I've always ran 26" but my 2002 Santa Cruz Super 8 is 24"rear and 26" front with avalanche suspension. I'm keeping it "era correct" and it still sends!
Jordan, I'm curious, do you see a noticeable advantage of 27.5" over the 26" and if so, how much and in what way? I imagine the rolling resistance is better for speed and the larger diameter is better for rolling rock gardens but how's the cornering? And can it take the abuse the Mag30's can? I'd love a response or even video idea?
Back when I was a kid me and my mates decided to put an 16 inch wheel of a bmx on a 26inch mtb. Pulling wheelies on it was an arsehole twitching experience. You'd pop it up then as you came back down it felt like you were going to face plant over the handlebars 😅 even took it down our local trails. It didn't end well🤕😄
In the mid to late 90s a lot of mountain bike industry people thought that bikes would evolve to smaller wheel sizes as suspension technology improved. Boy were they wrong.
My little brother rides park with a 2004 bighit, 24/26 combo. It's still a very viable option on the lifts. Leaves you feeling better than my 5010 the next day forsure
26 inch wheels will be the next trend/standard to be pushed by bike brands when the 29 and 27's run out of steam. They will market the "new" size as lighter and more agile lol. Everything old is new again.
I'm glad you made this comment, I had this thought too! 26" will make a comeback. Or have a retro, nostalgic or revisited status. But I'm still riding 26" even now, no plans to change to larger wheels ever!
Not. 29ers have cemented their niche, and my personal experience with 27.5 matches that of the biggest advocates for it. The only reason I'm still on 26 at all is because the frames I wanted last fall were 26 only. It won't happen, but it'd be hot for me to have the first 27.5 lowrider!
I've ridden 26,27.5,and29er bike and i would say 26ride smoothest the most on downhill riding but 27.5and29 has the advantage on smooth and longer rides. But for this kind of terrain (on the vid) a 27.5 will work best. All of them has pros and cons so if you say 26 is the best then you should try other sizes too.
Went to 27.5" about 8 months ago. My 26" was faster on the tight corning style trails. So easy to to get the bike to lay over and snap back and forth...much fun!

Peaple say that these are faster yet pro riders are rocking 29er downhill tyres and they get even faster with bigger wheels maybe due to the size of the rider as well
@@jonathanoxlade4252 Maybe when they say faster they mean more agile and unstable. A larger diameter will give you more speed on straights but they're harder to throw around in turns.
I think a person's perception of what wheel size they like can largely come down to where they live and what the riding is like. Here, where i ride on the east coast, it's lots of rocky, rooty, quick spurt up and down single track. Its quite technical, and sometimes you fight for every yard you make. I went from 14 years on a 26er to a 27.5 for a couple years, and loved it. I then agonized over trying out a 29er, afraid that I wouldn't like it. I've been on a 29er since 2016, and I would never go back.
Last year I used to ride a scott gambler, it was slightly big for me but it had a frame that could fit 26 and 650b wheels. So when I cracked the rear rim and I had no time to buy a new one I put my old 26" wheelset on it. It felt way better! I always complained about weight and geometry but that day I had a great time hitting jumps and berms. Sometimes I miss it but now I'm happy with my 650b Wilson

It felt really nimble like 26s but picked up speed really quickly and coasted forever. The 29er just felt wrong it didn't make you want to get too adventurous. Was very quick on road though.

My son just raced a cross country race with 26 inch wheels on a 2007 rocky mount bike the other day . Going against modern bikes . I noticed on strava that most of the top 10 results on pevine mountain was 2015 and older . Bikes have not gotten faster pedaling with modern geometry and more suspension . Maybe the only real benefit is on push the limits type of downhill and that is fine but thats not what most of us do

Never felt the need to go with a bigger wheel. I started with bmx bikes and moved into dh biking in the early 2000s with a 26/24 big hit and then a 26/26 scott voltage later on (still my current bike). I have taken that thing on everything whistler has to offer and the north shore and never once said to myself " I need bigger wheels".
My 07 banshee scream has full 26” wheels, S-Type up front, MAG-30 rear. But with the monster T’s I’m always going into auto pilot off of drops and jumps
I'm still using 26 when try out the 29 in trail I'm scared it's to tall to me and cannot maneuver or maybe need more practice so I decided stick in 26 wheelset I have no problem
I have an GT Force 3.0 2009 The bike comes from factory with an 140mm travel fork, but the fork died and i cant find the same or similar with the 26'' size, so im considering put 27.5'' fork with 160mm travel and keep 26'' wheel, but im afraid of affecting in a negative way the geometry of the bike. Can you tell me if ill have any kind of problem with that change?
well a 27.5 fork that is 160mm is much longer than the 140mm 26" fork, so that will definitelyraise up the front end slackening the bike up. There is a certain point where it may be too much for your bike, but what about a 140mm 27.5 fork? that should be just fine, won't change things too much with the same 26" wheel on it.
I grew up on 26 inch and like the acceleration and agility over taller rims. Tried 27.5 and they feel ok but had to get used to them. 29 inch wheels I felt like I was on a clown bike. Different strokes for different folks,Ill stick with my 26.
And a fragile rear wheel. Don't do it, run a mullet, but don't go plus. (I've got a bike set up like this and bent the rear wheel, a WTB rim, on the first or second ride.)
@@2dcutout I have been racing MTB for 20 odd years & tried every wheel size, do not agree, plus is so much fun, do not knock it till you have tried everything
@@Aljonone1 I have, I've tried exactly what he was talking about 27.5" front, 26"+ rear, as I said, it made for a fragile rear wheel, straight 26" on the back is a better answer than a plus wheel imo. I've also tried 27.5+, which I didn't like. And 26 front and rear at the beginning of this year, and 29er, and back to 27.5 now. The only thing I've not tried recently is 29 front, 27.5 rear, although I tried that on an XC bike 2 or 3 years ago too
I don't see a point of doing that with big bikes, but I built myself a modern iah XC bike on an older 29er frame by putting 27.5 wheels on an a longser fork, it's nicely stable and balanced with slack enough head angle this way :) I did this to save money really.
It's fun to check out your videos you are getting a lot faster with more control and confidence. I'm not sure what your trying to do off the jumps. You really should think about being smooth without trying to do the cross up stuff just saying. Keep up the good work
,used to ride a heavy DH Iron horse with 26er (dmr wheels) and a nukeproof DJ while we had the earthquakes ,a lot of broken gnarly roads that even my 29 counldnt handle
I have done some me messing about with wheel sizes! My levo is 26+ rear & 27.5+ front works great! My fat bike has 24"x 4" on the rear, bigger problem is getting good tyre in that size!
Nice vid. I think its more about the geo of modern bikes than the wheel size. When comeing from 27,5 back to my 26 it feels like a kidsbike. But if they build 26" with longer reach, steeper seat and topangle... why not?
Dude that looks so fun. Not sure I'm there yet did my first trails a few weeks ago, here in australia and I was hooked, absolutely loved it, the adrenaline was amazing, i noticed I was losing control on all the jumps and my bike kept twisting to the side, so i did a little research online and some people suggested getting a shorter stem and i did and it absolutely helped with my jumps, im always looking for better ways to make jumps easier and smoother, i would love to give a smaller wheel set up a go. Note I am using a Marlin 5 trek , hard tail, cant afford a duely at this stage. But what do you think, thanks, loving the channel, gets me pumped to attack some dirt jumps or trails.
I'm looking at a bike, it has 24" wheels, I'm completely new but I can get it cheap. For down hill tech routes, what would you say is the acceptable distance from floor to lowest point on a bracket, and also the best distance? Would really appreciate your thoughts
@@flash2k I'm not really an expert in that. It depends on the track. The lower the better but high enough to not crash at the biggest rock/stump. Are 24" tires still available? in 26" there is a quite big variety.
@@BuffTip This is also a flawed test. On a true 26" bike, the bottom bracket is above the axles to help with ground clearance. on a 27.5" bike, the bottom bracket is below the axles. the bottom bracket being below the axles only helps cornering, and plus having almost 2lb heavier 26" wheels, isn't making the bike maneuver quickly in the corners, but having a lower COG will.
Conclusion: 26" is tons of fun!! Who loves their 26" wheels!?

My 07 banshee scream has full 26” wheels, S-Type up front, MAG-30 rear. But with the monster T’s I’m always going into auto pilot off of drops and jumps
I'm still using 26 when try out the 29 in trail I'm scared it's to tall to me and cannot maneuver or maybe need more practice so I decided stick in 26 wheelset I have no problem
I have an GT Force 3.0 2009
The bike comes from factory with an 140mm travel fork, but the fork died and i cant find the same or similar with the 26'' size, so im considering put 27.5'' fork with 160mm travel and keep 26'' wheel, but im afraid of affecting in a negative way the geometry of the bike.
@@JordanBoostmaster I'll check that out, thanks for you opinion
Really appreciated 🤘🏻
I grew up on 26 inch and like the acceleration and agility over taller rims. Tried 27.5 and they feel ok but had to get used to them. 29 inch wheels I felt like I was on a clown bike. Different strokes for different folks,Ill stick with my 26.
I think you should go back to 27.5 on the front & 26"+ on the rear, can get same bb drop with an off set bush on the shock!
The only thing I've not tried recently is 29 front, 27.5 rear, although I tried that on an XC bike 2 or 3 years ago too
Even wet your getting great traction. Are the trails that grippy?
Those trails are amazing!
I don't see a point of doing that with big bikes, but I built myself a modern iah XC bike on an older 29er frame by putting 27.5 wheels on an a longser fork, it's nicely stable and balanced with slack enough head angle this way :) I did this to save money really.
I can tell you pack a dab rig for the trails as well lol
This park looks so sick!
It´s not the wheels it´s the rider skills that make the difference
Sick! Love the Content!
It's fun to check out your videos you are getting a lot faster with more control and confidence. I'm not sure what your trying to do off the jumps. You really should think about being smooth without trying to do the cross up stuff just saying. Keep up the good work
Lets see a video where you put 27.5” on the front and 26” on the rear I’ve always wondered how that works
,used to ride a heavy DH Iron horse with 26er (dmr wheels) and a nukeproof DJ while we had the earthquakes ,a lot of broken gnarly roads that even my 29 counldnt handle
I hope Ill be seeing new mullet bikes with an emphasis on 26" wheels.
But if they build 26" with longer reach, steeper seat and topangle... why not?
I was just thinking - Canehdien. Right before you said bc haha 👌🏻👌🏻
Magic Mary is a great choice for the average mud!
You rides so fast! Very nice, im from Switzerland and my dream is that im going to Whistler;)
I still love my 2012 Specialized Demo 8 with 26" wheels. Can just throw her anywhere I want.
27,5 front 26 rear when ?
I am interested in trying that out!
Nice trails. Crazy switch back turns though
I can tell you right now which wheel size I think is better...
If you spray the rear rim the same way it will look sooooo gooood
I hate low BB designs and most bikes seem to be that way nowadays... I like the 26" wheel idea!
About 20 years ago, when you were a little boy, they even put on 24" wheels to get more grip. Good old times.
Spoiler alert - It's not the wheels he's loving in the fast tight turns, its the lower COG. That feel can be made with other adjustments on 27.5
Nathan just out of interest, how?
Yeah, enlighten us
@@JonoParker_ offset shock mounting hardware, sliding the stanchions up the crowns a smidge, heasdset adjustment etc
