I just watched it for the second time. This time stopping to read the newspaper clippings. and, being aware of what the end story was, it was even sadder the second time around. In the newspaper article, talking about the steam engine "that may run forever", the chief engineer says that Bibo will still be around even when the rest of us aren't.
Art doesn't need to be explained, nor does it need to have a single clear meaning. However... this short has all the clues you need to understand the context. From the opening scenes we can learn of Bibo's 10,000 year lifespan, the upcoming war and the problem of "Steamdog A6" models attacking real dogs. Bibo was designed to serve - without people to serve he appears to have no purpose. He is also built to love - which means without people he is lonely. Humanity is already on the brink and facing many threats, and poor Bibo is set to outlive the humans. But, that's just what we're conditioned to see here - it is certainly not all there is to see... Bibo's desperate need to serve, even to the end - is no different from the human drive to build homes, collect pretty objects and procreate. All meaning in life is abstract, and emergent, arising from what we are and what innate drives we were created with. We each find subjective meaning in our actions... humans... cockroaches... steamdogs... Bibo. So, whilst we might look at Bibos extended life and consider it meaningless in the absence of us humans - merely some hollow echo of a past meaning. In truth, we're ALL just following patterns laid down in our very design. Bibo is finding purpose in his life... and his endless chore is no less meaningful than the strange hamster wheels we put ourselves on. This is a small corner of a world, where life and derived meaning continues as it must. Steam or otherwise, we are each products of impulse and design. I may be looking too deep, but this is where this short takes me. I see life and meaning here... certainly no less emptiness and futility than there had always been. Just my 2c _(as adjusted for inflation)_
A robot that loves children and adults. Helps where it can. Thinks. Learns. Fixes things right on the spot. Signs autographs, "takes pictures with children". The police love him. It serves ice cream at the same corner every day. They all call him the ice cream man. War. Everybody dies. Ice cream man is lonely. Rebuilds a little corner of its world. Builds three robots that look like the children he once knew. They break down occasionally. He fixes them....the end.
Good story. All post- apocalypse, yes? The headlines were old and Bibo figured a way to fulfill his programming including, customer maintenance even when his original customers were Dust. The living girl on his knee is from a time when "he thought he was" a "dad". Endless mundanity at the end of the world is f*cking bleak. Bravo!!
So the headlines were correct and the robots led to the end of the world and all that is left is a robot ice cream vendor who builds and maintains his own animatronic customers so he can continue serving his function in the one small remaining corner of the world. That's pretty damn bleak, but I guess there is still ice cream.
This is a Exquisite sequential to the essentials of loneliness. Oh how I do wish there was one way, for me to learn the piano in the beginning to play.
Beautiful animation. Having done CGI, I can tell you, this was a huge effort. Little details, like when he's pushing the cart, and it hits a low grate in the sidewalk are very well done! The plot was somewhat confusing, but here's my take on it: At first I thought he goes to his job every day, selling ice cream to 3 children (at 8:00 in the morning for some reason). Then the little girl gets injured (but he can only perceive it as 'she stopped working'). He takes her body back to his house and 'fixes her', and we see the picture of her sitting on his knee, indicating that she's fine, and can keep having ice cream for breakfast. But after seeing the end, it seems he goes to his job every day, selling ice cream to 3 ROBOT children (at 8:00 in the morning for some reason). Then the little girl DOES stop working, because she's broken. He takes her back to his house and 'fixes her', and we see the picture of her sitting on his knee, indicating that they're all insane robots who eat ice cream for breakfast. I assume he built the robot children after the world was destroyed, to give his life meaning. Or maybe because he needed someone to eat his leftover ice cream...
close to what I think. I think he may have been owned by a family and when the war destroyed everyone, he re-created the ones he loved to continue to serve them.
Incredible details. And not just that. Correct details that corresponds to the equivalent details in reality. That is impressive, and I am very picky about things like this.
The CGI in this masterpiece is absolutely brilliant. In the style of the "Fallout" video games. (The good ones, anyway.. 1,2,3,4 & NV) Sort of a "steampunk art deco".
Complex to say the least...Robots mourning the loss of humans in a tragic portrayal as the end of AI comes to the realization that it cannot recreate its Master....Humans....Did I get that right Anton?
Nice adaptation of The Dairy-Cart Horse, a poignant story passed down from the 19th century, probably grounded in a real event somewhere. It explores how intention, function, and purpose can be separate things, but each can still have its own value. The original story would make a good short film of its own, actually, but it isn't really sci-fi.
I really enjoy the robot clips. Maybe it the human characteristic they portray in the clips. A different quick film has two motorized devices on a planet. Trying to find areas to test bean sport growth. Its really good..
Why? Nearly all sci- fi short films ir other short films have negative contents or no or a bad ending! Are all makers depressive? I cannot understand how this will attract people to watch more short films!
Beautiful.. okay so did he finally find a friend then at the end of time with that little girl robot? I think that's what happened. I will guess that for me for a happy ending I was really depressed watching this.. I hope he has a friend now..but I didn't see her at the end but hopefully one day he can fix her? Idk..ugh..😫🤖👧🏼
Bibo was old nice robot he was famous for a long time but after the destruction or apocalypse every human became extinct so he made three human robots and program them to buy ice cream everyday so he has a purpose in his life
Red's cousin robot. No wasted views. Not sure how long he can hang on... Getting less possible to find good videos at Dust... apparently I've watched them all :(
Similar when you read/hear "There Will Come Soft Rains" (which this is very much like this in theme) you wonder how the house still has fresh eggs and bacon after all these years.....
Ehh... sorry. The CGI was decent enough, but what am I supposed to be feeling from this? Sad? Nostalgic? Bored? Yeah, the twist at the end was kind of clever, but not really that much of a payoff, given the slow pace.
Perhaps if the piece got you to feel something then it did what the artist intended. From many of the posts I have gathered that some viewers have not the ability to feel. Count yourself lucky that you're not numb.

Oh my God, that's heart-wrenching! 😢How sad for the poor Bibo, he's left all alone in the midst of nothing.
Beautifully done!
Good
This short film has more character development than most of Disney's Star Wars movies, especially T.L.J.

But he failed
@@murnimira3480 humanity failed
zohaib ansari he failed in that it got to the point where he could no longer repair the children and was completely alone
I see that you also took the time to read that newspaper article "More Human than Human".

I like that old style sci-fi very much! More please!
Good
By "old style", do you mean 'in the style of Steam Punk'?
@@bolanmoonward3483 Not completely. Rather, I meant a style reminiscent of 1950s-1960s sci-fi movies.
The Head line on the news paper clipping at @:35 explains it all. The poor sad robot is the only survivor of a war.
OMG!!! Absolutely amazing 😳 Off the charts graphics, and beautiful story, well done!!
Petition For Bibo 2
Good gosh! You people at DUST are subtle, but you didn't fool me this time! Beautifully done.

Or humanity moved elsewhere in the cosmos and he got left behind.
He wasn't creating robots...he was trying to repair them.
But is it? Ice Cream?
rucussing
Lol.
Prolly reconstituted humans. ;)

MSB 1997 the robot was not hated nor treated poorly according to past articles in the film.

Also noticed the grate and the cart's depression. Fantastic attention to detail.
Very well done! Poor lonely Bibo!
That robot ran out ice cream a long time ago 😖
This one was dustier than most.

Oh man, so sad and bleak.....But very well made video.
A bit predictable but well made and nice. Reminded me of "Gris", the game.
Great job.
I thought the graphics were good, the story leads one to wonder. I love ice cream.
yum yumm! eatem up!!..lol
This is a nice robot animation
It shares the same audio at the start has JT machinima's Titanfall 2 rap
Well done, thought provoking & poignant.
Relaxing, think I'll leave it at that.

Sweet
Thank you, a fine vignette. Too subtle for some viewers it seems, their loss.
Sad😢😢😢😢
That's kinda sad. Still, I would think Bibo would have the time to build a spaceship or a vehicle so he/she/e can move on.
Owesome creation good job all the best
I watched this at school

I think that the single sound he made was a sigh of resignation when he realized that she was irretrievably broken.
A lot of work went into it, and it was beautifully done. But the story just didn't interest me, despite the artistry put into it.
