Writing goes beyond lyrics. The musical elements are written as well. If I write the melody, harmony or work on the rhythm, I have rights to a credit on the album. Drum programming, chopping samples, sound design, even suggesting changes to the song.

I mean i know Lauryn hill been lowkey disrespecting her fans by showing up to concerts late but to hear how demanding she is and how she treats her crew/ex-crew is shocking to say the least and I'm beyond disappointed. I hope not all what was said about her was true.
I believe Robert Glasper off the strength of how disrespectful Lauryn is to her own damn fans. I waited at least 1.5 hours to see her at AfroPunk and her renditions of the songs were nowhere close to the original track. I can appreciate a deviation from the original song but Lauryn's live songs were almost unrecognizable.
Secondly, Robert Glasper is an established artist and he should NOT have to audition for his peers. For example, could you imagine Chaka Khan asking Prince or Stevie to audition for the instrumentals in the 70s? Could you imagine Patti or Aretha asking Donny Hathaway to audition? That sounds ridiculous for any established artist. You either vibe with their music or you don't. It sounds like Lauryn was a perfectionist or either had no idea of what she wanted.
Ive seen her live and she's unwatchable.

ChrisJ Fox yeah IMO kamikaze was a solid project, nothing special, but it held its own. I liked 10/13 tracks. 7/10 IMO

But the miseducation lyrics are consistant with her lyrics and message prior to the miseducation (the score) and after the miseducation (do you like the way, turn your lights down low, here but gone, rebel, the mystery of iniquity and freedom time,) and its matches the way she speaks. There are many people (who were actually there, Rober Glasper was NOT) who say she wrote the album like pras, john legend, santana, commissioner gordon.

For Robert Glasper "writing music" means like the actual production and instrumentation I think. Not necessarily the lyrics. Like all the music Robert Glasper makes he is the band leader when it's his album
I respect y'all, but you need a musician's perspective on this one. You don't audition artists at a certain point, you either take them, or don't call them at all. You also need to have a level of trust with your band, like a family. If you're thinking about threataning your band or something like that, you should just fire them.
Robert Glasper & Terrance martin put on one of the best shows I've seen. I highly reccomend checking out one if their live shows.💯
This is a classic album...but it’s an R&B album. It’s not a hip hop album. For me, it doesn’t matter if she didn’t write all of it because it’s not a rap album. Does it tarnish her legacy? No. But treating people like shit and showing up late for her own shows is what has tarnished her legacy in my eyes. Robert Glasper’s interview actually made Lauryn type up a loooong ass response that she posted (you can google it). So, his words stung because she doesn’t do interviews and social media. I still love the album and I love her as an artist. But I’m not going to see her perform.
If Lauryn hill didn’t write miseducation can we assume she didn’t write her verses on fugees albums, like wyclef and prase did it all? Robert glapsers comments were stark when you consider she hasn’t followed up miseducation and likely wont
jordanpag97 that’s what I’ve been hearing recently, I read an article how others was writing all her Fugees lyrics and after they broke up she only had one album because no one wanted to work with her anymore. (write her lyrics) I don’t know how credible it was but The Score and Miseducation will still remain 2 of my favorite albums of all time no matter what.
Nah I'd be very surprised if she didn't write her lyrics! All these rumors & court case's have always been about her not crediting others for creating the music... The people that sued her were a collective of musicians.

jordanpag97 but is that logical? Lauryn was consistently superior to clef and pras on every single song with the fugees. And the lyrics on the mtv unplugged is believe it or not actually better than the miseducation. Its just not made with the goal of being "comercial".
If anything it would be more logical to think that lauryn hill wrote for wyclef and pras during the fugees era.
As soon as the fugees broke up. Wyclef and pras' rapping and lyrics immediately became sooo weak.

I have a hard time believing that Lauryn didn't write anything on her album. Are we also saying that she didn't write anything on the Fugee albums? I don't see how she went from killing it with the Fugees to having no skill what's so ever on her solo album...
Nobody said that did they? She helped write a good amount of it. She had allot of ghost writing as well though
Or she did her solo work and fugees work at the same time and after that nobody wanted to work with her and she had nothing to provide except for performing old stuff.

One of the people who sued Lauryn Hill (he actually has a video on youtube talking about making 'The Miseducation' saying he put the team together) told me in an email that Lauryn wrote on every song but the music was created as a Team.
Lauryn Hill was the Team Leader but everyone made contributions.
Another person who knows Lauryn Hill told me that the musicians (New Ark) were told what to play by Lauryn but they were allowed to give suggestions and contribute ideas also.
However, Che Guereva and James Poysner ( two other musicians who did not sue) and who are not part of New Ark said they had to redo most of New Ark's stuff "to make it stronger".
John Legend is quoted as saying that Lauryn Hill guided him a little and "she liked what I played" for "everything is everything"
@@gabrielbrewster107 Yes, and there was a musician who said that the sounds were in Lauryn's head, but since she can not play many instruments, it was their job to create the sounds. Maybe they should have been credited as musicians. Lauryn has always been extremely intelligent and socially aware. I doubt she would harm or be malicious to anyone on purpose. If Miseducation had not been the hit it became, I wonder if they would have still sued. I don't think Lauryn even knew what would happen. After all, their first Fugees album only sold 12 copies initially. Yes, 12 copies. Anyhow, I think Miseducation, great as it is, pales in comparison to her follow up album Unplugged 2.0. Lauryn is one of the best, if not the best lyricist ever. (I change my mind depending on my mood, the other one would be Alanis Morissette.)

they wanted to be creadited as producer/songwriters to collect royalties for live.
Che Pope n James Poyser did that Whole album n got a symbol on the back of the album for like 2 songs.
To make this program atleast do fact checks else this becomes a ‘gossip show’. Lauryn Hill was hired by Arista Records as a songwriter, she was hired to write songs for Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Mary J Blige. Also there was a settlement ( she did not lose the case) she settled after a 2 year battle with New Ark who were producers. She settled over production credits and not songwriting credits.
Settling is losing just out of court. You wouldn't settle if you think or know you can win the case
@@justice19xx31 Lauryn chose to settle because she was tired of fighting. After she settled New Ark went to her house to see if they were still "cool". Lauryn is very prolific and spiritual and believes in doing the right thing. After the album was successful, then New Ark came after her, though she had paid them for their work already in an agreement they had made. One of the musicians actually said that the sounds were in Lauryn's head, but since she doesn't play many instruments, it was their job to play the sounds Lauryn wanted... As far as song writing goes, some people feel that just because they add a few words to a song, they should be credited. Kelly Clarkson is on record saying that if she doesn't add something significant to a song written, she doesn't take credit. She even said that for her hit "My Life Would Suck Without You", though she made a significant contribution, refused to take credit so her name would not appear next to a songwriter she did not like.

Bassist Vere Isaac, who worked on the “A Rose Is a Rose” sessions with Hill and Aretha Franklin, filed suit against Hill last year in the Seventh District Court in New York. Isaac states in his complaint that he wrote the melody for the hit single. Isaac has retained Peter Harvey - who represented Nobles, Pugh and the Newtons - as counsel.

Are y’all forgetting the mtv unplugged album. The lyrics on that album were just as profound maybe even deeper than the miseducation. And that was a solo effort, she fired her whole team when that was out so I refuse to believe she didn’t write her album or her verses on the score.
She did , but she had major help from the other guys . The Unplugged is messy despite the lyrics . Her singing , her guitar playing (😮)none looks remotely close the what she said she did .
Just to clarify the whole lawsuit and the topic the fellas was talking about so there's details and the article to flush out EVERYTHING.

Saw her in Vegas last night, she killed it!!! Great cuffin show. Funny ish, she had to check her hype man a couple times, on the low. She played the OG tracks and had two beat changes on most she was on for hour and a quarter doors opened at 6, I got there at 9:15, she went on at 9:45
What about her song Zion? Her writing style for Zion is very similar to her album. I think she wrote majority of her album. She may have taken suggestions and had help with arrangements but I don't think she "stole" anything. I think the big wigs are doing all they can to discredit this woman because she refused to play their game. Robert sounds like a clout chaser to me. If someone stole my friend's music I darn sure wouldn't be going to work with them. Make it make sense. I think her persona has changed because of the adversity that she has faced. I don't know what tf people expect, she's human.

We did get another album, and the lyrics on that album were even better than Miseducation. You should listen to the MTV Unplugged album that Lauryn released. It does not have the production that Lauryn's album first does, but it is superior. Lauryn outdid herself. On Miseducation, it seems that the message got lost in the sound. Her second album though, the message is loud and clear.

Unpopular opinion: the lyrical problems that ruined Revival and Kamikaze were already present in Em's earliest work, it's just there was other good stuff that made it worth listening to.

Glascor didnt say she couldnt (didnt have the ability) to tune her guitar but that she couldnt (as in she thinks she is too big or egotistical to tune her own guitar so she delegated it to someone else)

Al B Sure actually produced the early music for Jodeci. He hooked up DeVante's demos. Lauryn didn't steal. She had those artists signed to contracts that they didn't understand and likely didn't read. They came back and sued because they couldn't promote the work without verifiable credits. She settled because it's easier to deal with and wasn't much of an expense compared to what she made and will continue to make from it. She didn't have more albums because of politics and business issues, and this wasn't the era of SoundCloud and such ease of independence. And the New Ark people haven't recreated that magic because her star power, image, storyline, vocal talent, popularity as an actress, etc had as much if not more to do with the content and musicianship

According to the track list, only four of the 16 songs had contributing writers. And then one song was written by someone else. But other than that she pretty much wrote everything else on her own or had someone help write
