Im also scared of "over designing" where it just becomes cluttered and have too much going on in an effort to make it unique or something
edit: this isn't to say that a lot of details is always bad, a design can have a ton of details and still be balanced and look good, but there's also a point where a character would look better if it was more simple and may just end up looking cluttered. I'm personally a huge fan on simple but unique designs so if that's where my opinion is coming from, but if you like your character to have a ton of details, go for it!

What @Siochain Da Floof said is very true! I'd look at Sparkle Dogs, they're kind of a species, I guess? They're CRAZY, with tons of colors and markings, most of them being neon rainbows! And I still think the designs look awesome!

"over designing" can actually be really pretty. when done right, it can add a lot of life to... well, anything really. I'd recommend checking out decora kei, which is one of the many kinds of harajuku fashion, and it features very loud and cluttered design aspects that, when put together, create a very charming and interesting aesthetic. I personally feel like that's probably what sparkle dogs were based off of, but I could be wrong.

  • @Parker-nm9cg

I think a huge thing with base adopts is that young artists just starting to get into a community are *absolutely terrified* of doing it "wrong".
Usually when you first start drawing, you don't care, you do whatever you want. How many of our first characters were recolored Sonic the Hedgehog screenshots, or My Little Pony designs? Even those often had genuine lore of our own behind them, and some of that may have even carried on to our future creative projects.
But then, when you join online communities? Things get scary fast. Your old way of doing things gets _trashed_ outside of your circle. You see videos upon videos of 'art critics' finding DeviantArt pages with art that looks like yours and calling it shitty. You see rants about "mary sue" and designs that are too edgy or powerful or self-indulgent. You see pockets of certain closed or semi-closed species circles where some people lay claim to the most basic combinations of ideas (the concept of an anthro cat-dog with antlers is a great idea, but not something that could feasibly be "owned" by one person) or patrol on the behalf of popular closed species (people who see any food-based furry and think it's a sushidogs knockoff) and attack others who happen to have similar designs, and now our 13-year-old protagonist is terrified of getting copyright struck or blacklisted if they cross a line they had no way to know existed. Or they've gotten familiar with the rules of species circles, but are now sort of stuck in the idea that they have to have a defined boundary for their characters to exist in. And *god forbid* you _sell_ one of those 'stolen from a closed species' or 'Mary Sue' designs, some people would already have your head on a stake for owning it.
So when there's a neat-looking base that proudly proclaims to be free to use? That's of one specific species that's usually either open or generic, so that there's no way they can do it wrong as long as they don't experiment too much? Boundaries already defined? Hell yeah! Color that baby in, you've got yourself a 100% non-problematic fursona that doesn't steal any closed species' designs or look like a Mary Sue. And they do the same with adopts, because it's safe.
It's a problem that the community at large needs to address. Closed species and such can be incredible, but when the concept engulfs our subculture to the point where the spaces that younger people tend to find themselves in are swarmed with people trying to call them art thieves for accidentally having an idea that coincides with a "closed species" that's literally just a hybrid between two animals, it becomes problematic and damaging to the future community base's creativity.

It can be a bit weird trying to navigate how much effort goes into art and pricing said effort.
So while it's not like "evil", there's better ways to make adoptables that are more worth their price.

this yes! I'm totally fine with bland adopts, as I know they're likely just new and inexperienced artists- I myself used to make my own little bases with choppy lineart and basic colors because I didn't really know what else to do. Now I try to make new things, a catmeleon, grumpy earth dragon guardian, an atlas moth, anything that's not a normal dog- and if so a specific breed! It's SO much fun to make unique designs. Also, if I'm going to be making even close to a livable wage off my art one day I want it to be worth raising the price
Heck, my fursona came from a mystery adopt! And my second sona was from a character purge. One had different, long ears and a glowing paint like streak across their eyes. The other had a flowing space unicorn tail, if either didn't have those specific unique traits they wouldn't have been nearly as appealing to me!

Bases are good. Most of my ocs were made first on bases. They still look really unique. Its not bad to do adopts like that because the based drawing you first get is like a base in itself, you can then change up ad add to them. Eyebleed adopts look good if you do it well.

I’ve made adopts for years (back when g+ existed and had a BOOMING adoptable market.) and I do tend to use bases, but I really like using bases that are highly customizable such as the big ass furry base on DA. It always has bothered me when adopts are just very plain with basic colors and designs, so I’ve always done my best to be creative even on plain bases. Making and selling adopts should be a project of love and passion! I always put a bit of my heart and soul into adopts and I wish others did too.

I have to say, I personally do not agree. People have to start somewhere. A lot of people want to make adopts (not just for the money), but are not particularly skilled. While I definitely believe that they should be continuously working to improve their skill level, as all artists should, if they wanna use pre-made bases starting out, and all they wanna do is color them? I don't think people should be judged for that. They have to start somewhere, and I don't think they should be held back just because they don't meet a certain standard. For instance, they might be well aware that no one would want their adopts if they drew them themselves because they don't have much skill as an artist. They may not want to alter the bases they use for the same reason. At least improving their skill at coloring is some kind of artistic improvement. And hey, if they wanna try and sell those? The way I see it is, if people don't see any value in it, they won't buy it.
And then there is the other end of it. People who ARE at least somewhat skilled artists, sometimes very skilled, who still sell adopts that are just colored bases, sometimes ones they have made personally, sometimes not. Again, I don't really see a problem with this. Some people love to color, to come up with cool patterns and pallets, but designing an entire creature, whatever it may be, just isn't the fun part for them. At the end of the day, art should be a medium of enjoyment. To some degree, we all do it because we love it, and if people really enjoy coloring and designing patterns for bases, but nothing else, and they wanna do a lot of it, I don't see any reason why they shouldn't sell their work.
And one last thing to consider. If you have a species like a horse, dog, cat, or anything that most people know what it looks like, it's not usually a huge deal how unique the silhouette is. If someone is using a wolf base, for instance, the buyer of the design can then interpret it however they choose. They are really purchasing the color pallet and pattern. THAT is the part they are actually paying for. So, when they go to make up a story and identity for that character, they can also decide they want it to be tanky, with a short muzzle and shaggy fur, as well as adapt it to their style. I have purchased so called "cookie cutter adopts" myself because I really fell in love with a pattern/color pallet. And I can promise you, they don't look the same as the rest of the batch when I am actually drawing them or creating a ref.
I am not trying to say in any way that you have to like this kind of adopt, or that they should not personally annoy you. Everyone has their own pet peeves. I only hope that you might consider some of these things next time you see them, and maybe you might start to see them in a different light.

  • @josieward3367
    @josieward3367 3 роки тому +5

The point is for the design to be interesting and unique. Sometimes people see a character I (or someone else) drew and go "Wow! I love that character. I'd love to use it in my own art," and so they buy it. Since the character and designs are copyrighted, it would be illegal for them to use them without permission, which is generally granted when someone pays the artist a certain amount.
Adoptables that reuse lineart are fast and easy for the artist, so if they sell, both parties come out gaining something. The point isn't the lineart, it's the idea. Maybe a person created their own species and is selling adoptables of it with different designs. Maybe someone wants to make unique designs for a certain species. The only one of mine that ever sold was a very uniquely patterned, tiger-based chakat.
A lot of people buy adoptables because they just like the art and want to support the artist. Artists will often also reserve a "high res" copy of the adoptable for the buyer.
I, personally, also offer a discount on all of my future commissions if your request has the adopted character in it. Since it's a character I am already familiar with, it is easier and therefore cheaper. A lot of people also want random characters to draw their own with (either as a sex partner for those without mates or just as someone to draw interacting with their character).
Buying adoptables doesn't mean a person is "not creative enough to make their own." Sometimes people just fall in love with a design.

I used to be very fascinated with furry fandom in my early years, though I was very lonely furry and I didn't know any other furry in person so the passion worn out after about a year. At some point I got annoyed that furry it was all about gay etc.
I guess my brain won't be ever able to recreate the bond with my earlier fursona, but nowadays I know some nice people that are actually furries. I didn't notice it earlier, but now I see how the furry fandom is amazing and creative, and even though I do not like most furry drawing styles at 100%, I returned to drawing inspiration to create fantasy animal characters.

I once had someone ask my if they wanted an oc, and they gave me a species and name, nothing else. I built the story and then I told them about it, and because they chose the oc’s species and name.Apparently the story, the entire world and lore, belongs to them all because they said. “Have this oc! Take it!!!” It’s not okay, and if you buy, or receive an adoptable, you should always let them know, that the entire story does not completely belong to them. You should also talk about rights with the adoptable, if the adoptable is free.

I have seen many great bases from Perigrinecella (sorry if I butchered the name) and the original dragon designs by Joy Ang. but the species themselves in the series are set in stone. The only way to change them is with mutations, so how do you make an adopt with set in stone structure and design?

As someone who’s been designing ocs for over 10 years, I wouldn’t say that the examples at the beginning are bad. Often adoptables made like that have a target audience of younger furs looking to spend pocket money on new designs. I would always purchase designs like that when I was 11 and I felt SO excited when I saved up $2 to buy a new design! While it’s nice to see higher quality adoptables, I don’t think there’s ultimately any harm at all in the simple “cookie cutter” ones. Maybe the artist is only just starting out and has had limited exposure to existing designs so their own aren’t as exciting. I’m not sure, just my take! If someone is willing to pay for those adoptables, then I don’t see the issue! Supply and demand baby

Yes yes YES I agree so wholeheartedly and I'm only a minute and a half into the video. There are plenty of people out there that make base sets where you can pick and choose all the parts you want to make the adopt out of, and often they're quite cheap and yet high quality. If you put in the effort to color them well and find somewhere good to sell them, you'll earn back the price it took to buy the base set and then some!
If you can figure out the brush size and texture you can even add your own traits and such if you're feeling brave

Question: is there an excuse for this?
    Hear me out
I make adopts on Amino, DPA specifically. This is a dinosaur community. I made my bases myself. The bases are semi scientifically accurate, meaning you can’t add much on without leaving said accuracy. Occasionally if I make an adopt based of an animal I’ll add a part from that animal (ex: Quail, adds wings or feathers on a species that doesn’t have them). But mostly I keep the base the same. Is this acceptable? I also keep my prices low. 40ac (Amino Coins) is the highest I’ve ever gone, and it only goes to 40 if I really like the design.

Only things I don’t fully agree with is the silhouette part and trying to make it super unique….it is a GREAT recommendation in some cases! :) but in others, it’s bad… I’m thinking about when someone wants to try to keep the species accurate, up to the colors…like say they’re making a horse design…try to make it look like a horse, don’t turn it into a unicorn or anything like that…I guess accessories could be a way to add to the silhouette. I also personally like simpler designs cause I like to animate…the more complicated the character, the more you want to pull out your hair xD drawing that character over and over with such a complicated design…I feel like what really makes a character unique and come to life is their personality…100% that! Make the design reflect that too, really stand out! It’a what they say when doing character creation….even the idea of silhouettes, you can just glance at the character and just know “that’s the big scary guy but he’s actually a softie”
Edit: sorry if this isn’t very coherent >.> kinda become ramble-y

    • @Neffertity
      @Neffertity  2 роки тому

I understand where you're coming from, and this video is from 2019 so it's a bit outdated.
That said, the unique silhouette doesn't just apply to adding a bunch of things to a design.
Body dynamics are another great way of doing character design.
Think about Donald Duck vrs Daffy Duck.
Both are ducks, and even when you black out their shapes you can still tell which is which because of their overall shapes.

I want to start making adoptables but am nervous about it, like I'd like to use a base to start with to help put together my idea better but also as a starting point to dip my toes in (also adjusting the line art to them is a really good idea I did not have at the time as I'm still practicing anatomy I'm not ready to make full ref sheets on my own just yet). but also I want to add some original artwork of the character to the adopt purchase like a headshot that can be turned into a pfp/badge and an illustrated full-bodied/half bodied scene (to encourage me to study and do that anatomy practice in as well XD) but not sure how that would go. I might just have anxiety over it and am overthinking things but I love making new designs!

If you end up doing the same type of markings, colors, body type, features, on all of your characters, maybe try using dices. Use dices to pick random features for your characters, choose two randoms colors, then a random body type, a random facial expression, etc, and start designing with those characteristics. The idea is to make you at least start the design with elements you usually don't like, so that you try new things. During the design process, you can always change the random elements you got, but at least start with the random ones.
