pistol stock. Plus any wood stock on any of my guns (with the exception of surplus weapons) will get a compartment hole. The most important item in the compartment is a small self-sealing cylindrical lighter with some cotton. Nice job.

Very resourceful. Necessity truly is the mother of invention. If you haven't already done so, you might consider contacting the manufacturer so they are aware of the potential of this model with respect to manufacturing future models.
I would likely keep something in the buttstock hideaway maybe a shortened-modified boresnake cleaner, and might even consider one of those buttstock accessories for holding six shotshells. The tough choice is how many shotshells and in which varieties should be carried. If it is a survival shotgun then maybe a case that is compact but has storage enough for all the stuff you might need. As a young hunter I once encountered a huge pile of recent scat and only had 6's and 7-1/2's on me for hunting birds after which I always carried a few slugs for just-in-case.
Hauser Hooch has a good idea of a .22 LR adapter but then the law starts to get technical about ATF's point of view about modification.
    Great video, Thanks!

Very, very slick. Not that you need any more improvements, it's easy enough to install a button compass into the pistol grip. I like Stanley of London button compasses as they are air filled and not fluid filled-- they don't freeze up. Anyway it's easy to do. Take a 3/4" drill bit and drill down 1/4" on the bottom of the pistol grip (make sure to center it) and simply glue the compass into the recessed space. I do that to all my .22 rifles. Paracord around the stock (or bankline) gives you useful cordage. Your fit and finish of your shotgun is great.

I have this setup in my H&R. I used paracord to fill in any additional space and keep the adapters from moving around in the hole.

    You ask for additional ideas?
🤔 Can you do additional storage holes in the stock?
IF all you can get is the one, then add a .22s/l/lr adapter.
IF you can do a secend, then add a 410/.44mag adapter.
    IF you can get a 3rd, add a .223rem/556
THEN ADD a 12gage bandolier sling for normal shells (slugs/#1buck/#4shot)
AND a stock sleeve, (5, 12g loops) for
    a 12g signal flair,
    a 12g&20g match case,
a lockback (for skinning small game),
    a small maglight,
    And a boresnake

I got the 410 and the 12 gauge. A cheap, reliable gun that can fold up, take a beating and still work? It's perfect for emergency survival. A good thing to store in there would be oil or whatever you need for maintenance. If you've got a proper survival kit, your fishing line and everything else can store in the bag. But a bottle of oil could get crushed unless it's protected inside something solid. A gauge or caliber adapter would be good too, but only if you think you'll need to scavenge. Scavenging is less likely to be necessary in a short emergency (because you want to find civilization to be rescued), but more likely in a long term disaster (where if you do find civilization, don't expect any help).

I got the 20ga and cut it down to 19.5" and took it to the shotgun range. I didn't have any paper to pattern the gun but did have my electric trap thrower. The shotgun performed much better then I thought it would with an open choke. I had no trouble hitting clays out to 20 yards but after that it got sketchy. I was able to hit clays starting from low gun with the hammer down. I was afraid the clay would be out of range before I could cock and shoulder the gun but I had no trouble getting hits. Next I'll be shortening the stock and add a slip-on recoil pad.

Really sweet job. Kinda funky in it's original guise. The barrel is way too long and the excessive fold when loading/unloading takes some getting used to. Also I prefer an ejector to an extractor. No shit man, a 12 ga without a recoil pad ain't fun. This gun shoulda had a pad. I like top breaks and have a Rossi single shot in .410 and love shooting it. As I'm nearly 70 with three eye surgeries, I tend to shy away from 12/20 gauge guns.
I have an 870P (12 ga) with wood stocks purchased in 1981. It had the deer/slug rifle sight 20" barrel but I swapped for a 28" vent rib and Simmons scope. Eventually got the barrel cut to a hair over 19" and added an elastic shell holder. It does have a good 1" recoil pad. However it is a bit much for me these days. Nice video and good work. Enjoy your 12 ga while you're young my friend.

Very nice upgrade - That wood finish is nice! An alternate option for folks less mechanically inclined is the Hunt Group SS12. It's a 20" barrel 12 gauge with black polymer furniture that already folds down completely. It also has a hollow buttstock for more storage.

I just need to upgrade the bead sight to fiber optic & add a side saddle. Total investment should be about $150 plus ammo.

I think it turned out great. And it's not like you chopped and hacked on a collectible gun that isn't made anymore anyway. I saw someone who used a router to carve a recess in their shotgun stock to fit an altoids tin and held it in place with an elastic shell cuff.

Batteries go in the butt. They attach to the flashlight/laser pointer on the side of the barrel. You also need a bayonett and a knife in the butt below the batteries. Unless you put the batteries in the grip because less distance.

Great work. Would make a great option for the sorts of people who like to bury guns in pvc tubes for a rainy day.
Try putting the hook under some sort of spring tension so it stays flush with the stock rather than dangling down. Also one of those cheap shell carriers that slip over the stock, and add a sling. Also maybe a recoil pad. And you've got a pretty perfect cheap gun.

hit the 7 c's of survival that you can
Cordage- rope para cord, fishing line or something of the sorts
Candle- Matches, a small flashlight of sorts, something that makes light
Cup- maybe a small pill bottle like thing to store this in?
Cleansing- Wet wipes and/or iodine tablets. depending on your terrain and hygiene needs
Cover- probably can't hit this one, but usually a warming layer or poncho. maybe one of those trashbag looking ponchos that are 99 cents, being budget minded
Cutting tool- one of those small utility knifes should work great. if not a razor blade you would usually use in a larger utility knife and some tape to make a makeshift holding point
Canteen- unlikely you can hit this one
i know this is late but i'd like to see an attempt on it

How about a bore snake and adapters for other types of ammo in the butt? You might even have enough room for a flint and steel or a ferro rod in there too. Give it a sling with all sorts of ammo for the adapters and a butt pad that can hold multiple types of ammo and you have a really great survival shotgun!

  • @darthjadodge

Get a Short Lane 12 gauge to 22LR Rifled Zombie Adapter to go into the butt. It's like getting an extra gun for $40 more and you can take small game without shredding your dinner. There is a lot of room in the bottom of the stock to drill some holes for a few shotgun shells and a half dozen .22s. You could use a Velcro strip to hold the ammo in place. If the 12 gauge recoil is to hefty for you, Hatfield makes a single shot .410 version.

You should put the Short Lane stack and Pak caliber kit in the butt stock it makes it so you can shoot 20ga 410 45 long colt and 22lr long and short out of your 12 ga and it all stacks onto itself making the same size as a 12ga shell

I wonder how they compare to the Aguila ones. I feed my Shockwave build the Agula #4/#1 buckshot blend shells and I can't speak highly of them enough. Superb ammo in a tiny little form factor, and I can run 8 shells in my 14" Mossberg.

      @WilGolden 3 роки тому

@@booliganshootingsports The empty shell is the same length, but they use a roll crimp, so the final package is near 1/4 inch longer for the Federal, and the Federal will feed in Mossberg and Remington pumps without an adapter. At least mine. The Aguila won't for me.
