    I've just moved house leaving behind a pond I've spent over £20.000 on. I've had many years of happy successful koi keeping and enjoyed every moment. HOWEVER. my new house I've just moved into I've already dug my natural pond. I'm on clay and the pond is 10mx 10m and 6ft deep with just clay to hold the water in. Everything I'm doing is natural and this video has endorsed my thinking. I've bought all sorts of water plants and happy for the water not to be clear, just healthy. I'll be moving my 10 very large koi over once it's established enough and with just an air pump in the middle I believe I will enjoy this pond just as much, probably even more because of the wild life it will attract. I hope to post some video soon.

    The benefits of this system would be not having unsightly Flexi pipe inside your pond and the pump would be easier to access inside the pump chamber. Lots of people build raised ponds so their filter system is also above ground. Personally I'd stick some filter brushes in the pump chamber as they tend not to get clogged and will trap big things like leaves, twigs and blanket weed 👌

    How do you solve the pipe blockage? Recently i had an issue: fishes had swept the gravel in the bottom drain and the pump was running dry, even as the pump basin was the same depth as the bottom of the pond. Still, in my country, pond is a luxury and who can afford it can pay for a large filter room. I use a huge sedimentation pre filter, gravitational seeve filters, everything under ground, concrete walls and all the bells and whistles. If there is a possibility, I connect the bottom drain to the drains so time to time i can open the tap for one minute to clean the pipes

      I would have a bottom drain with gravel. I would just have pumps in the pond or no gravel.

    • @orlovszki
      @orlovszki 4 дні тому

      @@oliverskinner8962 i put gravel only around the edge, first step, bordered with a row of stones, so gravel should never fall to the bottom. Except the fishes, somehow, can manege to stir up everything, and some of the gravel, and other silt goes to the bottom. However there is a nice adaptor for pressure washer, to clean up the pipes.

    Great advice as always. I have a pump fed system straight to a bio force revolution as a pre filter and then to a 3 bay filter with brushes, flocor and matting. To clean I just spin the revolution handle a few times and shake the brushes and drain the first bay. Works brilliant and had no filtration issues for years 👍

    i agree, save your money on the pond vac 5 as another pond renovation pro. if you want to discharge over a fence or wherever you want to pump it to. Purchase a simple fold-away platform. Sit the pond vac 4 on the platform. Where the water comes directly out of the pond vac ( no discharge pipe ) stick a large black rubble tub with a cheapish sump pump that can handle heavy sediments on a length of fold away inch and a quarter hose to wherever you want the muck to go. Set the float valve on the sump pump to activate as the tub fills. this will act the same way as the Pond vac 5 does at a fraction of the price. The platform also works well if using the discharge pipe, as raising the vac off the floor gives a better continuous running as the fall of water against gravity stops the internal float valves from sticking as often, as mentioned in your video. Great info vid mate.

    You shouldn't pressure wash it to clean it, that will create damage. You would use a light spray of bleach:water mix leave it on for 30seconds-10mins then hose it off with a light pressure hose (not jet wash). The same way that patio cleaners / external cleaners use sodium hypochlorite (bleach) to treat paths, driveways, brick walls etc. Wet any surrounding plants or grass really well first, then mist, then up to 10mins later rinse off, and rinse really well in a direction away from grass if you can. Watch some patio cleaning videos and you'll see this "soft wash" technique.

    I live in North Dakota and we reached -63F last year. It doesn't last all winter, but it can easily stay that cold for a week. Typically, we sit around -20 during our coldest months. I just got my 1st Koi pond going this past month and decided we will keep them in a stock tank in our heated garage. I'm too paranoid try using a floating heater and such. Too many variables since we sometimes lose power too. My question though, is there a good method of clearing out the pipe that is between the skimmer and the waterfall? I made a small trench for it and covered it with dirt but it's not deep and would easily freeze. I will remove the pump too but if the skimmer is empty, can I leave that in the ground? My pond is about 800 gallons and 8ftx12ft. 3/4 of the tank is 2ft deep and 1/3 is 4ft deep.

    I am an experienced pond keeper and feel that the pond you describe is perfectly possible, however, summer can be a problem with lack of oxygen, as evidenced by mass fish deaths in natural water bodies. As far as letting nature take some fish what you suggest, again is feasible with herons etc, but will not protect you from otters which are an increasing issue, particularly here in Yorkshire. If you are unlucky enough to have an otter attack it will kill ALL of your fish both large and small, frustratingly they do not eat all they catch, they are similar to a fox in a hen house and kill indiscriminately.

    I appreciate your thoughts about filter bacteria starter but what you've been saying is pure common sense about aerobic bacteria, but you forgot to show us proof that those bacteria are not alive because there is no oxygen in sealed bottle... did you check it thru microscope to prove your theory? how about those scientist who studied and dedicate their life to produce this nitrifying bacteria? What your video is pure opinion and no basis... and I completely dissagree about using hardy fish to cycle tank.. which for me is unethical because those fish have life too... what are you gonna do with those fish if they survive during cycle undamage? leave it to scientist who study and did a lot of research in producing nitrifying bacteria to help us do fishless cycle (More ethical) my opinion is clear... you are wrong in every angle unless you show us proof and not opinion. give you one simple example... if scientist can produce a live virus in a vial to be use as vaccine and its very effective... don't you think its also possibe for them to produce live nitrifying bacteria in a bottle?

    Koi UA-camrs and their symbiotic relationship with their “favourite dealers” have pushed prices of everything through the roof and the artificial need for the latest gizmo. New people that want to have a koi pond are made to think they must have a fibreglass lined concrete tank with windows and 5 grands worth of filtration. When there are much cheaper and nicer looking alternatives, one of my pet hates is the lack of gravel, rocks and stones on the bottom of ponds, all my fish rummage around looking for food. If you watch fish in a bare tank with lots of flow they just swim around without purpose.

Fish have been around millions of years before us and are very adaptable to the environments . we just need to understand the basics , keep it simple and stop pulling them out of the pond every five minutes to scrape them, putting this treatment in that treatment in and overdosing x5 times because somebody told you that they all ways do x5 times what the dose rate is on the bottle and there fish are totally fine 😂.

    I am a pond keeper of 50+ years experience and agree that a fully natural pond is perfectly feasible as you say. However there can be some downsides to a system like the one you describe. Goldfish in particular will breed readily and quickly overpopulate a small pond leading to a lack of available natural food, low oxygen levels and higher ammonia & nitrates. The pond keeper would have to intervene which normally means manual removal and euthanasia. Not everyone's cup of tea. A heavily planted pond means you will rarely see your fish. In a 'standard' pond, where you are feeding the fish regularly, the fish associate you with food and come to the surface readily. If you are not feeding them they will act like wild fish and hide when you go to the pond. Species like Tench, Crucian Carp, Roach and Rudd etc will become invisible once in the pond and therefore a bit pointless to keep for ornamental reasons. Larger fish species are not suitable for this set up unless it is very large and very lightly stocked as you alluded too. Koi, Ghost, Mirror, Common or Grass Carp etc grow very quickly and eat vast quantities of food thus producing large amounts of waste. Even 4 in a 1000 gallon pond would soon clear the pond of natural food before reaching 12" or so. Location is very important. Do not create the pond where it is exposed to full sunlight. A pond without any water movement will very quickly rise in temperature in prolonged sunlight. This can cause low oxygen levels even with lots of oxygenating plants which will affect the fish. Finally I would have to say that in fish pond terms there is no such thing as a zero maintenance pond. People should always expect to have to get wet & dirty if they want to keep a pond at it's best. As you rightly say plants need cutting back, leaves need removing, sludge will build up from fish waste, plant waste, sediment from rainwater run-off, even atmospheric dust will accumulate in the pond which will occasionally need removing. I only mention these things as a cautionary note to those thinking of starting a pond like you describe. My first pond, back in the early 70's, was a very similar set-up and I encountered the issues I mentioned plus a few more. Great video. 👍👍
