Because the background was solid white, you could have copied the layer, then used the magic wand to select the white in the copied layer and delete it leaving just the hair on that layer which you could have then altered without affecting the white background on the lower layer.
I tried this with a picture of solid black hair. Wanted to lighten it but it didn't work. It just looks like I painted over it. Is it because it's solid black? Is there anything else that can be done?

can you make a tutorial like that in krita? if u don't use krita, krita is a painting software , photo editor, and animation program just like photoshop and krita is completely free 100%
Make the hair monochrome (black and white) and then use a pallete and colour it. (basically make it monochrome then look at a tutorial on how to colour black and white images)
