    You're asking a guy who broke a whitebelts neck for the first time he rolled with them.

    Yes expose them to advanced tech. as an incentive to learn the basics first

      Only issue with that is hard headed people who will hyper focus on those techniques and ignore basics. I think it depends on the person.

    I believe that beginners should be taught... “what those things are. Yet not in their use...” they have so many other basics to learn. Such as not being in such positions and being able to recognize the truth and consequences... not knowing that is a disaster... knowing its time to tap out immediately because you’ve already lost the match. That’s a important learning curve.
    When I was in training I learned enough to know when I was beaten before I was hurt. I don’t consider myself a expert at anything just a general practitioner... who can recognize how the other guy wants to fight... and usually use something else to counter that strength and field of knowledge. Everyone can beat me if I fight on their terms... so I will humbly accept that fact and choose a different option. If you don’t know what a heel hook is... you could force your superior positioned opponent to either harm you or even worse... loose respect for you because you don’t know when too tap... when what he just taught you was how easily he could leave you hobbled and limping around for about two years with medical bills and physical therapy... if your lucky. That leads to quality involvement and eventually when you have learned the basics and usually are able to prevent being trapped in a heel hook or kimera or sleeper hold... when you have developed control and awareness... then your ready for greater responsibilities and knowledge.
    When you convince your instructor that you don’t know when you are beaten... it greatly limits the truths that he can share. If your instructor gives you a few minutes of one on one attention... its much better to be beaten multiple times and learn more... than to struggle helplessly and not even realize how horribly you are positioned. Failing faster leads to succeeding sooner.
    Wanting to know the dangerous things in martial arts is much like only wanting to learn enough chemistry to blow off your fingers.

    White belts should only focus on the fundamentals. They need a strong base and also teaching/exposing a white belt leg locks is dangerous for the new guys

    In my 10th planet gym, we do leg stuffs even for white belt and I haven't heard of about people getting serious injure due to refuse to tap. I think it's all about how you approach the problem and teach them the mechanics of it; that's how you help preventing people from rolling the wrong way or ripping a submission.

  • @DA-hx2qk

    It's about respect for your training partner. If you lock a heel hook in, you go slowly. If they don't tap, you abandon it and move on.The first lesson of BJJ should be to learn to respect your training partner. IMO anyway...

    • @worrywarrior7556

      Agree 100%, but I would add this ... if you catch your partner with a heel hook and he doesn't tap, let go, and after the roll talk with him to let him know he should have tapped ... because he needs to learn to respect the heel hook.

    Start with straight ankle locks, by the time you're a purple belt you'll be familiar with the positions and control needed to attack the legs and transitioning to heel hooks will come easier to you. Learn when you're caught and just tap. No heroes in the gym, everybody has to go to work/home to their families.

    White (lower grade) belts should know what lies ahead. But understand it is NOT part of their curriculum. I teach my students that even I am still learning after 27 years. I feel like I'm in my peak of learning right now.

    I would definitely choose the heel hook over the shoulder, less tearing lol. I think every technique is dangerous and all should be taught. I am a purple belt under Carlson Gracie Team and white belts have neck cranked, finger pulled, etc on me but teaching them the move gives them more control. However, teach them to be calm above all else. Some people don't listen and have to be reminded physically or verbally especially against women 😂

      Congrats on your purple belt, I know that’s a lot of hard work. I’ve had three ruptured quadricep tendon repair surgeries. I would love to take lessons, but I’m afraid that I’d be taken down and blow out a tendon again. A buddy of mine who has studied BJJ for a number of years, thinks I could roll and that BJJ would strengthen my legs in a way I’ve never done before (I powerlifted for 15 years competitively). Sorry for the long winded post, but I’ve wanted to run this by someone of your caliber for a long time now.

    My old training but was just in a pretty high profile match against a guy at least 20 years older than him. He got him in a heel hook but he wouldn't tap, and eventually he got out. Then my buddy got him in it again and the guy didn't want to tap again, so my buddy just rips the guys ankle all to pieces. I don't know that I would've done that, but he won the match.

    Moves are dangerous when you don’t teach them properly

    • @marlonwithers4591
      @marlonwithers4591 4 роки тому

      That's true but you also have to consider adrenaline during sparring, and also lack of control that the majority of white belts will naturally have. And some moves are inherently more risky than others which is why some are banned from competition, or restricted to higher belt levels

    • @eamonshields2754
      @eamonshields2754 4 роки тому

      @@marlonwithers4591 I got ya. I just think after some experience with rolling I don’t think it’s a bad idea to teach white belts leg locks so they know when to tap. With proper training and a lots of drilling/safety, legs locks become less dangerous.

    • @marlonwithers4591
      @marlonwithers4591 4 роки тому

      @@eamonshields2754 Yeah, if all clubs and practitioners have an "apply slowly/tap early" mentality it would greatly increase the safety of these moves in training. I've both injured someone else (trying too hard to get the tap) and been injured by ankle locks (trying too hard to not tap!) in training due to lack of fully being aware of the risk at the time
