  • When to Harvest Your Onions
Onions are one of my favorite garden crops. Knowing when to harvest onions is a pretty simple process. This post and accompanying video will tell you all you need to know.
The reason we love growing our own onions so much is because it is one of the crops that we can grow 100% of our families needs! Know when to harvest onions is really not hard, but there is a bit of a trick to it.

Thanks for the great tips on Onions. You are the only person that leaves their Onions in the ground after the tops have fallen over. I really like this ideal so they will continue to size up. Lots of folks talk about the onions rotting if left in the ground. I think this is because they can't stop watering their beds because they still have other veggies right next to the onions. Do you stop watering your single onion devoted bed once the tops fall over? I assume you must not have rain as well will the onions are still in the ground after the tops fall over. Appreciate any advice you might have. Thank you again. John

I live in zone 9 and can't think of any 45 degree areas to store my onions other than the fridge.

Same. Here in the desert it rarely goes below 70 degrees at night and is usually 90-110 during the day 😬

So helpful. Thanks. Can you cut the tops off earlier for green onions?

Yes you can, but if you do it will affect the size of the bulbs. If you cut them all off the bulb will stop growing.

Thank you for this information. I am growing my onions for the first time ever. There are big onions in my raise beds. I will follow this information as per video. It is definitely how to store it.

@@StoneyAcresGardening Do you use seeds when you want to plant onions? Where do you get them? Or do you just replant the bottoms?

@@DalV I usually buy them as seedlings. Much easier that way. I get them from a company called Dixiondale Farms.
If you want to grow them from seed then you need to start them indoors, most likely sometime in January so that they are ready to go out in your garden when spring arrives and the ground can be worked.
Planting using "just the bottoms" will not get you full-sized bulbs, just green onions.
