Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I have planted purple hull peas for the first time this year. I have green pods now and was clueless as to when to pick them. I truly appreciate your wisdom! Anita in Mamou
Once convinced that the peas are completely dry I place them in pint or quart jars and vacuum seal em. My sealer has a jar attachment. I have some going on 3 years that look like the day I put em in there…..Donald
Thank you so much for your reply! You are now my greatest mentor! I've learned so much for so many of your videos! I can not thank you enough for sharing your wisdom. My parents, their parents and their parents were all gardeners! I now have enough property to do a little gardening myself. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have fresh fruits and vegetable home grown and with your advise and wisdom I know we will do well! You have my gratitude!
Thanks man. I just picked my first batch today. I wasnt sure if they were ready because the peas were green but i now know they are ready. Thanks again!
Am watching all your videos from the beginning 6 years ago! My son LOVES your Cajun cooking. I have gotten back into gardening after 35 or 40 years of not gardening. Worked two jobs for a lot of years and now I have time on my hands to do this. I am picking up a Lot of tips from you and several others on You Tube! Thanks a bunch!
Thats what I like about PH peas. They "tell" you when they're ready. I've seen some of the other peas that just turn from green to tan, and it was hard to decide which ones to pick. I like the simpler approach ! ;-)
Hey Anita, purple hull are one of my favorite vegetables in the garden. They're easy to grow, produce really well, can be canned / frozen / dried and taste good. Hope you have a great crop this year.....Donald
So. good to see we are the only folks that raise these peas in out area. My mother has been growing them for 20+ years after a minister from louisiana gave her seed. We save the seed from year to year. We use them in our Community Supported Agriculture bags!
Awesome, thanks! "When-To-Harvest" is one of my biggest problems, and what helps me the best is to actually show me examples of each - early, perfect, late, just like you did in this video!
This was my first year growing and I got so excited about the beans that I snatched them all. A few green but mostly all at the ideal stage. I had no idea what was right. I appreciate this super simple, informative video. Anyone know if you can do anything with the immature pods?
Thank you. How about some tomato tips? My tomatoes are so tall/lush that it's like14' long which have toppled over of course cuz my metal poles are just 8' high. I didn't add any fertilizer, just used compost. My question is, should I start cutting top growth to stop the height growth? It's like a forest now and going over the neighbor's side too.
Tried these a couple years ago and had a cool wet rainy summer and they didn't do much of anything I'm think I'll give em a whorl next season -just a small row- I'd have had to ask on the forum what to do so thanks for the video!! Oh whats growing to the right of the peas?
Hey Donald. I planted PHPs on May 16. I have pretty looking plants, but no sign of flowers. Any idea how long it takes them to mature to harvest time? Thanks
Great - thanks for the visual aid - exactly what I wanted to know. Any hints on getting rid of big black ants that are attacking the plants? I seem to be getting plenty of pods still, but they've stripped a few of the plants. They look like carpenter ants.
I use Liquid Sevin for just about any bug problem I have. I'm not too crazy about using it once the pods have formed but if they're destroying the plants? .....Donald
My purple hull peas are about ready to pick, so your info is REALLY helpful... Mine are in, what you're calling "racing stripe" mode and 1/2 purple stage. My question is, once picked, will the plants continue to produce or do I need to pull up the plants and plant again? Thanks again and stay cool; it's 98 degrees here in central Texas, so I imagine y'all are feeling the dog days there, as well!
Since they don’t all come in at the same time you’ll probably be picking for the next 2-3 weeks. Once you’re done they will start flowering again and produce again. The second harvest isn’t as good as the first so you’ll need to decide whether to replant or not. If you do decide to replant and since it only takes 60-70 days for em to make you’ll have plenty time before the first killing frost…..Donald
I thought I had enough this year, but noooo... one of the hazards of trying to square foot garden. Some crops just REALLY need a lot more room. I'll definitely replant, even though it seems like the sun would just devour small seedlings trying to sprout this time of year! Thanks for your knowledge on this; I really LOVE those pink-eyed, purple hull peas!
@TheCajuntransplant ... Mine don't turn that color. LOL Well most of the time at least. I was getting lots of request for these types of videos soooooooo......Donald
You’re wrong and right at the same time I will pick all of them but the last one the first one we pick them so we can have snaps in our purple hull peas
Heeeeyyyyy, you forgot the stage where they are slimy, dark, and growing gray hairs all over them...lol Just saying! I like these "when to harvest video's" you are on to something big!!!!!!
My purple hull peas as full of wasps, I am not sure why but this is the second year this has happened and therefore I am scared to come close to gathering my peas.
No money. We get all we want then give the rest to family and friends. I will let my grand daughter sell a few things that she'll be growing this summer......Donald
I'm new to growing cowpeas so thank you.. this was simple and to the point😊
Thanks so much! Your voice is so calming😊
I'm going to grow peas this year.
God bless you real good.
Love, Jude from Kentucky 💚🥀🐴🇺🇲

Thank you.
Thanks great information.
Great video
I’m letting some dry now that are still in the hull. Once dry I’ll shell and vacuum seal in jars, no need for a canner……Donald

Glad it helped....Donald
Thank you Donald :-)

I got 3 rows about to mature hoping the rain lets up so I can get to em....Donald
Maybe one day you’ll be able to move back to the country. I lived in the city for 8 years and I’m so glad I moved back home……Donald
you mentioned that the brown stage was for putting up "dry" how do you do this?
@loveofvegetables ... That happens every year, I've yet to have one bother me while harvesting......Donald
When canning your peas, are you just putting plain water in the jars?
If you dont mind my asking, where did you get that fancy huller? Dennis
@happymusics ... I don't like trimming branches on my tomatoes; I just let em grow.......Donald
My brown field peas have started podding.... I Blanche and freeze.... Im not sure when to pick... Can u give me a clue

Donald, where do you buy your peas? The different ones I bought are growing runners all over the ground. The do not look like yours growing up on top.
You can find the "Top Pick" php online at Morgan County Seeds.....Donald
@TheCajuntransplant ... Mine don't turn that color. LOL Well most of the time at least. I was getting lots of request for these types of videos soooooooo......Donald
Loved your video. Where are you from? Your accent seems like Southern Louisiana.
You are correct. I am a Cajun.....Donald
+webcajun River Parishes? That's where I grew up.
I have noticed quite a number of pods that have few peas in them. Do you know why this happens?
Just guessing here but I think the later it gets in the season the more this will happen. I just pick them along with the other pods…..Donald
webcajun thank you! I wasn’t sure if it might be a pollination issue or not
You’re wrong and right at the same time I will pick all of them but the last one the first one we pick them so we can have snaps in our purple hull peas
Whichever way you like them is the way to go …. Donald
Heeeeyyyyy, you forgot the stage where they are slimy, dark, and growing gray hairs all over them...lol Just saying! I like these "when to harvest video's" you are on to something big!!!!!!
