I wouldn't call myself a songwriter per say, But when my dad makes me feel like shit and makes me feel worthless, I get all these little lyrics/verses in my head and I usually write them down and sometimes I try to rearrange them into a "song". My ideas are depressing and what not. That's the only time why I get song ideas and stuff, nothing else makes me think of lyrics. I have quite a few song names and stuff.
used to be this way but isolation helped me think and I'd think about how I was feeling at that time "example"

and so on I eventually got better at completing songs I'd right hopefully This helps you
p.s. I listen to allot of rock and I've been looking for other styles to go off of like jazz. country. electric. trash. something but I haven't gotten it yet

Having a little notepad and pen or pencil or a digital recording device so any little songwriting or poetic thoughts that pop into your head can be captured right away is so helpful. Don't think about how "good" it is because for one you might loose the poetic or melodic thought and for two you might like it better or get different ideas later. Poetry in a different form is what music is.

This is super helpful! Thanks for posting this. I'm in the middle of writing 100 songs in 100 days on my channel and have a few tips of my own if anyone's interested. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts / advice / etc.
1. Don't give up on songs too early! In forcing myself to finish a song a day, I've had many songs that I would've trashed halfway through if I didn't set this deadline, and have been pleasantly surprised with all of them. Any finished song is infinitely better than a half finished song that was never finished.
2. Set some constraints! The hardest essays have no prompts. Force yourself to include a certain word or phrase in your lyrics, common or uncommon. Force yourself to write a chorus with only 3 words. Force yourself to use a concept you heard in another song, or to finish a song in a day. Constraints require you to come up with ideas you would have never thought of otherwise and facilitate creativity.
3. And some random "writer's block" tips: try moving things around (switch lines in the chorus, make the first verse the second verse); exercise and eat a small snack (5-10 minute walk and peanuts will do) and come right back to it; ask songwriter friends for advice and opinions, and ALWAYS return the favor!

This is the first time I've ever commented on a UA-cam video, but I cannot help myself.
You summarised everything a beginner might need to know, without skipping or over-explaining any of the concepts. I love the fact that you are clearly chasing your dream with your own albums, but also giving back to those who are starting where you did. I will definitely watch more of your vlogs and may even check out your one-on-one sessions!

Okay... so my dream is to be a professional musician. I write lyrics and have the melodies for them in my head, but I can't play any instruments or read or write music. Where can I go to learn to read and write? A music theory class? And what instruments must I be able to play if I want to do that? Also, is there anything else I need to be able to do in order to get a shot at my dream?

Christy Avery My guitar teacher showed me how to read music so I could play guitar. Whatever instrument you are most interested in i suggest you get a teacher of that instrument show you

Christy Avery Hey Christy, a music theory class would be a great start. What instrument are you most interested in taking up? Learn something that you'll know you'll enjoy. There's also endless resources online for learning to read and write music. But seeking out a tutor will be really beneficial for you :)
You already have your lyrics and melodies and the fact that you're willing to learn more about music theory shows your dedication towards becoming a professional musician. Be persistent and you'll get there!
Learning Guitar and Piano, in my opinion, is crucial because those instruments are most used when attempting to develop music; however, dont be afraid to learn something different if you want to. My dream is to learn how to play the cello. But there are a variety of things that you can learn how to do.
I have the opposite problem I can play but it's so frustrating coming up with songs😫 lol
I remember watching a documentary about creativity and it actually agreed with your third to last tip I think lol that doing things that you normally do but in a different way will make you a more creative person. Thanks for the vid!

Why would there be two verses in a row? It's just one verse.
Brandon Newhouse Songs can have two verses in a row. However, if the song has a chorus that is distinct from the verses (as opposed to a refrain which is actually built into the verses) people often refer to the two verses at the beginning of a song as only one verse.

Don't focus too much on rhyming. Make your song meaningful. That should be your only focus. And go outside the box and don't use predictable or simple words.

Hey, this video popped up in my recommended and I thought I would give it a watch. I watched it and it made me want to write as soon as I finished. That's always an option I suppose. But pirated versions of Pro Tools, Cubase, FL Studio etc. do have their downsides for sure. I wouldn't expect any pirated copy to run to it's full potential.

this young lady must have been reading my mind a lot of the things that she mentioned here in his video I already already do. As songwriters we never know when we will come up with a idea. I loved when she said when you do make sure you write it down, recorded on something, because if you don't you will most likely forget it and the idea will never come back. I am a living witness to that. I am fortunate to have the equipment that I need to record my songs. I have never collaborated with anyone when writing an original song, but I don't think it's a bad idea. two minds sometime are better than one. This was a very good video my friend very good. Thank you Emma for this video!! I think my writer's block really comes from pure distraction. In order to write, I shouldn't necessarily *need* a little haven away from everything and everyone, but sometimes you do need to drag yourself away from your usual daily distractions that make procrastination a habit. I often need to kick my own butt, stop talking and just do. Since links and information for other music were invited, I've got plenty on my channel if you'd like to have a listen. Again, thanks!
+AdrienneFrailey Hey Adrienne! Yeah it's so easy to procrastinate and give in to distractions, everyone does it, including me sometimes! Another way people may wanna tackle it could be to set a routine and schedule in times every day or week to fit in their writing. If you're strict enough with yourself to set a regimented routine then go for it! But different things work for different people :) Thanks for sharing, I'll be sure to check out your channel. :)

Thanks for the tips. For me water is a huge help for writers block. I always seem to write songs while doing the dishes or running water in the tub, and ofcourse in the shower. And getting to hang out by a babbling brook seems to be helpful too.
