I make and restore leather products in my spare time, mostly bags, backpacks and small items like wallets and card-holders. I am still learning a ton every time I take on a new project and always appreciate feedback on my creations.
For the moment I don't take orders as I like to spend too many hours getting the finished product as good as I can : this means that if I were to sell these bags, the selling price would be way more than the bags are worth due to the hours of work involved.
As always, do let me know what you think of this video. If you have any tips or comments please let me know by dropping a comment below this video :) -
Hi, cool video! Your sneakers look really good. Just a tip.. When using the rotary punch, use a thick piece of leather under the leather you're making the holes in. This way, the punch can go all the way through your leather without hitting the anvil. This will make sure you get your holes without having to twist and wiggle the thing around, and at the same time you'll prevent it from getting dull ;).
Why did noone teach me that in elementary!
I literally bought a sneakerkit like 2 weeks ago, your video couldn't have come at a better time! Always enjoy your videos my friend!
Hahah perfect, have fun crafting :D
I got obsessed with quality shoes before trying leatherwork and now I have a deeper appreciation for cordswainers. The level of skill, planning and conceptual thinking the high level artisans operate at is incredible. On top of that they must make a profitable business.
Another great video, thanks for the time you put into bringing great content to your viewers
Those look great! I used a faux ostrich print leather in purple and orange for mine and receive a lot of compliments on them. And they are surpisingly comfortable, by far my favourite shoes!
Those sound like some wonderful shoes :D Love the idea of using an ostrich print leather!
Well done, James. Beautiful work.
Thank you :)
That was pretty cool. I'd want a slab of leather underneath the insert as an insole, and some kind of soft liner leather (especially around the ankles). However, in general, I like the concept.
Enjoyed watching. Thank you!
Glad you liked it :)
interesting. and so simple. probably will work great with denim.
Your sneakers look absolutely amazing, the leather and that color are 💥💥
Thank you so much :D
Stumbled upon this video never in my life have I even had the thought of making my own shoe/sneaker. After seeing this video I 100% want to have a crack at a pair 🙏
OMG thanks for sharing this, I am SO gonna buy these and try and make my own!
Glad this could inspire you to try it :)
Haven’t watched it yet, but I saved it to watch later but I just wanted to say that I can’t wait to sit down and enjoy it. You always bring good content to the table
Thank you so much Andrew for your kind message! So glad you like these videos :)
Thanks for the build inspiration. I have 2 kits already, but not yet the nerve to try and make anything!
Hahah, glad I could help :) Don't wait too long, the hardest part about this build is starting ;)
Great idea, thanks
Glad you like it :)
It looks great without cobler work
Glueing the soles could be a good addition to the the assembly.
Pretty cool, I’ve been eyeing the Chuck Taylor kit from District and this seems very similar.
Thanks, glad you like it :)
I am a shoemaker myself. Impressive work.
Thank you for your kind words :)
I don't see this as shoemaking as you're not building a sole or insole, lasting the shoe, building a heel block etc... Shoe making is so much more complex than this.
Anyway, I appreciate your comment!
When I was younger did not have much money were I was and a used to get shoes top and bottom from different brands and put them together for my own use they came out great all by hand and glue thank to that hard time and survived skills today here is this great country I rebuilt the interior on gator skin imitación vinyl my 84 diesel GMC suburban great work man
Oh wow, love this :D It's always wonderful to hear what people can achieve when they put their heads to it, especially if it allows to be creative!
i love the outcome of the shoe its so nice, i cant imagine that any one can make shoe that great, where do you get or did you download the shoe patern? i like to try it.
Can you please post a video of how the shoes hold up? I’m very curious.
Great video, thank you. Is it possible to estimate, if you cut the templates as efficiently as possible, how much leather you would actually need?
Those came out awesome. I want to try this so bad its some pull up oil tan with veg-tan or chrome-tan accents.
So glad you like them :)
My next pair will be black soles with black ghost leather with white wax - letting the patina take over!!!
Was thinking about trying this? Any thoughts on cheap leather to practice on? Been sewing bags and more heavy duty things never leather.
Hey James, do you know what the function of the stitches between the pieces near the lowest lace holes is? It looks like you left it out and I'm wondering about leaving it out too, but I'm worried you did something else clever to compensate!
I love to see you do this again but take uncolored leather and carve your channel Logo and color dye mach it make a 1 of 1 channel shoe
Hi. Can you please tell me what the correct length would be for the high top laces? No guidance on the sneakerkit website! thank you.
Too bad I am only seeing narrow toe'd shoes kits and none with a natural foot shape. You know the kind, with a wide toe box....I would love to make my own shoes.
What country manufacturers the soles provided in the kit? Thank you
I feel like you might want to glue the soles to the uppers
Hi James, Would it be possible to have your feedback on the following? I made almost the same sneakers as yours but in the lower version. Of course, they are not as beautiful as yours, but I'm happy with the result. My problem is the size. Usually I',m comfortable with a size 43 (EU) which I took. But the sneakers are really too small, even after trying to "extend" the leather a little bit. What is your experience with this? Could it be that it is caused by the thickness of the leather (I took the 2 mm from Raedermeckers as you)? What do you think? Thank you for your feedback. Alain.
This is super useful. I can get shoes that aren't made using child labor and sweatshops, which America uses for nearly all their shoes.
Absolutely! Glad to hear you liked the video :)
Hey James, nice video, how solid are the soles, i'm guessing that that wuld be the weak point in the shoe as the rest you could remake, would you think about glueing the leather to the soles for added strength? hope you are well.
Hey Darrin! The soles are very comfy but they're definitely not as sturdy as the hard leather soles I'm used to - at best on par with most sneakers.
I've actually gone ahead and added an thin outsole from Amazon to the bottom for a slightly harder grippy feel.
I considered gluing the leather but that would make it really hard to sew (if not near impossible) even if I were able to line up all the holes perfectly during the glue-up process. I may try that for the next pair I make however!
Thanks for your message, hope all is well for you also :)
Great! Is it really comfy when the interior leather is raw and not covered with some sort of fabric? Or do you prefer to only wear it withc socks ?
BTW; how is the sizing? Does it fit as your usual foot number or should us order 1 size bigger or smaller etc?
Leather is fine on the bare skin (like on Birkenstock sandals) but isn’t breathe able so I’d suggest socks to keep your foot cooler.
Nice work! I have a sneakerkit that's been sitting around for almost a year because I've been too nervous to start it. I like how yours turned out. One thing I don't understand is the stitch line that continues around the ankle opening of the leather. Isn't that just one layer of leather or did I miss something?
Thanks for the kind words :)
Yes I think they propose a stitch there which is purely decorative. That's why I chose to add a structural piece instead.
How to get pattern this shoes?
No footbed?
Merci. Alain
What is the weight of the leather?
And the images using the sneakers?
Wooo, it is so beautiful, how cost of pattens?
Glad you like it :)
The pattern is free on SneakerKit's website.
Wow they look amazing! But how much did the cost? I looked up the leather f that was £300! I’m not sure how many you could get from that size leather but doesn’t look many, still hand made shoes wow.
True, the leather costs a fair bit but I only used a small portion.
I estimate the total cost of the shoes at around 80 to 100$ in the end, not counting the time that went into making them. So if you have the leather and the time, it's a great project and knowing that I'm the one who made them makes them so much more special :)
Are they comfortable without a lining?
They are actually not bad at all though a lining would definitely help!
This is a huge leap from self checkout at the grocery store
Hahah it is indeed x)
Thanks, glad you like it :)
Yes, SneakerKit have PDF templates available on their website.
I’ve been putting this off for a while 😅
Hahahah, get to it then :D
Bravo !👏🏻
#patinaislife
Anyway, those will not need to be cut in half by @roseanvil 😁
Hahah merci :D
😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
You forgot to use glue
Ma-gni-fi-que
Merci :D
seems weird not to have a leather insole
Working with dry leather is the biggest beginner mistake. A spray bottle of water would have saved tons of work and pain.
Red or green thread for the sole stitching would’ve been supreme
Not sure about red but I could have gone for green :D
It's DIY not dyi...
How did I miss this... *facepalm*
Thanks for the head's up Jonny!
@@JamesBerry super easy mistake to make and easy fix 😀
I think if you cemented them as well it would be good.
There is no vegtan leather! Even artificial leather has a real leather piece
Are you talking about "vegetable tanned" leather (referring to tanning animal skins using natural vegetable tannins) or vegan leather (referring to fake leather that does not include animal skin)?
i wanna make me some Pueblo shoes now...
Hahah I was thinking these could be cool in some waxed ghost leather to really show off the patina :D
