  • Are online "unsearched" wheat penny rolls a good bargain? How about Penny Rolls with GREAT end coins?
    In this video I purchased a roll of pennies that a seller from eBay inherited from their mother's estate. I noticed they had good feedback, were a trusted seller and made no claims to anything other than what you see as the end coins - One was an 1867 Indian Head Cent and the other was an S Mint Indian Head Cent!

    Hey Rob. Cool opening! People have been selling rolls like this on eBay since I was a teenager. It's a huge market now.
    As I'm sure you know, it's mostly fun and games, and risky to pay more than what the enders are worth.
    The stories have been the same for the last 15 years. lol
    Also, for the Indian heads, there are some other variables which can increase the grade. The liberty lettering is not conclusive (only a reference point). You actually sell yourself short on the grading. The feather tips (which I've found to be the most important factor), plus the lines in the shield, arrows, and the ridges around the rim come into play when giving it an overall. If you sent the 1867 in for grading, I would honestly be surprised if it came back lower than F-12. And would guarantee not less than VG-10. On some of the older bronze indian heads (pre 1886 type 2) they wore down slightly different. You can even have coins that have a couple of the middle liberty letters not 100% clear and still grade in the VF range. It just depends on the feathers and some of the other details. I need to do a video on indian heads. They're one of my favorite coins in higher grades (I especially love the older ones) and it's the type of coin I've traded the most during my collecting years. I used to buy tons of dark and damaged semi-key dates with XF-AU details and flip them slowly over time for 200-500%+ profits. I've even resold environmentally damaged metal detector finds on ebay that just needed better pictures to show the hiding details. :)

      Hey Nice hunt brother...Dang that was well worth the price, how much did you say again? Also, I missed the sellers name? LOL... I love hunting wheaties, I just recently paid 45 dollars for about 12 lb.s of wheaties (local estate auction) and did well. 1 1909VDB, 5-1909 some 1929, 1930, 31, 33 BUs. I probably had 2 lbs of teens, 2 lbs of 20's, about 2 rolls of 30's and all the rest were 1940s and 50s. But had some really nice coins that made my wheatie album much fuller and prettier. But I am really hurting for early S mints. Nice video and as always Happy Hunting brother.

      I've seen people selling rolls of Morgan Silver Dollars with cc enders and people pay over a thousand dollars for the rolls. I've heard stories that some people will put a few good in rolls and trick people. I've also heard that some people have found really good coins.

    That's great that the seller's mother just happened to put the S-mint Indian cent on one end, with the reverse showing, and the 1867 with the obverse showing on the other end. What a coincidence.

The same for the last 2 , one roll had 4 within and 2 ender's. Was very happy with shipment overall. Love your videos, I'm learning new things from them, thank you and bless you.

      +matt schwope It's worth less than $217, for sure, but the seller was smart enough to throw in some decent CNs and early Wheats. They're not worth that much, but it makes the roll look better. I think most sellers would put nothing but 40s and 50s Wheats in the middle of the roll. That 1908-S is awfully marked up, even for its relatively low grade. I wouldn't buy it unless it was going for like $30 or something, but I'm awfully picky on condition.

    @RFT, the 1860's indians are actually much higher grade they you think. The 1860's indians were plauged by poor strikes and with the exception of the 1867 were all VF25 or above. The 1908'S I'd grade at XF40. The bluebook grading guide is very poor because it doesn't consider die state, or quality of strike. For indians, pay particulae attention to the feathers in the headress. Yours have partial diamonds with signifigant detail remaining. Furthermore, on the 1861 it had two reverse retained cuds (RCD). Not trying to be cynical. I started working at an LCS and picked up on a lot of this stuff. IMO the 1867 is F-15, not G-VG.

    One problem when you go about pricing those coins is that's a very high end estimate and 2 that's for problem free coins. That 1861 looks like it's been cleaned. Also that 19 0 8 is definitely cleaned. Unfortunately in that condition it isn't worth anywhere close to that number. Actually picked up an XF in that year that was barely cleaned NGC graded for 55 bucks

    I've bought a lot of nice roll enders on ebay....be careful. I'd be happy with what you got (sounds like you are), but for everyone else out there...listen up. When buying these rolls, you are bidding on the enders only! You can expect dog crap in between....maybe a nice shiny with an unattractive scratch. If they are enders with just nice reverse showing (wheat's) expect those to be both 1958 and lots of garbage in between. You can catch some nice coins...but remember, you're bidding on the ends only.

    I wonder if they tracked who you were and saw you had a decent following so they juiced the contents up a bit. That would explain the different ends than they had in the posting.

    • @1Long2Short
      @1Long2Short 5 років тому

      Good point! Looking at their completed auctions, almost every roll has desirable enders on both ends. Why aren't any of the enders more common wheat pennies? What are the chances that every roll they sell has great enders by accident?

    • @moosesox
      @moosesox 5 років тому

      Zero percent. The story doesn’t even check out. Clearly this person’s “mother” thought that 40s and 50s wheats should be saved. Why then is there not a majority of these dates? They are the most common. If she was randomly filling up rolls, then the most recent and plentiful coins should be in there. And if she was supposedly pulling these out of circulation from the bank a long time ago, shouldn’t the younger wheats look uncirculated? If it is too good to be true, it probably isn’t. Rob just got the upgrade pack.

    Fun to watch you open one of those... no doubt the seller could have put together a much worse roll than that. A Flying Eagle Cent and a couple Copper Nickel Indian Cents are pretty cool.

  • @bigapplebucky
    @bigapplebucky 5 років тому

    Kind of odd that all the 50's looked so worn but there were no memorial cents and many of the IHC looked equally worn, not worse. Did the seller know you or that you would video the hunt on UA-cam? If (s)he did, the loose ends of the roll might have been because the flying eagle and the 1861 were added.
    It's not that you were foolish to buy a "S IHC" ender. I've done the same thing twice. Also the vdb cent and 1916 dime enders. I do have all three coins, but had to buy the 1909 S vbd and 1909 S IHC on eBay and I inherited the 16 D from my grandfather.
    Still, it is fun to look.

    It always seems a little suspicious (or a lot suspicious) when you search an eBay roll and the two best coins are the enders. It could be COINcidence, but the mathematical odds are very low. The odds of one of the two best coins being at one of the ends is 4 in 50, as there are two best coins and two end positions in a 50-coin roll. The odds of the other best coin being at the other end are 1 in 49, as there are 49 remaining places in the roll for the second coin to be. Calculated together, the odds of both best coins being at each end are 1 in 612. Hopefully I didn't screw up those statistics too badly. Regardless, you can see how low the odds are.
    The reality is that many of the eBay rolls are "rearranged," if not also cherry-picked. Sellers will put premium coins at the ends to maximize the bids, but still leave a few decent finds in the middle of the roll to keep the buyer from being totally disappointed. Looking at this eBay seller's past auctions, most of the penny rolls had desirable Indian heads or flying eagles on the ends... with very few (if any) having more ordinary wheaties on either of the ends. (In contrast, note how many ordinary wheaties were in the middle of Rob's roll.) The couple of auctions that do show a Lincoln penny are ones with keys dates, including one that is a 1909-S. (Can you really believe a seller would see a 1909-S ender and NOT pop open the roll to check the reverse for the VDB?) If these rolls haven't been rearranged, where are the rolls with more common wheaties on one of the ends? What are the odds that nearly every roll in this collection has desirable coins at both ends? Sure, the seller's Mom could have been a VERY discriminating coin collector, but did she really pass over a roll with a flying eagle on one end just because the other end only had a common wheatie? Seems pretty unlikely!
    I'm glad Rob was happy with his purchase, which is all that matters. But he purchased wisely, basing his bid on what he could see. Less educated buyers could easily overspend based on the enders they see, assuming the rest of the roll is equally good.

    • @jonathancampbell5523
      @jonathancampbell5523 5 років тому

      Sellers just put tempting coins on the ends for the pictures. The actual roll you get will be filled with coins that reflect the value of the final high bid. The sellers want to keep the buyers happy while moving coins that are difficult to sell individually. They are not going to lose money and that means the buyer is not going to find a rare and expensive coin. This is just a marketing ploy. There is no such thing as an unsearched roll. The tales that the sellers tell about getting the rolls from their grandmother or a bank manager are just yarns that no one will ever be able to verify.

    Flying eagle was sweet... And you got way more indian heads than i would have expected.. I have bought those type of rolls on ebay before.. Got 1good roll once.. The rest were clearly tampered with and aside from the indian enders... Contained all 1956 to 1958 wheats😂 but we still try... I would say that seller seemed legit... Even your wheats were alot of pre 40s.
