  • For this entry in the Sly Cooper marathon, we take a look at Sly 2, a game almost completely different from the original but feeling like the next natural step for the series. And even though I played it after Sly 3, it didn't take away from the impact this story told. So join me as I talk about why Sly 2 is so awesome, won't you?

Same here for how well they executed a Sequel as well as it did and for how awesome everything went both Gameplay and Narrative wise it's definitely deserves to be among the best there is.

6:27 Missed opportunity to show Sly’s idle animation of using his cane to scratch his back while his foot twitches in satisfaction.

Murray has a lower voice in sly 2 because he's trying to sound tougher in his new muscle man persona. It deliberately sounds forced. Then in sly 3, he becomes more confident in himself and doesn't need to force it as much. I really like how his growth as a character is reflected across the games through his voice

To this day my biggest regret is ever doubting Sly 2 because I still remember way back in the day when I first heard of the Sly games around , I didn't think they'd be any good. I was a teenager when I first heard of the games and I just felt like the games would be nothing but very watered down, kid-friendly games and the Jak and Ratchet & Clank games still had their claws on me haha. So needless to say, I skipped out on the Sly series until around 2008 when I actually bought all 3 games at a Gamestop because they were on sale but yet I still didn't get around to playing the games until 2011. Sly 1's narrative actually surprised me and I felt like I truly made a mistake not playing these games sooner but when I got to Sly 2, holy crap was I thinking that even more!
Sly 2 was such a great sequel and I was so surprised with how immersed I got into the game. The story was so addicting and I totally didn't see he plot twist coming. The whole atmosphere of the game just felt very mature without being edgy striking the perfect balance that was good for any age really. I do agree that the whole "Clock-La" thing was totally stupid and was so ridiculous that it did kinda weaken the tension towards the final half of the game. I could buy her crossing Arpeggio but it would've been nice to at least have a boss fight with him before the inevitable double cross. But I really do like how this game shined a light on Bentley. I'll be honest, I wasn't too big on Bentley because while I appreciated his smarts, he just felt like someone who didn't really understand how dire it was for Sly and Murray to be out on the field so to have Bentley participate as well as his involvement in the Contessa chapters and Jean Bison boss, it was just amazing to watch his character grow (and actually have it stick in the 3rd game).
I feel like the only problem with this game was what you mentioned which was how you can't actually replay missions. If they had that, this game would've been the complete full package in my opinion. But as it is, I love Sly 2, it was the game that cemented me into the series :D

Awesome story, dude! Sly has that effect on people where they think it's one thing, but then they actually play it and it's so much more than you thought you'd ever get.

@@TheCartoonGamer8000 Haha agreed. If I could go back in time to talk to my younger self, I'd definitely tell him to play Sly Cooper. Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter are great but add Sly Cooper to the list LOL The fact that people still talk about these games really shows just how much of an impact they had and were just as relevant as R&C and J&D.

P.S. I also love the Canada stages, and not just 'cause I'm just a fan of snow and cold places - the music is great, the atmosphere is great, and Sucker Punch deliberately positioned the Canada levels just after Prague and before the climax as a way to both ease the tension from the borderline hysteric climax of Prague (with the utter chaos of the Contessa and Neyla's armies fighting each other, constantly switching between characters and ending in a bittersweet final cutscene of Carmelita still being on the run and the gang needing to quietly sneak out) and give a sense of calm before the storm, preceding the surreal ending on Arpeggio's fortress.

Sly 2 - to this day, I have to find a sequel that is as much of an improvement over its predecessor.
Especially, it's interesting to see just how much Sucker Punch managed to improve in just 2 years, and in how many fields. Aside from the "mascot platform" having finally plateaued in the early 2000s, with the original Jak & Daxter, the first Sly and a few sequels like Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, it's telling of Sucker Punch's love for the series how far they were willing to re-think their plan of action for the series come to the sequels. Reading up on interviews, it's clear that Sucker Punch was concerned with the divide between the concept of Sly and the gang being thieves, and what the gameplay of the first game was all about, and some minor stealth mechanics aside... you weren't really that much of a thief. Sly 2 does fix some of the issues relating to combat, what with both enemies and the player being able to take more than one hit, but also puts combat as the last option for Sly and Bentley, with just Murray being able to effectively take on multiple foes head-on, and offers a surprisingly fleshed out stealth system.
Visual and narrative presentation are also dramatically enhanced, from each mission being presented as a carefully thought-out plan that Bentley draws up and executes alongside Sly and Murray (ESPECIALLY during Jailbreak, where Bentley comes into his own and overcomes his skittish nature once he finds himself separated from his friends), instead of arbitrary levels. Each chapter isn't just a hub from which you go into the next level to progress into the story, it's part of a long-term plan to take possession of a Clockwerk part, from recon to the big heist itself, and it's also reflected in the Klaww gang itself - with the exception of Arpeggio and his flying fortress, you're no longer facing reclusive criminals who live far away from society, you're thrown into proper locations such as Paris or the heart of India, with the Klaww gang members keeping facades in public while running their devious operations. It's just like in my favourite genre of film: caper movies. High society and crime mixing together in intriguing stories.
In short, I'd define this game with two words: *GREASY SWEET* .

Fun fact: Alésia Glidewell, the voice of Carmelita and Neyla in this game, would go on to not only voice Krystal in Star Fox: Assault, a role she would reprise years later in Smash Bros. Ultimate, but also voice Zero Suit Samus and fellow Assist Trophy character Knuckle Joe starting from Smash Bros. Brawl all the way up to Ultimate.

    • @TheCartoonGamer8000

Truthfully, everything past Brawl is reused audio. Even Krystal’s audio is pulled from Assault. Still cool, though.

This! This game right here was what got me and convinced me to play and love these games! When I was watching SGB I thought it was the most funniest LP they did that I continue to support the series never got around to getting them until my friends at SNG got to LP the game on their channel was where I said that’s it I’m buying a PS3 with backwards compatibility and get all the Sly Cooper games! I went to find one at a good price along with the games and played it myself! Although I’m a newbie when it comes to PlayStation games this one is awesome and because of the Sly Cooper Series that I started looking into other Sony games and can’t thank this series and the second game enough for getting me hooked!

I’m surprised by the data wipe stuff. I played the solo release of the game on PS3, it performed fine for me, maybe it’s the collection specifically and not the HD ports. The only game on my PS3 I ever had data wiped on was Persona 4.

Hahaha Clock-La is definitely a really lame name, but I think that was perhaps their intention with it.
I may be biased as this was the first Sly game I played but after playing through all of them a few times now, I still view this as the best in the series.
There is definitely certain charms to each game that separates them from the other, and makes them all worth playing again and again though.

Your experiences with knowing how Bentley will end up in a wheelchair is a rare case where spoilers can craft a new, valid narrative. One that replaces some of the shock of that moment with dread and suspense in the anticipation of it.

Yes! Exactly! There have been many times where I haven't watched a show, and I know something happens to somebody in it, but I don't know how they got in that predicament. Then when I eventually get to the show and see it for myself, I'm still surprised but in a totally new way. It's really cool!
