  • We’ve gotten a lot of comments on our UA-cam channel for my wife’s accomplishment of cycling 200km to Osaka from Nagoya on flat pedals with regular shoes. Many people have told me to get her a pair of cycling shoes, and we finally did that! Today, Thuong will be trying out her new cycling shoes and Shimano SPD pedals for the very first time!
    Diadora X Trivex Plus II Womens cycling shoes
    I actually bought her these shoes a couple months ago, but we were lacking cleats for her to use, and then she had to go back to Vietnam for a few weeks. After arriving back in Japan, we had some rides already planned, and didn’t want to risk learning on the main roads, so we decided to wait..
    Today we went to Morikoro Park's Cycling course, which is a safe 5km course for bicycles only.

    I wish my partner was this supportive of me; he just tells me how rubbish I am so I stick to my old pedals and trainers on my road bike (after a bad crash thanks to a motorist, I lost my confidence)... I’m actually a bike builder too! Thank you for sharing; I’m super happy for you guys being able to have a great time together - Long May it continue and that those cute shoes, cleats and pedals work for her 😍

    I always assisted the release and entry into new pedals by neatly lubing the cleat pivot on pedal body on inside, then spin it ti use the centrifugal force to get the small friction points lubed good. This part of pedal often left dry at factory, so , lube those points like you would the pins of a bike chain, and that helps ease release, reduce wear and assist in breaking in the new cleats. I see this overlooked so much. Keeping cleat platform phillips screws tight also important, sometimes they're not super tight. These SPD type pedals work great when you keep after them like this. Cleats , install with oiled screws threads or they become fused in

    The cycling park is fantastic! One tip for new SPD users is to get the Shimano SM-SH56 Multi Release Cleats that lets you unclip at any angle rather than only sideways. Also great for commuting use where you may need to unclip in a a hurry.

      I've found them to unclip at the most inopportune times. I much prefer the single release..the SM-SH51s. Even for commuting. But I've been used to single release when I used SPD-SL about 7 years ago

    The day I clipped my shoes in the pedals for the first time made me fall in love with them. Now I ride every bike with clipless pedals, not only my CC-mountain bikes. I feel kinda unsecure on normal pedals now. Never fell off my bikes with clipped in shoes ever! Trunh (sorry if I misspelled her name🤔) will get used to them very quickly and never look back at the old pedals again. It has so many benefits 🤘.

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! I'm the same way, I feel much more secure on clipless pedals. That's pretty good if you haven't gone through the embarrassment of falling over while still clipped in yet. Hopefully she can have a similar track record :)
      It's spelled Thuong, btw.

    • @EndoplasmicReticulum7
      @EndoplasmicReticulum7 6 років тому +2

      Two Wheel Cruise I'm sorry, I hope Thuong can forgive me😄🙏🏼.
      She'll get used to them quickly.
      I also find it interesting that you use mtb pedals on road bikes. In my oppinion it's more versatile and mtb shoes are way more comfortable when having to walk or push the bike.
      She will adapt to them very quickly when she sees and feels the benefits.

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  6 років тому +1

      No worries, it's a hard name to spell / pronounce. My sister's way to remember it is "thong with a u" haha
      And yeah, that's exactly why we use mtb shoes. I normally use speedplay road pedals on my road / track bikes when I was training more seriously, but now that we do more adventure rides and walk around a bit, the mountain bike shoes are a no brainer. :)

    • @kevinjfeeney77

      @@TwoWheelCruise same... when I first went clipless it was on a roadie with SPD-SL. I used a trainer to practice on... clipping in and out. It's like 2nd nature now. I do hate my multi release cleats that are on my Five Ten Hellcats though. I use the single release on my Shimano ME3s.....since I use those for more spirited rides and definitely on my fixed gear, which also has clipless.

    Just doing it the other way round, got a bike for a vintage ride, no clipless pedals allowed, kinda nervous about having to use toe clips and straps... It's nice your wife shares your passion. Mine does to some extent since she's sometimes helping me restore old bikes, but no way to get her on any of them, but hey, at least it gives me a good excuse for the N+1 rule 😀

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  6 років тому +1

      Toe clips and straps are fine fixies, but I don't feel safe on them unless I'm at a controlled environment like a velodrome.
      Some support is better than no support ;) But I couldn't imagine being with someone who doesn't share the same passion to some extent

    Wow.. cycling course! Awesome, you both had it all to yourselves 😁 I use to wear clippless shoes, was great until my whole foot kept going severly numb. They say needed a wide size ( i have wide feet) but didn't had available at the time. Went back to flats and riders were freaking out! It felt more comfortable still gets bit numb on right foot (some nerve condition). I don't race much mostly commute and touring. With my foot problem and past injuries I'm still debating. Yeah, clippless sure made a difference, just takes getting use too at first. Nice choice shoes for Thuong! She'll enjoy them on more rides To come! Be safe!

      That's pretty unfortunate about the numb shoes. Have you tried newer shoe options? Wide sizes come pretty standard now for cycling shoes. I also found that I like mtb shoes better than road since they are easier to walk around in.

    Similar to your wife, I am also trying the new spd sl pedals today. I felt off the bike for the first time since ages because I failed to remove the shoes from the pedals in time (I instinctively pull my foot up instead of outward to get off the pedal)! Painful experience. Lol.

      Ouch! That's a painful price to pay, but a good lesson ;)
      I was really worried the same would happen to her, so I made her practice clipping out a lot before we started. I also had her clip out way before she needed to stop on the course so she had enough time. She had the bad habit of pulling up first as well, but thankfully that's fixed now

    It's a nice video for people who are hesitating to use a pedal/shoe system like SPD in this film. I only want to mention that a SPD system like in this film, is mostly used in MountainBiking. For road cycling there is another pedal system (the three bold road cycling clip-in). This system offers a more stable platform and enhances the power.
    Unfortunenatly they not great for walking. The SPD system is easyier to walk with. Nevertheless great video. I send it to a lady who has already the shoes and the cleats. But afraid to use it, afraid to fall and become injured or get damaged her nice legs...
    It's a choice.

    • @TwoWheelCruise

      lol, that's a pretty funny story! I actually learned at my local velodrome on a fixed gear, with an actual coach who helped catch me when I finished riding, so thankfully no crash for me. I was against them at first since I also did mountain biking, but now I love them :)

    • @shawnbikes
      @shawnbikes 6 років тому

      Mountain biking in my parts is mainly forested trail that consist of constant horse damage. So you're always off your bike going over it. Maybe if I found the right pair, it could happen. I'm no advanced MTB rider though, I get spooked easily on the trick-type sections of the trails haha but for the road, I'm all for the cycling shoes.

    I got the (somewhat counterintuitive) advice to learn using clipless pedals by riding in the city. With all the starts and sudden stops it would force me to develop the quick reactions that I would anyway need out on the roads. Haven't completely followed that advice but I don't worry much about falling over anymore anyway.

    When getting used to clipless pedals always reduce the tension to zero and proceed with getting accustomed to them. This saves on the embarrassing moments in front of spectators. Adjust one notch at a time to get that second nature built up. Nice park to ride around with a salubrious young woman.

    We have something similar to this, except in a grander scale in Tucson, Arizona called the Loop. Approximately 210 km around the city avoiding all traffic. The only problem is pedestrians are allowed. Would love a large course for cycling only.

    to simplify engaging/disengaging you can untighten the allen bolt that make the cleat engage
    judging by the sound it makes it's quite tight...

    Even on the lightest setting if it becomes difficult to release on SPD, spray some oil ( wd-40, or that other oil ) on the pedals! "It really is not an adjustment of the hex screw! Its normally an oil adjustment!" And remember twist and put your foot down!

    Clipless doesn't actually increase the power output capability of a cyclist, so it took me quite a while to become aware of what SPD could be like. The best way to describe it is that it's one of those things you can absolutely live without, until you try it -- and then it will forever feel weird, loose, unstable, to go back. If you have the power, it is always safer to be clipped in, because you can move the bike in much more predictable ways. And there are the multi-release cleats if you're afraid of unclipping in emergencies and crashes.

  • @oldsap

    have you loosened the pedals for her to be able to clip in and out easier (for now)

    got to be so much better, once you get the hang of clipping in and out, the amount of power lost thru a tennis type shoe with the sole bending energy not getting to the pedal with the rigid cycling shoe sole. going to be much better energy transfer. we clipped in first pedals in about '87(hashtag old) and have used nothing but clipless since (apart from one, first, MTB race). Congratulations on beating the 10 minute with them,

    Hey, Cruise, so I just recently got into clipless pedals. I bought a pair of Five Ten mtb SPD shoes and Shimano M530 pedals. Is it normal to feel the cleat contacting the ground when you walk just slightly? What about a teeter-totter tilt sensation when you walk in them? I know they make crunching cracking eggshell sound when I walk on gravel. It's my first time using spd shoes and clipless pedals so I'm not sure if my shoes were defective or it's just a normal thing for such kind of shoes. Also, how are you suppose to fully utilize the clipless pedals? I know you're not supposed to mash them by pressing the pedals down hard but instead just feather it. Am I using it correctly?

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  5 років тому +1

      That sound is normal, but depends on the shoes and how much padding is on the bottom. It's metal touching a hard surface, so it will make sounds, but not really on dirt. Don't worry about use, just replace the cleats eventually if they get warn out (which should take a while)

    • @kevinjfeeney77
      @kevinjfeeney77 4 роки тому

      Agreed.... I did use the SPD-SL on a previous roadie a while back. For rides where you won't be walking I think they're better....but if you commute then the spd is a much better choice. Plus, they make shoes that look nothing like cycling shoes....like pretty much the entire line up from Five Ten. I use the Hellcats. Pearl Izumi, Shimano and Chrome also make cycling shoes that look like normal shoes.

    I have a colnago master that i want to bring to japan when i visit there this summer, it's got 11-25 on the back and 53/39 on the front and my rd only accept up to 28. Should i get another bike for japan? Thinking about building a pinarello dogma disk with 52/36 and 11-30

    • @TwoWheelCruise
      @TwoWheelCruise  5 років тому

      I ride with a 28 and it's fine most of the time for me. Though it depends on where you're riding and what wattage you push. A bigger gear is highly recommended if you will ride a lot in the mountains, especially with baggage

      @@TwoWheelCruise Thanks Cruise, if you need 28 that means I need 34 lol! What kind of bags do you carry when you cycle long distance? is a waist bag better than a back pack? I try to avoid saddle bags since they tend to wear out after a while.

    As beginner, clipping out both feet can be dangerous because you cannot use a pedal to stay one, which without is a habit. Keep one foot clipped in, get from the saddle, then the other foot on the ground. Starting a ride: No pole. Just hit whatever pedal is ahead of the other.
