Backwards pistons, shaved blocks, and lightened cranks! Just like my buddies dad in high school that taught all of us as much as we were willing to do. Love it!
Hey Uncle Tony, I love the slants. There were plenty here in Australia when I was a kid & there are still a fair few running around today. My dad & had them in all his cars & one in an old Dodge truck he drove for work. I'm so looking forward to this build, the lessons & the simple explanations & reasons why you do it. It's the little tips & secrets that you give & the no bullshit way you present the show that keeps me & I'd say most everyone else coming back. Cheers guys & keep up the excellent work.
I’ve always heard that the AU slants where slightly different than the US slants. Several years ago I had privilege to go to Sidney as we where leaving a grabbed a bunch of car mags at the airport unfortunately they had a bunch of 4cyl stuff in them. But what they where doing to them was insane.
james mendyk hahaha they will have a go at anything. The Ford followers here love the 6 cylinder BARRA motor, they’re pulling big numbers from them. A mate of mine had one in his work ute & it was putting out 550 kilowatts (737.5) hp at wheels. Australians abbreviate every word, a ute is a utility vehicle, his was the size of a late 70’s El Camino. As in the US the LS gets a lot of attention & now the Hemi is finding its way in a lot of older Australian Mopars. Cheers👍🏻
I'm personally glad we replaced it with the Hemi 6. Get the best of both worlds to meet your taste. Plenty of slants still around for those who do love them.
Franc Furian NZ full contact speedway stock cars all used to run slants. We had our share of slant Valiants too.But the Aussie Valiant hemi six was the go.The last great Aussie 6 the Ford Barra.
Probably more in the mopar camp than most. I know talking about this kind of stuff in the chevy world will catch you a ton of flack. Before I had to part out and scrap my f body I had plans for working over the 350 with a few things like ported vortec beads and a slew of secondhand parts, the heads in particular caught me some harsh criticism! I figured I could get them all day for 25 bucks a pop, port them by hand and modify whatever manifold I ended up with to fit. The criticisms started with how dumb that was because for just a bit more than what they thought that would cost I could order fresh tecs online, and for a little more than that I could step up to some iron performance heads and a bit more some basic aluminum heads. Before I knew it I was being told that my budget beater 350 absolutely needed a set of 2000 dollar alloy heads and all the attendant hardware or I might as well sell the car! I don't know about some people, but I do this because I love it. Even if it was noble a few bucks more to have someone send me a box of clean parts the thought of building a car like that leaves me cold.
@@DrewLSsix I was just telling a friend at work about that same thing, cept it was from 20 years ago when I was building a Ford small block. Basically, until you build it to the point you can't drive it on the street anymore because it needs a 4000 RPM stall converter("lol, why would you run a stick? they are sooo slooow") and you can't leave a stop light without the engine going ape and redlineing so it doesn't snub out..... yeah until you hit that point, you are stupid for not spending " just a little more". The internet is so full of good advice! in my situation, i was swapping a 351W into a 302 car. I wanted this for the significant increase in power while still being very smoothly delivered, because I drove the car to work 6 days a week for 8 months of the year. All I got was "that's so stupid, just build the 302.... if you do this this and this it will be even more powerful" yadayadayada until pretty soon I was supposed to put a reverse valve body C4 auto in and a turbo kit 20 posts later as they all fought amongst themselves. I just asked them what kind of drag radials I was supposed to buy for my commuter car and told them thanks for nothing.
@@steelhorsecountry5245 I beg to differ. Look into sloppy mechanics for example. Make great power with largely stock LS based truck engines all day long, very much budget oriented and making alot more power than any NA carb stuff could ever dream of for the HP per dollar. Tons of people are doing it thank to Matt from sloppy among others and doing alot of it at home in their driveway, with second hand parts, oem parts, cheap Chinese parts etc.
@@DrewLSsix I don't know who was criticizing you, but I'm a Chevy guy for over 40 years. And the vortec head is the best flowing pre LS head Chevy ever made. They are idiots for criticizing you, vortecs out flow alot of aftermarket aluminum heads straight out of the junkyard. But now if going fast cheap is all your about the junkyard LS is the way to go. But if you already have a old school 350 block and want a killer cheap street tourqe monster, the vortecs are the only way to go. But personally I only run my old school big block Chevy engines, more smiles to the miles. Build what you want and tell all the hot rod magazine keyboard mechanics to kiss you ass.
I gotta tell ya U.T. - I'm liking your projects, and how straight up you are about this stuff. I'm (also) an elder, burp exhaust fumes, built and raced damn near everything with wheels and an engine, and bleed motor oil - and it does me good to see someone keeping the faith! Aces Tony!, you're all about real - not a pretender, well done!
Eagerly awaiting this one! I have had multiple slant sixes over the years. My favorite was a 73 Dart Sport. I used to drool over the parts in the Direct Connection catalog that I couldn't afford (I was just out of high school in 87). I always wanted to build one! This will be an awesome series, UT! The only time I ever got busted street racing was in that car! I was racing a guy with 250 cid straight 6 in a Chevy Nova. According to the cop, I was actually pulling ahead when we passed him! I was super lucky that the trooper ended up being our next door neighbor and he never turned the tickets in! That was close! :D
This is a bad ass idea! It’s so cool to learn the little tricks and tips even if I never build a slant six the same ideas will apply to anything. It’s also nice to see a project like this that isn’t stupid expensive. I know I’m not the only one who can’t wait for the next episode!
It's great that you show how to build cars without having to spend oneself into oblivion, not only that but also what's really necessary in building a truly fun and usable car.

I have my grandfathers 83 d150 with factory 225 slant 6 and I’m gonna be starting a rebuild on it soon despite all the skeptics pushing me to LS swap it but I’m gonna hold strong and stick with my slant 6. Keep putting out info on these engines!
Thanks for keeping it real Tony. My old man drag raced the Midwest for years. I grew up at the track seeing all the big names. My all time favorite Ted Kramer. He ran a t-bucket alter with a straight six. A bad machine!
Having a Slant6 68 Dart and actually having Canyon road to exploit, was Awesome.. my Girl and I have Twins both Original slant6 Darts but mine is now 318, hers will out corner mine hands down.. And agreed with the other Comment Build it.. peace fellow Nephew
I felt the same way 20 years ago. I’ve always had 318s, 340, and 360s and now wouldn’t mind having a Slant Six because they are cool and I’ve never owned one.
I wish I lived back east near Uncle Tony, I would be hanging out every weekend helping build and wrench and most importantly gain knowledge from that big brain of his. 👍👍
Keep up the great work Tony! I've been in the performance industry for most of my life down here in Australia and love the Slant. Looking forward to following this build. I've just purchased a really nice 62 Valiant (equiv to your 60 model), sporting a 225 and plan to do a 250hp street build backed by the factory 904 combo.
Tony , my last Commute to work car I bought to drive before I retired from the old North Assembly was a 1975 Dart Special edition with the leaning tower of power , Tony I still have her she's been a daily run about for 44 years she's a little rusty but she runs like Sofia Loren at a spaghetti dinner , I think she's going to outlive me . Most underrated engine we ever produced in my time at Chrysler.
This is the perfect time to show PRE-MACHINE BLOCK TIPS....... Grinding away sharp edges and all the slag. Opening up oil passages and coolant passages. Getting more oil to the crank bearings. Opening up, cleaning and easing the oil pump and it's inlet/outlet. Shaving the block and why. This should be a great series!!!
I'm excited abt project. I told you before I love the slant six. I think the most reliable engine ever built. I love the Chevy straight six too. I built those with cams and four barrels. Keep video s coming.
I think what you're doing is great. I only knew one other guy back in the day who hopped up a Slant-Six, alot of his hypo stuff was hand-made, manifold for 3 2 barrel carbs, homemade header, his didn't have all the Hemi stuff yours has, and interestingly, his ride was a Dart too. He could never beat any of the traditional hot rods, but he did alright...great stuff!
How about a Coronet? Drove a late '74 Coronet with the 3 on the tree, non-power steering for a few years, not a bad ride with the after-market air, gas mileage in the upper-mid twenties, lots of room and the 26 gallon tank from a V8 example gave it cruising range out the ass!
Worked on a ton of those in 60's.............a bit tough to do points but after you get the hang, no problem.......thinking back, that was one tough engine, never had to do a valve job, even pull the head or timing chain..........was one of the most reliable 6 cylinders out there.............wish I had my 68 Chrysler 300....440.....torqueflite......a guy slammed me from behind as I was parking in front of my house, twisted the whole rear body.....parted it out.........loved those big Newport style bodys.........huge engines, huge power, just drop in first gear and hit the pedal to the floor.........tires would spin until you let off..............oh the days back then........
The weight of this thing just blows my mind Tony, a real eye opener, that's a serious diet you put her on, makes my little Datsun with a v6 shoehorned in look like a heavy weight 😂
Always Great Boss.. my Girl friend has been driving her "twin" of mine 68 more door Dart but hers is still Slant6, she asked me, so how do we make my Faster.. I showed her your intake set up.. Your influence is felt Everywhere thanks Always Boss and Oi oi oi
Can’t wait to see what you end up with! Also excited to see what Bottle Rocket ends up doing. I inherited a motor build, the man doing it passed away. Based on the parts he was on his way to one wicked BBC. I also had two old Ford trucks follow me home the last couple weeks so I’ll have a busy winter if work doesn’t get it the way! Best car channel there is. True blue collar ways without all the clickbait bullshit and throwing daddy’s money at stuff. Keep up the good work! If you ever need another set of experienced hands I’m always looking for an excuse to take time off and I know how to get to TN!
this really makes me want to go hot rodding again. I did know anything about the slant six cars until I started watching your videos (although I have owned tons of them back in the day in passenger cars.) The fastest my modified eliminator 4 cylinder car ever went was 11.66. I will be amazed if you can get this thing to even barely dip into the 11's. I also was involved (as a support person) in Pro-stock car and more recently in Pro-Stock motorcycle, but NHRA has become so big time and expensive and serious, it just got to be where it wasn't fun anymore. This really looks like something that could be fun! I have always loved the "oddball" cars. Anything that is way off the beaten path...Thanks for all the interesting videos!
Thanks Uncle Tony. Any Slant 6 build gets my attention. As far as crank weight differences in the 81-87 motors, does that mean faster and higher RPM’s?
Very cool project. I believe I remember Steve magneto magnante building a 13 second aluminum block duster... Shit, 20 years ago? Maybe? Idk man I'm old. Good luck brother 💪👍👊
@@canabox7112 lol, dude it's been a while. I may have the magazine buried in my stash of hotrod magazine's in my basement though. Either way Steve is awesome. That dude forgot more about classic cars than most people know. And I'm pretty sure he put a little sauce (nitrous)on it to get it to run in the 13's. Still would surprise most people though.
i love the idea and concept growing up in South Florida i spent a lot of time riding inmy Uncls Dodge Stepside pickup with 3 on the Tree a slant 6 and him pulling a 23 foot Aluminum hull boat around surprisingly the setup had enough power eve on the steeper boat ramps although often we move our heavy Scuba gear toward the tailgate to put more weight onthe rear wheels for traction that truck was a early 1970s 2 wheel drive he bought after his tour inVietnam as a Marine and needed a work truck when he came home to Louisianna ! BTW he beat the hell out of that truck and it was rolled over any late nights onhis way home from the bars numerous times but it kept going for over 20 years the only thing i remember being a pain was the shifting linkage jamming up that required some love taps with a ax handle behind the drivers seat LOL
I'd like a dime for every slant I rebuilt while at Caterpillar Indust. for forklifts. I loved it when one would come in and compared to other engines Cat used was rare. They, to me, were the best engine for small, medium , and lite/heavy, applications . Also very nice and e-z to convert to natural gas fuel. I always took the most pride in the tipped six over the others.
Listening to the logic you use regarding the attempts at weight reduction and fixing the crank to improve oil slinging I am curious; why not use abrasives to smooth out all of the unmachined cast surfaces?
Tony!........You are a bad ass! I already have mopar coursing through my veins. Literally, Dodge motor oil and metal shavings in my bloodstream. Watch unkle Tony and it gets embedded in your soul! Well done! Existing video and I look forward following this. You CAN run a tank on the slant six. So bottle rocket? DONE if your involved.
You should talk to Bob Wright in Manitoba!!! He had Dodge engineers come up here to find out how he was getting such HP. Funny thing is that he told me that he wouldn't tell them.
Have you considered going to an EFI setup like the Fast EZ or Holley sniper? I don’t think it would add too much weight and on the fly changes would be beneficial.
Back in the 70's we class raced these things with a single carb. We bored them .125 over & used a 6 cyl ford flat top piston that gave them 13-1 CR & zero deck height without knocking the deck down & brought them up to 242 cu in. There were no off the shelf manifolds back then & I built 4 barrel bolt-on adapters that were 2" tall on a milled down modified stock iron piece ported to hell. Best results were with a Q-jet turned sideways with the secondaries on the outside. The blue Australian truck head was the best choice back then. We used to call them a 12-30 engine for two reasons. You could park a brick on the gas pedal after breakfast & the sucker was still running after lunch. The other reason was it looked like half a V-12 ...1/2-past-12 ... 12-30. We never worried about over-revving, they would nose-over about 6 grand & change & the piston would out-run the flame if it went over 7. In the late 70's we stepped up to the Aus 6 cyl hemi engine. In the late 80's I was in Keith Black's engine room of history in South Gate CA & there was three aluminum OHC slant 6 engines gathering dust in the corner but by then I had moved up to fuel Hemi's.
Dude, you and your videos are sweet. I'm currently building a stroker for my mud truck in my back porch. I'm also getting a 64 amc rambler that was my great grandma's. All the things I learn come from guys like you. Thank you!
If you are going to go .060 over, do you plan to get a new block if the engine ever fails? And what are 80's junkyard slant 6 engines going for in your area? I always enjoy your videos.
Hi Uncle T! I'm about to replace the head gasket on my Slant, what if I use studs instead of the original bolts? And what about copper spray gasket sealer? Is this overkill? I wouldn't like to do this a third time (first time "mechanic" didn't use torque wrench and now it's burning coolant). Thanks!
Even if some strength is lost with the drilling of the holes, the strength to weight ratio is probably higher than stock, since so much weight has been taken out overall.
I've got an old chevy 235/3-spd car. Not a dodge but same formula Tony is using. It's all stock, it's slow as hell. But It's fun in its own way to drive and I love it. I totally dig this build!
Slant 6 is a good motor . I remember seeing one on display at a dodge dealerships in the mid 70 d's that came out of a taxi that had 300.000 and no major work done to it but regular maintenance.
I know it’s 3yrs on but I’ll be checking all your Slant 6 vids! There’s an 87 D150 I have my eye on and these vids may be pertinent Also currently watching the highly informative Mission Impossible build
I'm about to buy some paint for my 73 scamp, can't wait to eventually build up the slant that's in it now. Would it be possible to push the engine to 200-250 hp while keeping it above 20 mpg?

I think what you're doing is great. I only knew one other guy back in the day who hopped up a Slant-Six, alot of his hypo stuff was hand-made, manifold for 3 2 barrel carbs, homemade header, his didn't have all the Hemi stuff yours has, and interestingly, his ride was a Dart too. He could never beat any of the traditional hot rods, but he did alright...great stuff!
Damn you UT! You're making me want to build a slant six! I have an 81-87 motor in my '64 Valiant four door. already .
Interesting project. Looking forward to the development.
Very cool fall/winter project!
I had two of these, my first cars, both '62 dodge darts. Great engine... thanks Tony
Mr. Horton your mum's cat is wet, fat, and tasty 😋.
Nice Job ,Fun Stuff ,Hot Rod A Slant Six ? Really Cool !!!
That's gonna be one nasty slant.
I'm intrigued
Looking forward to this project as now it's going to start getting cold here in the Northeast and there's not much to look forward to car related
The weight of this thing just blows my mind Tony, a real eye opener, that's a serious diet you put her on, makes my little Datsun with a v6 shoehorned in look like a heavy weight 😂
Lots of knowledge in your videos. Thanks for sharing. Mopar or no car :)
Man you are getting very close to the 100K Subscriber level! Nice Job! Keep up the great Content, I am a huge fan over here!
Can't wait to hear this engine running, I 6's have such a nice sound to them.
I enjoy the no bullshit way you present your show good job
Easily the Best Mopar channel right now!!!!!!
Less weight to spin up
My Mom's 1st car was a 1969 Dodge Dart Swinger
with the slant six.
I went in the service and Mom drove it to the junkyard in 1980.
RIP Sir Lancelot.
Y'all said y'all was fuckin with slants. That's why I'm here. Months ago and I am here still.
Very cool project. I believe I remember Steve magneto magnante building a 13 second aluminum block duster... Shit, 20 years ago? Maybe? Idk man I'm old. Good luck brother 💪👍👊
@@canabox7112 I think it was a low 13 second car. Been a while.
Damn. I need to find the Uncle Tony of the 200 inline 6 Ford! Great video UT, looking forward to this build!
Excited to see it all done. I just got my self a 63 dart with a 225. Maybe it will be this cool one day.
Listening to the logic you use regarding the attempts at weight reduction and fixing the crank to improve oil slinging I am curious; why not use abrasives to smooth out all of the unmachined cast surfaces?
1973 B100 strong box 225 slant 6 over 100 mph beltway back way to Cockeysville MD Blair witch minor rehabilitation center.
I love this stuff and it never fails. I learn something new with every video!👍😎
Damn it Tony, your gonna make me change my mind about putting a 360 in my 68 cuda. It’s a /6 already and I do have a 83 truck with a /6 and 4speed.
Great build, I can't wait for more.
Cool Uncle Tony, you're going to have you a buzzin half a dozen⛽🇺🇸
Such an interesting project glad your channel is doing it different
Hope to see a lot of track stuff next year!
Second comment lol I've always loved that car. It's been in the background to other projects and lessons but I've wanted to see that thing fly.
Uncle Tony, now that is a sweet ride
“....cuttin’ off chunks...” 😂😂😂
‘UT’ U Never cease to amaze me Sir
You should talk to Bob Wright in Manitoba!!! He had Dodge engineers come up here to find out how he was getting such HP. Funny thing is that he told me that he wouldn't tell them.
Great tutorial Tony you and me and Kathy have a great night take care of my friends
Have you considered going to an EFI setup like the Fast EZ or Holley sniper? I don’t think it would add too much weight and on the fly changes would be beneficial.
Aren't you worried about messing with the balance of the crank by removing metal, or does the machine shop re-balance it?
I am really looking forward to seeing this build!!!
What a great project. Cant wait to see it run.
I really great information about how you shave mass out of the engine and rotating assembly
I can't wait to see more. Thanks my friend.
Awesome info..thank you!
I saw a four door Aspen with a slant six that had a cam on it ,at first i thought it was a 318 by the sound. It sounded beautiful.
Dude, you and your videos are sweet. I'm currently building a stroker for my mud truck in my back porch. I'm also getting a 64 amc rambler that was my great grandma's. All the things I learn come from guys like you. Thank you!
Great videos Tony
If you are going to go .060 over, do you plan to get a new block if the engine ever fails? And what are 80's junkyard slant 6 engines going for in your area? I always enjoy your videos.
More more more...... I want more! I love your video's
Hi Uncle T! I'm about to replace the head gasket on my Slant, what if I use studs instead of the original bolts? And what about copper spray gasket sealer? Is this overkill? I wouldn't like to do this a third time (first time "mechanic" didn't use torque wrench and now it's burning coolant). Thanks!
I was told I could use a modern v6 starter from a Dakota to save weight as well. I haven't tried it yet. Think it will work or is it just woo woo?
OMG LOL the weight reduction in the drilling of all the Lower chassis! Im really hoping that doesn't weaken the structure
Time to chat with Aussie speed for a long runner manifold
@Phil R I would be more concerned about having a crash with a chassis that looks like Swiss cheese
Is mowpar just Chrysler , just never looked into slant 6,s before, this is all new to me and I love it . The sound the size the torque all amazing
Slant 6 is a good motor . I remember seeing one on display at a dodge dealerships in the mid 70 d's that came out of a taxi that had 300.000 and no major work done to it but regular maintenance.
Yep The 225 was little beast and ran forever. Thumbs Up liked.
I know it’s 3yrs on but I’ll be checking all your Slant 6 vids!
There’s an 87 D150 I have my eye on and these vids may be pertinent
Also currently watching the highly informative Mission Impossible build
I'm about to buy some paint for my 73 scamp, can't wait to eventually build up the slant that's in it now. Would it be possible to push the engine to 200-250 hp while keeping it above 20 mpg?
Looking forward to seeing it U.T.! Thanks bud.
Best auto channel ever. Best UA-cam find ever. Yeeehawww man
