This is possibly the most straight forward and easy to understand explanation of this. Thanks so much. :)

I don't think they hold much weight, and I heard SCOTUS doesn't even read them , they give them to law clerks to look through and pick out anything they might think is important. I don't think that system gives an amicus brief much power at all

Amanda Jones I didn't say "the Court does not find them important.". Read what I wrote again because you obviously missed what I said.
The Justices DO NOT read all of these briefs. They delegate the task to their law clerks, instructing them to select what they deem to be important and then that information is passed on to the Justice.
My comment is not false if you read it correctly, and your comment to me was unnecessary and rude. Apart from giving accurate information, I also stated my OPINION.
      I stand by what I said .

atheistexchristian I was not intending to be rude or antagonistic, I was simply stating that it is false to say that SCOTUS does not read the briefs. It is true that most times law clerks are the ones tasked with briefing the important points of the amicus and giving it to the justices, but that does mean that the justices do not read ANY of the amicus briefs and it also does not negate the power of the brief itself. Also, from your comment, you say that the system of clerks picking through amicus briefs and presenting them to justices lessens the power of the brief. While you may hold this opinion, i would remind you that justices do not read cases brought before them most times either. They rely on clerks to write briefs of all the cases petitioning for cert and then they make their decision as to which cases the Court will hear. So I am confused as to why you think that the clerks looking at amicus briefs would lessen their impact? Again, not being confrontational just engaging you in this marketplace of ideas.
