- Erin Gray is a television actress that is best known for playing the part of Colonel Wilma Deering on the beloved science fiction television program Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, as well as the theatrical film that preceded it. Prior to getting the role, Erin had been better known as a model. The role of Colonel Wilma Deering proved Erin’s big break in Hollywood, and she appeared in many other television shows after that seminal series came to an end.

Before getting her start in Hollywood, Erin had worked as a model in New York City. The star was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and grew up in California. She made the choice to move to New York City after dropping out of college, believing that the city was where she might be able to make a career for herself as a model. She had already worked as a model during her teen years in high school, having appeared in various commercial throughout Los Angeles.
Erin had attended college for a few years with the hopes of getting a mathematics degree before dropping out and pursuing modeling in New York City. While living in New York City, she routinely flew out to Los Angeles and auditioned for acting roles. She eventually got a role in the 1978 miniseries Evening in Byzantium. The role impressed Universal Studios, who signed the budding star to a seven-year contract. The following year, she made her debut as Colonel Wilma Deering on Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.
Today, Erin continues to work in the entertainment industry and likes to take every opportunity she can to share with fans about her fond memories working on Buck Rogers in the 25th Century with costar Gil Gerard, who played the titular character of Buck Rogers. Met her at a comic con, she was a surprise replacement guest so I didn’t know she was going to be there. Came back the next day and got her to sign my Buck Rogers dvd set and she was incredibly gracious and more than willing to talk about the show with me for a bit. Still beautiful too.

The biggest mistake they made was making Buck Rogers a Star Trek rip off in season 2, thereby eliminating Princess Ardala. That could have been a long running series just based on the conflict between Earth, and the Draconian Empire. Plus many more years of seeing space bikinis...
@@deangullberry5148 I agree.. and this can at least partially be blamed on Gil Gerard. He wanted the show to take a more serious tone and felt Buck was too much of a comedic wise-ass.
I've always liked her in all her roles. I always feel she conducted herself very professionally. God Bless her on her life in the future and her family as well.
She qualifies to be a friend of my late Mother's. Though not a TV Mom on Silver Spoons, she certainly acted mother-like. Therefore she looks like a mother figure.
I love watching Buck Rogers when I was a kid and Wilma was my favorite on the show. Her and Gil Gerard they was good together.
Erin was a beautiful woman. I met her at San Diego Comic Con a long time ago. I was having an evil laugh off with Clive Revill. Surrounded by several actors making personal appearances at the con. Erin was leaning over my left shoulder and she was pressed against my back. Her presence had an effect on me. I turned my head to look at her and said, "You are killing me here!" It was only way I could think to compliment her and let her know the effect she was having on me. She was very gracious and considerate.
Ah, was that around the time when Clive Revill was playing the role of Vector on the Wizards and Warriors tv series? That show was a personal favorite of mine.

Shows like this made TV fun. You could watch it with the whole family and everyone would get something out of it.
I always wondered what happen to Erin after Buck Rogers she seemed to disappear. It is nice to know she didn't fall into drug addiction like so many actresses of that time period. Thank you.

Often forgotten is Erin's role in Six Pack with Kenny Rogers and Born Beautiful (TV Movie) with Lori Singer about a model who becomes "too old to sell things" and becomes a fashion photographer, seeing the fashion world from behind the lens. That, to me, was her best role. She frequents the San Diego Comic-con and has always been great with her fans.
Nobody remembers Six Pack... shit, I hardly remember it beyond that one summer when it got heavy rotation on HBO in the mid 80s... but what I do remember was watching it every time I stumbled upon it while flipping channels just because of a few scenes of Erin Gray in lingerie. (In hindsight, I doubt it's worth seeking out just for those few brief scenes... I can't imagine it's anything that revealing... but hey... I was like 13 years old at the time. )

Erin’s ability to flow from acting serious to humor I’ve always liked, wether it was Buck Rogers to Guesting on Magnum P.I. I forgot that she was opposite to Ricky Schroder on Silver Spoons.,of course I was kid then when watching “Spoons”. I was glad to hear she stayed very loyal to her kids, when you lose time with your Son daughter or niece that’s time you don’t get back! Just makes me love and respect more of what she has accomplished over the years.
I adored Erin Gray on Silver Spoons. Yes, she was more iconic in Buck Rogers, but I greatly enjoyed both shows. I was born in the mid '70s and she really was a favorite in my childhood.

This was my favorite TV show when I was a kid and I still watch it from time to time.

I can recommend Erin's Tai Chi classes that she sometimes gives at conventions. Even if you have no real thought about Tai Chi or care to pursue it afterward, you'll learn something from the experience
It's a shame that the show ended too soon. So much could have been done with it, but somebody decided to take it down the very wrong path.
Wrong path? Hell they were tripping over uncleared unmarked rubbish strewn territory. Want didn't help in our area if I'm remembering correctly is the night it was supposed to be on it kept getting pre empted for hockey. I know Buffalo is not a major area for Nelson but still we would have lost a lot. We were part of the Nelson family back then so we weren't able to give a mark for viewing. Not sure when that weeks episode was shown, sometimes it was Saturday afternoon or Sunday late or whenever they wanted to put it on. For you younger people this was an flawed way of determining TV ratings. I think there was 1200 of us across the country. It's been a long time so anyone with better knowledge jump in. And to our younger folks, yes this was a stupid way to count people watching a show. We even thought so at the time.
The blame falls onto John Mantley and Calvin Clements. Glen A. Larson understood the character and the first season was a brightly colored comic strip romp. Mantley and Clements wanted to make a new Star Trek.
It ended cause of the stupid second season on the Searcher. Show went to hell then. I loved that show when they were in New Chicago

Well there is one simple word which describes Miss Gray. That would be "gorgeous." You could be passing through your family room, tv on, see her wonderful face and you'd be planted in the first chair to stare. An absolute magnet of beauty, and I won't apologize for objectifying her. I'm happy to see that she is doing well and wish her the very best.
Wow, never knew she was a math major when I watched the original show as a teen! All that beauty, acting talent, good personality, and sex appeal, plus a big brain too? That combination is incredibly rare.

In 1951, at age 5, I was on an early t.v. show "The Buster Crabbe Show" & interviewed with two
other older boys by Buster! He starred as both "Buck Rogers" & "Flash Gordon" in movie serials
of the late 1930's & early 1940's! To me, the "Buck Rogers" t.v. show was a pale imitation of
those serials, but Erin Gray was beautiful enough to continue watching!

Yup ! Those tights (spandex) really did the trick.

Having met her a few times at conversations; I can tell you even today she is still extremely beautiful! She is super nice! Answered my questions and truly seemed to enjoy being there!
My first experience with Buck Rogers was in 1982. I was in tech school and on one of the movie nights, they screened one of the episodes in a place called "The Fish Bowl." After that, I tried to catch every rerun I could find. My parents would never let me watch it when I was living with them. I've seen Star Trek Continues. I'm going to have to watch that again. I did not recognize her in the series. I did see Grant Imohara (from MythBusters) in his roll as Sulu. I was also fascinated by the fact that James Doohan's son played Scotty.

In Star Trek Continues, Erin was a highly ranked officer that contacted Kirk from Star Fleet via a video transmission. I don't recall if they ever had her off world with the crew. She was rather stern with Kirk as I remember. She might have had more of a role casting actors for the series than as an actor in the series.
The only problem I had with Buck Rogers was that they only had two seasons. They should have made at least three. I loved the show.
It might have done if it wasn't for Gill Gerrard being an egotistical ass.
Season 2 and season 1 were 2 completely different shows. Season 1 was pure cheese, season 2 they turned her into an ice cream girl. Birdman stepped into the role of col Deering and she was completely wasted. Every second of Erin in that spandex suit during season was pure gold.
My grandmother took me to the Theater to watch the movie form of Buck Rodgers. I was instantly hooked. When the series came out, I was all but glued to the TV when it came on.

Buck Roger’s future in the 25th was quite different than the 25th century depicted in movie Idiocracy.
One of the luckiest days of my life happened due to a failed business venture. I was doing paperwork at home and didn't get up to turn off the TV when a local horror movie host started his show. At some point he announced he would be appearing at a convention in Cleveland, Ohio with actors from some of my favorite TV shows. I told myself that I would treat myself to making the 50 mile trip there and back if I got enough work done. I was surprised that I hadn't heard anything about the convention from any other source and couldn't even verify online that the convention was actually happening. The next day, I was in downtown Cleveland looking for the building that the convention was to be in. Big events were going on but there was nothing about the convention. I expected that I had wasted my time. But sure enough, there was a sign by the elevator and up I went to the Con Tiki something or other. I was shocked that there was a convention with maybe 5 or 10 visitors - lots of staff but almost no one there to buy tickets. Celebrities sat at tables with no one to talk to unless there was another celebrity table close by. I would talk for what felt like too long with a celebrity and excuse myself thinking I didn't want a celebrity to tell me to go away. The opposite happened - they called me back to keep talking with them. There were some I knew from movies that I didn't even approach because I didn't feel I had anything to say. When I saw Erin Gray I said hello and asked if she had been on this one short lived series I remembered. She hadn't been but she didn't take offense. We talked quite a while and she asked what made me come to this convention when so few others decided to. I told her I wanted to talk to some of the "Smallville" cast members and say more to Michael Rosenbaum about a series of stories I wrote for an alternate universe version of Smallville that I had hoped the WB (later the CW) would launch. She said she would like to hear about it. "Really?!" She said yes, so I gave her a very detailed pitch after which she said that she was impressed and to not give up on my dreams. Edward James Olmos (from Battlestar Galactica) overheard and said something like "Kid, never share an idea with anyone in the business unless you have an ironclad contract. Otherwise, they'll steal your idea and say it was theirs and you won't see a penny from it." I told him that I would just be thrilled to have my idea used whether I got any money from it or not. He replied that I would care eventually when someone was getting wealthy on my ideas. Anyway, Erin was so kind and unbelievable attentive. I'm used to being the guy that no one even realizes is around and she made me feel like she considered me to be worthy of her time. Of course, she had time to kill that day. I later found out that the person that organized the convention had thought that the people he had rented the space from would be handling all the promotions for the event but they had no intention to. So there were no print ads and the only reason it was on TV when I was watching was a local TV host's self promotion (and he didn't even show up!). For me, it was like winning the lottery and I don't think my ticket even cost me that much ... probably less than $25.
By the way, she was wearing granny glasses so I wonder how many of the few that were at the event even knew who she was.
That, sir, is a great story. The organizer's screw-up basically gave you a unique opportunity to have your own private convention. Two questions: 1) Did you talk with Ms. Grey about Buck Rogers or Silver Spoons? 2) Did you talk with EJO about BSG or any of his other work? I have always wondered what EJO thought about the (in my view, disastrous) shift in BSG in the last 1 1/2 seasons to stories about Cylons and stories more suitable for LOST (mysteries, puzzles, mysticism, etc.)
@@jasonthewatchmansson8873 I don't remember what discussions I might have had with them about their shows. It probably wasn't much. I wasn't expecting to see either of them so I was totally unprepared. And the only question about Erin's past work that I remember was if she was on a failed series about 3 women trying to make it as a singing group. Since she wasn't, that misfire probably kept me from asking her much about past roles. She was more into what she was doing at that point in her life which was managing other talent.

I'm a Silver Spoons fan and I will always know her for her role as Katherine "Kate" Summers Stratton who played Joel Higgins' Edward Stratton III's Secretary, then Girlfriend, and eventually his 2nd Wife; also playing Ricky Schroder's Stepmother about halfway through Season 3 of the Series.

I met her and Gil Gerard following the 2010 Buck rogers web series at SDCC. They had showed up to show the pilot episode and explain as an apology to their fans why the series they had been promoting wasn't going to happen. No apology was necessary from either of them as they weren't at fault.
I loved watching Buck Rogers , it used to be shown early Saturday evening In the UK, I always thought that it was rather cheesy, but I never missed an episode thanks to the incredibly gorgeous Erin Grey .
I never saw her acting or modeling however in my 35 years working in film and television it was common for studios to sign prospects to 7 year contracts mainly for control not only did they have you at a bargain price to have you work on select projects over seven years they could also keep you from working for any one they felt were competitors of theirs. For some actors it helped their careers however mostly it could kill your career.

TBH I never liked Mulgrew's "Elementary School Principal In Space" take on being a Star Trek captain. I think Erin would have been much better in the role. The scripts would still have been mediocre, but the show would have been more watchable without a schoolmarm in charge of the ship, IMHO.
Chakotay's name would have been changed to, "Buck Rodgers Chakotay."

I first saw her on Buck when her squadron intercepted him. My first thought was, "Wow my type of woman! Listen to her Buck she can kick your a$$. She was a strong woman, just like the ones on BSG. I hated what they did to her in the second season, putting her in the space stewardess outfit. While Hawk was OK we had Colonel Deering to kick butt and Buck to clean up the mess. If they had kept the same format Buck Rogers could have went on for many seasons, I believe.
Always reminds me of "Duck Dodgers in the 24th and a half Century"...lol.

In 1986 Erin appeared on the TV series Starman opposite Robert Hayes (Airplane!). It was based on the 1984 Jeff Bridges film of the same name. She played Jenny Hayden, the role originated by Karen Allen in the movie. She was in only one episode. Had the show not been cancelled she may have become a series regular.
She was great on the Rockford Files episode “With the French Heel Back…Can the Nehru Jacket Be Far Behind”.

Now, Erin is an intelligent actress whom used her body AND brain. From all accounts Erin is a genuinely decent and gracious person. One of the few Hollywood Actresses that possesses REAL CLASS.

With all the reboots, for every show under the sun. Why has this not been given the movie or reboot treatment? With modern special effects, this would be a much better show now.

While the August 1928 edition of "Amazing Stories" did have part of Nowlan's _Buck Rogers_ in it, the cover art isn't Buck Rogers in his antigravity jetpack as some think. Instead, the cover art is from E.E. "Doc" Smith's serial _The Skylark Of Space._
The scene depicted is that of protagonist Richard Seaton testing a small test model of the atomic copper star drive he and his friend M. Reynolds Crane (pictured at bottom right, with Seaton's fiancee, Dorothy Vaneman) invented, at Crane's own airfield near Chevy Chase, Maryland. The glowing cylinder under the hand grip is supposed to be the bar of atomically-stimulated copper metal, but this is an error. The actual bar was described in the text as being in a gimbal frame mounted on Seaton's helmet.
I still keep my Buck Rogers dvd set handy for when I fancy an evening on my own with some very entertaining,light entertainment. Col.Deering and Princess Ardala cheer me up no end!
