What he needs to do is stay in his lane. He's been out of position an awful lot this year and given up some big plays by over-pursuing and losing his angle.
Sonny still has long way to go to be OSU caliber LB, misses LOTS of tackles in run game - he was unblocked on 2 blitzes in 2nd half everyone is overhyping…he needs to get much stronger and play smarter before can reach his potential as complete LB…he also has blown his assignments on numerous plays this year at LB which will eventually hurt OSU - I think A. Reese is better option at LB if playing a strong Run Game Opponent…
I would not call Sonny close to becoming elite. At this point, he's a 5th to 6th round draft pick. He still makes a lot of mistakes, takes bad angles and is still a ways away from developing the instincts and finer points of being a LB. He's a really good, long athlete who is trying to become a really good football player. There is a huge difference. He does well against one dimensional offenses like Iowa, but against dynamic offenses like Oregon and Indiana are where he can exposed. It is wild that Sonny only turns 20 this weekend, and this is his 3rd season in the program. Another year in the program next year at LB will really help. He still has potential to be great for that reason.
I wouldn't be surprised to see him go earlier than that in the Draft. He's athletic and young... NFL teams would love that. I want to see him back, but he ain't sliding that far
"Still makes a lot of mistakes" is a bit hyperbolic. I don't know how easy you think it is to play LB, but Sonny has made drastic improvement from week one to today. Even Darren Lee and Ryan Shazier had growing pains their 1st time out.
@@BulletProofSoul1029 This is wrong. Lee and Shazier were really good at LB their first year starting full time. Sonny needs to get a lot better and needs to deliver this Saturday.
@Youngboss1024 Darren Lee didn't even come in as a LB, he was a 3 star athlete who played QB. He needed polishing before being becoming a 1st Round Pick. The same issues some people are crying about when it comes to Sonny are a repeat of what was said about Lee and Shazier, there just wasn't the internet available to give a big voice to all the couch coaches; plus honestly, more people respected the process. Does Sonny need to improve, of course, but this is his FIRST YEAR playing LB and he's playing it on the #1 defensive team in the country. I'm mean, how easy do some of you guys think it is? Do you even understand or appreciate the work Sonny has put in to get to where he was at the beginning of the season to now? Not everything can be instant gratification, it's a process, and Sonny is doing what he needs to do to get better each day.
I hope he stays for his sr year. He isn’t a first round pick unless a team is enamored of his athleticism. He can develop into a first round pick next year though.
Sonny is getting to be a beast. Future Dave Robinson of Packer fame. Enjoy!
He's going to continue to get better and move himself into a 1st 2nd rounder in another year.
I'd like to see our two 5* LBs working in tandem: Sonny as the blitzing LB... and CJ off the edge. Is CJ our best edge rusher? 🤔
@@hollinsd He will have to play if Mitch continues to be out. Might as well use CJ off the edge for these next 2 games.
