    I think you hit on the key issue - walking in a safe manner. It would be wise to make a road shoe that took advantage of the larger cleats but added the necessary walking parts.
    While I love my road bike, I abhor the idiotic idea that we all have to be professionals or wannabes with footgear unsafe for walking so I chose a mountain bike shoe. On the bicycle paths, or in the downtown core, many people have slipped (some falling) while wearing road shoes.

    Congrats on the Sanic partnership. I’m not seeing that they have a presence in Vietnam, so maybe you could be a dealer/distributor for them after your move.
    I prefer MTB shoes myself, even cleat-less, on flat pedals (necessary in the stop-and-go traffic where I ride). The additional stiffness is nice, while still be able to walk around like you said.

    Thanks, I think hotspots are you either get them or you don't. I've always had issues with the stiffer road shoes than the slightly more flexible offroad ones, maybe they just allow my feet to move a little more to minimise the pressure :)

    Great news. And being a company who’s products you’ve used and enjoyed for a while now it makes it even better.
    And yes I prefer MTB pedals massively. I do still have some road shoes which I could use indoors. But outdoors the SPDs are great. And I don’t even need them to be super locked in. I use the multi-release cleats. They’re secure enough so they keep my feet comfortably in the same position for a long ride and not sliding around, but in an unforeseen situation I can get my foot out easier. Perfect for leisure riding.

    Late last year I bought a pair of Garneau shoes that are much lighter than my MB shoes.They incorporate an airflow cooling system, so I haven't used them yet -- it snowed, quite heavily, today. They take both MB and RB cleats, and with MB cleats they weigh 599 gm for the pair, as against my MB shoes which weigh 893 gm with cleats. I have to be careful with spending, so I can assure you that the Garneau shows were a really good buy. They were under CDN$100.

    Two important factors in I think you missed that make road shoes a little higher performance. The pedals themselves are lighter, you talked about the shoes but the pedals are typically as much as 100g lighter even with the high end versions this is actually a larger difference then typical shoe weight difference with the high end race stuff which wouldn’t vary in weight more then about 50g. The other big one, and this is actually a huge factor that is rarely talked about but axle stack height one MTB pedals is much higher. This makes the pedal stroke less efficient Shimano SPD SL have about 5mm lower stack.
    All a little technical I know but it’s worth noting I think. Most social riders, commuters and even some recreational road cyclist would find MTB a better practical system I think that was your take away. Probably a fair assessment too.

    There are two different types of Shimano MTB cleats, one model releases in an upwards way too, so the rider is less able to rely on pulling up the pedal... but easier to use around town... There are also cleat covers for walking in road bike cleats easier... sometimes called Cafe covers so when the roadies stop for coffee...
    I prefer MTB shoes because you can walk around in them... I once got two flat tyres at once, and had to walk the bike home the last 5 km's... wore down a pair of road cleats... I also once walked home in bare feet for about 3 km's to avoid wearing down a set of road cleats and the shoes... ended up with terrible blisters and such... MTB shoes everytime, and as they often look like 'normal' shoes (trainers or skate shoes), you can wear them off the bike too, without looking too stupid at work or in the shops, yet still have the cleats. My town bike has the dual pedals - flats on one side, cleats on the other... Road and MTB bike have the eggbeater style pedals.

    I used the original Look pedal system in the mid 80s for road bikes but for the past 30 years I use Shimano mountain SPD pedals and cleats on MTB shoes on all my bikes including road bikes. I don't want to deal with different pedal systems and shoes. If you use road shoes with exposed cleats you can put cleat covers on them when walking which protects the cleat and makes walking easier.

      I've been using Look ROAD pedals now for years but still don't feel comfortable with the unclipping process. Questions are:
      1. How much easier is it to unclip?
      2. Since the retention of the shoe is done magnetically, did you have any issues when pulling hard on the saddles, i.e. the shoe getting detached.
      3. Are they easier to walk with than the Look road pedals?

Great vid in dissecting both the pros and con's. I use to run Speedplays back in the 90's and early 2000's. I had both their Road peddles and used their Frogs for XC riding. After a few years racing road and then switching more of my riding to a less "everything is about speed" mentality I moved all my bikes over to SPD pedals. I find when riding in Japan there are many moments where I want to hop off the bike for a quick sec to see a temple up some steps or through a gravel entrance that would basically end up gnaring up any road cleats, or if Speedplays would feel very unbalanced. In the grand scheme of efficiencies you really loose next to nothing unless you are going for the KoM or something.

      Dont worry, all my bikes r breakless track bikes and all i run is spds. If ur one of those weirdos who run loose tension on spds u do run the risk of unclipping, but the tightest setting keeps my feet secure an i personally never unintentionally unclip. If ur worried about shimano spds, u can run looks version of spd. You can get look spds tight to the point of basically being fixed to the pedal. Good luck, have fun.

      You can set the tension on both road and mtn cleats. So, this shouldn't be a difference in pulling up. And actually, mtb cleats have more float that road bike cleats. Meaning they can be turned to greater degree before they disengage from the pedal. So, while road bikers constantly talk about the "feeling" of security from road cleats, mtb cleats are actually more secure.

    mtb shoes by far. You need bird feet for road. If you have small feet or normal feet and can ride for long sprints without dismounting then road shoes are cool. But when you are like me flat wide feet MTB all the way.BTW I have four santic sets of shoes and I love them.

    I barely can walk with my santic mtb shoes LoL. It's stiff which is good for power transfer yet it's the sole material is too hard and slippery, they should use skateboard wheel nylon pvc material which more rubbery than glassy.

    I used spd mtb shoes on my road bike for years but decided to go for proper road shoes because of single problem which wasnt mentioned here. They CREAK as hell. Is not the bolts is not the pedals but seemingly is the place between shoe sole and the cleat itself. I tried to put grease there but after some rides creaks appear again. Maybe is just my shoe problem but from now only road full carbon shoes.

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  4 роки тому

      I've never had this problem, but they can be loud if the metal cleat touches rocks on the ground while walking

    • @TheUnrevealer
      @TheUnrevealer 4 роки тому +1

      @@TwoWheelCruise I put grease betheen the cleat and the sole as well as other side of the sole and metal plate which has threads. I saw others do some thin layer rubber to prevent this creak. My sole is not the stiffest one, but is not too flexy either to have hotspots during 3-6 hour ride. But it look a bit plasticky thats why maybe the creak. With max stiffness sole this probably gone...

      @@potatetomato Been using them for close to a year now. It's great! bang for your buck! I bought them for about $50 at the time, it was on sale. Only thing I don't like about it is its a bit slippery when walking tiled flooring, I feel like I'm on skates. Other than that, its comfy and my rides are a lot more enjoyable with these on. I'm probably not going back to flat pedals.
      Edit: Would have been a lot better if there are drain holes for when riding in the rainy season.
