    Trying it now, I stopped painting for 10 years, trying again. Thanks for sharing.

    Honestly, I loved the original version! But when I saw the result, I thought it was much more vibrant! I need to go through all my paintings I wasn't satisfied and redo them! Thank you!❤

      It's worth it to do so a few times a year. You will be suprised by how you artist's eye has changed.

    It's a good idea to repaint the alrady painted subject! It gives me courage when I am so disappointed aboit what i did on the canvas. With more knowledge I can paint it all over again!! Thanks Malcolm!

      Yes, try again and see what happens 😊

    I like the warmth in the 2nd painting over the coolness in the 1st version. Once I've declared a painting done, I tend to go on and paint it again on a new canvas if it really bugs me. But before I get to this point, I've usually fiddled with the 'original' version several times. I have some paintings that I messed with, generally repainting the same canvas, over a period of several years!

      Thanks, yes this approach helps us learn and grow as well.

    I actually liked the first one but I can see how the variety of colour especially of the same value has given the second one more interest. I have tried to overpaint but I don't use thick enough paint and also choose transparent colours without realising and they don't cover too well.

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 роки тому +2

      Yes transparent color, like "permanent" colors instead of cadmium leads to frustration in this case.

    Thanks again Malcom, I will try doing this with my paintings that are blah. I always thought it was the composition but a value change may also be the answer.

      Have fun Kathy - its surprising how we adjust over time to different color and vibrancy.

    Thank you for showing us this demo. I have tried fixing paintings by touching up areas, which usually looks like an afterthought, but what you have done is recharge the whole painting so it is harmonious. 👍🏻

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 роки тому

      Yes, I have noticed that touch ups lead to more work. Often best to the whole painting..

    One question did you have to put some linseed oil over the original first before you painted over it

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 роки тому +1

      It is a good idea as long as you wipe it down to avoid it being too slippery. In this case I did not use any oil - the surface was quite rough with previous impastos so I had no doubts about getting the paint on.

    I especially enjoyed seeing you use the bigger brushes…I would probably get out the 4 to start and go down from there…I’ll try harder! Thank you ! I also wondered about putting oil on the old painting first or at least using a bit of oil in the paint to satisfy the “fat over lean” principle? Cheers!

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks, yes you can lightly oil the dry surface. In this case the old painting was dry so it was like painting on a well primed panel. Completed in one go so no danger of irregular drying.

    I can’t put my finger on it as to why , but I prefer the first one.. Could it be because you wanted to paint looser with more light? Thanks!

    • @MalcolmDewey
      @MalcolmDewey  2 роки тому +2

      The first had a lot of good things, but the color notes were not clean and that removed the vibrancy. Some prefer the more subdued palette but I like painting to stand out more.

    Thank you for another excellent and inspiring video! I have a question: I want to refresh a painting I did but I have already varnished it (with satin varnish for oil paints). Can I paint over this varnish and then varnish it again in about six months or should I give it a miss? Thank you very much

    • @MalcolmDewey
