  • Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)
We thought it would be fun for Coby to watch Indiana Jones in chronological order, which is basically just reversing Temple of Doom with Raiders of the Lost Ark but ultimately the films were made so close together it's hard to tell the difference in Harrison Ford's age. We can imagine Short Round is in boarding school getting an education so he can show up later in the Short Round Disney+ series.

I know you're doing these in 'timeline order', but one of the reasons that its worth seeing this one first is that buildup to Indy's introduction. It assumes off the bat you've never seen or heard of Indiana Jones before (his name wasnt even in the original title).. that's why it keeps him shrouded in mystery til he whips the gun out of that guys hand. Then theres that reveal. Then it perfectly establishes all the tropes that would be seen in the other films, and introduces the school setting, which isnt even in Doom...and it shows you that hes a professor who moonlights as a treasure hunter.

The Ark is not evil power (look up the Old Testament stories). The Ark was the dwelling place of God among the Hebrews. What was contained inside were the Ten Commandments, among other things, as explained by Indy at the beginning of the film.

      * They think they may have found the historical Moses. He was a man by the name of *Senenmut.* He was the High Steward for Thutmosis II and for Hatshepsut(daughter of Thutmosis I, and the princess who drew Moses out of the ark basket made of papyrus reeds. Which is interesting because reeds, and another ark came into play later). It is possible that "Moses" was Senenmut's throne name, and Senenmut was his personal name. His throne name would've been "Thutmosis", but he did not worship "Thoth".
      * So he would've dropped the "Thut" part of the name, leaving only "Mosis". He instead worshipped the same god as "Yuya"(the powerful Courtier and King's Lieutenant of Amenhotep III), which was the god known as "Yahweh", "El", "Elohim", "El Shaddai" or "Adonai". This is why the last 2 letters of Yu's name is "Ya"(as in "Yahweh"). Senenmut would've only ruled when Hatshepsut was pharaoh, and only during times when she was feeling to ill to carry out her responsibilities. It is believed that Thutmosis III was the pharaoh of the Exodus.
      * The volcano of the island of Santorini is believed to have violently erupted between 1458 BC - 1425 BC, causing the 10 biblical plagues(which can all be explained now with the volcano theory, but how did Moses know precisely when the effects of the volcano would take place, where, and precisley what they would be, in what order? He was told.....by someone. God, presumably). They have also found archaeological evidence for the "real" Mt. Sinai, actually being located in Saudi Arabia. A mountain called "Jabal al-Lawz".
      * They discovered that there were 2 crossings of the Red Sea(so to speak). There was the first crossing at "The Sea of Reeds"(Yam Suph), better know as "Lake El Balah" north of the Gulf of Suez. They found the actual route Moses took across the Sinai Peninsula to the "Wadi Watir" and the "Nuweibaa Beach" where the 2nd crossing of the Red Sea took place across the Gulf of Aqaba to Saudi Arabia. Back in those day they were not called the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba. They were simply considered to be a part of the Red Sea.
      * They also found the oasis with the 70 palm trees and the 12 wells. They also found the split rock, the cave of Elijah(on the side of Jabal al-Lawz), the altars, the pillars, the stables, a dried up river, the mass grave and more. It has been said that the Ark of the Covenant's basic design vaguely resembles an electric capacitor, and that its dimensions would allow it to fit very nicely into the king's sarcophagus in the king's chamber of the great pyramid. They may have known that the great pyramid was a power plant of some kind, and placing the ark in the sarcophagus of the king's chamber might have assisted in some way in helping them to get the pyramid to function once again, but may have been abandoned the attempt when they realized how much effort, and how many things they would need to accomplish this, not even knowing whether it would work after all of that effort.
      * It is believed that pharaoh "Khufu" attempted to renovate the great pyramid(from 2566 BC - 2589 BC) in an effort to get it to function once again, strongly implying that he did not build it. It is now believed that it was probably built around 10500 BC(if not earlier). It is believed that for all these long millennia, the original Ark of the Covenant is most likely located behind a wall, in an ancient cistern beneath the Temple Mount adjacent to the Western Wall(Wailing Wall) in Jerusalem, but no one dare excavate that wall, or it would literally start a religious war that would explode into mass killings, shootings, bombings, and in the end, the ark would probably be destroyed anyways in all of that violence and mayhem. All in the name of religion. How nice.

@@monsterlair * I just think that these discoveries, theories and hypotheses should be investigated further. I think they should look into the possibility that Senenmut was the historical Moses. I think they should also investigate whether Thutmosis III was, in fact, the pharaoh of the Exodus. One of the reasons why there's so much debate over where the Red Sea crossing was, is because there was 2 crossings. At the Sea of Reeds where they crossed from Egypt onto the Sinai Peninsula(north of the Gulf of Suez), and again when they crossed from the Sinai Peninsula to Saudi Arabia.
      * As it turns out, the worship of the golden calf, was the worshipping of a god called "Ba'al"(as in "Ba'al Zebub" The Lord of Flies). He was one of "El's" children. Just like Yahweh was one of "El's" children. Don't worry, Yahweh is not the name of God. Christians and Jews both agree that God's name is "Jehovah". Don't believe me? Ask 'em. It's possible that Jehovah and El are one and the same. I think the ark would've been found, and presented to the world if it wasn't such a sensitive subject.
      * If archaeologists would be permitted to excavate where they *should* be excavating for the ark, it would be found, but if they excavate in the correct location, it will most likely trigger a religious war, where countless people would be killed in the name of religion by the time everything is said and done. I think that's why the ark hasn't been found or presented to the world yet. There's still too many ignorant people running around who are willing to *kill* for their religion.

What a wonderful reaction. I’ve never seen a reactor watch the movies in the order you did. I saw them in the theaters when they were first released. To me, this movie will always be called just Raiders of the Lost Ark. The “Indiana Jones and the” was added after the sequels came out. This movie was an homage to the early serial cliffhangers of the 1920s and 30s. Episodes were released in the theaters weekly and each episode had the hero facing certain death, and you’d have to go back to the theater the following week to see how he got out of it.
A little trivia: the call letters on the seaplane at the beginning were OB-CPO.
Images of C-3PO and R2-D2 appear in the hieroglyphs on a wall in the Well of Souls.
The scene where Indy shoots the swordsman was originally supposed to have a big fight but Indy, along with most of the rest of the cast and crew had contracted dysentery and Harrison Ford couldn’t stand for more than a few minutes at a time. They tried shooting the fight but couldn’t make it work, so they changed it, and an iconic scene was born.
Being a huge Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford fan, this is one of my favorite movies. Just my opinion, but I think Temple of Doom was the worst of the series so far. I didn’t think the plot or the writing were very good. The Last Crusade is just as good as this one, plus it costars Sean Connery. A lot of fans hate the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but I didn’t think it was that bad, even though it costars Shia LaBeouf.

I know this was a while ago and you might not look back at these older comments, but I wanted to tell you about Indy shooting the swordman. He was really sick when they filmed that and was supposed to have a long drawn out fight where I believe he used the whip against the sword man. Because he was so sick (I think he had a fever of like 104 or something) he asked if he could just shoot him. It's such an iconic scene. But it gets better:
In Temple of Doom there was a callback to this. Near the end before getting on the bridge (or maybe when he was on it) there is another great sword scene and the music from Raiders plays in the background. Indy reached for his gun but he had lost it earlier so it didn't work out that time. You probably saw the scene but didn't realize the significance or why there was suddenly a new theme briefly playing in the background.

John Rhys-Davies (Sallah) and Denholm Elliott (Brody) both were very established UK character actors in movies when Raiders was released. Elliott was seen by more movie-goers in the 3rd Indy movie, and especially with supporting roles in two very different 1980s films, Trading Places (Eddie Murphy, Dan Ackroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis, etc), and A Room With A View (a Merchant-Ivory production, also starring Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Daniel Day-Lewis, Helena Bonham Carter, etc). He had a strong background on the British stage, too. As for Rhys-Davies, aside from 2 Indy movies, and several James Bond films, he may be best known for The Lord of the Rings franchise (Gimli), and he has been in a huge number of movies and TV shows.

We saw Marion in Tibet doing the shots challenge against a larger opponent and she more than held her own, so it' reasonable to presume that she put on an act to play drunk in drinking a couple bottles of wine with Belloq--we know that she has the tolerance. I always liked the cross-universe commonality of Han Solo and Indy not believing in the "magic or hocus pocus" of the Force or the Lost Ark. Also note that the Nazi force didn't forget to pack the processional staves and flags for when they walk the Ark through the valley to the place where they open it up--they thought of everything (almost).

I was 16 when this came out and saw it in the theater then, and I'll be honest, I don't remember my reactions and feelings (because, you know, 16). It was re-released in '88 or '89 to prep people for The Last Crusade. This is by far my favorite of the movies, but I love them all. We went this past Sunday night to see one of the Fathom Events screenings and it was a spectacular print (if you saw it in a theater that has good projection and sound, which I did - shout out to Regal theater in Trussville, Alabama!) and it was so great. I have seen this SO many times and I am invested every single time. SO many of the things that people take for granted as normal character stuff in 80s action films all was prompted by this (even though this is straight up homage and copy of a bunch of 30s to 50s movie tropes).
I find this to be a perfect movie. The setups, performances, cinematography, music... everything fits together like a perfectly beautiful jigsaw puzzle. The more you watch it, the better it gets because you see the craft and care and passion for telling this story. BUT... what makes this work is the -efficiency- of not only the storytelling but the film-making. The studio didn't trust Spielberg very much because he had gone over budget and over schedule so hard on Jaws and Close Encounters, AND with 1941 which flopped terribly. So they only gave them twenty million something to make this and Spielberg set out specifically to make a movie on time and on budget, and he delivered both under budget and ahead of schedule. They did as few takes as they could get away with in this movie. There's just a fire in the soul of this movie that shows when it's on the screen.

It appears you have fallen into the blockbuster trap. This is a very fast paced movie and you have to pay attention and remember what was said and know what is being improvised in the movie. I know you are starting to get it right in some places but sometimes in order to understand it you have to watch it again so you can see the pieces you missed that is the danger of certain movies if you don’t remember things on the first try you have to watch it again and again ( for me I had to watch it at least three times before I understood it) but sometimes if you can reading the movie book helps you or the novel if there is one. Then when you rewatch it you will really understand and enjoy the film a lot better
Just a simple piece of advice but this is a movie that you just should enjoy suspend disbelief and just have fun and ASK QUESTIONS LATER!

The ornate vessel made of gold is the actual Ark, and the 10 Commandments were kept inside, 2 stone tablets with 5 Commandments carved on to each one. So while the Ark technically wasn't anything special on it's own, the stone tablets were and that's what the Nazis hoped to find. So as the viewer, we don't know if they were taken at some point, lost to time, or just crumbled due to age, but what happened at the end was what was shown in the picture from the Bible and was the power of God.

There was even a certain group of priests who could handle carrying the Ark and when one of them touched the Ark when it was about to fall over, that priest died.

Watching them in chronological order isn't a bad idea actually, as I wouldn't recommend that for a lot of films, but it for sure works here. The only real issue I see, is how much darker Temple of Doom was in comparison to Raiders and the other films. The character feel and action are the same throughout, so if this was an episodic serial from the 30's, things fit together pretty well.
