You are the first person I've ever seen conpact mud.
I purchased a Harbor Freight plate tamper 5 years ago when I was building a paver block patio. In those five years, at least 10 friends and family members have also used it for their own projects. By far the best thing I have ever purchased from Harbor Freight. The only advice I can give is to keep the air filter clean.
I agree GH. Also change the oil frequently. Oil is cheap compared to a new engine. Have a great day.
Al, speaking from experience your not using your biggest asset, the tractor. With the bucket, you can spread and level the gravel not to mention, haul more.
I was looking at that box blade, just sitting there all alone…
@@kevincameron8437 what does the machine sound like
When backfilling and compacting trenches, it is recommended do it it in layers. Like: add 4-6 inches of fill - compact it, then repeat! Trying to compact a trench after it is fully filled will most likely not give the desired results. Also, as you found out, running a compactor over mud isn't such a great idea.
in construction they are called lifts 6 to 8 inch lifts
@@henryknight7876 --- OK, fair enough, but back in the 1960's whenever I was on the handle of one of those compactors building electric substations out in California, we just called them layers of backfill. Ran pneumatic tampers as well.
@@olgringo-421 well i'm not in or from California, but I am in Louisiana and have done dirt/fill work in Florida, Louisiana and North Carolina also I am a Q.C. Manager for the US Army corps of Engineers and have done levee's for them several times was only trying to help you
Don't think he does his research first
@@henryknight7876 I’m none of the above but my experience with the Army Corps of Engineers is they can’t build a sand castle and make it right. Dealt with them on lake shore projects and the end result was worse than the initial problem.
Nice to see someone who still has faith in Harbor Freight. I used to like them and buy regularly until I had so many failures that I now rarely buy anything from Harbor Freight.
Like Al..our store never has what I want in stock....hmmmmm might be that way all over. 😆🤣😂LOL
Happy Monday from Wisconsin - I just pulled out over 2 and a half **correction*** gallons not pounds *** of potatoes from my little garden. I planted a dozen seed potatoes and cut them up. Al...you were right I did get a good crop. and how exciting it is going to be as I eat from my own garden. Next year I will fertilize the soil better and get even more. Congrats on your new toy. We are having so much fun watching you two prep your off grid land. Have a great week and God Bless!
Fresh potatoes are the best
I don't know what it is about growing your own taters, but it seems to be so rewarding... even though potatoes are purchased so inexpensively at the store. It almost doesn't make sense to spend the time and resources to grow your own, but it appears to be SO satisfying! Glad you had a good haul and learned some for next year! Thanks for sharing...👍
We're in Wisconsin too! North side of Milwaukee, where are you guys?
@@samvalentine3206 Where I shop it's $7 for 10lbs.
I’m from Jefferson county Wisconsin!
Something to consider - using #2 gravel is good for a top coating on your driveway, but to establish a good base, try getting some bankrun- larger stones mixed with sand for a great driveway base. Then top with your #2 unwashed gravel.
Yes this!
Al, you created a hydraulic pumping effect using the compactor over the clay and gravel. Use your tractor and boxblade to spread the gravel and track it in with your excavator. The compactor is more for 2 or 3 inches of gravel on a flatter drained surface; sidewalk, driveway. Good luck, hope it works out for you. Be patient even though you have many irons in the fire. God bless you and your family.
you get it. Its meant for leveling 2-3 inch top before finishing . Totally useless in open ground where large trucks are meant to move around. you need heavy truck, roller to level those areas. can use the tractor and bobcat
Would have been smarter to buy a tow behind roller for the tractor. Filled with water it would compact deeper and faster. He hasn't a clue when it comes to spreading and filling. The same swale across the drive as when he started, just added a few inches over the whole thing. Needed to focus on filling the swale and not the two high areas. A roller would help a lot with compacting all his roads, which he won't get down with a plate compactor.
@@davidjohnston1971 yes he hasn't a clue
Isn’t the point that he shows other novices what he is doing, that at least he tried and then learns from any mistakes he makes? Many people have specific knowledge about very specific areas that others don’t know about. I have learned a lot from him and admire his diy attitude in all that he does. Experts who give input may not always help him, but they help other novices such as myself that watch and learn from others
Hi Al, those Predator engines are basically a Honda GX Series Clone. The big difference is the air cleaner and all the sheet metal parts (shroud, recoil, and gas tank). Those engines should always have the gas run dry if they are going to be moved or stored. Turn off the black fuel valve and let itself run the carburetor out of gas…then you have zero problems with the carburetor or gas running into the oil. Hope this helps you….
Good advice about running the carb out of gas.
Good morning Lumnah Acres. Al, why not lower the rippers on the box scraper and run them through your leech field to till the soil & remove roots and stones and also ditch the upper side of the driveway to drain water down to the culvert . Have fun and keep extra underwere handy !!!!
As you noticed (LOL) compacting wet soil or gravel just brings water to the surface and creates a large soft area. Top the wet area of with a thick layer of dry gravel and just lightly compact, not to long, and let it dry/stabilize.
Liquefaction
Good luck with your new toy, but what's wrong with build in the USA ???
There is something called road plastic (it is black in color) you lay it down first on your roads before you lay your gravel down. This way your gravel won't disappear into the dirt. Holy COW took my breath away for a couple of seconds when you almost tipped over whew whew whew you saved yourself for sure good thinking. God's blessings.
Hey AL, once you get rock pile low enough. Take your box blade drag it and level where you need it. You can get a better looking job with the box blade. Just an idea.
I, too was a bit surprised Al didn't use his box scrapper on this one. But then he knows the hassles he has in switching out both vehicles and attaching the proper implement.
@@dwighthires3163 Yes he already had the box blade on the tractor. To me it would have been easier. But he made it work that what count.
Watching you try to compact mud was very humorous. Made me chuckle.
Al the proper way to avoid continued settling of your trenches is to use water to jet ,Using water helps to fill voids with dirt. The next step is to use a roller with spikes embedded that you pull behind a tractor. The roller is nicknamed “sheeps foot”.The spikes are flat at the tip to enhance compaction.Hope this helps.I enjoy your channel. Thanks
Dont forget the spark plug wrench. It is right where you left it. The manual is also where you left it but is not the same place as the spark plug wrench.
Al be safe with all your project's. It is exciting to see the many projects you ate doing to the off grid property ready!!
Outdoor with the Morgan’s (UA-cam) bought the same one. He used his to compact the cement floor inside the building he built. He laid something so the floor would be heated that was poured over with cement. About 75 or so yards was poured.
I bought a couple years ago and still running great There Predator motors are all top notch
Things are getting real interesting on this project. Simply breathtaking. Thanks for sharing.
Gooood morning from central Florida! Hope everyone has a great day!
Howdy there, David! Hope you and yours have a great day too! 👍
Good morning David
@@teresahyneman4349 Good morning Teresa!👋
I bought that same compactor about 8 years ago I also bought some wheels and bolts about 8 in Long to go through on the holes on the side of the compactor to roll it around easy peasy
Good idea!
Love watching you guys with your sunny sky's and gardens everything is right in your world here its a disaster so many out of homes or have lost their homes 😞 along with co-vid and now a election. Kind of depressing so thank you for your video it is really appreciated thank yous thank yous love your level headedness love and light gina al and olivia 💕🙏👍god bless
I agree with you! A lot of people find peace and happiness, for many different reasons, by watching Lumnah Acres videos! I am so stressed about what is happening in Afganistan! The Afghan people are "good" people who don't deserve to be run out of their homes, beaten, raped, tortured, or killed!! All white people, all Afghans who help whites, all afgan police, and all Afghan military are being killed!! The Taliban now have enough power to greatly increase US terrorism!! This world needs a lot of praying for all of the disasters that are happening and will happen!
This might seem mean spirited but it's not meant to be. Watching the compactor sinking was just the laugh I needed to start my day.
I liked seeing you pray and give thanks to the Lord! Amen! Good job with compactor too!
Nice job on the driveway. Have fun with your new toy. Wonderful to see things coming together there. So happy for you. Sending blessings your way.
Al here’s a suggestion for getting the compactor in and out of your truck or a trailer , take a piece of rebar and bend it with a loop at the top center and weld it to the sides of your compactor , this way you can hook a chain to it and pick it up to move it around
i'm hoping that water leaching up isn't a spring and the ground dries out for you. It is very difficult to turn a boggy area into a dry building site. That compactor should give you years of good service. That cucumber salad looked awesome. Blessings to all.
For big area's the excavator is the best compactor
Seeing how well that plate compactor worked, I'd say you picked a winner. I hope that wet spot isn't a natural spring seeping thru. Keep up the great work!
My second patio going in at this house. This time I purchased the same compactor because of the price, especially the cost of used ones. Having it on hand while the project is progressing is a must. Quality of this unit is by far enough for how much I will use it in it's lifetime. Would have been cheaper to rent but having to get and return it wasn't worth the savings. At the end of all my projects I'll sell it or just keep it to loan out.
I think that's a nice idea to hang on to it to loan out. I wish every county had a tool library and a fab lab.
I love how you guys are getting along on your project and I love how you wife does simple meal of three things
Gina, I had to take my garden down last year and when you started picking the frest tomatoes and cukes I was REALLY envious. Beautiful.

Good evening Robert and Spunky! Have a pleasant evening!
That should work out well for you. Mike Morgan ("Outdoors with the Morgans") has one of theirs. He knows construction machines, and he's quite happy with his.
Thanks for sharing the new toy, I mean tool. It will surly come in handy for many projects over the years. You're going to be very busy over the next couple of months getting all these jobs done and inspected. Hope the contractors/workers, materials and inspection teams keep up the pace. Have a Blessed day.
As others have said, fill and compact in lifts, doing it after will not compact even the top 6 inches well because the soil underneath is not solid. You might want to have some additional road base piled up near this area so when your dump trucks start coming in and compacting that you can immediately fill and grade to protect your culvert.
That sounds like a really good idea. I think the dumptrucks can compact that driveway right?
I totally agree with you on the status of the modern gas cans. I have asked men how they work and they do not know. I have to take useless "safety" spout completely off, lift the 5 gals. of gas and pour it into my large garden tractor. Don't even ask about pouring gas into the small hand mower or the large garden tiller.......
I bought a bunch of old style vent caps and gas proof glue for them and drill a 1/2 inch hole in the top rear of every modern can for them, and just open it when I am pouring gas. Takes government totally out of the picture and gas pours nicely
@@krazykeltic8103
We’re from the govt and we’re here to help..
Especially love my dead tire pressure sensors, a fortune to replace.
Good job with all of the progress. Maybe find some old lawnmower handles and switch them with those on your new piece of equipment. Looks as though they made them for short folks like me.
Good Afternoon, I have a quick suggestion for you. Wherever you open new stuff, leave a gallon sized or larger bag tacked to the wall. put literature in the bag until you get a chance to put it away. Try to get into the habit of writing a date on them right away.
I recently put a journal on the wall in the utility room for dates and receipts of repairs and household purchases. I wish I had done it the day I bought the house. I keep a fine point sharpie marker and glue stick in the bag so there's no hunting around.
Good idea!
good morning family this cucumber salad is very good with rice and beans it is delicious 😍 a fried egg too 😋😋😋
Good Tuesday mornin Moose Crossing ... hope you are having a nice day AL, Gina & Olivia .. take care.
Good save on Tippy the Excavator! Luckily your bucket arm was in the right position for you to right the 'Vator. Your water on the culvert might be a sign of a hidden spring?
Thank you for the video. I do look forward to watching them. Have a great week.
I know nothing about putting in a driveway, just wanted to catch your video. Have a blessed day everyone!
That plate compactor is meant to be used on one to two inch layers of material. For your drive way the best compacting comes when you track it in with your excavator. Use the excavator Luke, track it in. The plate compactor will be a great tool in the construction of pads and walkways.
found that out a few years ago myself, had a large area where it was a tad clay and wet, plated it and naaaaaa even with hogan added still flooded, told add a bit of hogan roll it with truck, add some more just keep repeating...it worked ,so finish layer was easy to lay, and to this day its fine no problems ..
Ditto🍺
If you want to save the pipe lay down 2 or 3 layers of plywood for big trucks
@@ride-it-outtimandtoni232 If he's got six inches of tracked in material on top of the culvert. It's not going to collapse. It would be an extremely rare vehicle that would cause problems. Rule of thumb, if it can travel down the highway to get there, it will cross that culvert with no problem.
@@rickster9993 6 inches compacted on top means nothing if it’s not compacted from the bottom up though to include the sides. If the sides are not compacted the pipe will fold under heavy load.
@@ride-it-outtimandtoni232 That doesn't make any sense. You can only compact from the top down. You have to place 4-6 inches of material down before you can compact from the top down. You can compact a lift larger than 6 inches if you have a big/heavy enough machine. That plate compactor isn't big enough to do more than a 1 to two2 inch lift.
I use a small de thatcher (around $30) on the back of my riding mower to level out driveway or lawn (you can put on a few small blocks for added weight) THEN compact a level surface. But then again I buy STONECRETE - it cost more but turns into concrete. My second driveway is rock hard & level...
Vibration compacting tends to bring water up to the surface I'm told. If compacting wet areas, better to use pressure (weight) such as repeated driving over with track or wide tires.
You may want to get or create a longer lever arm for that compactor. Just watching your posture while using it I'll bet you really "felt" it afterwards. I also noticed that it proved a bit the longer you maneuvered that machine. I know I'm only a retired therapist who's spent 4 decades assessing & advising people on their ergonomics. Advice is only useful once applied. 🙃 Blessings abundant to you all always 🙏.
I only buy Harbor Freight stuff if I don’t have to rely on it on a daily basis. For hard use I buy name products. Or rent.
I've had mine for five years or so and it's still going strong. A couple of tips. Run 100% gasoline - no alcohol. When it's going to sit for awhile, drain the fuel. There's a screw on the carburetor bowl for just that purpose. Start it and run it til it dies. I like to put some canned gas (I know it's expensive), about a half pint or so and let it fill the carburetor bowl. Start it for a minute or two and then leave it. Be aware that the air filter needs frequent cleaning because it operates in a dust cloud.
Vibration makes water come up in this situation the more you go through the more water comes up and contaminâtes good material! The best thing to do is let it dry and come back! Or replace the muddy stuff by god rock! Good luck 👍
Dig it all out and build a bridge across the trench.
I hope 2 trucks come together, one to pull the first one out when it goes axle deep.
Hope that I'm wrong.
Al you need to be more careful up there working by yourself I know sometimes Gina can’t go to the property but you really need to have someone with you up there if an accident on machinery were to happen just concerned for ya☺️
You might want to look at installing a line of drain tile in that low area…it’ll draw that water away from that lo space and allow you to direct the water to where you want it. I’ve seen this done for farmers and wet/bad draining fields…
That’s a really good idea! Ditches and drainage is what you need
We bought the chepo WEN plate compactor from Menards. Worked well enough for us. About the same price, and slightly higher advertised compaction force.
Hi family I have been following your life’s for years and years. I ain’t a homesteader. I have a few questions. 1. Why haven’t you build a trench on both sides of the culvert so the road is better protect and water can flow. Like a small canal. 2. Are you getting a post drill for on one of the machines. To build your fences 3. Are you getting a dump trailer so you can collect and build Gina her rock walls all over the property. And 4. You should definitely get Gina her own tool belt and tools. So she can build her own projects. I know she can do it. She deserves it. The lord has given you the most patience friend and wife. And yes she is a master chef in the kitchen. I would love to see her build her own projects on the new property goodluck and god bless you all.
Hi Al, love your work. I would use your skip loader to compact as you go. Fill the bucket with dirt and drive back and forth. on the final lift use the Vibra plate. I would use the scraper in the back of the skip loader to grade it, also. it will make it smoother. Keep up the good work.
Here in salmon arm bc we got rain on some of the fires can see the mountains today still a bit smokey... Got a good sleep not worrying about fire over night.. Hope the rain keeps up... Taking down pool have to wash everything soot on everything..
Wow, that has to be hard to have the fires close to you. I hope you don't get burnt out. Take care.
Al, have you ever heard of the technique to keep your gravel driveway's from pot-holing easily?
It involves used tires of any size (the tires should have the same tread width); cut the sidewalls off; place tires side by side on the driveway then cover with your gravel.
This is a cheap solution that keeps the gravel on the driveways, from constantly creating pot-holes by the weight of vehicles pushing gravel out from under their tires. The imbedded old tires keep the gravel from spreading outward when driven over.
This will greatly minimize the number of times you will have to grade the gravel driveway.
i dont know if i will ever need something like that personally...but i do love harbor freight..
Now that you have a shed to keep it in and a water source, a hose, a leaf blower, and a stack of rags can help keep your machines cleaner. ☺👍
I own many harbor freight tools, most I have found work just fine with a little adjustment now and then. It seems the bigger equipment is built from quality materials. I have never had one of their small engines but I have heard that they work fine.
Al, I've had my HF plate compactor for almost a decade, it's been a great runner and for the money, I don't think you could have gotten anything else any better for the price.
I also bought their portable sawmill earlier this year for the same reason, not to mention that every other brand I tried to purchase, had a 4-6 month period, before they could get it shipped. I got mine in 5 days and have been using it for months and if I had bought elsewhere, I would still be waiting for it to arrive.
Enjoy seeing you and the content you put out there. It's been a wet year for you so far, not so for us here in the Pacific Northwest. I hope the weather settles down, so you can get everything accomplished before winter storms set in. Can't wait to see the tiny house get underway.
Keep up the GREAT work!
I have had the harbor freight compactor for almost 20 years, Things that I have found out do not turn off the ignition turn off the gas and run the carb dry, if you do not you have the danger of carb problems, hard starts and other gas line problems
I was almost going to say that's what Al did at 18:38 - but instead it looked like he turned the engine off by using the choke to kill it.
I have a plate compactor from H/F and haven't had any problems with it yet I'm putting some wheels on it to make it easier to move around. That's the only thing I see to be a problem. I like your videos I'm hoping you get dry whether for you so you can get off to a great start on your build
In Australia those plate compactors are always called “Wacker Packers”. Using a wacker packer on mud or wet clay surfaces creates liquefaction or a bog, not a great idea. 🇦🇺
Haha. Lend me your Wacker Packer for the weekend.
I ran Honda engines for 20+ years and came across the predator, it’s sort of a Honda clone some of the parts are Inner changeable, but I’ve run probably 15,000 hours through each one. Great machine. Gina that salad looks amazing, I bet it was yummy.
We purchased a Honda compactor from northern tool and it will not start. Not sure what the deal is but very unhappy.

I love the way you filmed/edited the intro to Gina’s cooking! Very nice!!!
I have 3 motors from harber fright and all still running today 4 years old this month good motors if you take care of them.
I’m a fan of harbor freight power equipment. I have a bunch of generators I use on roofing projects, a welder and plasma cutter. If you treat the machines right you get a lot of value for the money. As far as those gas cans go, I have a few of the ones you have and think they are garbage, I like my old school round 5 gallon cans way better. Good job up there pal!

Hey Al. It always amazes me how good and entertaining your content is. Just keep up the great work. Good morning from Ireland.
You're glad you didn't tip the excavator, your shorts were extremely happy!
With so many trucks coming I would put a couple of flags at the culvert edge just as a safety precaution
That is a good idea too. It might get so uneven there from the dump trucks that they will have trouble telling where the diveway ends above the colvert.
The new driveway looks nice and it will be interesting to see what's coming.
A couple of thoughts. Why not give the driveway a slight crown so that any water can run off to the sides and more easily to the ditch keeping the center more stable. Also it could be useful to place a suitably large rock on each side of the driveway to mark out the culvert. That will be good marks for trucks and trailers to avoid accidental damage to the culvert ends.
Al, I thought you and the whacker were gonna disappear down that quik sand. 😂 Good job in keeping it going 👍
use the box blade faster and nicer finish it's made for what you are doing
i think that tool not necessary, it's better to fill it up and compact during the dry season, just roll it with a bulldozer and let the rain flatten it
Al, because of the area you need to compact, you really need a small roller, it'll take you weeks to compact the area with what you've just bought, you are meant to pass over so many time , something like 5-10 times
I really like your new toy, Al. Hope you had a great weekend:)
It will be a real bonus and it will pay for itself vey quickly. Wonderful going home to beautifully cooked food.
Hi Al, another great vlog. Did you use driveway cloth(can't remember name) it's like woven cloth on rolls to stop you loosing stone into to soil and some cloths stop any moisture coming through. Here in UK contractor use it when digging new roads across fields .
