  • Pond filtration is very important and pond pressure filters are good filters but they just aren't made fit all pond types. Pond pressure filters are simply too small and overrated for the amount of water that they can actually handle...
    This video is about why the size of pond pressure filters lets them down...

    I'm on my third pressure filter in three and a bit years. The first one, an online shop own brand, came with the house and I blew the UV due to having no clue what I was doing. I bought the second, a different own brand, and I was never convinced the UV worked and it was a PAIN to replace the lamp. The clasp was also really difficult and my pond vitually emptied over one night (fish all survived and it was a good opportunity to clean out the gunge!). I did my research next time, bought bigger again and went for a Laguna Pressure Flo. I finally saw the bottom of the pond for the first time late summer last year, not long after I installed it. UV lamp is easy to change and the hose attachements are SOOOOO easy. It's also easy to see when the top is locked in place. My learning from this is that cheap really isn't economical when it comes to pressure filters.

    Thank you for this video. I have a Blagdon Clean Pond Machjne for a 3,000 litre (660 gallon) pond and works well. I chose the large version and as you say, the box says over 75cm deep in shade and no fish will be sufficient for 13,000 litres. I chose this one because with over 75cm deep, in full sun and with fish says can handle 4,875 litres (1,072 gallons). However as I now inherited a few koi as well as having some of my own, I now need to upgrade to a larger one so I can have excellent results, not just working well. Really appreciate your videos which give a balanced view. Keep up the great work.

      I’m thinking of upgrading to a pressure filter for my 175 gallon pond but not sure what brand or size to get. I’ve heard Bermuda is a good brand. I usually stick to a rule of 100litres per fish so I’ve got 7 fish in nearly 800 litres. Got told if I had a really good set up could be more flexible with the stocking ratio. Very informative video

    I have only just come upon your videos and am rather pleased that I did. Not sure if you can help us but we have an LPG/ wood fired hot tub made of polyethylene that holds 800 L aprox 180 gal water height being aprox 80cmand when not in use it has a lid that fully covers the tub - we would love to get some type of filter so that we don't have to waste our water too often by having to emptying the tub frequently. I have tried most pool/ spa stores but have had no luck and they are not very interested in helping so I was thinking of using a pond system - so far our options could be the Oase Filtral 1500 UVC ,(NZ$522) or the Jabao LPH Pond Fountain pump (NZ$196) or using a PondMax Evo Series pond pump (EVO II NZ$285) or smaller combined with a pressurized filter not sure which one LOL. I would expect that we would need the water to cool down first before using any type of filtration system. We were thinking of using the tub as a water feature with a fountain when not in use during the off season. Your input would be much appreciated. Cheers Glenn from NZ.

    Great advice thanks 👍… I use a 9000 pressure filter as a pre-filter for a large 3 bay filter on my 7000 litre pond with Koi and they work well together. I just flush the pressure filter and the first bay now and again and rarely ever flush the last 2 bays.

    I want to buy a filter for keeping my pond clean as of yet i dont have fish (may add some cold water but no KOI) its a feature pond in the middle of the lawn sunk into the floor full sun, I have no where to hide the boxs within 2.5 meteres which filter/pump would work best for 4500 litres a box or pressured and how do i make reach?

    Thank you for this. Will a heavily planted pond assist in the draw back of the pressure filter? Both my pond run pressure filters, but both well planted.

    • @thep0ndman
      @thep0ndman  8 місяців тому +1

      Yes it will to a point a lot of the debris ge caught in the plants so it doesn’t all make it to the filter. But we like planted ponds more natural the better good health advantages and keeps nitrates and phosphates down

    A decade ago, I installed a similar unit on a small pond. At first, it did a good job, eventually, the filter clogged, imploded and busted. I recovered filter media beads during many years in my pond.

    Hi I have a small pond with a pontec 10000 plus T Series pump. It pumps too fast so I have a flow valve on the OUT. Would it be better fitted to the IN? I'm thinking it's sucking up every too quickly and dumping it in the filter to then slowly be sent to the waterfall. I need the valve because the waterfall is spitting it out too fast over on to the rocks (leak)

      I have been investigating this one for about 4 weeks or so. The biological and mechanical actions look good as well as the 18W UV and no doubt that the sponges are easy to clean with the handle. The handle on the Blagdon Clean Pond machine is starting to leak on mine unless I place it in an exact spot on the turn. Will continue to look at my options and appreciate your comment.

      So, it must be filled with fishes. And in this case a pressure filter is not the best option. Skimmer and sieve filter as first stage makes miracles

    Hi
    im currently running an oase screenmatic 90000 in a 12500 l pond but now looking to add a bakki shower would these pressure filters be ok to run one of these as im guessing this would be doing half the work because of the screenmatic working alongside it,i would have loved to use the screenmatic as a prefilter but i cant achieve it,the pond is pump fed to the screenmatic,i hope this makes sense
    many thanks great vid.

    • @ninabailey5208
      @ninabailey5208 3 місяці тому

      sorry i should add that i really want a waterfall in the pond to introduce natural oxygen with surface movement rather then just relying on air stones so bakki shower would give me that plus the benefit of added filtration,im just a bit confused about how to set it up 😫

    Thanks for the video. If I’ve got a 175 gallon pond and would like to get an external set up any recommendations? I’ve heard Bermuda are a good brand. I tend to keep to a basic rule of 100 litres per fish but I’ve been advised that I could keep more if I get an external set up? At the moment I’ve got 7 fish biggest one is about 8 inches which is a shubunkin.

      Hi the rules abit silly. We did a video on how to calculate the correct size filter for your pond on the channel. Basically go as big as you can afford

    • @lukehaycock93
      @lukehaycock93 4 місяці тому

      @@thep0ndman ah ok that’s interesting thanks so if you have superb filtration set up then you can be more relaxed with stocking levels? I always hear people argue about correct stocking levels. I’ll certainly consider going as big as I can afford. Thanks

    Ive aquired 3 or 4 pressure filters over the years. I still use 3 of them as pre filters for two oase filtomatic filters. I dont use the sponges on the pressure filters but ive filled them with Warden commercial bio balls.( Aquadabra sale them now as Aquateck. ) I use the back wash system to clean them The Filtomatic filters are supposedly an all singing all dancing filter system, but in my opinionion there is a lack of biological filtration, so thats why i converted the pressure filters. It works for me

    Hi Darren, thanks for this video. I'm a Brit living in Indonesia, have just moved house and acquired an empty 8000 litre pool. We've put a few goldfish in it but I want to try keeping a few koi so your videos are proving useful.
    Bearing in mind what you said about pressure filter capacity I'm thinking of getting a 30,000 litre model and a 10,000 or 12,000 liter per hour submersible pump (total head is only 2m). How does that sound?
    I'm thinking 1.5 inch or 2 inch piping but not sure how to calculate which would be best.

    • @thep0ndman
      @thep0ndman  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes that will work fine. It’s more an issue when people add 30 koi and feed 5 times a days. Goldfish do not produce that much waste and people don’t tend to over feed either so it will work well. A few plants added will work wonders too, just ensure you plant them properly, we did a video about that too cheers

      @thep0ndman Thanks for getting back to me. Not just goldfish but a dozen or so smallish koi for starters. I'll take a look at your video about plants. One of the advantages about being in Indonesia is the variety of plants available

    In my opinion, the most efficient electricity is a gravity filter with a slight difference in the height of the sump chamber water and pool water, However, this will take up more space

    Our pond is about 800+ L. Just bought one of these oase 12000 filtoclear + 5500 Aquamax pump and I thought it's going to be over kill. I would hope recycling the water that more than 3 times an hour via three tiers, should be more than enough to clean and oxygenate properly

      Should be ok always keep fish stock levels low, don’t over feed, keep plants and everything will look after itself

    It's common knowledge with any pressure filter that whatever the litre says on the box that is only based on an empty pond soon as you add fish specially koi that is halved because koi produce alot more waste that keeping goldfish
