That’s if your workplace doesn’t force you to work from home, as has been customary since the pandemic… so many workplaces have given up their premises now that owners have realised they can keep more profit by keeping everyone at home. Or in the case of small businesses, eye watering energy costs are hitting them too so they’re asking their staff to stay home. So now we all have to work from a cold house, as well as eat sleep and generally live there. Of course we’ll get fed up and go somewhere warm…. I despair at where this is all going :(

Me too, I was one of seven children growing up and when I was about 11 they bought in a law that any family with more than 4 children got free school meals.nit was so difficult to get my mum to accept. We dad worked as did my mum in the evening but making ends meet was really hard. In the end I managed to persuade her and we finally had enough food

Yes, every dystopia seems to come true, it‘s really scary. All the books I read, the films I‘ve seen, here we are now. My German grandmother lived through the two world wars, and she told me lots of stories. From inflation to collecting firewood and digging up roots to put something on the table, and I never thought I would see times like that, but we‘re getting closer and closer. The good thing is that I asked a lot and she answered, sometimes she even showed me “wartime cooking“ (btw, there are yt channels about that as well). This has been happening for years... it's called shopping centers... how many old people do you notice sitting around shopping centers? or spending all day in the library.... last winter my husband and I lived in the library.. at home we lived in one room, our bedroom, with our microwave, kettle, toaster,.. daughter's borrowed laptop as our telly..blankets pegged over windows... i didn't speak to a soul for 3 months..( except the library assistant or the shop girl..... sometimes we used our pension card to drive around on the public buses..( we are both veterans and served in the gulf 1)......I don't see winning any time soon...the house heating broke down a few months ago.. no way to pay for a repair.. nothing left of value to sell. we get asked ...why we dont march on 11 Nov.. its a joke...a shameful joke about how old, and 'British' ;) people are treated in UK. ... you will pay for everything but own nothing,...and you will be happy.... my husband pulled out one of his own teeth a few weeks ago.. he was in some much pain...he couldn't bear it anymore.. he spent hours in bathroom wiggling it.. a back tooth.. very worried with this winter coming.

I live in Canada, and am old enough to have known many people, and heard their first hand accounts, of immigrating here in the 50's and 60's from Britain, Ukraine, Germany, Netherlands, France, Italy, Greece, etc.. It feels like we collectively have been infantilized for some time, and certainly have been undergoing advanced dependency training for the last couple of years. The city I live in here in Oregon, has a homeless population of about 1 in 10 people either entirely homeless, or dependent upon nightly charity hostels. The library is used as a warming center, as are a couple of churches, but it's not a good thing for anyone. People come in and fall asleep in a chair, only to be woken up by guards who then throw them out. The homeless bring in their 'service' dogs, who fight and pee, the addicts OD daily in the restrooms, and there are often outbreaks of scabies from using these chairs to not-sleep in. So when you say 'warming centres', I see a very harsh side to that dependency. Side note: this city's second biggest source of income is medical treatment services (addiction, mental illness, hospitals, recovery, oncology), so there is no cure for this rabbit hole you are describing. Independence is a hard way, but the only way. Positive note: who in their right mind would ever trust their government? We are stronger than they know.
Sorry the homeless are in a specific area of Oregon and making life unbearable. Here's the good news, when an illegal encampment sets up in any city...they can be easily swatted and removed to greener pastures of GITMO. We Americans have solutions, but Katie does not.

One of my concerns over recent years is how we treat our elderly. We now feel it is perfectly ok to herd them into 'care homes' of dependency and control. We enable this, and are happy to relinquish responsibility for our elderly relatives. They now have an established model to do this to the rest of us. These places often remove any sense of independence, or the individual. You all eat the same, rise and sleep at the same time, are medicated, entertained, lobotomised, and controlled
That's not accurate, talking out your a$$ with sweeping generalisations as though your an authority on such matters. I worked in a lovely private care home for 13yrs, by and large the elderly who passed through our doors were high depency meaning they needed specialist equipment to move them/bathe them or they'd have neurological issues ie alzeimers and were a danger to themselves and oftentimes violent in their poor condition. Stop judging as though families just punt them off without a seconds thought because I've witnessed the despair and guilt of those who had done their absolute best by their elderly and had no other choice for both their relatives wellbeing as well as their own than to entrust them to a facility that would meet their needs.

In old days gone by the people of the UK took care of their own elderly families, usually the female, but now families have to have both parents working, just to exist!! The governments of the world have broken up families and they are quite happy to do so, so they can control us more😡
You are right in that it can be difficult to put your elders into care homes, but the type of residency depends on where you are in the World. In the US, memory care facilities are different from regular residential care, and there are different levels of care attached to different facilites, all of which are too expensive for most people. The State pays whatever is leftover sometimes. Sometimes not, but it's a pretty harsh system a lot of the time. I've worked in a couple of them as a cook, and I had to fight to get ingredients to make anything, with the staff stealing food at night. No, it's not all sunshine and rainbows at these places, at least not in the US. It's also not helpful to tell people not to 'talk out of their ass'. Do you talk to your charges that way?
There is another fine distinction to make. Just because some elderly are in care homes where the facilities are to care for them properly doesn't mean they are left to languish. The distinction is the family that comes to them regularly for visits. If possible takes them out. An elderly person can languish when kept at home also. Their well being is all in the support of family. No crime in having a loved one in a facility that can care for specific needs. We the family and friends must still be there for what makes life good.
Almost forgot to add that, I am praying for all of my brothers & sisters back there in England (and the UK, in general), and all the rest of you, as well. And I say creatures because I am referring to all forms of life that have nothing but innocence within them (btw heart is a muscle, sincerity is not one of its tasks). Sometime in my past....36 years ago to be precise, I was an 8-year-old child, my parents had a very serious car accident, my mother stayed in hospital for 11 months and my father close to 2 years. Back then I heard this a lot "my prayers are with you and your parents", not going to sugar it, it did piss me right off! It was infuriating as I needed more practical help. Where, or how, to get food? Money for daily life? Well I had a small amount in my piggy bank, for a higher amount... I went to the bank my parents used to ask the clerk for some cash for the school lunch, just like that I asked....he was equally amused and worried. Questions such as - What is happening? Who will help me with school, how do I get to school? Who helps me when I get sick? What if I get scared at night? Questions and fear...but hey someone was praying somewhere! My neighbours were kind as they made a rotating plan during the entire time to make sure that I wasn't "in need". This was practical help, not prayers. This was kindness and compassion, not prayers. All of this just to say that whichever way one might choose to bring peace into their life it is a valid one, praying, meditation, solitude, being in nature, this is needed for self-improvement and sense of happiness. Mocking someone for this is just lack of something in one's life, but it rarely does the job if left at that, action is needed. Be aware, look out for your communities and offer practical assistance if you can. Nowadays if someone tells me about their prayers, I kind of smile and thank them...and most likely will ask if they can help with "x" or "z" ... many souls need a little push ;)
When I lived in the era of the coal fire, we only had one room that was warm, so to supplement that in winter we had a paraffin heater in the kitchen. Then came the 21st century and most people have central heating and the capacity to be warm in every room, but here we are and we can’t afford to put our heating on. If I could swap eras I’d take the coal fire and the one warm room, because if we ran out of coal, “which we didn’t until the strike of 84,” we could pick coal off the local pit tip. No not rose coloured glasses, but I wished I’d still got my coal fire and my own autonomy.
We had the same except a radiator off the back of the fire in the kitchen, the rest of the house had no heating whatsoever but the fire heated the water also. Even so we couldn't afford to light the fire until later afternoons in the winter and had a paraffin stove on standby.
I remember going to school wearing: A cotton vest A wool vest A shirt and tie A jumper A jacket (suit top) A duffel coat with hood A scarf Gloves when it was really cold. Thick wooly stockings with garters to hold them up. And when we got home, only the duffel coat came off! Lol "We 'ad it tough - but we were 'appy!"
I've lived without a heater this winter, but extreme cold weather in Australia isn't comparable to Europe or the UK However, we have experienced a very cold season this year The cost of my electricity has more than doubled, but I'm solo so I'll be OK. It's the elderly paying high rents that I'm concerned about, they just can't afford the high cost of energy 😴

Many elderly living solely on the old age pension in the UK (about the lowest in western Europe) already spend time in libraries etc to keep warm for an hour or two in the winter. Lack of heat in the winter killed a lot more people before centrally heated homes were commonplace. With the impossibly high energy bills this winter the death rate will increase substantially. All the more monstrous because the UK does have sufficient resources to provide cheap heating for everyone but the insane Green policies of successive governments have prevented the extraction of our own oil and gas and coal and closed down nuclear facilities. Our government has made war on us and we are powerless because unlike the Americans we laid down our arms.
Another thing I've been preaching since the 80's when I was a lad - the powers of authority will begin to engineer the societies to be more "manageable and docile". I did not predict that they would replace the population of the "developed western world" with the inhabitants of the undeveloped areas.

Even pre retirement there are options to keep warm if you are into endless cups of tea, a warm cafe, or lunchtime opening pub with a real fire. At one here so many people came to read books or work on laptops, sit in front of the fire during the winter afternoons etc that the publican closed off the fire and added another seating bench!

Me too, I was one of seven children growing up and when I was about 11 they bought in a law that any family with more than 4 children got free school meals.nit was so difficult to get my mum to accept. We dad worked as did my mum in the evening but making ends meet was really hard. In the end I managed to persuade her and we finally had enough food

This has been happening for years... it's called shopping centers... how many old people do you notice sitting around shopping centers? or spending all day in the library.... last winter my husband and I lived in the library.. at home we lived in one room, our bedroom, with our microwave, kettle, toaster,.. daughter's borrowed laptop as our telly..blankets pegged over windows... i didn't speak to a soul for 3 months..( except the library assistant or the shop girl..... sometimes we used our pension card to drive around on the public buses..( we are both veterans and served in the gulf 1)......I don't see winning any time soon...the house heating broke down a few months ago.. no way to pay for a repair.. nothing left of value to sell. we get asked ...why we dont march on 11 Nov.. its a joke...a shameful joke about how old, and 'British' ;) people are treated in UK. ... you will pay for everything but own nothing,...and you will be happy.... my husband pulled out one of his own teeth a few weeks ago.. he was in some much pain...he couldn't bear it anymore.. he spent hours in bathroom wiggling it.. a back tooth.. very worried with this winter coming.

Spot on, Katie! Absolutely and terrifyingly correct. It feels like we collectively have been infantilized for some time, and certainly have been undergoing advanced dependency training for the last couple of years. The city I live in here in Oregon, has a homeless population of about 1 in 10 people either entirely homeless, or dependent upon nightly charity hostels. The library is used as a warming center, as are a couple of churches, but it's not a good thing for anyone. People come in and fall asleep in a chair, only to be woken up by guards who then throw them out. The homeless bring in their 'service' dogs, who fight and pee, the addicts OD daily in the restrooms, and there are often outbreaks of scabies from using these chairs to not-sleep in. So when you say 'warming centres', I see a very harsh side to that dependency. Side note: this city's second biggest source of income is medical treatment services (addiction, mental illness, hospitals, recovery, oncology), so there is no cure for this rabbit hole you are describing. Independence is a hard way, but the only way. Positive note: who in their right mind would ever trust their government? We are stronger than they know.

One of my concerns over recent years is how we treat our elderly. We now feel it is perfectly ok to herd them into 'care homes' of dependency and control. We enable this, and are happy to relinquish responsibility for our elderly relatives. They now have an established model to do this to the rest of us. These places often remove any sense of independence, or the individual. You all eat the same, rise and sleep at the same time, are medicated, entertained, lobotomised, and controlled
That's not accurate, talking out your a$$ with sweeping generalisations as though your an authority on such matters. I worked in a lovely private care home for 13yrs, by and large the elderly who passed through our doors were high depency meaning they needed specialist equipment to move them/bathe them or they'd have neurological issues ie alzeimers and were a danger to themselves and oftentimes violent in their poor condition. Stop judging as though families just punt them off without a seconds thought because I've witnessed the despair and guilt of those who had done their absolute best by their elderly and had no other choice for both their relatives wellbeing as well as their own than to entrust them to a facility that would meet their needs.
It's a very cruel thing to do to the elderly!
@amor fati The concern was about the elderly that were independent, not the elderly with health problems, obviously there would be care for them. In old days gone by the people of the UK took care of their own elderly families, usually the female, but now families have to have both parents working, just to exist!! The governments of the world have broken up families and they are quite happy to do so, so they can control us more😡
You are right in that it can be difficult to put your elders into care homes, but the type of residency depends on where you are in the World. In the US, memory care facilities are different from regular residential care, and there are different levels of care attached to different facilites, all of which are too expensive for most people. The State pays whatever is leftover sometimes. Sometimes not, but it's a pretty harsh system a lot of the time. I've worked in a couple of them as a cook, and I had to fight to get ingredients to make anything, with the staff stealing food at night. No, it's not all sunshine and rainbows at these places, at least not in the US. It's also not helpful to tell people not to 'talk out of their ass'. Do you talk to your charges that way?
There is another fine distinction to make. Just because some elderly are in care homes where the facilities are to care for them properly doesn't mean they are left to languish. The distinction is the family that comes to them regularly for visits. If possible takes them out. An elderly person can languish when kept at home also. Their well being is all in the support of family. No crime in having a loved one in a facility that can care for specific needs. We the family and friends must still be there for what makes life good.
Almost forgot to add that, I am praying for all of my brothers & sisters back there in England (and the UK, in general), and all the rest of you, as well. Sometime in my past....36 years ago to be precise, I was an 8-year-old child, my parents had a very serious car accident, my mother stayed in hospital for 11 months and my father close to 2 years. Back then I heard this a lot "my prayers are with you and your parents", not going to sugar it, it did piss me right off!
It was infuriating as I needed more practical help. Where, or how, to get food? Money for daily life? Well I had a small amount in my piggy bank, for a higher amount... I went to the bank my parents used to ask the clerk for some cash for the school lunch, just like that I asked....he was equally amused and worried.
Questions such as - What is happening? Who will help me with school, how do I get to school? Who helps me when I get sick? What if I get scared at night? Questions and fear...but hey someone was praying somewhere! My neighbours were kind as they made a rotating plan during the entire time to make sure that I wasn't "in need". This was practical help, not prayers. This was kindness and compassion, not prayers. All of this just to say that whichever way one might choose to bring peace into their life it is a valid one, praying, meditation, solitude, being in nature, this is needed for self-improvement and sense of happiness.
Mocking someone for this is just lack of something in one's life, but it rarely does the job if left at that, action is needed. Be aware, look out for your communities and offer practical assistance if you can. Nowadays if someone tells me about their prayers, I kind of smile and thank them...and most likely will ask if they can help with "x" or "z" ... many souls need a little push ;)

When I lived in the era of the coal fire, we only had one room that was warm, so to supplement that in winter we had a paraffin heater in the kitchen. Then came the 21st century and most people have central heating and the capacity to be warm in every room, but here we are and we can’t afford to put our heating on. If I could swap eras I’d take the coal fire and the one warm room, because if we ran out of coal, “which we didn’t until the strike of 84,” we could pick coal off the local pit tip. No not rose coloured glasses, but I wished I’d still got my coal fire and my own autonomy.
We had the same except a radiator off the back of the fire in the kitchen, the rest of the house had no heating whatsoever but the fire heated the water also. Even so we couldn't afford to light the fire until later afternoons in the winter and had a paraffin stove on standby.

Many elderly living solely on the old age pension in the UK (about the lowest in western Europe) already spend time in libraries etc to keep warm for an hour or two in the winter. Lack of heat in the winter killed a lot more people before centrally heated homes were commonplace. With the impossibly high energy bills this winter the death rate will increase substantially. All the more monstrous because the UK does have sufficient resources to provide cheap heating for everyone but the insane Green policies of successive governments have prevented the extraction of our own oil and gas and coal and closed down nuclear facilities. Our government has made war on us and we are powerless because unlike the Americans we laid down our arms.
Another thing I've been preaching since the 80's when I was a lad - the powers of authority will begin to engineer the societies to be more "manageable and docile".
I did not predict that they would replace the population of the "developed western world" with the inhabitants of the undeveloped areas.
They did this to get us to where we are now.

You are so right Katie, both my wife are retired and on a fixed income. From day one we decided to go to the library daily from October. We also realised this was another form of control. Sunday’s we will have to freeze. Thanks for your great comments.
Even pre retirement there are options to keep warm if you are into endless cups of tea, a warm cafe, or lunchtime opening pub with a real fire. At one here so many people came to read books or work on laptops, sit in front of the fire during the winter afternoons etc that the publican closed off the fire and added another seating bench!
If the police can arrest two ladies having a walk and a coffee, and in Canada trotting horses over wheelchairs..... then they will be quite capable of doing much worse stuff.
