"Was ist des Deutschen Vaterland" or "Des Deutschen Vaterland" is a German patriotic song. The song was first performed in 1814. It called for a greater German nation of all German speaking countries under one state. It was made to stand for German unification. Germany unified in 1871. 10 years after the unification of Italy in 1861. Before unification, Germany consisted of many other German speaking states/nations. There were ideas of nations like Austria, Switserland, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein joining in the German unification, but they never did due to every one of those nations having their own complications. I suggest doing some research about these complications and why these nations never joined in on German unification. It's quite interesting!
-The maps:
I spend hours making all these maps, only to realise this version of the song misses out on a lot of verses. The original song is way longer with more verses explaining what areas would be part of a German nation, Like pommerania, Austria, Switserland or the independent states on the German coast for example. Having spend so much time on these maps I refused to not include them. So after improvising a bit, this is the result. Hope you like it!

This is a very rare record! This version of the song has never been shown anywhere on the internet before. It is as far as I know the first vocal recording of this song. This particular recording is from 1916 and was sang by Carl Schlegel.

It has surprisingly high audio quality for 1916, and nice mapping.

To the people wondering why all of Cislethania is in the map: When the song was first written in the 19th century, it contained lyrics like "Is it Austria with all its might and victories?" So I decided to add all of Cislethania to the map. I made the maps prior to hearing the song because I was so excited and used the original 19th century lyrics as a reference, not knowing my record wouldn't mention a lot of these areas like Switserland, Tirol or Cislethania for instance. Having spend more then 5 hours on those maps, I refused to not include them. Regardless, I think it still turned out to be a very nice video!

Fair, but there is no conceivable way to consider Krakow, Czechia, Galicia and Ruthenia as German, would be the main point.

@mroatmanIV where? It doesn't directly say "ist österreich" but it mentions regions. I may be wrong but I didnt see Austria being mentioned directly (even tho the map did)
@@cortexradio It does not say Austria directly, but indirectly by saying "As far as the german tongue sounds" which definitely includes Austria.
Also Austria has always been a part of a german Nation. Through out all of its history Austrians have acknowledged themselves as Germans.
The national idea of Austra on its own was created after 1945, when Austria pretended to be the first victim of Nazi Germany, which in my honest opinion is not true. Before that, they wanted to be part of Germany and they were also seen as Germans.
I would still to this day consider them German, even if a lot of Austrians dont want to hear it.

The GrossDeutschland option didn't include all Cisleithania (just Austria, Bohemia and the Littoral) and for sure not whole Switzerland
This isn't the full version of the song. This version misses some verses from the original lyrics, in where they actually do mention Switzerland and basically all of Cislethania. I made the maps before I noticed and I refused not to use them after putting so much work into it.

I'm glad you like it! Honestly I have no idea. I totally forgot where I got it from and why I didn't use the generic black and red instead. But there was probably a reason for it. If I manage to figure out why, I'll let you know lol.

I'd advice you to read the pinned comment but basically, the original first written lyrics of this song, back in the early 1800s, Mentioned areas such as Switzerland aswell. :)

Nice but you have actually some mistakes here: The Flag of swabia is red black, and the flag baden is yellow red yellow
The flag of Baden is correct. Before they had the tri-color, it was just red and Yellow. As for the Kingdom of Würtemberg: I forgot why I used that flag instead of the plane red and black. There was some reason for it though but I cannot remember. Lol

I see that you included Galicia which makes no sense but regardless, Southern Croatia was administered by Vienna.
In the original lyrics written for this song (wich I based the map on), the singer talks about areas and regions like Austria with all its riches and Victories, wich made me decide to add all of Cislethania. As for the Dalmatian Coast, I didn't add it because it would spread out the entire map too much.

Czechia/Bohemia was part of the German Confederation because it was mainly German speaking. Meanwhile Moravia was defenetly not German speaking but also in the German confedaration as well as Galacia and Loredam

How can I make these maps?
It took me a lot of time and practice on photoshop to be able to make maps like this. I advice watching some starter tutorials on how to use photoshop if you're interested in making maps like these🙃

U know it's not nazi germany right? This is a pre german empire song. Considering the autonomy the narions had that joined the German empire, you would've probably be lucky and got stuck with the Austrian policies and agenda who didnt really germanise its population as much. Luckily because slovenia is such a nice country 🙃
