It got messed up in the early 2000s when record labels starting looking for the best entrepreneurs instead of the best MCs. You had to be able to move units on your own and create your own buzz via avenues like MySpace before they would sign you. If you could do that, you would get signed no matter how bad your music was. If you couldn't do that, they wouldn't sign you no matter how how you were. Trust me, I know.
