He’s getting more verbal but if he sees a hand closing in on his food and water bowl sometimes he spazzes out and takes flight nearly injuring himself every time. He’s too afraid to come out and when he does he’s not sure how to find his way back to the cage again. It’s a work in progress but I love my kiwi

You are so sweet to rescue your budgie! After about half a year I finally can make our female rescue step up but not for too long at a time! She was absolutely afraid of hands. Now I can hand feed and pet her front feathers too. It will take some time... They are sooooo smart and will know you are there to support them and not harm! All the best!!
They do take a while to come out of their shell, they are skittish little feather butts.. they really hate change too! Leo is just now fully comfortable flying in all the rooms to explore.

He was the last one of my original 4 budgies that I rescued from a pet shop- a few years ago I went in to a pet shop with my Dad to buy some stuff for my baby jackdaw, saw these 4 poor little budgies crammed into what looked like a small hamster cage with no food, water or toys & the cage was absolutely filthy. My Dad saw me looking at the budgies & asked how much they were. The woman said they were £30 each & asked which one I wanted- I just looked at my Dad & he said "We'll take all 4 please"- he knew I wasn't leaving without those poor little budgies. So I took them home & gave them a lovely great big cage filled with all the food, water, toys & stuff that they would ever want & gave them all the love they deserved to make up for how they were treated in that pet shop. But yeah, now they have all passed on sadly but at least they had a good life. I still have 2 younger budgies called Pizza & Parsnip plus all of my other little birds. But I miss my older budgies so much. Hope you are ok 💙

It takes them awhile to come out of their shell and show their personalities. Start saying phrases, you may be able to get them to speak. Play some of Leo's videos, they will start chirping. 😊
my budgie also speaks.. like here's a hack if u want your budgie to learn something to speak.. first of all record a word you want to teach him.. start by a small word.. it will be easy for him .. you can start with "hello" "mommy" ... then record it.. after that you can play it as many time as you can so it will get fitted inside of the budgie's head.. after 2-3 days i am sure he'll start speaking a lil bit
Typically females will not learn to speak but a word or two, males are known for their vocabulary. He trying to say phrases over and over and you'll get your boy to talk clearer.
I understand that budgies are the smartest creatures on the planet... This makes sense because two of my best professors (chemistry and physics) at Stanford were budgies!
Just keep repeating the same phrases they'll eventually pick it up. It certainly helps to only have one budgie to start with but I'm sure you could do it with multiple
