The people on this show are not what I would consider hoarders compared to the houses with garbage up to the ceiling, no working plumbing etc. These people are collectors. I 💖 the elephant clock.

Would've sold those hideous paintings in a heartbeat. They would've covered all their past storage fees with plenty left over. Also, their "antiques expert", I think her name is Gillian Anderson Price, is dreadful. She persuaded that lovely lady to part with her items for a fraction of their price to other dealers. Bad form.

Isaac Newton was a hoarder. He owned over 700 volumes on alchemy and chemistry. Most of those volumes wound up in Cambridge University Library, the rest, to private owners.
The effort of a massive collector wound up benefiting a generation of studiers of alchemy to this very day.

Many people speak against hoarders. I personally view hoarders as conservators. They have something within them that makes them want to conserve and preserve items. We need people like this on earth. For instance, think of an item that you really want to own, and it's a blast from the past, but online sellers charge an arm and a leg for it, a hoarder probably would not, a hoarder you could bargain with. Additionally, you could get your item(s) in perfect condition, because they could have piles of brand new boxes of the item(s) that you desire.
If no one desired to conserve any possessions, nothing would be available for those who want it. That would be a sad world to live in. Especially a wasteful one, if everyone just threw perfectly good items into trash bags.
Fun fact: Thomas Jefferson was a hoarder. He hoarded so many books that his wife "suggested" he donate them. One fine afternoon, twelve horses, each pulling wooden bins filled to the brim with books, pulled up alongside the steps of what would become the future Library of Congress. That's right folks, the Library of Congress was started by a hoarder. Aren't you glad?
(I found that Library of Congress roots through older books and microfilms).

      It definitely depends.
I mean, the US show about them is pretty extreme. But Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners (?) shows essentially the same: people who hoard to cope.
      And get attached to things.
I definitely can relate to hoarding for history's sake
But, boy, who knows whatll hapoen after I die, so

you're thinking of collectors. The woman with the nice items she bought from around the world was a collector. the man who wanted to keep a gym bag he hadn't seen in 14 years was a hoarder. hoarding is terrible for the the hoarder and the people around them. It's usually triggered by trauma or grief. I used to have a difficult time with not tying people to objects. When my uncle died my mom ended up getting a lot of his stuff and I took a bowl. One day it got knocked over and broke. I collapsed on the floor sobbing as if he'd died all over again. That bowl didn't mean anything to anyone else but to me if I kept it safe I was keeping my uncle alive. That's hoarding. It starts with bowls and moves quickly into garbage and before you know it you're too afraid to clean or throw anything away. My grandmother was a hoarder (or I might not have recognized the same tendencies in myself) and her house was condemned. You're thinking oh a little extra stuff but the reality is she couldn't get to her toilet to use it. She had wild animals loose in the house (snakes, rats, cats). If you had eaten from her kitchen (not that anyone without a death wish would) You'd have become ill. I don't know what triggered the hoarding in my grandmother, she led a hard life so it could have been a number of things, but I know hoarding is not a positive trait.

That triple named "expert" irritated me. Particularly when she kept poking the timepiece portion of the elephant clock with the golf club, beginning at 26:40 - which was fortunately thwarted by the hostess. What a load of hot air Ms. Price spewed.

Just what actually is the expertise of "Jillian Andersen Price" or whatever the name was? Instead of preseting provenance, she made statements like, "sixties or something; golf's not my sport..." or "I don't like it; it's not my style." Since when is the personal taste of the appraiser the question? The objective retail value in the current time, and the provenance are key. She offered nothing but referrals.

Hear, hear! I absolutely agree with you and was about to make the same comment, but yours sums it up beautifully. She really is quite useless as a so called appraiser. I actually think she's a member of the production crew whom they've dragged in to add an additional layer to the show. It's obvious that she knows next to nothing.

That is so true. And a good appraiser will tell you just that they do not buy the items they appraise.
      Conflict of interest
I brought an item to an antique shop and the man appraised and gave me $40 for it later I learned even at scrap value it was worth $200. Lesson learned

I heard that Trish did the same thing. When she found out the true value, she turned up at the clock guy's store after hours, angrily demanding her money back. When he refused, she smashed the clock over his head and jumped on his back. She then stole his car and crashed it through the antique "expert's" house, pinning her against her mid-century dining table. Trish is now in a padded cell at the Broadmoor Mental Asylum.

Not sure about the elephant pendulum estimate as other's have mentioned. The question was never asked: "What is it worth?" There was just a forced bid. Passed down from a grandfather and deemed original. There are reproductions. Clock maker said it was quite old.
I don't think that clock seller who specializes in building clocks and movie props was the best choice. Although, he did recognize the clock. Mentioning "I have seen it as a Kangaroo" seemed to cheapen it a bit and set up for a cheap offer IMO.
It would have been good to have known the materials - and to get a second opinion!
Anyway, a Patinated Bronze Elephant Clock, France, 1880 is selling for CA$5,672.75 here:

Very interested to see some of these hoarder shows coming back in 2 years to see what's happened. I don't think simply throwing everything out of the house takes care of the problem for these people. It seems to me that's simply throwing everything away just gives them a new canvas to start all over.
