3 Ways to Plant Onions

  • Here’s a quick tip on planting onions this spring.
    Seeds take too long for most of us to plant directly in the garden.
    Sets are great, but they are more prone to going to seed and produce smaller bulbs.
    Seedlings usually produce the biggest and longest-lasting onions and are my favorite way to plant. I love Dixondale Farms to buy my starts!

    Thank you for this information! Few questions-
    First- are seedlings what are planted indoors super early or are they something completely different? If they are- how early do you want to plant them indoors? Second- where is your go to place to buy seedlings?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  2 роки тому

      Yes, you would start them indoors really early. Our last frost is May 15th. We plant indoors about January 15th and move outdoors around April 1st.
      We get ours from Dixondale Farms, we do a bulk order with a bunch of other local gardeners to get the cost down.

      Awesome! Thank you! Is there a way I can get on that list for the bulk buy? I don’t live too far from you. (Took your online year around gardening class last fall)

      @@krystlecordingley9559 I'm sorry, we have already done it for this year. The onions just arrived a couple of days ago. But you are welcome to contact me next spring, we usually order in Mid-March. The last time I was in the Riverton IFA they still had onion seedlings and for a decent price. That was a couple of weeks ago, but you could try there.

      Wish I had known about sets not being as easy to get big. Will try seeds very early next year.

    My mom just put the root part of the onion in a cup of water after she used the main part of the onion up. Now there is just about 6 “shoots/chives” growing out of them. Can you start like this too? And do I plant that one whole onion she started or separate the shoots and plant them separately?

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  2 роки тому +2

      Unfortunately no. That sprouting response is the plants last desperate attempt to reproduce. That is a great way to get green onions but they won't convert into bulbing onions. The roots are putting up those stalks in order to try and grow a flower and produce new seed. Totally different than the seedlings I showed.

      Yes either grow indoors or bought from a nursery. It is very hard to direct seed onions in the garden in most areas.

    I planted seeds and they survived the Artic blast, do I remove once they’ve bulbed and replant in Spring

      @StoneyAcresGardening  Рік тому +1

      Yes pull them out after they have bulbed and the tops have fallen over. Then you can replant.

      What zone are you in? I am in 6a and want to plant some onion scraps now. But then realized I may be too late. Our winters get very cold as well, with lots of snow. I’d love to hear what time of year you started yours and how you did it. Also any suggestions on keeping them warm?? 😊😊

    • @StoneyAcresGardening

      When are you planting? I've been growing onions from starts for 12 years now and in that time I have had maybe 2 or 3 plants flower, and I plant 100's per year. I plant mine really early, like 6 weeks before our last frost date.

      @@StoneyAcresGardening I use the Michigan State agricultural plant chart. I buy my seed set and seeds from De Bruyn Seed in Zeeland MI. It’s old school. The old man like helping people get the most out of their plants.
